ep14 where she ditches her appointment with SRQ to storm the Pei house for Pei Wenxuan and she is pissed

and when PWX Uncle tries to stop her she FREAKING SLAPS HIM GHDFJKFGHJKDFHKJ

everyone is terrified of her (including the grandfather), and then she goes off on the Pei house, like:

"how fucking dare you deceive my husband to get him to come home"

"how fucking dare you lay a hand on my husband" (who is Royalty now)

no seriously, who the fuck did this, I will break their hand (really, I will)

she calls them pack of ungrateful dumbasses and snivelling shijia yes-men

reminds them they're only here because of Pei Wenxuan's dad

declares Pei Wenxuan with his intellect and ability better than all of the Pei house and deserves better (then tells them that they have all tried to put obstacles in his way at every turn SHE KNOWS IT)

"are you trying to threaten me by tattling this to my dad (the emperor) idgaf-- who started this again let's break their hand"

Says that they can go ahead banish Pei Wenxuan from the Pei house and she will take him, and they will start another house omfg

Tells Pei Wenxuan's mother that she is failing her child, so she should get out of his way because even if he tolerates it, she cannot tolerate her behaviour

Says Pei Wenxuan has a new family with her and that he has someone who cares for him and loves him (WHAT, LI RONG WHAT??)

Does it feel like they're trying to redeem the dickless bore? idk if he's doing a con on her or they're showing he has real feelings for her wasn't the novel different?

One thing I'm really noticing in the Princess Royal (Grand Princess) adaption is that they will 'play it straight' with characters like Su Rongqing and the Emperor: giving the character similar dialogue and facial expressions as they would have in the novel -- except without PWX or LR's internal dialogue of 🙄 why u lying???

The consequence is that if you take everything at face value, the Emperor seems like a reasonable guy and not up for The Absolute Worst Dad award. Under the surface, the novel reader knows he is acting out a play and coldly calculating every interaction with Li Rong, the Crown Prince, and Consort Ruo. Every single scene with him, Li Rong is in peril and she knows it. She's pretending to be his sweet, obedient 19 year old daughter who believes in him and is following Pei Wenxuan's direction and acting as a puppet, making moves that he has already approved PWX to make. The Emperor's pretending that this play isn't supposed to end with LR and the Crown Prince taken down & the power transferred into Consort Ruo and the other prince's hands.

The viewer can just interpret all the words coming out of a character's mouth as facts & just believe everything they claim about their motives/real agenda as true. Or they recall the implied horrorshow of Life 1 and view all of these interactions with a cynical eye, questioning what else could be under the surface.

With SRQ, that guy is so fucking complicated. I think actually he's portrayed in character. Nothing we have seen isn't .... him. At least so far, as of ep 19 he aligns with the novel.

But 3 different factors: A) The music is romantizing him; B) The audience is given a couple internal-thought voice overs from him, which other antagonists don't get; C) With those voice-overs, the screenwriter has chosen to affirm his love for his brother and LR way earlier than the reader has it confirmed in the novel (where he is intentionally kept a total mystery for far longer, while the reader is the math lady meme, trying to piece together clues to figure him out).

And ultimately, when in SRQ's PoV in the drama, we have to deal with him being the hero of his own story. He is absolutely sincere about himself and, as has been revealed, in his own way he's sincere about wanting LR and his brother to have a good life this time around.

So does that mean the writer intends to do a swerve in the narrative arc and redeem him in the end? It's totally possible. Maybe?

However, not necessarily.

#1 There is a certain refrain from many of the great cnovel/drama villians: I had no choice! You all forced me to this!

We saw it from Shen Yurong in The Double, we saw it from Meng Yao/JGY in The Untamed, and in the novel (and I presume in the drama), we're gonna see it from Su Rongqing.

And it's the reason why they become villians who can't be saved. Because so many people suffer in life or experience unfairness. But they don't turn around and use this as an excuse to enact horrible cruelties on others.

Out of the billions of people in the world, few have no problems but so many of them actively chose to do good, or are willing at least to turn back and be better.

#2 imo the reason LR has historically been bad at reading people's hearts but has an exquisite read of SRQ, his flaws & darkness, is THAT'S HER FUCKING MOM. And I do think ep 16-18 put that out there in the text, if you're looking for it. He and the empress are the same sophisticated aristocrat who is clever & educated but with a narrow perspective limited by their privilege and desperate need to maintain the status quo. So sorry bro, but no wonder she might have settled for marrying you in the first life if you wanted to, but she was never gonna fall in love with you 💀.

PWX can see that SRQ loves her and he thinks that matters, so it scares him. LR has tender nostalgia for her empress mother and her former companion but she's all too aware that their love for her will not necessarily get in the way of stepping on her to protect the social structure of a powerful aristocracy class operating at a higher level above the peasants and restraining the throne. To them, this is safety and stability that guards the realm.

(ofc both those characters are complex and when it comes to LR's life & death we can't be confident on what they will always choose. that's part of what made all the palace drama aspects of the novel incredibly suspenseful. So many of the suppporting characters are layered and tho everything they do makes sense when it happens, you can't often predict people's hard choices when their back is up against the wall)

Story of Kunning Palace and The Grand Princess say that caring about people and trying your best to understand them, wanting what's best for them by listening to what's best for them, can make a huge difference. But not everyone is willing to change.

someone has already said this but for real all of this could have been solved if they were open to a throuple situation man. I actually quite liked su rongqing's actor the more resolute and hardened he got throughout the show and he was a much needed moon to pei wenxuan's sun both orbiting around the princess!!!

overall this definitely dragged in places but it was a really good second chance story

The Princess Royal epic PWX rescue scene, orginal novel

His best hope now is Li Rong.

If Li Rong got the message that he had been taken away by Su Rongqing, she would come over immediately.

He and Su Rongqing are now betting on this game, and the most crucial point is Li Rong.

Whether Li Rong arrives early or late will determine whether he loses or wins.

"Lord Pei is not watching the battle, I'm afraid," Su Rongqing raised his eyes and smiled slowly, "he is waiting for someone, right?"

"Oh?" Pei Wenxuan's heart beat a little faster and he raised his eyebrows, "Does Lord Su think I have someone else to wait for?"

Pei Wenxuan's hands were shackled, so it was not convenient for him to do anything, but he was so strong that he fought Su Rongqing to a standstill, pressing his whole body against Su Rongqing and hitting him with his head with a bang!

Su Rongqing was knocked unconscious by this blow, and Pei Wenxuan also sucked in a breath of cold air from the pain, but he was the one who took the initiative after all, and smashed Su Rongqing with his shackles while he was unconscious!

Su Rongqing recovered after being hit a few times. He had never seen such a disorganised way of hitting before, as he had been trained by a famous teacher.

Li Rong's eyes were wide with anger, she drove her horse and galloped past, flipped off her horse in the crowd and charged straight down.

Pei Wenxuan fell backwards softly, Li Rong held him up. Pei Wenxuan fell into Li Rong's arms, blood stained Li Rong's clothes, and Li Rong's whole body could not help but tremble, her voice started to shake, but she still pretended to be calm, "Let the doctor come over."

As soon as Li Rong's men came over, the killers scurried away and the whole scene was immediately brought under control.

Li Rong made Pei Wenxuan lie down, and as she watched the blood trickle out of Pei Wenxuan's shoulder, her whole body panicked a little.

But she didn't show it on her face and let Pei Wenxuan lean against her, asking the doctor to hurry over.

Pei Wenxuan secretly gave the doctor a wink and held Li Rong tightly again, pleading, "Your Highness, get on the carriage first and go back."

When Li Rong heard Pei Wenxuan's hint, she hesitated for a moment. When Pei Wenxuan saw that she could not make up her mind and heard Su Rongqing get off the carriage, he simply closed both eyes and leaned against Li Rong and fainted.

When Li Rong saw Pei Wenxuan faint, her whole body tensed up. Su Rongqing went behind Li Rong and bent down to pull Li Rong, saying with great concern, "Your Highness, you first ......"

The words did not finish, Li Rong backhanded a slap!

A crisp sound landed on Su Rongqing's face, and Su Rongqing's movements froze. Su Zhizhu hurriedly stepped forward, "Gongzi ......"

"I'll hate you for the rest of my life. When the time comes, I will pull you up to the guillotine with my own hands, slit your neck bit by bit, then I will cut you into pieces and burn you to ashes in a fire, and then spill you into different rivers in the sky and the sea, and feed you to the fish! I want your bones to be lost to reincarnation and to sink into the sea of misery for all eternity."

"Do you understand?!"

Li Rong finished speaking and turned to leave, when Su Rongqing suddenly spoke, "The reason why Your Highness does not hate me,"

Li Rong paused in her steps and heard Su Rongqing's tone with a smile, "It is only because, never loved."

Li Rong did not say anything.

Pei Wenxuan was in the carriage, he raised his hand to lift the curtain and looked at the two of them quietly.

"Perhaps."

Li Rong's tone was light.

With that, she walked towards Pei Wenxuan's carriage.

"There's still Pei Wenxuan after I leave," Su Rongqing watched Li Rong leave, he couldn't help but speak out, "There's still someone else after Pei Wenxuan leaves, Your Highness, why do you have to be persistent?"

"It's not the same."

Li Rong turned her head, she looked at Su Rongqing, she smiled up at him in a rare moment.

"Pei Wenxuan, in my heart," Li Rong lifted her hand and placed it gently on her chest, "is not the same as anyone else."

"Su Rongqing," Li Rong looked at him with a few moments of disappointment in her eyes, "in fact, for so many years, you have never really understood me."

"I understand Your Highness!" Su Rongqing suddenly raised his voice, as if it was his only insistence.

Li Rong smiled bitterly, "No, you don't understand."

"If you understood me, you would, at least, have made your move to kill him a little earlier."
