Jake Hsu plays the female lead Tiffany Hsu's twin baby brother in "Shards of Her". Because Tiffany Hsu is of mixed race, it wasn't easy to find someone to play her twin brother. Jake Hsu got the role based on a pretty selfie, but he immediately was very worried: "At that time I was doing my best to whiten my skin, because she is really too beautiful."

Jake Hsu says, laughing, that because his character doesn't have too many lines, he would just listen to her [speak] most of the time. "There were a few times I would be distracted because of her beauty. When I watched her act, I would think 'Wow, so beautiful.' But  these sentiments would also help my character's inner thoughts of 'I want to protect my sister. I'm so angry that such a beautiful sister is violated.' "

His manager revealed that it was a selfie that caused Jake Hsu to be successfully cast as Tiffany Hsu's younger brother. Filming work was suspended due to the pandemic at that time. His manager urged him to interact with fans on social media. Since he didn't know what to post, and he had happened to be mountain hiking with his mom, he took a selfie and asked his manager whether this photo was okay. His manager affirmed that it was great! Unexpectedly, this selfie also turned into an acting opportunity. Jake Hsu isn't of mixed race himself, but like Tiffany Hsu, he has penetrating facial features and a straight nose, making the casting done in a balanced and detailed way.

[CH-ENG Translation] Interview 2 "Shards Of Her" Shackled by a bout of depression, Jake Hsu relied on this action to cast the negative energy away. (25 November 2022 - part 2)

Picture: Jake Hsu cut his long hair immediately after filming for "Shards of Her" was done, so he could shake off his character's depressed mood.

Jake Hsu played Tiffany Hsu's twin brother in "Shards Of Her". Because his sister is sexually assaulted by a predatory teacher, he felt like he hadn't protected her well enough and sank into a manic depression. He deliberately left his hair long for the role, to build a sense of dejectedness. He admitted to feel the impact of the role while he was acting. After filming he often couldn't sleep. But he also thought: "This character probably isn't sleeping well either, because he has forced himself into a hopeless impasse; so the fact that I feel unwell because of insomnia, is actually helping me to get into this role."

Jake revealed that his own personality also often gets him into dead ends [=he will brood on insignificant problems], but he will force himself to cheer up and raise his spirits, in order to face people or his work, as well as let go of any melancholy and reveal a more optimistic side of him. After filming "Shards of Her", he immediately cut short the hair he'd been growing out for over a year, which was like cutting off 3000 strands of 'troubles'. "I immediately felt much more relaxed", he said. Moreover, throwing himself into a new role immediately, playing a cheerful high school student helped to not let him fall into further depression.

Jake also shared that the longest time he felt depressed was while filming "Q-Series - 1000 Walls in Dream". His character also suffered from manic depression, and his own living conditions weren't very good at that time. His character had a crew-cut, so he wasn't able to cut his hair to leave the character behind like he did after "Shards Of Her" was done filming. He fell into a long bout of depression himself. He said: "It's scary to recall that now."  At that time he read some information about depression saying that if you fall into it once, you can never get rid of it again. Now he can 'call on depression' at any time for role, and his mind got stronger, knowing how to overcome it.
