"So?" Yaku sits down at the lunch table, slamming his lunch, making Kuroo jump a little in his seat.
"So what?" Kuroo pretends to not know what the blonde is asking for.
Yaku clicks his tongue, "Can you believe him?" He gets Kai's attention, "He doesn't shut up about this girl for almost 3 years and when he finally hangs out with her, suddenly he has nothing to say?!"
Kai chuckles, "I hate to say it Kuroo, but he's right."
"Shhh!" Kuroo looks around, making sure nobody is listening, "Will you shut your big mouth? Somebody will hear."
"Like everybody doesn't know." Kenma rolls his eyes.
"They don't! Only you guys do." Kuroo frowns.
"Not true." Yaku shakes his head.
"The other guys on the team know as well." Kenma says before focusing back to his phone. Kuroo continues to roll his eyes.
"Well, are you not gonna tell us?" Yaku says, still speaking very loudly.
Kuroo can't fight the smile creeping up on his face, just thinking of you makes his entire being swoon.
"He's blushing." Yaku nudges Kai, "God, you're so down bad." Kuroo ignores him and continues to eat his lunch.
"C'mon Kuroo, we've endured 3 years of you talking about her, just tell us what happened." Yaku is still determined to get this man to talk.
"After the captains meeting, we got some food and talked for a little." Kuroo stays quiet, remembering how pretty you looked the entire time you were with him. "She got onigiri and I payed, I wish I could've seen her surprised face again, it was adorable." He continued to ramble on.
Yaku was deeply invested on his captains love life, he listened to Kuroo go on and on about you.
"The way she had her hair suited her so well, and she even playfully nudged me, I swear my skin is shining from the spot where she touched me—" He goes to show his teammates the spot where you touched him, but he was interrupted.
"Okay okay, lover boy, I asked for how it went, not for you to declare your love to her for the millionth time." Yaku rolls his eyes, already hearing him talk about how pretty and nice you are.
"You asked, I'm simply just telling you how it went." Kuroo crosses his arms over his chest.
"No, I didn't ask for you to gush all over her." The blonde glares.
"Alright, doesn't matter." Kai intervenes, "What happened after eating?"
"I was going to walk her home, but we heard thunder so she quickly left before I could offer." Kuroo's smile falters a little.
"That's why you don't have a girlfriend." Yaku shakes his head.
"He doesn't have one cause all he does is talk about
Y/n, but never makes a move." Kenma quietly says. "You guys are being loud." He pockets his phone and begins to walk away from them.
"Who waits 3 years to finally talk to their crush? I thought you were more bold." Yaku goes on.
"You've never had one either." Kuroo rolls his eyes, "Plus I get nervous around her. Look at her."
Yaku and Kai groan, not wanting to hear him go on again. It's no hate to you, they think you're kind, but their friend is a wimp who is making them suffer by not doing anything to advance your guys' non existent relationship.
You're sitting on top of a desk near your coach, Himari right next to you as she chews on some pocky.
"Don't you guys have better things to do?" Coach Mori raises an eyebrow at the two of you.
"No." You both say in unison and she rolls her eyes, you two spend way too much time together. You're basically psychic.
"Tell us some drama." Himari has a glint in her eye.
"There is none. And if there was, I wouldn't be allowed to tell." Mori glares and continues to type on her computer.
"Aw, come one. Just a little? What about that guy you were talking to?" You swung your feet.
Mori turns in her seat, "What about the boys' captain?"
Himari looks confused, "Kuroo Tetsurou? He's cute."
"He's flirting with her." Mori points her finger to you.
"No way." Himari is baffled.
"What? You're delusional." You laugh. "He is cute, though." You whisper to Himari and she lightly pushes you.
"You should've seen them at the captains meeting."
"Bro, change the rules so vice captains can go, I need to see this." Himari laughs.
"We were being friendly!" You raise your hands as if it's obvious. "You never used to bug me about the previous captains."
"Because the previous captains didn't look at you the way he does." Mori rolls her eyes. "Now shoo, the bell is about to ring."
"Nothing is going on." You clarify and your coach plugs her ears, not wanting to hear any of it. "Can you believe her?" You say to Himari as the two of you walk out of class.
"I'd have to see for myself." Himari shrugs and you gasp.
"You believe her?" You feel betrayed.
"Mori is never wrong when it comes to guys." Himari says confidently.
"Oh yeah? Well she was wrong about the last guy she went on a date with, he stood her up." You furrow your brows.
"I meant for other people." She laughs, "Remember when Izumi got cheated on last year? Mori called it."
How could you forget, she warned her just by meeting the boy once. "Coincidence. I mean, look at him." You open the door for class and walk in.
"Or when she knew my cousin was gonna marry her boyfriend. After they dated for a week." She emphasized.
You roll your eyes, "Uh huh."
"She's never wrong. Now I know Kuroo Tetsurou has a crush on you." She winks and pokes your cheek. You continue to deny, you had just gotten to get to know him.
Classes trudged on, it was the second week and you're already sick of it. You were looking forward to practice today, the practice match with the boys had you almost on the edge of your seat.
The lineup you drew during the captains meeting was the one being used for this practice match. It wasn't completely set in place, your coach would make tweaks where ever needed.
You and a few other members began to change, you could barely hold your excitement, you were basically buzzing. Without a word, you quickly left the club room and made your way to the gym.
"She's happy." Misaki, your libero laughs.
"The girl's been begging for 3 years for this." Himari sighs, closing her locker and leaves.
A few boys were already in the gym setting up, you figured they had it down.
"Um, excuse me?" You hear a voice and turn, seeing Kenma stand before you. "Do you want us to put the net at the girls height?"
"No, the men's is fine. We practice with it anyway." You say and continue to look at the rotations on the clipboard. Kenma's a little surprised, but goes to the others to tell them to raise it a bit more.
"You seem ready." Coach Mori chuckles, taking her clipboard from you, "You got them down, don't worry."
"I was just memorizing the others', in case we get confused." You say.
"Go stretch." She rolls her eyes, you begin forming a small circle of your teammates as they slowly join.
"Wait so in the 2nd rotation I serve, but once we lose the point Rikako comes in for me?" Emi, your right side asks. Rikako was a first year, and a damn good one, her passes were amazing.
"Yeah, we need your serves." Himari says, watching you from the corner of your eye trying to decide who's got serve and who's receiving.
You jog back to your coach, who orders the team to huddle up. "We got serve." You say.
"You finally won a coin toss!" Aiko slaps your back, she was another passer.
"I don't always lose?" You frown, your coach gets all of your attention again and begins to go over rotations quickly.
"Go out there and play." Your coach breaks you all out and the starters head onto the court. You started off in the right front, Himari behind you with the ball, next to her was Keiko; a middle blocker, she was waiting for Misaki to sub in for her, Naomi was next to her in left back, Emi in left front, then Mei standing in front of the net, checking out the boys' heights. She was 6'1.
Kuroo started in the left front, then Kai, and Yamamoto in right front. Yaku was in right back for Inuoka, Kenma was in middle back, and Fukunaga was in left back.
Your coach hides her hand behind her back, telling Himari where to serve.
"You nervous?" Kuroo asks you from the other side of the net.
You scoff, "Not in the slightest." He smirks and pulls back to hide Kenma so he doesn't have to pass. You get ready to switch with Emi, as soon as the whistle blows you're in the left position with your arms ready by your head.
You watch the ball go over the net and aim for Kuroo, he passes the ball with ease, giving Kenma an easy ball to work with. You watch Kenma carefully, dissecting his every move.
His back was arched slightly in mid air, giving you the hint that he was going to give it to Yamamoto, "Right!" You yell and were correct when the ball left his hands.
You and Mei get ready to block him, she takes away his cross shot easily because of her insane height, meanwhile you were really only good for getting touches.
"Straight!" Naomi yells and prepares to receive the ball.
Yamamoto yells something you didn't quite catch, but he hits right through Mei's block, she wasn't expecting such a hard hit. The ball begins the fall short in front of Misaki, but she saves it with one hand.
"Himari, left!" You yell, knowing the original play was out of the question when the receive was wonky. Himari knows she can count on you, she sends the ball your way and you wait for the ball to reach its peak, then beginning your approach.
You may have been on the shorter side of your team, but you worked a ton on your vertical. You soar into the air, seeing Kai and Kuroo's strong arms, you decided to give it your all and try to break through the block.
Which you did, it landed in front of Kenma after it ricocheted off of Kai's hands. You land back down and begin cheering with your team.
"Nice save, my bad." Mei apologies.
"Don't worry, you'll get it." Misaki encourages.
"Great set as always, Himari." You smile, giving her a high five and she blows you a kiss as a joke.
"Nice job, ladies, get another Himari." Your coach nods to her. You roll the ball towards her and you face forward again.
You watch Kenma bring his team together and say a few things.
"I know you were scared to try and hit through my block." Kuroo sassily said, walking back.
"Oh please." You laugh. "I could any day."
"We'll see." He gives you a wink then goes back to pass.
The whistle blew and the ball was sent over, you perceptively watched Kenma, you knew he liked to play tricks with his eyes and fake body movement.
This time Yaku gave a perfect pass to Kenma and he sets it to Kuroo, he gives a powerful hit in between the gap of the block.
It slams right in between Misaki snd Naomi, both fail to get a hand on the ball.
"Sorry, I'll do a better job of closing the gap." Mei cringes at herself for such a stupid mistake.
"It's all good, focus on the next one." You pat her back.
"We'll do better too!" Naomi nods to Misaki.
"We're good guys, cmon let's go, next point." Himari says. The rallies were back and forth, to be honest you weren't really looking at the score too often, you were having so much fun despite how competitive you could get.
Point after point, you all learned something and were able to adapt for the next point. Both sides had great back and forth rallies, but ultimately, you lost the first set.
"Don't be too down, we've never played a boys team before. This is new." Your coach said.
"We're not too far off in height, it's mostly just Kuroo and Kai we have to worry about." Himari states, out of breath, but a huge smile on her face. You can tell she's having fun too.
"We got this next one, guys, let's go." You break the team out and begin the second set. This time your team is the one to back it up by one rotation. You're in middle front, Emi wasn't the best at receiving serves, so you pulled back to hide her further in the back.
You wipe your shoes to make sure they weren't slippery before getting into position. Yamamoto is now up to serve, you are now starting to question why Kenma wasn't their first server.
He serves to you, it was very powerful, but you were able to read it and direct it towards Himari, your arms stung a little after receiving it.
It was a perfect pass, so Himari went for the quick attack with Mei, which successfully made it over the net, despite Kuroo being amazing at blocking. It was received easily and thrown back at your team by Fukunaga.
The game ended with you guys taking the second set, but they took the third. You all shake hands, out of breath. Even though your team lost, you were happy to finally be able to play with the boys. It was definitely great practice for both sides.
"What happened?" Kuroo says, finding you after the practice match, you were drinking from your water bottle talking to your coach, a few members were taking down the net.
"I believe you lost a set." You shrugged and laughed. Your coach eyed the boy, watching his mannerisms with you.
"I believe you lost the game." He chuckled and you deadpan.
"Next week. Just you wait." You say, "Oh, I was meaning to talk to you about your lineup." He turns his head like a confused puppy. "Why don't you have Kenma serve first?"
"Yamamoto has a good serve." He says.
"You should try having Kenma serve, that way he gets more back row time and you'd have 3 hitters in the front for longer." You explain.
He thinks for a moment, "That could work. I'll tell coach." He smiles, "Thanks. You play good, by the way. I haven't been able to watch many matches, but I've heard some things."
"Bad things?" You raise an eyebrow.
"No," He laughs, "of course not. I've heard your hits are powerful and you read the ball well."
"Thank you, Kuroo." You say. "You know, we'd always go and support your games, but I see that's not reciprocated." You jokingly roll your eyes.
"Hey, cut us some slack," He chuckles, "We'll be present more often." He promises. Coach Nekomata calls Kuroo over and he gives you a small smile before leaving.
You're left with your coach and Himari, who you didn't realize came over to gossip with her sister. You deadpan looking at them.
"She's telling me what her great mind is predicting." Himari smiles widely.
"Oh shut up." You roll your eyes. "I don't believe your so called gift."
"I'm never wrong, hun." Coach Mori shrugs and begins to pack up. "You're always welcome to ask for my opinion."
"Yeah sure." You narrow your eyes at her, "You ready?" Himari nods and takes one last sip of her water bottle before putting it with the rest.
"You FINALLY talked to her in person, wow." Yaku smiles at his tall friend.
"Will you be quiet?" Kuroo looks around.
"Everybody knows, dude." Yamamoto says, "I'm surprised she doesn't with how much you look at her." He laughs. "Can't blame you, though."
Kuroo turns his head so quickly at his teammate, "Nuh uh, you're not allowed to be jealous when you haven't done shit." Yaku laughs and walks away.
Kuroo rubs his forehead, his team was going to make him age so quickly with how much they stress him out.

hi y/n,
i've been telling my mom about our letters, she seems to look forward to your responses as much as i do! today she went grocery shopping and there happened to be a really big sale on flower seeds. i'm not actually sure what kinds of flowers she bought, but she bought a lot for you. she wants to meet you someday! my little brother does too. if there's ever a time you can or want to, please come over for dinner! the seed packets should be in the envelope. i hope you're able to make some use of them!
speaking of seeds, i had some poppyseed muffins for breakfast this morning. i remember you mentioning liking muffins. my little brother has really been into baking (not so much cooking). he made a lot so ill bring you a small basket on monday, hopefully you'll be able to share with some of the gardening club members. if you'd like, i can bring you whatever my brother ends up baking, he always makes big bunches.
i've also been meaning to tell you that my coach wants to talk to you. he's that one sketchy looking guy that works at the convenience store near our school (don't tell him i said that). he's been asking about the flowers you arranged for kiyoko and wants to order some as well. if you can, please come by during practice when you're not busy!
take care, sugawara

about the flowers!
➤ poppies: i wasn't originally gonna do one of these, but i mentioned poppyseeds so i thought that i might as well! poppies overall have a lot of war symbolism. though they also hold meaning to things like death and sleep and peace. red, white, and black poppies especially tend to represent the fallen soldiers from past war efforts, most notably ww1. i found that purple poppies actually represent the fallen and hurt animals from war (which was really sad to learn!!). BUT!!! poppies aren't all about death and war. colors like pink can symbolize platonic love and sympathy while orange symbolizes good health and regeneration!

guys my joshua headcannon is that if the person he likes gives him sweets he’ll eat them even though he doesn’t like them (sweets) very much 😭 he won’t tell them about it either he’ll just keep accepting the sweets and eating them cause he appreciated the effort they went through to make it. and one day he’ll think about making sweets for the person he likes as a thank you for always giving him such a yummy treats. he’ll spend so much time researching what he thinks they’ll like (and what he thinks he’s capable of making) and once he’s picked smth he’ll do a bunch of trials to make sure they taste good before actually giving it to the person he likes. and they like it so much that he decides to try baking a bit more often to see them smile more (RAAAAAAA). so it just becomes an exchange like once a week. and eventually when they get into a relationship he’ll awkwardly break the news that he doesn’t ACTUALLY like sweets. his partner won’t believe him at first because he ate SO MANY sweets that they made for them and shua will just say he liked them cause they made it for him 😫😭🫶

"Oh he wants you so bad." Himari squeals as she's setting up the volleyball nets.
You click your tongue and turn around, "You and Mori, I swear."
"He does! Everything you're telling me is like straight out of a movie." Himari smiles widely, she was too amped up right now to set up the net.
You rolled your eyes, "It's not like that—"
"Do you like him?" She interrupts you.
"What?-uh, Himari, you—ugh!" You say completely caught in a lie and Himari falls into a fit of laughter.
"You so do. I can tell." She smiles. "Told you Mori is never wrong when it comes to relationships."
"We're not in a relationship. We're friends, and I don't like him." You glare at her. More and more players begin to come into the gym and you give one last final glare at her to shut up.
You see Kuroo come in and your eyes remain on him a little bit too long for your comfort. 'I don't like him. I don't like him.' You mentally say to yourself. 'I need to focus on the upcoming tournament.' You repeat.
It was the last day of the week and with both teams' busy schedules, the practice match with them was today. You try to focus up for it, but your mind keeps wandering to him.
"I changed the line up like we talked about a few days ago." Coach Mori gets your attention and you shake every other thought out of your head to listen.
"What was wrong with—oh, wait I remember." You recall the conversation. "Yeah, so Naomi and I are switched, right?"
She nods, "Yeah, let's see how this works out." She looks at you suspiciously, "You seem distracted."
You frown at her, "Do not. Himari and I—I don't know even know." You laugh. "She's distracting me."
"That is so not true!" Himari laughs, dropping the net and running to tell Mori about your 'date' last night with the captain.
"Keep your voices down!" You look around and see that everybody is busy and distracted. "Everything's fine. He and I are just friends." You clear up, but a tiny part of you really does enjoy being with him.
You like how he makes you laugh. You like his cute hair and how it's messy, but it fits him. You like how he's competitive and gives his all in games.
Your mind wanders and Himari brings you back, "She's even daydreaming about him!"
"Was not!" You say a bit too loudly, your face feels warm and you look away.
"Okay okay, as much as I love this, we need to focus up for the practice match." Coach Mori says and Himari whines to her about how this is a monumental thing.
You talked to a few other teammates while you stretched, trying to forget about everything and get your mind in the game.
"When are you going to ask her out?!" Yamamoto grins at his captain.
"I don't even know if she likes me back." Kuroo says, he had just finished telling every living soul who would listen to him about his dinner with you, that wasn't really a date, but could maybe possibly be considered one?
"Well, she hasn't told you to go away." Yaku laughs, but with a single glare from Kuroo, he pipes down.
"Just go for it. If she doesn't like you, then she doesn't like you. And you'll finally shut up about her." Kenma says as his eyes are glued to his phone.
"It's not that simple!" Kuroo look around nervously, trying to make sure nobody else was listening.
"It really is." Kenma says.
"Oh, and you have so much experience to talk from?" Kuroo crosses his arms.
"Do you at least have her number?" Kai asks, trying to work through the situation Kuroo has put himself in.
Kuroo stays quiet and scratches the back of his head when asked. "Uh.."
"You don't have her number?!" Yaku yells, you turned your head at the sudden volume, not sure what's got Yaku so riled up.
"Will you shut your goddamn mouth for once in your life?" Kuroo whisper-yells at Yaku, and nervously looks around at the number of eyes on them. "No. I haven't gotten her number, YET." He emphasizes.
"So you finally got the balls to hangout with her after three years, are we going to have to wait another three for you to get her number?" Yaku jokes, making a few members of the team laugh.
"Ask her today." Kai encourages.
"I-I can't just ask, what if she thinks I'm weird?" Kuroo says worried.
"She won't, just use a pick up line or something." Yaku rolls his eyes.
"Bro, have you ever seen him flirt? Like ever?" Yamamoto laughs, "I'm sorry, cap, but you have no rizz."
"Anything that comes out of your mouth is brainrot, you know that?" Kenma says after being quiet for a little. The two begin to bicker back and forth.
"Just be nice. You've managed to talk to her at school and hangout." Kai says, ignoring the two younger class-men.
"Yeah, but I thought I was going to die when I did." Kuroo chuckles nervously, he then feels a tap on his arm and turns around.
You smile up at him, "We need to decide who serves first."
He takes a few seconds to respond, trying to calm himself down, "Yeah-uh, yeah for sure." He says quickly.
"I'll let you call it." You smile and flip the coin, he doesn't take his eyes away from you the entire time. He goofily smiles at you, watching your determined expression as you watch the coin.
"Heads." He confidently says while it's in the air. It comes back down and you catch it and flip it on your hand.
"Heads." You frown and confirm.
"We'll serve." He smiles, his eyes traveling to your hair, liking how you did it today.
"Good luck." You say and go back to your team to give them the bad news.
"Back it up one!" Your coach says and you move to middle back. Misaki was to your right and Rikako was on your left. You had your hands on your knees as you waited for Kenma to serve.
"Watch short, Himari. He's coming for you." Misaki says and gets into position to receive. Himari nods and watches the ball as Kenma indeed does serve it to her.
Himari manages to get the ball up high, "Misaki!" She says.
Misaki runs and jumps right before the line and without any words said, everybody began their approaches.
You made eye contact with Misaki just as her hands were about to touch the ball, she gives you a light toss right to your hand and you slam it to the other side.
Fukunaga gets under it and receives it perfectly, making you frown. You quickly move to left back to get ready for the counter attack. Misaki goes to middle back and Rikako to right back.
Kenma sets to Yamamoto, he hits the ball with all he's got and it's flying quickly towards you. Your arms are already in position to receive the ball, what you weren't expecting was for the force of it to be so much, you take most of its power and momentum and end up falling to the ground.
"Nice receive!" The bench yells and you quickly get up, Himari sets a quick to the middle and Kuroo easily gets in front of it to stop it, you notice the ball flying towards the ground quickly, you throw your body and manage to get a hand on the ball to save it.
"It's up!" You yell and get out of the way.
Mei hesitates on taking the ball, "I got it!" Himari yells and Mei moves out of her way, Himari sets the ball to Naomi.
Naomi manages to get it to the other side and Yaku receives it annoyingly perfectly. Everybody watches Kuroo begin his approach, but lags his jump, effectively tricking the blockers. He smirks and hits the ball with nobody in his way.
You're not able to react quickly, but you manage to get one hand on the ball and do a one arm receive. "Sorry, Himari!" You say, it was a little off.
"It's fine!" She yells back and jumps to set, but last second she does a setter dump.
Yaku dove for the ball and it flies in the air, back onto your side. "Free ball!" You all yell. "I go!" Misaki says and bumps the ball to Himari.
"A!" You yell for your position, knowing there wasn't a play. Himari sets you the ball and you jump into the air, you could see the blockers hands and aim for their fingertips, you ricochet the ball off of Kai's hands and it finally hits the ground.
You're panting, but cheering with your team. "God damn." Himari breathes heavily.
"You guys need to do more cardio!" Coach Mori yells from the sideline and coach Nekomata got a kick out of it.
"Nice job, guys." You smile and high five everyone on the court. You all rotate and now you're in left back. "Serve up a good one, Himari." You kick her the ball and she picks it up. She nods and looks at her sister for where to serve.
Rikako switches with Emi and you give her a high five as she joins the front row. You get into position and as the whistle blows, Himari serves the ball onto the other side. She served it hard, but it was easily picked up, "Watch left!" Emi yells.
The ball goes to Yamamoto and you brace yourself for another hard hit, this time he hits a line shot and Himari receives it, she too falls onto the floor after from the impact and power of the ball.
"Get up, Himari!" Coach Mori yells.
"I got it!" Misaki yells and does the same thing as before, "Naomi!" She tosses it to her.
You're watching Naomi's movements and she's confident in the air, you softly smile, knowing she was about to slam the ball, and she does. It wasn't able to be picked up from the guys and you all cheer. "Marry me, Naomi." Himari dramatically says and praises her.
"Buy me dinner first." Naomi winks and accepts everyone's praise.
"Jesus." Yaku chuckles, "My bad, guys." He takes the blame.
"You're good." Kuroo slaps his back and they all get in position to receive again. Himari goes back to serve again, she was able to continue the streak for one more play, but the next was slammed right onto your court by Kuroo.
"Sorry, I read it wrong." Misaki apologizes.
"It's okay, we'll get the next one." You say and go back to receive. Yamamoto goes back to serve and you already know it's going to be intense.
The ball looks like it's going to you but it quickly curves and Misaki wasn't expecting it, the ball ricochets off her arms, "Fuck," she mumbles, "Sorry, I'll get the next one." She says determined.
"You sleeping on me, Misaki? Watch his hand and his finish." Coach Mori reminds and Misaki laughs and nods, knowing she wasn't going to make the same mistake again.
Yamamoto does another serve and it curves just the same, Misaki receives it flawlessly, "Nice pass!" You yell and Himari gets her hands on the ball, she sets it behind her to Emi and she hits the ball, Kuroo gets a touch and it slows the ball down for Yaku to pass it perfectly to Kenma. Kai hits the ball and it goes straight to you, your arms are starting to hurt from receiving all of these hits.
"Sorry, Himari!" You say, it was a little off. It didn't matter to her, she was able to get under it quickly and managed to do a quick to Mei, the attack makes it over and the boys pick it up and get ready to counter attack.
Yamamoto hits the ball and it slams onto the ground. "Hey, we're good. We've got this next one." You encourage and circle up with your team.
It goes back and forth, both teams scoring left and right. You feel yourself not fully immersed in the game, your passes have been off and your hits aren't really going where you want them to.
You're frustrated as you go to serve, you look at your coach and see where she wants you to serve. You take a deep breath and throw the ball into the air. You hit it and it immediately feels off, it goes straight into the net.
"You're good, make it up with a pass." coach Mori encouraged and you nod. Kuroo eyes you and frowns a little.
Kenma is up to serve again and you get in position. He serves it to you, the ball floats a little and you receive it with your hands.
"Sorry, it's off!" You say for what felt like the millionth time.
"You're good, shake it off." Coach Mori says and watches the ball. Himari sets to Keiko in the middle, Fukunaga receives it and Kenma does a quick with Kuroo.
You're still caught up on the sloppy receive you did that you don't notice the ball until last minute and it's too late to use your hands or anything, the ball quickly hits your face. Kuroo had a powerful hit, so it hurt even more.
The room gasps as they see you fall back and hold your face. You look up and feel something warm come down your face, you quickly use your hand to feel and see you're bleeding from your nose.
Your eyes widen and cover your nose, "Oh my god, are you okay?!" Kuroo rushes towards you, feeling awful that he hit you.
"Yeah—yeah I'm okay." You finally say, everything moving in normal time now and not in slow motion.
"You're bleeding. I'm so sorry." He says and looks at you worried. Somebody hands him a towel and he removes your bloody hand away from your nose and he softly places the towel on your face, not wanting to hurt you any further.
"Do you mind taking her to the nurse?" Coach Mori asks Kuroo, to him her smile was innocent, but to Himari and the rest of your teammates, there was a more devious meaning to it.
"Yeah, okay—yeah I can do that." He says and helps you up, he doesn't care if blood gets on him as he touches your hands. He has a hold on you in case it was a concussion and you'd sway. "I'm so so sorry." He apologizes again as he leads you to the nurse.
"It's okay." You say, "It was my fault."
"And how in the world is me hitting you in the face your fault?" He narrows his eyes at you.
"I wasn't paying attention. I was too in my head." You say.
He shakes his head, "I'm really sorry. Does it hurt?"
"What do you think?" You giggle and he smiles, happy that you're not mad at him and he thinks maybe he didn't completely ruin his chance with you.
"Yeah, I'm a little strong, sorry about that." He not-so-subtly brags.
You rolled your eyes and he laughs, he still has a hand on you and you're now hyper aware of it. Weirdly, you're craving more. You shake your head and think you're concussed because you're having these thoughts.
"You alive?" Kuroo notices you had gone quiet.
"Yeah-uh, I'm okay." You say. "Just still thinking about how I was playing."
He hums, "You were playing great."
You shake your head, "My receives were bad, and my hits—"
"That's not what it looked like to me." Kuroo smiles, a faint blush on his face, but he'll blame it on just playing a match if you ask.
"Thanks, Kuroo, but—"
"Nuh uh, I won't hear it." He says and shakes his head repeatedly. His hair following his movements, making his bed head even more cute. 'What am I thinking?' You think to yourself.
"Thank you." You say and look away, feeling your face burn. He opens the door to the nurse and lets you go first. His hand never leaving your back.
"Hi! Is everything alright?" The nurse asks, her eyes slightly widen when she sees Kuroo.
"I got hit in the face, my nose is bleeding." You say and the nurse nods, quickly taking you over to the sink to see the damage and clean the blood up. Luckily the bleeding had for the most part stopped, she hands you a tampon looking thing and plugs your nose with it.
"Tetsurou, there's a sink in the back you can use to wash your hands." The nurse says. You're a little confused as to why she used his first name. You watch Kuroo leave and clean up. "I'm going to ask you a few questions, okay?"
You nod, knowing the questions she was going to ask were to determine if you had a concussion. You answer her questions and luckily you don't have a concussion. Just a headache from the blood loss and your face was still stinging from where the ball had made contact.
Kuroo comes back, "Are you okay?" He asks you. You nod and remove the ice pack from your face to show him the damage he did, his frown deepens.
"You couldn't have hit her anywhere else?" The nurse laughs at him and he sheepishly looks away.
"It was an accident." He can feel her eyes on him.
"I'm sorry my brother hit you." The nurse says and you're taken back.
"Brother?" You ask and look at the two of them. You guess you could see the resemblance, although her hair was a lot more tame than Kuroo.
"This is my sister," Kuroo introduces you, "And this is Y/n."
Her eyes widen at your name, "Y/n, this is—”
Kuroo quickly cut her off, "Yeah, this is Y/n." He gulps, "I—uh told you she was the captain for the girls team." He glares at her.
"Oh, that's right." She smiles, "I'm Tokiko. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you, too." You smile politely back. "Am I good to play still?"
She hums, "Yup! All good to go."
"Shouldn't you rest? Doesn't your head hurt?" Kuroo asks worriedly.
"I'm okay." You smile, "I've taken some hard hits." He frowns when you say that. "Besides, I've still got to beat you."
He laughs, "Alright, let's go, then." He waves bye to his sister and you politely wave as well.
"How long has she been working here?" You ask, remembering he had said that she was way older and he didn't see her much.
"She just started this week, actually." He chuckles. "She was at a different school, but then she transferred."
You hum, "She doesn't really look like you."
"Yeah, I know." He smiles. "Everybody says that, but we do have the same parents."
You're starting to like being around him. You know you shouldn't be saying that, but it's true. You can't help how often you smile at him, everything just feels so natural with him.
God, if Himari was in your brain, you knew she'd be cheering up and down about how she and her sister were right all along.
The game was almost over by the time you guys got back, you were happy to see that your team was winning. You sit next to your coach, not wanting to go back into the game to ruin their flow.
You cheered from the sidelines as Emi lands the last hit and wins the game. You're smiling hard and Kuroo can't take his eyes off you. He adores how happy you are that your team won.
He's not even upset that his team lost, no, he's not even paying any attention to them.
"Uh hello? Your team is right here." Yaku waves his arms in front of the captain. Kuroo smiles, he smiles so hard his face hurts, Yaku rolls his eyes and calls him a lost cause.
Kuroo decides to man up, he waits until your friends have left your side, and the second they do, his long legs strut towards you quickly.
"I believe I won." You smile as you see him coming up to you.
His heart feels like it's about to pound out of his chest, "Technically, neither of us were playing towards the end." He chuckles. "Are you doing anything tomorrow?" He fiddles with his shorts nervously. He's not sure where exactly he got the confidence to ask, but he's not complaining right now.
You hum, "It's Saturday...no, I don't think so." You say, "Why?" Your heart is racing and you're not even sure why.
"Would you wanna do homework at the library?" He asks, now he's thinking that maybe you don't have homework and he panics, "O-or if you don't have homework, that's—uh, that's fine, you don't have to—"
You find his nervousness cute and interrupt him, "I'd love to." You smile and he feels his entire body almost explode with excitement.
"Great—uh, yeah, I'm looking forward to it." He mentally tells himself to calm down, "Here, put your number in so I can text you the address." He thinks he's so smooth by finally asking to hangout and get your number. He's going to brag to Yaku so hard now if you agree.
"Sure." You agree and he hands you his phone, your nervous fingers type out your number, you feel like you're moving in slow motion. "There, text me so I can save your number ."
He nods quickly and types, 'Hi :)', you chuckle as you see his text pop up. You save his contact info, "Thanks." You smile.
"I should be thanking you." Kuroo laughs, "I'll see you tomorrow!" He says and runs back to his team before he says anything stupid. You shake your head lightly and try to hide your smile. 'I'm in trouble.' You say to yourself mentally.

After a grueling week, your tryouts officially ended. There was already an idea of what the lineup would be looking like, but your coach wanted to have a meeting about it.
Which is why you're at school on your only days off from both practice and your studies. Normally, meetings weren't every week, but it was a new season so they'd be more frequent for the first couple of weeks.
Your team had been too busy with tryouts to have a practice match with the boys', but it'd be happening this upcoming week and you were so excited.
"Good morning." You say walking into the gym, Kuroo and coach Nekomata were both seated—well Kuroo was on the floor, lying on his stomach.
"Good morning." Kuroo smiled, then began writing on his piece of paper on the floor.
"Where's Mori at?" You look around confusingly, trying to spot her light brown hair, pulled back into a loose pony tail.
"Her office, I think." Kuroo answers.
"I thought she said the bathroom?" Coach Nekomata furrows his brows and in response Kuroo shrugs. You sit down next to him and eye his paper, he's drawing up some lineups.
You frown at the absence of your coach. She made you get up early when you should be sleeping in like the rest of your teammates. The worst part is she didn't bribe you this time so you had nothing to look forward to.
Kuroo finishes and hands his paper to his coach, he examines it and held onto it for a minute or two. He kicks his feet, waiting for feedback. You laugh at him silently, in your head. He's kinda cute.
"What do you think about this, Y/n?" Coach Nekomata hands you the paper, it's slightly crumpled, you're starting to think that all of Kuroo's papers are.
You take it from his hands and look at the rotations, "I think a 5-1 is a good choice, especially if your second setter is clearly outplayed by Kenma." You follow the rotations more, seeing which players are getting switched.
"You guys also run a 5-1 too, right?" Kuroo bites the inside of his cheek, not wanting to sound like a creep for knowing.
"Yeah," you chuckle, "I think it looks great. You have a good use of substitutions." You smile and hand back the paper to him. His hand brushes yours for a millisecond as he grabs it.
"This is the lineup we'll beat your team with." He smirks.
"Oh yeah? Confident, I like it." You say,the door to the gym opens and all of your heads turn. "And where were you? We agreed on 9:30 am sharp. You're late." You lecture.
"Oh please, I don't want to hear it." She laughs. "I was here before you, I just had to get some things from my office." She shuffles some things around in her backpack, then pulls out a blank piece of paper, like Kuroo's, just not crumpled. "Start thinking of some lineups." She says.
You frown, "Can I borrow that?" You point to Kuroo's pencil and he immediately nods and slides it to you. "Thank you."
"I think we got this one in the bag." Kuroo now flips from his stomach to his back and faces the gym ceiling.
"Uh-huh, sure." You draw out the last word. "How many tournaments have you won?"
He clicks his tongue, "We've won."
"Recently?" You raise an eyebrow, staring into his eyes.
He can feel his cheeks begin to heat up, he turns away before you could see, "Yeah well, you lost some valuable players last season."
"We have good first-years." You say, "I heard one of your first-years can't receive well, isn't that what your team's known for?"
The two coaches watch you two banter back and forth, Mori reminding Kuroo that you had to finish the rotations still and to stop distracting you. The meeting was pretty short, there wasn't a lot to cover besides lineups.
"You're staying?" You point between the two coaches, Kuroo and you helped clean up and were ready to leave.
"We've got a board meeting in a little." Coach Nekomata says and you nod, bidding them goodbye for the day as you walk out with Kuroo.
You're not surprised to see that it's lightly raining, since it had been all week, and yet you still didn't bring an umbrella. "You have an umbrella?"
"Of course I do." He chuckles, opening it and luckily it was big enough for the two of you to be under. "Have you eaten already?"
You shook your head, "I was starving that whole time," you laugh, "Have you?"
He shook his head, "There's this convenience store by my house, you wanna go get something?" He strengthens his grip on the umbrella.
"Yeah." You smile.
He lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding and turns his head so he can smile like a schoolgirl, he quickly recomposes himself and look forward again.
You thought Kuroo was nice, you've never really gotten to know him, but you were semi-close to Kai, one of his teammates, only because he was in your class.
"How'd you feel about the first week of classes?" You ask after a moment of silence.
"Pretty easy, I'm enjoying it while it lasts." He says and you chuckle.
"Yeah, it gets rough around June and July. We usually use the first hour of practice to study before actually playing." You say.
"So you guys practice less?" Kuroo is intrigued by this, he had never heard of a team doing anything like it.
"No, we extend it to end an hour later, coach just wants to make sure we at least do something productive before practice." You clarify.
He hums, "I'm sure you have no issue passing exams." He compliments.
You smile, "Not really, I study frequently. I could say the same about you." You slightly nudge him.
He shrugs and rolls his eyes playfully, "Aw stop it, I just pay attention, that's all."
"Consider that the last time I compliment you." You laugh.
"I'm kidding! I appreciate it, thanks." He laughs along with you. "This is it." He says, looking both ways before crossing the street to the convenience store. The second you spot food, your stomach began to grumble.
You found yourself in a different aisle than Kuroo, trying to choose from the two onigiri in your hand. You decided to take both, you're extremely hungry. Kuroo came up next to you in line, you noticed he had a sandwich and a drink, an iced tea you think.
It was your turn next in line, you kindly greeted the man at the register and placed your items on the counter. What you didn't expect was to see Kuroo's items placed next to yours, you turn confusingly, but he had already given the man his card.
"You didn't have to—"
"Nonsense. I'm the one who asked you to come." He smiles widely, then quickly takes his card back and puts it inside of his wallet. "Cmon, let's eat." He grabs the bag full of your shared items.
"Thank you." You sincerely say, feeling a little bad about him paying, not that it was expensive, but still.
"Of course." The rain had stopped, the sun began to come out of the gray clouds. He leads you to one of the benches at a nearby park, it had an umbrella so it wasn't too soaked.
"God, I'm starving." He says, handing you your items.
You agree with him and a comfortable silence falls between you two as you're both distracted with eating. You eye the area around you, it was unfamiliar, but it wasn't too far from your home.
You watch an owner play with her dog, repeatedly throwing the ball for the dog to run and get it, it made you smile. You crumble up the wrapper the onigiri was in and place it on the table.
"You know," You begin, Kuroo was also watching the dog, but now his eyes were looking into yours, "I've lived here for a while now and I've never been to this park before."
Kuroo chuckles, "It's nice, right?" And you nod. "Kenma and I would play here all the time."
"That sounds nice." You smile and begin watching the dog again, Kuroo can't help but continue to stare at you.
"He didn't like it very much, his arms would hurt after playing volleyball for a long time." Kuroo recalls the memory.
"I believe that. I'm surprised he's still playing." You honestly say.
"I think he likes it. In his own way." He shrugs. "You and Himari are close, too."
You smile, thinking of your best friend, "Yeah, we grew up next to each other. It was nice having someone in the same grade, it felt like I wasn't going through anything alone."
"I get that, she's like a sister to you." He says and you immediately agree. Both of your families had been close since the day they moved in. "You don't have siblings don't you?"
"No, only child." You shrug.
"I have an older sister." He says.
"Really?" You're surprised, you would've thought he was an only child.
"Yeah, she's way older, so I don't see her very often." As he finishes his sentence, the sun quickly goes away and the sounds of thunder hit your ears. "Oh shit." Kuroo says.
"I think it's gonna rain again." You say, "I better get going."
"I hope it's not too long of a walk." Kuroo says, worried that you're going to get soaked.
"No, don't worry it's not." You smile, "I'll see you later. Thank you again for paying!" You say as you leave, speed walking towards your house.
Kuroo watches you get further and further away, his heart was pounding from the moment you walked into the gym. A small smile remains on his face as he walks back home.

Despite waking up on time, you were frantically running around your house trying to find your left knee pad. You thought you had everything packed, but right as you were going to meet up with Himari you decided to check your bag again.
"Mom!" You yell, moving the pillows on the couch to see if your missing knee pad was there. It was not.
"I have no idea where it could be, sweetheart." She says apologetically, "Check the car?" She suggests.
You had to leave in 5 minutes if you wanted to be on time. Your coach would kill you if she found out her captain was late on the first day.
"Good morning my second mom!" Himari walks into your house, greeting your mother with a hug.
"Hey sweetie." She returns the hug. Himari looks at your disheveled self, running around like a maniac.
"What's wrong with her?" Himari chuckles.
"She can't find her left knee pad." Your mother sighs, handing Himari her lunch that she had made her. Your mother made lunches for the both of you, this week was her turn to make them.
Himari raises her eyebrows and quickly unzips her volleyball bag, "I thought it was weird I had an extra knee pad." She says and calls your name, holding the missing knee pad.
"Oh thank god." You take it from her and shove it in your bag, "Where was it?"
"My bag." Himari laughs, waving to your mother as you both walk out the door.
You roll your eyes, "You stole it."
"You left it." She giggles.
You both made it just in time for class, Himari sat in the desk next to you. Class was going relatively fast, it was the first day, so it was the easiest.
Himari watched the clock tick, her stomach was rumbling, begging for some food. You watch her clutch her stomach and put her head down.
The second the bell rang, she grabbed her lunch and pulled you along with her to class 5.
"Mori!" Himari smiles widely, your coach, who was also a teacher, lifted her head up from the papers she was examining and raised an eyebrow.
"Himari, you cannot call me that." Your coach says.
"You're my sister, I can call you whatever I want." Himari crosses her arms.
"Yeah, well not at work. Just for that you're doing extra cardio today." Mori glares at her sister.
You chuckle and take a seat, eating your lunch watching them argue about every little thing. You excuse yourself to the bathroom and to get some water.
"Hey, L/n!" You hear your name being called, you turn and see Kuroo.
"Oh hey, please just call me Y/n, I like it better." You smile. "What's up, Kuroo?"
"I didn't know your coach taught here." He says following you.
"Yeah," You chuckle, "Sometimes she makes me help her grade."
"Well, if you ever grade my stuff you'll only see perfect marks." He brags.
"Uh-huh, sure."
"Oh, but what I really got your attention for was our team's schedule." He pulls out a paper and hands it to you, it's a little crumpled from being in his bag. "I heard from Kai that you like to have your own."
"Thank you, we haven't gotten our schedule yet, but I'll be sure to pass it on to you when I do." You say, folding the paper so it doesn't get any more ruined.
"Sounds good." He puts his hand in his pockets and stands a little awkwardly, not sure how to continue the conversation.
You chuckle, "I'll see you later, I have to finish my lunch." With that he watches your figure walk towards his class, assuming you eat lunch with your coach.
He mentally groans at himself and begins to walk back to where his friends are at.
"She made the practice plan." You notice Himari's face down her desk, her voice was muffled.
"It can't be worse than last years," you chuckle, remembering how a few of the girls had thrown up. Mori handed you her iPad to show what was on schedule and you gulp, "are you trying to kill us?!"
"My goal is to get rid of the unserious players day one." She takes her iPad back.
"Yeah, you'll probably get rid of a few of your starters too." You are trying to mentally prepare for after school.
"We'll do more than just throw up." Himari rubs her temples.
Mori clicks her tongue, "It won't be as bad as you think. Now get to class before you're late." You two groan and leave the classroom, going back to your own.
You were assigned a worksheet for the remainder of class, Himari takes your paper and compares it to her own, unsure of where her mistake could be.
You shook your head and stared out the window, the day was going by fast and soon you'll be begging for oxygen at practice.
The last bell of the day rang and students were antsy to leave, you took your time packing your things. Nervousness and excitement pooled your stomach.
"Cmon let's go, we have to open the club room." Himari stands up.
"I'm going, I'm going." You stand up as well and pull your bag over one shoulder.
You continued your small talk, up until you reached the door. The clouds were starting to turn grey, making you frown.
"We might get rained on." Himari notes and walks into the club room.
"At least it'll cool us off while we run." You shrug, taking off your school uniform and changing into your volleyball gear.
The door whips open, making you clutch your shirt to your chest, "LETS GO BABY! First day of the season." Naomi, one of your teammates yell.
"Close the fucking door! We're shirtless." Himari yells back.
"It was just me." Naomi sighs, "Captain." She nods to you and you wave the two off as you go into the gym.
The boys club room was to the right of yours, Kuroo had just so happened to get out the same time you did. "Beautiful day for running, right?"
You turn and see the boys captain and you chuckle, "So you've heard."
"Misaki mentioned it quite loudly." He laughs, "Have you had a chance to look through your first-year applicants?" He says.
"A few of them. We have a huge turnout. I told you we would." You sigh. "And you?"
He nods, "4 of them. That's all we got."
You hum, "I'm wishing you guys the best, we'd love to be able to go to nationals together."
"We're trying," he chuckled, "We'll definitely be there. I promise." He says to you. "See 'ya." And he walks into his respected gym.
You shake your head, you had teased the captains years prior about going to nationals. They have two chances, one near the start of the year, and the other in the spring. That is if the third-years stay.
During your summer break you and the other third-years hung out and talked about whether staying after inter high was a good idea or not. You stood firmly on staying, you wanted to take the team to nations twice. Of course the others followed after you.
The smell of a freshly waxed gym floods your nose, you know it'll be the worst when diving, but you've prepared yourself for the bruises and burns.
"Don't bother putting your volleyball shoes, we'll be going outside shortly." Your coach says as you began to take off your other shoes.
You fake cry and begin stretching, making her chuckle evilly.
After a gruesome two and a half hours, you made it through without puking. You can't say the same for some of the other girls, though.
You're hunched over a ball cart, catching your breath. You eye a number of girls going up to coach Mori, most likely to tell her that they won't be returning.
You think she actually did it, she really got rid of all but 3 first-years.
"I need fluids." Keiko, one of the middle blockers tells you. "I lost all of them during our second session outside."
You scrunch your nose at the thought of her puking, "There's Gatorade in the club room."
"Gather 'round! I just have a few things to say before we tear down the nets," Your coach starts, "Great first day, tomorrow will be similar, please let me know if you won't be coming back." You drown out her voice as she talks about things you've heard the past 2 years.
You're starving. Your stomach tightens uncomfortably, you hope your mother or father made something good. You'll also be taking a Gatorade from the club room.
"Captain?" You coach catches you off guard, "Is there anything you'd like to add before we leave?"
"Thank you all for coming, don't be discouraged by today, it all comes with practice. Please continue to support us! Rest up and be ready for tomorrow. " You end and the room erupts in applause.
You let the starter second-years take the nets down while you converse with your coach for tomorrow.
"I finished up making the schedule, I already sent coach Nekomata a copy, but I know you like to have one as well." She opens her clipboard and hands you a paper.
"Do you happen to have another one?" You say, eyes scanning the schedule.
"Yeah, here." She hands you another, "Why?"
"I wanted to give it to the boys' captain." You say, not paying much mind to it.
"The boy, huh." She smirks.
"What? I just met him, you're delusional." You laugh.
"Don't let boys distract you. Do you remember what happened to Mia?" You recall the memory two years ago, she had gotten dumped the day before nationals. It was horrible for her, she had to be benched halfway through because of her errors.
You shiver at the thought, "I promise nothings going to happen."
Your coach hums, you see most of the girls have already left or gone to the club room. "I'll see you tomorrow." You say.
You can feel some soreness in your legs walking up the stairs to the club room. You throw your jacket and sweats on. 'The schedule.' You remind yourself and make your way over to the boys' clubroom.
"What're you doing?" Himari questions.
"I need to give this to the captain." You say, "Also we're stopping at the store, I need food immediately." She laughs and says she does too.
You knock on the door, hearing some of the chatter die down, a short blonde answers. "What's up?"
"Is Kuroo in there? I have something for him." You say.
"I think he's still in the gym, sorry."
"You're good, thanks." You finish and drag Himari to the gym again.
The blonde was right, Kuroo was sitting on the floor talking to his coach, their heads turn to see who had just walked in.
"Oh—hey," Kuroo gets up and walks over to the two of you. "Is everything alright?"
"Yeah, I just got our schedule," You hand it over to him.
"Thank you." He gives a wide smile, "Hey Coach, do you need one of these?"
"I got it emailed, thank you son. Y/n, Himari." He nods to you guys. "How was the first day?"
"So much running." Himari stares off into nothing remembering how she felt during it.
"And conditioning. But I think coach Mori did it. She got rid of all the unserious players day one." You say.
"I helped her make that plan." Nekomata chuckles.
"I hope our suffering was worth it." Himari sticks her nose in the air. Making the boys laugh.
"Good luck tomorrow." Kuroo waves, when you're out of eyesight he clutches the paper to his chest. He didn't necessarily need the schedule, but you thought of him and that's all he could ask for.

You lied. You did not have a cookie recipe you wanted to try. So why were you doing all this? For him to come over and spend more time with you?
'We're just friends.' You keep repeating to yourself, almost trying to convince your mind (and heart). You woke up a little earlier, due to your parents farewell. It felt nice to be home alone for a bit.
You laid back in bed, going on TikTok to try and find an interesting cookie recipe. Of course, it didn't take long. There were many recipes being shared online and you found one that seemed easy enough. It did require you to make a quick trip to the grocery store.
The thought of him being in your house, and maybe even your room suddenly made you a little anxious. You quickly ran around and frantically tidied up every single crevice of your house, wanting it perfect.
The knock on your front door made you come to a halt, you unknowingly fix your hair and open the door. "Hey, come in." You smile and move to the side so he could enter.
He gives you a warm smile as he came in and let his eyes wander, "Hey. Thanks for inviting me." He took his shoes off.
"Yeah, I figured baking cookies alone would be boring." You smile at him and lead him to the kitchen.
He chuckles, "I don't bake often, so don't make fun of me if I suck." He likes the way your house is decorated, there were family photos scattered and he wished he could get up close to see a younger version of you.
"It's easy. I'll be here so my house won't burn down." You joke and he shakes his head. You liked seeing him outside of his school uniform and volleyball clothes. It felt like this sight of him is for your eyes only.
"Okay, I'm not that bad." He laughs and watches you take out some bowls. "Can I—uh get some things? I feel bad just standing here."
"You can get the wet ingredients." You tell him what he needs to find in the fridge and he puts them on the counter. He gets to mixing and is doing a good job, he doesn't spill or over measure anything.
You did the dry ingredients and then poured them both into a bigger bowl and let the mixer do its job. "Isn't this kinda of cheating?" He chuckles, watching the mixer work through the dough.
"No." You laugh, "It just makes it easier."
"I don't know, I feel like I'd be old fashioned and mix without it." His eyes meet yours and he feels the all-too-familiar thump against his chest.
"But it gives me time to preheat the oven and prepare the pans." You counter, smiling softly as he looks at your features.
"I guess so. You got me." Kuroo rests his elbows on the counter and looks into the mixer. "Smells good." He notes.
"I can't wait to eat them." You hum and agree. "It's taking everything in me to not eat the cookie dough."
"Well, let's try it together." He grins and grabs two small spoons, scooping a pea sized amount for you. His tongue savors the flavor of the cookie dough, he knows it's bad for you and the two of you could potentially get sick, but it's worth seeing your pleased face.
"These might be my best cookies yet." You chuckle, the oven was preheated. It beeped to let you know. "I'll show you how to get the pans ready and how much to scoop." You move around the kitchen with ease.
He listens intently, matching your actions. He's starting to get the hang of it and scoops the perfect size for each ball. "This is actually very therapeutic." He chuckles, a lopsided grin on his face. The soft music playing in the background really topped it all off.
You agree with him and open the oven carefully, making sure you weren't going to get burned while putting the trays in. "Now it's time for the boring part. Dishes." You sigh and shut the oven, putting a timer to check on them.
"I've got them." Kuroo says, already turning the faucet on.
"No arguments here." You raised your hands up and he laughs, you sit on the counter chair in front of him. Your mind goes to volleyball, it's second nature to think about.
Kuroo notices you've gone quiet, but decided not to ask about it. He washed the dishes with ease, stealing glances at you occasionally. "Do you think Daishou's team is better than us?" He speaks up after a few minutes.
You give him a confused look, "Who's Daishou?"
"Right," He chuckles, forgetting you're not that familiar with the boys' names on other teams. "He plays for Nohebi academy? He kinda looks like a snake."
You let out a laugh, "How can someone look like a snake?"
"He just does." He chuckles with you.
"Oh, wait, are they the team with green and yellow?" You ask, "Yeah—their ace, he kinda has curly hair."
Kuroo shook his head, "You're thinking about Itachiyama." He flashed a smile, "They're the other green and yellow team. Their jerseys are more lame."
"Oh, yeah. I think I know who you're talking about." You hum and think hard. "Their girls' team never makes it past the first round."
He nods slowly, "Well, their boys' team is annoyingly good."
"Not as good at you guys." You smile.
"I mean, we've been beat by them the last few years." He rubs his neck and sighs. "I think I'm just worried."
"I've seen how you guys play, you're really tough. I'm sure beating a snake boy and his team won't be an issue." You say to him.
"I really hope so." He sighs, "I just want to play Karasuno at nationals."
"That's all? You don't want to win?" You chuckle.
"I mean, obviously, but I want to beat them." He says determined.
You hum, liking this competitive side of him. "I'll be there to cheer you on." You say, but then quickly realize how that sounded, "You—uh, you know, like me and the girls—we'll cheer you on, and of course your teammates!"
He smiles big at your words, "Thank you, it means more than you know." He says, and it's true. If you're out there cheering him on, that's more than enough motivation for him.
"You guys will do great." You smile, finally calming back down. "If not this June, there's always January."
He lets out a soft sigh, "Yeah...that does make me feel a little better." The oven dings, just in time as the conversation dwindled down. "I've got them." Kuroo says and puts on the oven mitts.
"Thanks." You smile and put out a cool down rack for the two batches. The smell filled your home, making your stomach grumble.
"I don't know if I have the self control in me to not eat them right now." He says seriously as he took out the second pan.
"No," You chuckle, "C'mon, you're supposed to be the strong one and tell me we have to wait for them to cool down."
He laughs loudly, "We're both the same, huh?" And you give him a sheepish look, he shook his head and led you out of the kitchen so the two of you wouldn't be tempted to eat them piping hot. "We need to distract ourselves for at least 10 minutes."
You hum excitedly, "Oh! I have just the thing." You say and this time you're leading him upstairs, towards your room. You're so glad you decided to clean your room beforehand.
He follows you upstairs, his eyes taking in everything as he passes by. When he steps into your room, he can't stop a goofy grin forming on his face. He looks around and he thinks he's silently getting to know you even more by just your decorations.
As you turn around, you notice his eyes absorbing the details of your room and softly smile, 'He looks so cute.' You say to yourself, you bring his attention back to you as you're holding something up.
"Is that paint?" He chuckles and asks, taking the box from you.
You nod excitedly, "I got it as a gift a long time ago, but I've never gotten around to paint it." He looks at the ceramic piece, it was a book vase with words on it and flowers.
"I'm not sure you want me painting." He says grinning, "I'm not a very good artist."
You shake your head, "C'mon, it'll be fun! I'll show you how to make it look good."
That was all the convincing he needed, "Alright, I'm in." He smiles widely and follows you back downstairs. He's sitting at the coffee table in the living room, you gave him the controller for the tv and he's scrolling through different movies.
You came back with the supplies needed for watercoloring and sat next to him. He let you do the unboxing, he didn't trust himself with doing it because with you being so close he thinks he'll accidentally rip open the box and drop the ceramic.
He finishes picking the movie. Satisfied with his choice, thinking it'll impress you. He listens intently just like before when you give him instructions on how to paint the ceramic.
"If I do bad, what will you do with it?" He chuckles as he nervously dips his brush in the water.
"But what if you do good?" You challenge, "Either way, they're going on my bookshelf."
He feels his heart do leaps and can't stop a light blush dusting his cheeks, "I noticed you have quite the collection on books. You like reading?"
You hum and begin painting, "Yeah, I do. Some of its manga, though." You say.
"That still counts." He shrugs, "I don't read, like ever."
"It's fun." You smile at him, "I used to read a lot more a couple years ago, now I just try to when I get the chance."
"Volleyball and school is a lot." He agrees.
"What do you like to do on your free time?" You ask curiously. "Besides play volleyball."
He chuckles, "I play video games with friends." He pauses his painting for a second to think. "I also like working out and fixing up cars with my dad."
"Oh really? You like car guy stuff?" You chuckle.
He hums, "I'm not, like, crazy about it, but yeah. It's fun to do, and gives me time to spend with my dad."
"That's cool." You smile, "What about your mom? What do you like to do with her?"
He's quiet for a moment before answering, "She's not really in the picture." As the words leave his mouth, he's worried it'll create an awkward atmosphere between the two of you.
"Oh, I'm so sorry for bringing it up." You freeze your hands in mid-action.
He waves you off, he knows he had nothing to worry about, you were great girl. "It's okay, she and my dad divorced when we moved next door to Kenma." He explains.
You're hesitant with your next question, but ask anyway, "Do you...miss her sometimes?"
He stops painting completely and looks at you, "Not really. I try not to, why waste sadness on her, you know? She made her decision." He can feel himself get annoyed just thinking about his absent mother.
"That's understandable." You nod, "I'm really sorry."
"It's okay." He smiles, he feels his annoyance dwindle down and all he's doing is looking at you and your pretty self.
"I know I can't understand fully how that feels, but I did grow up with Himari and her dad sounds just like your mom." You say, "That kind of hurt—I've seen it, I helped Himari through it." You give him a comforting smile.
"Thank you." He returns one back to you, "My dad and I are good. Way better than when she was there, to be honest." He chuckles and continues to paint. The last person he's opened up to about that was Kenma, and even then, he struggled to feel fully comfortable to tell him. That's just not the case with you, he physically has to stop himself from rambling on.
You nod and continue painting as well, "So, tell me more about these cars you fix up with your dad?"
His eyes glimmer as he thinks about it, you can tell he enjoys talking about it. He doesn't get to do it much because nobody else on the team is really interested, "Right now, we're fixing up my car for when I turn 18."
"Oh really? That's exciting." You smile.
He hums happily, "It's vintage and real nice, it's coming along great."
"I'd love to see it when it's finished." You chuckle.
"We've been working on it for a year, we try to every weekend." He says.
"Oh, does that mean you didn't get to this weekend? I'm sorry—" You begin to say and he interrupts you.
"Don't sweat it," He smiles, "I wanted to spend this time with you." He says and his face immediately gets hot, he can't even hide it.
"You sure?" You ask and he's thanking whoever is above because you're busy painting your bookvase, and not his embarrassed face.
"Yeah, I'm sure." He says, "Besides, he was tired from work, anyways.”
"That makes me feel a lot better." You chuckle. "Oh, cookies should be done. I'll be back." You say and quickly stand up.
"Need any help?" He asks.
"It's okay! I'll be back in a sec." You say from the kitchen and he nods. In a few minuets, you're back with a large plate and some milk.
He wipes his hands and he grabs one, his self control crumbling at the sight and smell of the cookies. He takes a bite and lets out a satisfied hum. "It's delicious." He says and eats it in two bites.
"Yeah, these are definitely my best." You say and agree as you let the cookie savor in your mouth.
"Can I take a few of these back home?" He chuckles as he finishes with his third cookie.
"Sure, but I gotta save at least two for Himari. She'll kill me if I don't." You say and he sets aside two, knowing if they were on the plate, he'd eat them in seconds.
The two of you talked, painted, and ate cookies for a few hours. Everything felt so natural with him, you're having so much fun.
It was starting to get late and he needed to get back home to eat dinner with his dad. "Thank you, again, for inviting me over." He says, his hands in his pocket as he stands in front of your door.
"Of course," You smile, "I had a lot of fun."
"I did, too." He mirrors your smile, his heart flutters in his chest and his knees feel like they're going to give out. "See you at school?"
You nod and hand him a small bag of cookies, "Yeah, I'll see you. Goodnight, Tetsurou.
"Goodnight, Y/n. Sleep well, yeah?" He says behind him and catches a glimpse of your cute nod and smile.
You don't think you can convince yourself anymore that you're not falling for him. You practically melt into a puddle as you shut the door behind you and locked it up for the night. Himari will have a field day with this.
