OKAY BUT I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS NOW
Alfred and Charlotte (Bermuda's human name, idk why I picked it I just like it; her name is Charlotte-Anne bc yes William was one of those ppl to give his kid two first names) being twins has already stuck in my brain holy- I think it's here to stay.
I'm just very much enjoying this idea of Mr. 3.797 million Miles(2) and Ms. 20.54 Miles(2) being twins. I'm also enjoying it being common knowledge 10/10 everyone knows they're twins, yes everyone thinks it's weird, William is not answering questions at this moment. They were born in 1608.

17th August 1871 saw the death in London of the Scottish landscape painter Patrick Naysmith.
Patrick was the eldest son of the more well known Alexander Naysmith, known as ‘the father of landscape painting in Scotland’. Patrick was named after his father’s friend Patrick Miller of Dalswinton. He was taught the rudiments of drawing and painting by his father before moving to London in 1807. He suffered from poor health and an accident to his right hand when he was young meant that he had to learn to draw left-handed.
He studied under his father, and travelled to London in 1807. Nasmyth was a landscape painter and although his subject matter was usually found in the countryside around London, his style was modelled on the Dutch seventeenth century artists, especially Meindert Hobbema, he was wrongly given the nickname “the English Hobbema, having said that from what I can gather he spent most of his life down south.
His landscapes are described as “pleasing and conventional” and achieved considerable success in their day, I’m not an expert, but enjoy some art, to me his work seemed boring and all the sameish, unlike others Scottish artist like Allan Ramsay Jnr, David Roberts or, in my opinion, the best of them all Henry Raeburn.
Naysmith exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the British Institute and was one of the founder members of the Royal Society of British Artists. Many of his brothers and sisters were also painters, which led to much confusion about the family and their work he was one of eleven children, of whom Patrick was the eldest. Of the other ten Jane (b.1788), Anne (b.1798) and Charlotte (b.1804) were all landscape painters.
His studio sale was held at Christie’s 18th June 1831. Titles exhibited at the Royal Academy include “View of Windsor Castle”, “A View in the New Forest” and “A Windmill on the River Don, Yorkshire”. His works can be found in museums in: Cape Town; Edinburgh; Glasgow; Hamburg; Liverpool; London, National Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum; Montreal; New York and Sheffield.
Pics are of the artist, Valley of the Tweed and Edinburgh from Craigleith
You can find a more detailed bio and more pics on him here http://www.thefamousartists.com/patrick-nasmyth

while i procrastinate on getting a more fleshed out bio up for anne, here's some sparknotes :)
she was born into a upper class family in a medium-sized village in england
when she was sixteen, in an act of self defense, she sliced the face of the richest and most handsome bachelor and left him physically scarred
*he was vain and psychotic and wanted her k*lled for it
because of this, anne was exiled out of the country and told never to return unless she wanted to ruin her entire family or even face execution
she was shipped away that same night, forced to change her name from annelise shawcross to anne wynter
upon her departure, she was cut off from all communication from her family, though her and her sister charlotte secretly kept in touch the entire time via letters and using aliases
she worked as a companion to an old woman on the isle of man for 3 years
after the lady passed away, anne migrated back to england to work as a governess for a relative of her former employer
she worked as a governess for three other families before arriving in london to work for the pleinsworth family
currently she works as a governess for the pleinsworths, a well-off family in mayfair, ensuring the education of three girls
the family is closely related to the smythe-smith family, which is in the same echelon as the bridgerton family
a cousin of the girls she teaches, the current earl of winstead, takes a liking to her
he has also just returned from an exile of his own for accidentally shooting his friend in a duel
she ignores his affections as much as she can so she isn't fired and exiled all over again, but she's down bad :(
*there's a lot to unpack with her relationship with george, and there are quite a few tw involved with it, so i'll leave it out for now since specifics aren't crucial to interacting with her.
i'll probably make separate posts about her npc relations but otherwise i'll only allude to it in threads :)

Name: Charlotte Anne Delyle Nickname(s): Charlie, Charles, Lottie, Baby Gender: Female (she/her) Age: Twenty Three Birthday: September 21st Sexuality: Straight (unless?) Occupation: Administration Assistant, Gravewood High. Face: Willa Fitzgerald Style: TBA - Preppy? Hair: Usually light brown - occasionally blonde. Usually medium-length. Eyes: Hazel Mother: Katrina Delyle Father: Unknown Bio: Charlotte was a golden child growing up - the only daughter to a single mother who had a champagne taste on a beer budget. Hailing from the so called bad side of town, everyone always suspected that the illustrious lady of the night, Katrina Delyle would never amount to anything. Of course, that was before they all realised that somehow, someway Katrina had produced a beautiful baby, with a heart shaped face and a beautiful complexion. Charlotte never knew her father, nor did most of the town people. They had suspicions, of course this is a small town in middle America. But nobody dared say a thing. Of course, from the time she was a baby Charlotte was entered into every pageant that would take her - America’s prettiest babies, Toddlers and Tiara’s. Katrina had big ambitious for her precocious cherub, and a new pretty young face to live vicariously through. Life proceeded as it could, though the money never seemed to stay for long. Charlotte was adored in school, ever much the antithesis to the grating personality of her mother (but was it practised? none could say.). Eventually, a large win of Miss Teen Gravewood, when Charlotte was fifteen was enough to bring their family out of poverty, and over to the right side of town. Life moved up for Charlotte here, having her first boyfriend, a wonderful life and enjoying what every teen girl could want. But was it enough? As she moved beyond the high school walls, eighteen years of lacking a father seemed to catch up with poor Charlotte. Soon, her sweet but naive boyfriend couldn’t quite scratch that… itch she’d been harbouring. He was nice, and proper but… he wasn’t what she wanted. Thus led Charlotte down a dark path, into seedy bars and back alleys with men who were far too old to be seen with such a fresh-faced eighteen year old. Deep down Charlotte knew why they wanted her, but god did they make her feel wanted.. safe. This of course, continued when Charlotte went to College, falling madly for her much older professor. How was she supposed to know he was married? He’d promised he would leave his wife for her, to make her, his. Pity it was against the school charter to have that sort of relationship, and as payback the man’s wife threw the now twenty one year old Charlotte to the wolves, and she returned back to Gravewood, degree-less, but no less messed up than ever. Settling down now, she accepted a job at Gravewood High, as an administration assistant. It pays well enough, and lets just say that there are far too many eligible, older bachelors in Gravewood. Charlotte now feels she’s exactly where she’s meant to be.

Jane Eyre supplementary materials: bio
I recently bought a hardback version of Jane Eyre, with illustrations by Marjolein Bastin. It looked really pretty, so I decided to add it to the collection. But when I got it and opened it up, there are a series of supplemental materials that come tucked in the pages.
The first one is this bio/fact sheet on the life of Charlotte Brontë. I'll include the picture I took of it, but then I also copied the text down so it's readable. I'm interested enough at this point to want to look into her life more, and even put the biography of her by Elizabeth Gaskell (mentioned below) on my list. I had read bits of Charlotte Bronte's bio before but hadn't really put together how much of Jane Eyre was drawn from her own personal experiences. Having come to really appreciate the novel, I want to know more about the writer.
Tumblr media
Charlotte Brontë  Born: April 21, 1816  Died: March 31, 1855  Profession: Author (Pseudonym: Currer Bell)  Parents: Patrick Brontë (Pastor), Maria Branwell  Siblings: Maria, Elisabeth, Patrick, Emily, Jane, and Anne  Education: Cowan Bridge (Convent School in Lancashire) and Roe Head (Mirfield)  Works: Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Vilette (1853), The Professor (1857, posthumously), Emma (1860, posthumously, incomplete)
Biography:  Charlotte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, as the third-oldest child of the Brontë family. Soon after the family moved to Haworth, her mother died of cancer. At that time, Charlotte was just five years old. In 1824, Charlotte and her siblings were sent to the Cowan Bridge School, which was a boarding school for the daughters of middle-class clergymen. Tuberculosis broke out a year later, and her sisters Maria and Elisabeth both fell ill and died of consumption in 1825. The extreme conditions at the Cowan Bridge School served as Charlotte's template for the Lowood Boarding School so vividly portrayed in Jane Eyre.
When Anne, Emily, and Charlotte were taken home to Haworth after the sister's passing, their mother's sister, Elizabeth Branwell, cared for the children. It was during this bleak period at the parsonage that the sisters began to invent stories together.
In 1831, Charlotte was the only one among the children to be sent to the Roe Head School in Mirfield, where she met Ellen Nussey. For years thereafter, Charlotte kept up the contact with Ellen and regularly sent her letters. She also got along particularly well with one of the teachers, Miss Wooler, which led to a close friendship. It's easy to see parallels between the Ellen and Miss Wooler of Charlotte's life and Helen Burns and Miss Temple from Jane Eyre. Charlotte finished the school with the distinction of "best student" and returned as a teacher to Roe Head just a few years later.
After working as a governess from 1839 to 1841, she decided to fund her own school in Haworth. To implement this idea, which eventually failed due to low enrollment, she travelled to Brussels with Emily in order to improve her French. At the Pensionnat des Demoiselles boarding school, Charlotte fell unhappily in love with the married principal Constantin Héger. She returned to Haworth in 1844, and two years later she published her first work: a poetry volume that she authored along with her sisters. Her first success, however, came when she published Jane Eyre under the male pseudonym "Currer Bell". When Charlotte revealed her true identity, she experienced a short period of fame and made regular appearances in London's literary circles. She published additional novels, but they never achieved the same degree of recognition as Jane Eyre.
In 1848, Charlotte, Anne and Emily were living together and enjoying a carefree existence thanks to their collective success. Then their brother Patrick died in September as a result of years-long alcohol-dependence. Shortly after that tragedy, Emily died from tuberculosis, and Anne succumbed to the same disease in 1849. Not much later, Charlotte met Elizabeth Gaskell, who would eventually become a close friend and even publish The Life of Charlotte Brontë.
At the age of thirty-eight, Charlotte married her father's auxiliary pastor, Arthur Bell Nicholls. Shortly thereafter she became pregnant, but she began to experience severe morning sickness, otherwise known as hyperemesis gravidarum. On March 31, 1855, Charlotte Brontë died as a result of dehydration, malnutrition, and grave pneumonia.

bio.
born in the states, baton rouge, louisiana, daisy was in a loving family and first of four girls. charlotte and jack hookum couldn’t have been happier with their clan. daisy was a gem from the first day and always had a mothering instinct. she would play with her dolls and stuffed animals with care until her first sister, abigail, was born. she finally had a human being to focus her love and attention on. she helped her parents and they loved seeing the connection the two had from the first day. then came along the next two siblings, natalie and leah. daisy was thrilled. she kept expecting more children would come but that would be the end of siblings. charlotte and jack certainly had their hands full but could always count on daisy. the house was a busy one but a loving busy house. none of the daughters ever felt like they were taken for granted. daisy herself made sure she gave as much care to each of them as she could and charlotte and jack would never find themselves ignoring any of their children who always came first.
while being such an integral part of the family, daisy showed signs of magic. she was able to make plants grow without trying. the house had a beautiful garden outside that she had created. it was the thing she had for herself. her bedroom was blooming. she didn’t know how she could do it but it brought her joy. when she was eight years old her parents sat her down and explained that charlotte was a witch and that meant that daisy had the chance to have those abilities and it appeared she did. daisy was taken aback but excited by the word magic. when she was told she would be going to a special school to hone her skills, daisy became uneasy about leaving her family. charlotte promised her that she had some of her best days at ilvermorny and not to worry because she had a few years to get used to the idea.
having grown up in louisiana, it came as a big surprise when her parents told the family that they were moving to england due to a job her mother got. they didn’t tell them that it was at the ministry of magic but that it was a huge opportunity that they couldn’t pass up. ten year old daisy’s mind was spinning. she was ten years old and expecting to go to ilvernorny, something she was preparing for. now she was going to be expected to go somewhere else that was brand new. her mother couldn’t promise hogwarts would be the best days of her life. shortly after the move, daisy received her letter. she was nervous but refused to let it get the best of her. she was tough and could handle it. she would be the first of her family to enter such an adventure. she could always write letters to her family and see them at breaks. she had photos that she planned on posting around her room.
when daisy got to hogwarts, she was blown away by the view of the castle from the boats. again, her head was spinning. she couldn’t believe how beautiful it was and hoped that her experience would be just as lovely as that experience. and when she walked into the great hall the experience was only enhanced. butterflies lived in her stomach when she saw that people had to put a hat on to say where you belonged in the school. it told her hufflepuff. a long table of students stood and clapped as she walked to them, not knowing what it meant but felt welcomed as she held her head up high. daisy was proud. she had to be and refused to be anything less.
daisy did well in her classes. she got good marks, nothing outstanding, but grades that got her through and that she was proud enough of. however, the classes she excelled in were history of magic and muggle studies. it was these classes that shaped who she would become as an adult. the war only cemented what she thought about doing later in life.
during the war, daisy spent a lot of time with her family. she stayed neutral but was scared for her family seeing as how she herself was a half-blood and had family that were muggles. she would try her best to fight for her family. if something happened to them, something would happen to her. she wouldn’t let them go down without her. luckily it never came to that. they were safe and daisy was relieved.
after the war, daisy returned to her flat and returned to her job at the secondhand bookstore where she felt at home. she began writing notes about ideas of what she wanted to do with her life. the idea she had before the war was finally going to happen. she was going to prepare herself to live a full year without any magic. she wanted to live as a muggle and write about her experience. she hoped that in doing so the magical world would see that being a muggle has its own magic and to not fear what muggles have to offer the world. daisy hasn’t started her year as of yet but is preparing.

Kelly Mcgillis's Net Worth: From Top Gun to Present
Tumblr media
With her girl-next-door looks and undeniable acting talent, Kelly McGillis captured the hearts of moviegoers in the 1980s thanks to memorable roles in films like Witness, Top Gun, and The Accused. Though she stepped back from the spotlight in the 1990s, she has recently reemerged on the independent film scene, proving her versatility in horror movies and Amish-themed TV films. Now over 60 years into her impressive career, McGillis’s staying power demonstrates her broad artistic range and willingness to take on risky, complex characters. This is the story of a gifted performer who broke through playing an Amish mother, became the '80s quintessential leading lady, and continues fearlessly reinventing herself to this day. Kelly McGillis’s Bio Year Born 1957 Birthplace Newport Beach, California Ethnicity Scots-Irish, German, Welsh Education Juilliard School Breakout Role Witness (1985) Most Famous Role Top Gun (1986) Years Active 1983-present Spouse(s) Boyd Black (div.), Fred Tillman (div.) Children 2 daughters with Tillman Early Life and Education Kelly Ann McGillis was born on July 9, 1957, in Newport Beach, California, to Virginia Joan (née Snell), a homemaker, and Donald Manson McGillis, a physician. She has two younger sisters. McGillis is of Scots-Irish paternal ancestry and German maternal ancestry. She attended Newport Harbor High School and later got a GED in 1975 after dropping out of high school. McGillis then moved to New York City to study acting at the prestigious Juilliard School, graduating in 1983. Film Career Highlights McGillis started her film career playing Geneva Spofford in 1983’s Reuben. Her breakthrough came two years later with her portrayal of Amish mother Rachel Lapp in the 1985 drama Witness opposite Harrison Ford. The role earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA award nominations for Best Supporting Actress. In 1986, she starred as flight instructor Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood in the blockbuster action film Top Gun with Tom Cruise. Other notable film projects have included 1987’s romantic drama Made in Heaven, 1988’s historical drama The House on Carroll Street, and 1988’s courtroom drama The Accused. Later Films and TV Roles After stepping away from Hollywood for a few years in the 1990s, McGillis returned to acting in a string of TV movies and independent films in the 2000s. These have included a recurring role in The L Word (2007-2008), as well as parts in the horror films Stake Land (2010), The Innkeepers (2011), and We Are What We Are (2013). Recently, she has starred in several Amish-themed TV movies like Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio (2014) and An Uncommon Grace (2017). The actress returned to acting in 2006 after a five-year break. After Top Gun, Kelly McGillis' resume is vast, perhaps shockingly. Many moviegoers remember her with Top Gun, although she's had success since the '80s hit. McGillis paused acting for five years after 2001's Morgan's Ferry. In 2007, she starred in the documentary Girl 27, but McGillis returned to acting in 2006, filming Supergator, a B-horror film released the following year. The movie Supergator appears to be a turn, but the monster movie changed McGillis's career. After the film, she appeared in many horror films, including Stake Land, The Innkeepers, and We Are What We Are, which were selected for the Sundance Film Festival. Although she took a break from cinema, she appeared in archival material for the 2021 documentary Val. She had minor roles in TV episodes like Showtime's The L Word and Syfy's Z Nation. In Top Gun: Maverick, Kelly McGillis didn't return—is she retired? Look no further for Kelly McGillis in Top Gun 2. McGillis appears in Top Gun: Maverick's archive footage but not the sequel. Director Joseph Kosinski said the Maverick team carefully included legacy characters in the sequel, aiming to introduce new characters. Although Top Gun: Maverick doesn't suffer without Charlie, McGillis says she "look age-appropriate for my age, and that is not what that whole scene is about." Kelly Mcgillis's Net Worth While her exact net worth is not publicly known, it is estimated that Kelly McGillis has amassed a respectable fortune of $2-5 million as of 2023. The majority of her wealth likely comes from her extensive acting resume spanning over 40 years in the entertainment industry. Her paydays for starring in hit 1980s films like Witness and Top Gun, both major box office successes, contributed significantly to her current net worth. Kelly McGillis Net Worth Growth Year Net Worth (Million) Kelly McGillis Net Worth in 2023 $10 Million Kelly McGillis Net Worth in 2022 $9 Million Kelly McGillis's Net Worth in 2021 $8 Million Kelly McGillis's Net Worth in 2020 $7 Million Kelly McGillis's Net Worth in 2019 $6 Million Kelly McGillis's Net Worth in 2018 $5 Million TV movie roles and guest appearances have also added to her bank account over the years. Though she has not matched the fame of her 1980s peak, McGillis has enjoyed a consistent acting career since with independent films and other projects. Careful financial management throughout her working life has allowed the 65-year-old actress to accumulate her estimated net worth of $2-5 million. Conclusion Kelly McGillis has shown incredible range and talent in a nearly 40-year career spanning film, TV, and theatre. While often remembered best for her iconic 1980s roles, she has continued taking on compelling, complex characters over the decades. Her victims’ rights drama The Accused and recent plunge into horror films DISPLAY her willingness to take risks and avoid typecasting herself. With diverse credits under her belt, McGillis has certainly cemented her place as one of the most versatile actresses of her generation. FAQs What was Kelly McGillis's breakout role? Her breakout role was as Amish mother Rachel Lapp in the 1985 drama Witness with Harrison Ford. How many times has she been nominated for a Golden Globe? She has been nominated for a Golden Globe once for her supporting role in Witness. Has Kelly McGillis been married? Yes, she has been married twice - first to Boyd Black from 1979-1981 and then to Fred Tillman from 1989-2002. She has two daughters with Tillman. What was her most famous film role? Also! What do you think of Cesare's relationship with Charlotte (and how it's fictionalized in the various TV shows/movies etc)? A lot of his biographers tend to think that Charlotte didn't like him/wasn't willing (I'm looking at Bradford especially), but I'm reading Miron's biography of Charlotte and it's interesting that they both do seem to admire and respect each other at least. Why do people default to thinking she was unwilling?
Anon, was this ask a cont. of the ask about Cesare’s mistresses? if not, let me know because it’s possible tumblr eat it. So, let’s talk about history first, because history affects fiction and/or fiction affects history, they do feed off each other a lot, I have noticed. When I first started reading about the Borgia family, and about Cesare in particular, I didn't had many thoughts about them tbh, it seemed to me their marriage was simply a political alliance, and that Charlotte was of no importance to Cesare, and her grief over him was bizarre. I think those are common thoughts to have, esp. if you start out by reading Bradford's bios, which was the case for me. But over the years, reading other sources and the historical documents regarding them, (and actually, there is a good amount of documentary evidence about them, I was surprised) my initial thoughts changed gradually because a different picture started to emerge. Once I found documents and new info, I begun to understand the faults and inconsistencies in what I had previously read and concluded about them, and with this mental update came a new assessment about their relationship, one which matched the evidence I encountered, and one that more accurately approximated the reality, as much as it is possible when it comes to the past and people’s private lives, anyways. My thoughts about them now, anon, it's that they actually had a loving relationship, if also bittersweet. It’s true their union was primarily a political alliance, as noble marriages tended to be, but it seems their case was also one of those cases where fortunately politics, duty and love matched. As in the case of King Louis and Anne of Brittany, or even Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso d’Aragona. When looking at the historical material, it’s hard to miss Cesare and Charlotte shared  feelings for each other, which seems to have never faded away, not even with time and the distance between them. Cesare plainly had a high opinion of his wife, and he shows himself to have been an affectionate, indulgent, responsible husband to her. Biographers tend to focus way too much on the distance aspect of their relationship, or make modern judgements of the fact Cesare seems to have a mistress by his side after he went back to Italy (as most noblemen did) to condemn him yet again, or to dismiss the importance of Charlotte in his life, and they miss or ignore the little details (and their significance) in the actions Cesare consistently made in regards to Charlotte and their child, Louise. He obviously cared about them, and he seems to have tried really hard to bring them to Italy, and to secure their well being. I find it harsh whenever I see biographers doubting the sincerity of his efforts to bring his wife and child to Italy. Claiming it was all an act from him, for reasons they never care to explain, or at least explain properly, it's speculation without any evidential basis to warrant it. There is a stubborn ill-will and cynicism with Cesare by biographers in general that I find quite interesting on a intellectual level, but also deeply unfair and dishonest. There is this trend of always assuming the worst from him, so even when they are confronted by evidence which shows his good actions and/or qualities, they are quick to suspect how genuine it is, and they have to add something negative, dark to it, or ulterior motives. In any case, Cesare failed at the first one, because ultimately it wasn't up to him to bring his wife and child to his side, it was up to King Louis, whom for political reasons seems to have found it valuable to kept Charlotte and Louise as political hostages in France, and that imo, only further suggests their importance to Cesare (you don't kept hostages of no value to the person you want something from), but it only takes one look at the long and impressive inventory of Charlotte d'Albret, how wealthy she became by marrying Cesare and remained so, even after his death, and the marriages Louise was able to make, to know he succeeded at the second. Their good situation is directly linked to Cesare's actions towards them when he was alive. To me, the bittersweet point of their relationship is that it seems the politics which brought them together was the same one who kept them apart, a common situation with noble marriages, too, and it looks it pained and frustrated both of them tbh. Charlotte never ceases to insist Cesare returns to her in France, and Cesare insists she joins him in Italy. Eventually, I think both realized their hands were tied, Charlotte couldn’t disobey or defy the King’s wishes, without his outspoken, written permission, she couldn’t leave France. And Cesare, even if he wanted to, couldn’t leave Italy, I don’t believe that’s something pope Alexander would have permitted (and he would have needed the permission from the both the Pope and the father, he was hardly free to do whatever he wanted as it is claimed by some authors), and his whole life, that of his family, were there. In the end, I think they understood they had to be patient and wait until the political scenario changed, until Cesare wasn’t so dependent on the French and King Louis. And it looked one of those times were when Cesare managed to scape his prison in Spain, and went to Navarre, Charlotte’s brother court. It’s possible both of them then might have thought they were close to finally reunite, and idk if you came across this, but around this time there is a letter from Cesare to King Louis where he tenderly refers to Charlotte as "sua carissima sposa/ his dearest wife", but unfortunately death entered the scene, and they never saw each other again. That’s something that makes me sad wherever I read about it, it’s sad how long they waited, how much they seemed to have desired to see each other and be together, how much they tried along the years, and it’s sad Cesare never met his daughter. And you know, about Charlotte herself, I really do think she was a more interesting, intelligent woman than Borgian biographers usually think or recognize her of being, she certainly impressed Cesare and I don’t think that was an easy thing to accomplish. It's a shame the little space she occupies in quite a few of Cesare's biographies, for example, but even so, the evidence on her side of things equally shows her as an affectionate, kind, and loyal wife to Cesare. She entered marriage with him happily, not only for what it brought her family, but also because she seemed quite smitten for him (as he was for her), they matched well, perhaps from the first moment they met, who knows, and one impressed the other, that's more certain. Charlotte is noted as a blissfully happy bride after the marriage, and we have her letter to Pope Alexander, where she says she’s very pleased with the Duke (Cesare). Moreover her actions during Cesare's downfall, and after his death, corroborates even more that she loved her husband. It is recorded she entered a profound state of grief, (and taking into account all the evidence which shows Cesare was a good husband to her, her grief does not look bizarre then, it makes perfect sense I would say) she never remarried although she was young, and she could have, and she pretty much retired from public/courtly life. She devoted herself to the upbringing of their child, Louise, and she died only a few years after Cesare, strangely in the same month of March, and only one day before he did. So, why biographers, especially Bradford, tend to think Charlotte didn't like Cesare, and/or they default to thinking she was an unwilling bride? *sighs in spanish* I think it has a lot to do with what I'm always talking about in this blog, with the fact Cesare's historical literature has quite a bit of faults and vices, and those are very particular. It's not the same faults and vices of Rodrigo or Lucrezia's historical literature, for example. And when discussing this theme, of his relationship with Charlotte d'Albret, some of these faults and vices do get in the way of a honest, fact-based assessment and presentation of things. Cesare usually receives a narrow, simplistic, oftentimes misleading presentation by many of his biographers. The main issue is that they tend to see him through the lens of Machiavelli's writings, or even worst, from other Florentine or Venetian writings, and that causes incorrect assumptions about him, as a person, as a man, but more to the subject at hand here, as a husband. The conventional picture of him is of a insensitive, unscrupulous, utterly selfish, cruel, and power-hungry man. He wasn't the devil they say, but he was a pretty bad individual, it’s their conclusion. it doesn't matter how hard it is to find evidence to support this view or all the contradictions to it, especially in connection to Charlotte, he is seen and presented this way, like a Machiavellian prince in other words. And when it comes to his personal life, his romantic life, this view is applied to it as well, and it is a fertile ground for unsupported claims and assumptions. It's super easy to make conclusions which are not necessarily, or at all, true. Adding to that, there is also the reccurent issue, perhaps obsession of scholars, of constantly overemphasizing Cesare's relations with his sister, Lucrezia, with exaggerate, romantic narratives of Lucrezia being his only exception, the only woman he ever had an emotional bond with, and/or respected, which it’s demonstrably false, as I later found out. That's where Bradford enters, interesting you singled her out among Cesare's biographers, because yes, she is particularly dismissive of Charlotte and Cesare's relationship with her. I think in her case, it's due to her feelings for the Cesare/Lucrezia relationship. She carries such a huge flag for them, (it's uncomfortable to read it if you want serious history, not fiction), so she ends up ignoring Charlotte, and any other woman in Cesare's life for that matter, to always give prominence to Lucrezia as the only woman in his life he loved and respected. It is a narrative other scholars have taken more or mess, but Bradford as I said before, does take it to a whole new level, and she kinda has a way of molding the informaton to favour certain pictures about the Borgia family and Cesare that she wants to convey to the reader, she is not alone in doing that, but she does do it a lot throughout her bios, so in this instance, Charlotte and other women, are all presented, according to her, as either politics or bodies to Cesare, which misrepresents Cesare himself and the facts known about his life, but also that of Charlotte and these other women. To be fair, I do think she really believes Charlotte was a non-entity to Cesare, similar in the way Sabatini believed Lucrezia and other women in Cesare's life were non-entities to him, but unlike Sabatini, the reason for Bradford, in my view, is because she is invested with the Cesare and Lucrezia relationship. It's all over the place in her writing, so maybe there you can find an explanation for her claims/thinking about Charlotte, Cesare’s and Charlotte’s relationship, as well as Cesare and women. Now, with other biographers, it's more complex, and it's difficult to understand their thought process in their presentations. I'm gonna say that overall, one possibility they default to thinking and saying Charlotte was an unwilling bride, or that she didn't liked Cesare, is caused by what I said before: they perceive Cesare as this Machiavellian prince, not a monster perhaps, but a bad individual, a “bad man”, and in turn Charlotte herself is described in history as a kind and pious young lady, a “good woman” (that alone is enough to put any woman in the category of victim by some, and it seems it's no different with Charlotte) and that's all she is perceived as of being to them. Given these are two drastically different ideas, it's the opposite of personalities, I think it's then very easy to conclude Charlotte must have not liked Cesare, did not liked him, and that she was forced by her father to marry him, etc, and proceed to ignore the evidence suggesting otherwise. Another possibility could be they don't go deep into the primary sources, and they just take what secondary sources, mainly modern schoalars have said in their works, or maybe, and this can be mixed with the first one, they can't divorce the image of the Legend of Cesare Borgia, the terrible reputation he acquired in history by his enemies from the young Cesare Borgia who went to France in 1499, and whom Charlotte met. But as Bonnaffé points out in his work about Charlotte, in that year of 1499, Cesare's reputation wasn't the one he acquired later by his enemies, therefore King Louis, the French court, Charlotte's family, and Charlotte herself would not have any motive to not like him or not want to associate with him:
"It has been claimed that Louis XII had abused his influence over the King of Navarre to throw his sister into the arms of a Borgia, and Charlotte was made the romantic victim of a selfish and shameless policy. [...]at the time of his marriage, [César] had just left the Roman purple to follow the career of arms; he was not yet the terrible captain, the relentless defender of the patrimony of St. Peter's, that the resentment of his enemies, and talent of Machiavelli have so prodigiously overdone it in the face of history. Would Louis XII have shown so much insistence to keep near him the infernal monster imagined by some authors? Would he have adopted him, by letters patent, in the name and arms of France? Would he have boasted to the d'Albret family and included in the marriage contract the great virtues of the Valentinois, that was so easy to be kept in silence? Anne de Bretagne, Charlotte's guardian, would she have been complicit in a shameful deal for her maid of honor? As well, the trial of the Borgias is very close to being judged; we know at last what the Diarium of Burchard is worth and its often questionable authenticity, the account of Tomaso Tomasi, who never knew César, and the stories of Paul Jove, whose testimony, wage earner or not, is still suspect.
- Inventaire de la duchesse de Valentinois, Charlotte d'Albert, Edmond Bonnaffé.
Maybe there’s an explanation there for them in their conclusions/their thinking about Charlotte, Cesare and their relationship. It is odd because sometimes you have biographers like Sacerdote, who offers such a rich, extensive documentation about this theme (as many others), but whose work is so incredibly bipolar lol. He goes on so many back and forths it can make you dizzy, I gave up trying to understand his thought process by the end of my reading of his book, it’s like two different people, with different views, wrote that book, or it was affected by his moods, idk, but when it comes to Charlotte and Cesare, you have him acknowledging the marriage alliance pleased Charlotte, and that she loved Cesare tenderly, with passion, his words, and she wanted him at her side to Poor Charlotte! who was forced by her father to marry such a dissolute man, a tyrant! and her sad state after Cesare leaves is somehow his fault, even though he argues against this view, and the guilt other scholars have imputed to him, of allegedly abandoning her in France, and not caring about her in one of his chapters in the same book, haha. To me, it always look like historians wanting to do proper historical work, but at the same time not being able to resist playing the gossiper with some things, or they can’t accept certain truths the material reveals about Cesare and his life when looked at seriously, they can’t let go of certain perceptions and assumptions they have about him, so they include all that alongside the material, and it’s often very confusing and incoherent. Miron is an interesting read, though, isn’t? I’m glad you brought him up because I find his work so valuable to learn more about Charlotte herself, and in terms of documentation about her marriage to Cesare. I appreciated his objectivity in regards to that, he was by no means sympathetic to Cesare, and he doesn’t have to be, but he didn't let that get in the way of his research and presentation. Despite how he felt about Cesare personally, (which he made it clear more than one time throughout his work, and some of his personal conclusions about Cesare and Charlotte) he was honest, at least, to accept and put forth that at least as far as Charlotte was concerned, all the evidence shows Cesare treated her with nothing but affection, kindness and respect. He aimed to please her as much as he could, he wasn’t indifferent to her, and although we can’t know the extent of their love for each other, there was love between them, and it wasn’t small. They had an impact with each other and in each other’s lives, that much is clear. It does seems they admired and respected each other, yes, certainly Cesare shows he trusted his wife with his personal affairs, which coming from him, it's always significant. He wasn't an utterly suspicious man as it is sometimes said, but like his father, he was a careful man, and there’s a small group of people, usually family members, with whom he trusted with his personal affairs, and Charlotte is in this group. He trusted her and her capacity it seems, and again that hints at Charlotte's intelligence and refutes the image she was an empty-headed, naive girl who knew nothing of politics and adminstration. It's pretty cool to see later on that Cesare was right in his assessment of her and that she was worthy of his trust, because not only did she do all she could in order to help Cesare and obtain his release from the Spaniard prisons, she administered the territories in his/their possession in a wise, just, and responsible manner until the end of her life. It might have confused Miron to learn all of this, I think, it's the impression I get anyways, but he exposes it all the same, so again, I appreciated that. His work alongside Bonnaffé, Alvisi and Sacerdote are the ones which have the best historical research and exposing of the documents available about Charlotte, Cesare and their relationship, no doubt. Now, let's talk fiction, I think it follows the vices and faults of Cesare's literature I mentioned above, in many adaptations Charlotte doesn't even show up, and when she does, she and her relationship with Cesare receives a quick and poor portrayal. It's portrayed as an expedient marriage, with a Charlotte that has no personality, although in all adaptations I've seen, she is or becomes fond of Cesare. But on Cesare's side, it's where you have all the myths I'd say, with the portrayals of him being cold or indifferent to her, there's at least more than one adaptation where you have a scene of him ridding off and leaving Charlotte behind, which alludes to the historical narrative that he left her in France and never thought of her again because she was nothing but politics to him. In recent adaptations, Showtime's The Borgias and Borgia: Faith and Fear, there's a slight advancement in terms of Charlotte, because at least it gives her a little bit more of personality, and in terms of the relationship, Showtime's the Borgias depicts the whole thing as a political alliance and she is still of no importance to Cesare, their relations to one another is quick and superficial, so no advancement there, but in Borgia: FF, there’s a good advancement, it is the most faithful depiction of their relationship I’ve seen in fiction so far. I'd say it is one of the very few aspects about Cesare and his life in that show which are generally historically correct. For some reason, Fontana seemed to have paid attention to the historical material there, and wanted to follow it to the letter, without distortions. However, both shows do that thing of bringing the future into the past, meaning: In Showtime's The Borgias you have Charlotte saying she couldn't imagine living in Rome, and Cesare saying she wouldn't have to, and in Borgia: FF you have Charlotte saying to herself, once Cesare departs, that she knows she will never see him again. More importantly, both creators feel the need to include Lucrezia there somehow, because both of them, in different ways, put the Cesare and Lucrezia relationship as the main romantic couple of their stories, and here is where I think we get to the root of the problem with the portrayals of Cesare and Charlotte in fiction: Cesare, romantically speaking, is never allow to exist outside of his relationship with Lucrezia, the incest myth is so strong and entwined in his historical figure and life, it always ends up having some influence, no matter what. And it’s also fundamental for the traditional, popular conception of the Borgia family as an immoral, corrupted, dysfunctional family. You can’t exactly have that without the incest myth and the fratricide myth. If Cesare’s romantic life and his relationship with Charlotte are shown honestly, it would undermine the incest myth and Cesare and Lucrezia as the main romantic couple, the star-crossed lovers, the sinners in these stories, which in turn would undermine the traditional portrayal of the Borgia family. Even when authors are not overall unsympathetic to the Borgias, and they do not see them as “evil people”, say for example as Mario Puzo in his The Family (which heavily influenced Neil Jordan’s The Borgias btw), nevertheless they are fond of this layout of the family and of exploring the incest myth and keeping it alive. So naturally, exploring and showing the loving, healthy relationship between Cesare and Charlotte, or even between Lucrezia and Alfonso, without falling into the cliches of portraying Cesare as the bad guy who has incestuous feelings for his sister and it’s jealous of her with Alfonso, and therefore he murders Alfonso, is not interesting to them. There's a preference for the abnormal relationships over normal ones because it sells, the more drama and scandal the better. And for artists, it gives them a free card to do all kinds “artistic choices” or include tales of morality, artificially making links between the Borgia’s times and our own, which makes it easier for the casual reader/watcher to resonate with the story told, or sometimes of using the Borgias to exemplify their personal views about the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican. As a result of all this, similar to history, Charlotte has to be downplayed, stay in the background, or be completely ignored, and the Cesare/Charlotte relationship has to be simplified, they can’t be the main romantic couple, because that would get in the way of the Borgia incest myth, as well as other narratives around the Borgia family, and more specifically about Cesare. But you know, for the most part, their portrayal in fiction is not too bad, and it could be worse for sure, it’s just sad there isn’t much honest content about them, I think they deserve it.

Muse: Channe
Tumblr media
[Bio and other information below the cut!]
Type of Character & Fandom/Source Material: Ulaeri/Elven OC from an unpublished series of books I wrote back around 2005, the main one of which was entitled The Mask of Truth. Channe appeared in the main book and in a number of associated short stories, annexes, archive letters and documents, and historical accounts of that fictional world. I used to write her over at @fxcelessqueen, if you want to peruse her blog, which is left on hiatus for now.
Full Name: Erisae Dheol, but goes by “Channe,” a human name she adopted centuries ago. It is a combination of “Charlotte” and “Anne,” two of her favorite human names.
FC (masked): Matilda Dixon (a.k.a. the Tooth Fairy) from the 2003 horror movie Darkness Falls. (pictured above... albeit with edits on most pics to make her eyes silver)
FC (unmaked/healed): 90s-era Madeleine Stowe (again, to make her eyes silver); this FC is only used in rare occasions that Channe allows her face to be healed, which... she 99% of the time doesn’t do.
VC: Tilda Swinton, not only because of her specific accent, but also her inflections when she talks. She’s very animated, lively, and quirky. She’s also just the right amount of posh and proper combined with an undertone of meaning business and having authority. Like she could kick your ass but also be entirely polite while doing it, haha. Channe definitely has the deep undertones in her voice just like her as well. The example I usually use is this video here. It’s just her talking about endorsing a car fashion line and how she got involved in designing it, so the video itself isn’t important, but it’s good for just hearing a long example of how she speaks to get a sense how Channe sounds.
Race: Ulaeri (from her father) and High Elven (from her mother).
About the Ulaeri: The Ulaeri race is a fictional one that I created. They are an isolated, small magical race that evolved from humans millennia ago. They all have white skin (not pale, white... like vampire skin heh), jet black hair, and silver/reflective eyes. The irises of their eyes look like mirrors or liquid silver and are very sensitive to light. Sunlight, firelight, or the light from magical spells can injure their eyes or blind them if it is too intense. With their eyes, they can see and discern the schools of magic from spell auras, and they can see in total darkness. Ulaeri are naturally nocturnal, with the original members of the race living inside a mountain called The Colony. Their bones emit raw magic (a clear, colorless substance that looks much like heat waves rising off a street), which is magic that has not been differentiated into a specific type or used in spellcasting. Because of this, they are hunted by humans for their bones, which are used to make wands and other magical items. They also all have natural sorcerer-like abilities because of this source of magic, however that source is also their life force. If you cast “dispel magic” on an Ulaeri individual, they will pass out, because the magic that keeps them alive will be dispelled. As long as it’s allowed to regenerate, they’ll be fine, but if you place them inside an anti-magic cage or ward, they will die within minutes. Basically... they are insanely powerful, but they have a few very exploitable weaknesses that kindof balance out how powerful they are, heh.
Gender: Female
Height: 5′ 6″
Age: 591 (Ulaeri live for 300-320 years approximately, but Channe has the lifespan of her mother, which can be up to 800 years)
Sexual/Romantic Orientation: Early on in life she was heterosexual, but now that she understand herself better, she’s asexual. She’s heteroromantic.
Occupation: Well back in the day, she was a queen. Her country no longer exists, and nowadays she prefers a much smaller and quieter life. She is happiest when running either an orphanage or a daycare, but she often has to do so remotely so as not to scare the children with her appearance.
Special Talents: Channe is a psionic warrior, meaning she has the mental abilities of a psion and can also use her powers to summon a magical weapon. She is also a natural born sorcerer, though her psionic abilities are by far the stronger.
Family: Fiuren (father, Ulaeri), Ilyssia (mother, High Elven), Saenna (twin sister), Ranewen a.k.a. Vincent (husband, Drow/High Elven), all deceased in modern AUs. Sri’hen (former lover, Ulaeri), estranged. Emily, Lylia, and Fern (adopted daughters), deceased in modern AUs.
Languages: Ulaeri, High Elven, Common (human)
Clothing: Very antiquated, and a little weird. She doesn’t like people seeing the shape of her body, something that stems from her own traumas when she was very young. So she wears a lot of robes, hoods, flowy things, and bulky things to obscure her figure. Also, she is almost never seen without her mask, certainly never in public. She only takes it off at night to sleep. Or during the day... if she’s able to maintain her natural nocturnal schedule.
Potentially Triggering Material in Threads: War, rape, disfigurement, torture, abandonment, violent murder, physical and mental abuse, suicide
Loves: Dancing (even though she hardly gets the opportunity to do it), tea, her sister, her husband, children of all races, innocence, kindness, honesty.
Hates: Her parents, her former lover (Sri’hen), deception, lies, people who take advantage of her, rapists, violence against women and children, violence against innocent people.
Negative Personality Traits: She’s reclusive and secretive; she can be arrogant and haughty; she can seem aloof or cold if she doesn’t know how to relate to you
Positive Personality Traits: Generous, kind, understanding, tolerant, empathetic, considerate, protective, assertive.
Background & General Info: I... don’t even know what to put here, haha. I have written... thousands of pages of story, history, and background on this character, so it’s kindof hard to sum her up in a nutshell. Also she is extremely private, so unless your character takes the time to really earn some serious trust or has empathic abilities that would allow them to glean more information that she would tell them, most of her past and life should remain private. Suffice it to say that she has suffered A LOT. Her life makes Wanda Maximoff’s look like a picnic. I will tell a little bit about how she got her mask, though, because that’s kindof in everyone’s face. TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR GORE, TORTURE, SUICIDE AHEAD.
When Channe was sixteen, she had a twin sister that she adored who fell in love with a human sorcerer. So... *sigh*. I’m already running into too much explanation here and I just started, heh, but in Channe’s world, her parents’ races are mortal enemies. Ulaeri and High Elves HATE each other. But then both of those races also hate humans. It’s a long story as to why all those feuds exist, but Channe’s sister falling in love with a human was a no-no for so many reasons. The human was the son of a noble as well, and Channe’s family was very poor, which only made things worse. The twins were gorgeous, so the noble had the idea to disfigure Channe’s sister to make his son not want her anymore. Except... because they were identical twins, the thugs he sent to do the deed found the wrong twin and disfigured Channe instead. Basically, they peeled the skin off her face. Everything, including ears eyelids, lips, everything. Her sister was so distraught and had such guilt that she hung herself in the family barn a few days later.
Not only did she have to deal with the death of her beloved twin, but then she had to learn to eat, speak, and just live without a face, which is incredibly difficult and painful. For the first few years, she had no mask, only covering the horrific remnants of her face with a hood. Later, she had a mask carved from wood, which chafed and was very uncomfortable. She now wears a mask that was given to her by her husband, made of magically-altered porcelain (see these posts here and here for more info). But... I’m getting ahead of myself here...
By way of extremely inadequate summary, Channe’s self-esteem tanked after she was disfigured and for the next several decades she was very unkind to herself, fell into a horribly abusive relationship, and was manipulated into becoming a tyrant. She went through a long process of gaining back the trust of the people she oppressed, entering into a much healthier relationship, becoming queen of a country she helped found, and turning it into a haven for people who had nowhere else to go... so orphans, victims of race wars and other wars, people running away from others hunting them, people in search of healing or shelter, you name it. She turned all of her trauma and hardships that she had gone through and used it to fuel her desire to help others. At its height, her country was seen as a haven for those without a voice, and she was seen as a sage ruler.
As history changed and her country declined, Channe let the maps change around her and fell into obscurity. She outlived her adopted children and husband and most other people she knew and became reclusive, but not in a bad way. She just... is living a much quieter life now after being larger than life for hundreds of years, and she’s content with that. In modern AUs, she lives in an old Victorian house and is quite happy there.
I skipped... SO MUCH... but that’s enough to get a basic idea of her. Feel free to ask me anything you like about her! Also if you go to her blog and can see the old-style pages we used to be able to make here on the desktop version of this site, I have many pages set up for her children, husband, lover, other important people, and even one about the Marionette Organization, which Marvel fans may find interesting? It’s basically the Red Room but medieval style, which is funny because I made it years before I ever knew what the Red Room even was. It was originally heavily inspired by the movie Naked Weapon (incidentally starring Maggie Q who also plays Esther, my other muse on this blog heh). It’s VERY similar to the Red Room, right down to a graduation ceremony, except theirs was two-parted and very different from Nat’s. Anyway, Channe HATES the Marionettes for a number of reasons. They’re an assassin organization that kidnaps children (both male and female) and trains them to become assassins and then hires them out to those who can afford to pay for their services. They are a major villainous organization in Channe’s world, and she spent many years of her life trying to bring them and their leader, the Puppetmaster, an extremely coldhearted woman, down. Besides that, in her haven for people who need help leaving their old lives, Channe sheltered several Marionette initiates and even graduates who wanted to redeem themselves and live better lives. One of them ended up being knighted by her and was integral in winning a pivotal war that affected her country.
Potential Starter Ideas:
Oh goodness... I don’t know, heh. She’s very difficult to just... start a thread with. You might catch her out on a walk? In a park? Something like that?
Your muse could go to her house for some reason. By accident, as a solicitor, in need of help, etc.
Your muse could have grown up in one of her orphanages or daycares, or be inquiring about one of them for some reason.
Your muse could have a magical problem they need to discuss with her.
Also both modern and medieval AUs are available, like if you wanted to set something in my fictional medieval fantasy world, I’m game. Otherwise I would just have her in modern times, likely living somewhere in England.
Fun facts:
Channe loves tea. And scones. Preferably raspberry. Secondarily, raisin. This is just fine with Jix, who loves to pick the little fruits out of her scones... which irritates Channe. But he’s so cute she lets him do it. She’s found him in her cupboard many times, picking out the fruit from her scones, leaving little craters in them. XD
Channe loves animals. She’s had several cats and birds as pets over the years, and she’s hosted a number of magical creatures in her home.

ASK EDDIE returns tomorrow!
Join us tomorrow, Thursday, November 11 at 7:00 PM PT on our Facebook page for our first November episode of ASK EDDIE.
FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens.  In this edition, we discuss director Michael Curtiz, actress Carole Landis, THE BIG COMBO, the changing popular perception of Joan Crawford, and which noir stars we’d like to see bio films of. Finally, we answer the question, “If you could have been on the set of any film noir, for the entire duration of the shoot, which film would you choose?” On the cat front, Charlotte decides the show would be better with just her and Anne.
For your calendars — our second and final November episode will stream on Thursday, November 18, 7:00 pm PT on our Facebook page and will be on YouTube on November 19. We will not have an episode on November 25 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
