This is absolutely no hate genuinely write whatever you want but Mean Dom Hua Cheng is so funny to me like Xie Lian literally burned his house down and Hua Cheng showed up with his crying sword and neck bared because he gave Xie Lian an ouchie that bitch is not doing punishment play.

tgcf book spoilers, but one mu qing and xie lian snippet that I think about a lot is this one, at the start of xie lian’s second banishment when he’s surprised to hear mu qing being described as generous and kind:
Tumblr media
as opposed to this memory from before his first ascension when mu qing started giving out cherries to the kids in the city:
Tumblr media
I think it just really goes to show 1) how deeply mq’s actions truly affected xl and what he thought of him, but also 2) just how different mq and xl are fundamentally in the way that they think and approach things.
I don’t have a lot of commentary on xl that hasn’t already been said, but bc we get the story from xl’s pov, we see a lot of mq’s actions being framed as selfish or suspicious (which is fair, bc again, we know how much his actions hurt xl), but we also see a lot of misconstrued kindness, like in book 8 where it’s revealed that he knocked out fx in order to save him. it’s also pretty obvious how much mq still cares abt xl, with how quickly he volunteers as fu yao and the lengths he goes to protect him when he deems hc a threat, so I also think it’s very likely that mq leaving the trio first was exactly what he said it was — that he thought becoming a junior official, ascending quickly, would be the best way to take care of not just his mother, but also xl, fx, the king and queen, and himself, and so in a way, him leaving was him acting on his kindness. but ofc it doesn’t work out, and he spends the next 800 years fighting w/ fx about it, defending himself, his decisions, and his kindness, and nitpicking the accuracies of his statues while he himself remains completely misunderstood by the two people he probably cares abt the most.
and idk, I guess I just think that’s probably a really lonely way to spend 800 years.

Rereading the start of Book 2 is fucking fascinating because 1. how Mu Qing is treated by everyone but Xie Lian boils my blood, but also 2. I cannot believe there are people who think Xie Lian is naive and ignorant of the world after reading what he says and thinks during those first few chapters alone. He is so persistently considerate and sensitive to power imbalances and the abuse of power even before he """stops being naive""".

Accidentally switched to dub while Qi Rong was yapping about Hua Cheng and this lil greasy weasel fully went:
"EVERY TIME I SAY SOMETHING NASTY ABOUT YOU HE GETS ALL FIRED UP AND KICKS MY ASS, DID YOU BLIND HIM WITH YOUR HOLY LIGHT OR WAS IT SOME OTHER HOLY PART OF YOU???"
Bro???????????? Uncalled for???????

Who would ask the "Would you love me if I was a worm?" question (Mxtx partners version)
WangXian - Wei Wuxian - He's not insecure, he's just being annoying on purpose.
HuaLian - Hua Cheng - He is very insecure. 💀 The fact that he brought up the question at all is a huge step. Xie Lian will of course say yes and shower him with kisses.
BingQiu - Luo Binghe - He is both annoying and insecure. 💀
The Responses
Lan Wangji: That would never happen
Wei Wuxian: But if I was?
Lan Wangji: But you aren't.
Wei Wuxian: Yet if I was?
Lan Wangji: But you're not.
Wei Wuxian: If I WAAAAAASSSSSSS????
Lan Wangji: .........
Lan Wangji, blushing: Yes
.
Xie Lian: (Immediate doting on Hua Cheng and explains how he'll carry him around in his pockets and add some mud so he wouldn't dry out)
.
Shen Qingqiu, in disbelief: How on earth am I supposed to love a worm?!
Luo Binghe, tearing up: Shizun doesn't love me.
Shen Qingqiu, panicking: W-wait!
Inner SQQ: If he starts crying now he's not going to stop!
Shen Qingqiu, accepts defeat with a shaky smile: I will. I'll love you, even if you were a worm so don't cry okay?
Inner SQQ: Even if it's impractical. Isn't that animal abuse?
Luo Binghe: Yaaaay!

Hualian being freak for freak is so real cause I feel like if we ever got the books from Hua Chengs POV half the novel would just be Hua Cheng coming up with loony toons level of schemes and contingency’s to seduce Xie Lian and Xie Lian just makes all of them flop by responding to them nothing like a normal person. This is literally how they interact all of book 1:

Feng Xin and Xie Lian remember their childhood with warmth, as a time when they didn't have so many worries.
Mu Qing prefers not to think about his yearly years at all.
The same events evoke completely different emotions in them. Feng Xin and Xie Lian talking about the luxurious feasts in the royal palace feel nostalgic and Mu Qing thinks about the greasy looks that some noble guests would throw at the pretty servant, sleepless nights spent washing the magnificent clothes on which the prince accidentally spilled a drink or dripped sauce and how after barely resting he will prepare the morning outfit for the prince as a day of grueling training awaits them. He remembers the cold tone of the guoshi, tryings to slip away from a group of bullies and work work again.
He recalls waiting for the week to end so he can return to his poor little house and feel the warmth he's been dreaming of as he hugs his mum tight.

listen i'm not saying this in any way affects who you think tops and bottoms in HuaLian (switch truth activated) but i AM saying if you don't write Xie Lian as a gentle but incredibly protective alpha and Hua Cheng as a bitchy territorial omega you're MISSING OUT

Listen, I know Jun Wu has done horrible, unforgivable things as a result of his bitterness and his anger and his grief and his resentment, and nothing can make up for the suffering and the anguish that he caused so many people, especially our sweet Xie Lian. I know that.
But... I still can't help but wish that someone, anyone, just one single person, had listened to his story and told him,
Hey. I'm really sorry that happened to you. That was a horrible thing to have to go through; no one could have deserved that. You tried your very hardest. You tried everything that you could think of to do. I'm sorry that not a single person appreciated your efforts. I'm sorry that they only used you. I'm sorry that they scorned and ridiculed and renounced you. I'm sorry that everyone left you all alone in the end. The fact that you tried should have counted for something. The fact that you even thought to try should have meant something.
I just think, maybe if someone had told him those words at any point in time, then things might have been different. Maybe he could have changed. Maybe his heart wouldn't have frozen over. Maybe he could have turned himself around.
For as much as he wanted to corrupt Xie Lian and make him his 'successor', I think maybe deep down, a part of him actually just wanted to be vindicated. To have his suffering be understood. And while Xie Lian did not owe him a single ounce of sympathy, if he had shown him even a little bit and said the above, I'm willing to bet the great White Clothed Calamity would have broken down crying.
Xie Lian himself was saved by a single act of compassion, after all.
There's just not enough empathy in stories.
