your muscles are fundamentally just specialized bits of tissue that contract in response to electrical stimulus. this stimulus is intended to come from your own nervous system, but as Galvani showed by sticking electrical prods in dissected frog legs to make them twitch, other electricity can work just fine. if you're unlucky/dumb enough to grab a positive lead from a circuit in one hand and a negative lead in your other (thereby completing the circuit with your body), two things will happen immediately:
the muscles in both of your hands will all simultaneously contract much harder than you could ever possibly close them on your own, hard enough to injure them. this means that you will maintain a death grip onto whatever you grabbed that got you into this situation in the first place, regardless of how hard you struggle to let go
the electricity will follow the path of least resistance by going up one arm, across your chest, and down the other arm. unfortunately, "across the chest" means that the current travels directly through your heart, which is also a muscle and will spasm/contract uncontrollably depending on the voltage
fortunately, this is only an issue for a specific range of voltages. too low, and nothing happens; too high, and the muscle contraction extends to your arms and pectorals, forcing you to to stick them straight ahead like a zombie and likely pushing yourself away from the shock in the process. unfortunately, this range includes 120V 60Hz AC, which is the standard for outlet power in the USA. if your skin is dry, it usually has enough resistance that grabbing bare wires won't immediately kill you, but water or even too much sweat can lower the resistance enough to make the current fatal.
