The 1988 #YamahaofYesterday YZR500 0W98 was more than just a contender. Two-stroke, liquid-cooled, V4 engines powered Yamaha’s 500cc GP bikes for nearly 20 years, and the 1988 YZR500 0W98 was one of the most successful 500cc GP bikes of them all. Because of the new crankcase reed-valve induction system featured on the 0W98, the angle of the “Vee” was increased from 60° to 70°. The exhaust layout was also changed, with the pipes from the front two cylinders crossing under the engine and emerging on the right. An asymmetrical “banana" swingarm with an arch on the right side accommodated the pipe layout. Eddie Lawson notched seven race wins and the 500cc World Championship on the bike, while Wayne Rainey and Kevin Magee each won a race on the 0W98.
