in no-magic modern verses, anden is an intensivist and works exclusively in the intensive care unit and emergency department. he had no interest in pursuing surgery despite being more than qualified for that track and being told by instructors that he'd make an excellent surgeon (if he'd chosen this, he would be in trauma surgery), but he finds that his skills are better used in the treatment and management of patients in critical care. in these verses, he also worked as a paramedic during the years which he was completing his undergrad in order to save up for medical school despite the kaul's determination to pay the tuition for it anyway.

Emery-I’m not a goddamn surgeon- Anden being the one Lott (just a fist at the time) goes to so he can stitch his injuries. Lott, using the time Anden is  channeling to stop the bleeding and then cleaning the cut, to actually look at Anden’s face and see how he is doing, if life decisions have treated him well.

Emery -I’m not a doctor anymore- Anden still being the one to stitch Lott’s very occasional injuries, the years have passed but Lott still asks “are you happy with what you’ve chosen?” and Anden, whom has lost two of his cousins, whose Pillar looks at him for reassurance, whose boyfriend seems very far away even though they’re on the same room, saying that things have been fine.

Lott-not a Horn anymore- Jin asking Anden to join him at his house for a drink after his retirement party ends. Anden following him mostly because of  curiosity (and also a little bit of concern for Nico in case it is about him). Lott looking at Anden in the eyes and telling him “you’re not a mistake”.

Lott and Anden after decades of learning, knowing and re-learning the other, sitting together on the patio. Anden tracing with his fingers the scar on Lott’s forearm, feeling the difference between  the skin and the scar tissue. He doesn’t need to look at Lott in the eyes to hear the question, when he says “ yes, I am”
