                   caroline has always been a light sleeper.     the faintest of sounds were able to rouse her from a deep sleep,     leaving her unable to drift off & cranky.     she supposes that’s why she’s able to hear @salvatoraes​ having a nightmare on her living room couch.     with her mind still foggy from sleep,     caroline races down the stairs to check on her best friend.    she finds him already awake,     the sound of his racing heart making her frown.     “          hey . . .          ”     caroline whispers,     slowly taking a seat next to stefan.     she watches him in silence for a few minutes,      letting him work on his breathing on his own.     “          was it the safe again?          ”     she asks,     her voice sounding loud in the dead silent room.     caroline scoots closer,     laying her head on stefan’s bare shoulder.     she’s known for putting her foot in her mouth more often than not,      so she’d rather offer him some quiet comfort than say something that might trigger him all over again.     “          i’m here if you want to talk about it.     if not,     we can just . . . stay here in silence.     or watch some tv.     whatever you need.          ”

                   caroline keeps her eyes fixed on the wall across from her.     there’s a blanket around her shoulders that she doesn’t remember reaching for,     which means someone must’ve grabbed it for her.     sookie,     probably.     as if the thought summoned her,     the blonde speaks up.     caroline finally drags her gaze away from the wall to look over at the other.     “          i know.          ”     she whispers,     tears welling in her eyes immediately.

                   blue eyes go wide as saucers,     taking in lexi’s complexion get more & more pale with each passing second.     “          what happened?          ”     she asks,     rushing to the other vampire’s side & wrapping an arm around her shoulders to lead her to the couch.     caroline lowers lexi onto the cushions before crouching down next to her,      brushing a lock of golden hair out of her friend’s face.     “          don’t tell me you got yourself bitten by a werewolf.          ”

                   she knew someone would come after her sooner or later.     her old friends were terrible at respecting people’s wishes.     what caroline did not expect,     however,     was to see elena strolling into the bar all by herself.     a wicked smile spreads across crimson lips & head tilts to the side, blonde curls bouncing slightly with the movement.     some sleazy patron     -     who was well on his way to becoming caroline’s dinner for the night     -     continues to rambling about his brand new car & how he’s planning to spend the summer in the hampton,     but she pays him no mind.     “          well,     well,     well,     look what the cat dragged in.          ”     caroline drawls,     resting her elbows on the counter & leaning forward while watching elena make her way over.     “          & with no salvatore by your side?          ”     she tsks,     “          don’t tell me you found someone more attractive & dropped them like hot potatoes?     that’s not nice,     elena.          ”

                   “          you know i’d never hurt you,     right?          ”     caroline’s voice is nothing but a faint whisper,    nearly carried away by the frigid breeze that sweeps around them.     matt finding out about her being a vampire was not something she’d planned for.     she was certain he was still under compulsion,     blissfully unaware about the supernatural beings that lurked in the dark corners of mystic falls.     “          i’ve got pretty good control when it comes to my . . .     urges.          ”     she grimaces at the word,     gaze darting up to meet his.     “          i’m still me,     matt.          ”

                    “          i don’t think it’s stopping anytime soon.          ”     caroline announces,     watching the storm through the window.     when she’d looked up the forecast that morning,     a freakin’ downpour was not mentioned at all.     hence why she’d invited @shesdaylight​ to spend the day at her parents old cabin.     she’d planned for a day of margaritas by the lake & sunbathing,     not being stuck indoors because of a dumb storm.     with a sigh,     the blonde makes her way back to the living room & plops down on the couch next to her friend.     “          shall we break out the wine & board games?          ”

                    the urge to roll her eyes is strong,     but,     unfortunately,     a handful of people are staring at the two of them.     being peeved at your fake husband within ten minutes of arriving is not a good look,     so caroline inhales deeply & looks at @neverafters​​ with a beaming smile plastered onto crimson lips.     “          do i have to remind you everyone here thinks we are?          ”     she shoots back,     looping her arm through his & giving his bicep a tight squeeze with her free hand.     “          now smile,     honey     —     my parents are coming over.          ”
