RAF and Italian Air Force sign agreement for cross-maintenance of fighters

The British Royal Air Force has signed a formal agreement with the Italian Air Force that paves the way for the service and maintenance of the Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35B Lightning aircraft of each.
The signing of the implementation agreement follows the Declaration of Intent "Long History, Long Future: Tornado to Tempest" signed at RAF Marham last May. Agrees on the financial, legal and airworthiness principles for mutual maintenance and cross-service on common platforms, aircraft and weapon systems.
Once established, RAF engineers will be able to perform limited cross-maintenance services and activities on Italian Air Force aircraft, and vice versa, during exercises and operational Air Policing around the world.
The measure is part of broader NATO Employment in Agile Combat initiatives to improve the mutual operational advantage of nations by operating better together.
The agreement was signed at Amendola Air Base on behalf of the RAF by the RAF Support Director, Deputy Air Marshal Shaun Harris, and for the Italian Air Force by Generale Michele Oballa, Logistics Command of the Italian Air Force.
The ability to interoperate on the ground, providing engineering support to NATO partners, is increasing the agility and speed of response of combat air forces. This important agreement between the RAF and the Italian Air Force will strengthen the interoperability of the Typhoon and F-35 and lay the foundations for the cross-service of the Global Air Combat Program (GCAP).
In the next 12 months, the RAF and the Italian Air Force will jointly develop, exercise and validate the technical and administrative processes and procedures to achieve the full operational capacity of Typhoon and F-35 by 2025.
