I feel like I’ve spent so much of my time trying to make relationships work with men who weren’t right for me that it feels a little weird to not have feelings for anyone right now. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic & wanted that “fairy tale” shit, but it’s kinda refreshing.

Leafs @ Coyotes - Game 38 - Dec.28.17
KEY NARRATIVES
Toronto Maple Leafs (22-14-1) vs Arizona Coyotes (9-25-5)
Twas the first game after Christmas and all through the rink, every creature was stirring, especially the Mouse...
Tonight the Leafs return to the ice in a to face the Arizona Coyotes, a matchup that always gets some attention. Even though the Coyotes lack a distinct rivalry with Toronto, or have any hope of facing the Leafs beyond their two regulation matchups a year, the Leafs owe the 'Yotes for Auston Matthews. The Scottsdale native will have had lots of time to visit home over the Christmas break before heading out to Glendale to face the starving dog that is the Arizona Coyotes for the second time on his home turf.
In spite of playing more games than any other team in the league, the Coyotes have accumulated the fewest points. While some of the other rough start teams have bounced back into the fight (the Oilers) or at least managed to string a few wins together (the Hurricanes), the Coyotes have just four (4) regulation wins in the 39 games they've played this season.
Unfortunately, one of those was against Toronto, so best not get cocky.
So why are the Coyotes terrible? Obviously, I don't have the answer or I'd be getting paid lots of money and hanging out where there's no snow on the ground right now, but the underlying numbers are troubling. While the Arizona Coyotes do have the second worst PDO in the league right now, meaning they're "unlucky", what's concerning to me is that their low shooting percentage may not be set for much positive regression. They're sitting at 5v5 shooting percentage of 6.04. That's quite a bit lower than the league average of 7.68%, but the Coyotes are also dead last in expected Goals For percentage, and fourth to last in xGF per 60. What this means is that the Coyotes are taking lots of shots that have a low rate of going in the net, which you can see in the heat map below.
In the same way that we have some hope that the Leafs' shooting percentage may stay somewhat above average due to the fact that they take a bunch of shots from the slot and on the rebound, the Coyotes shooting percentage is likely to stay low if they keep shooting the way they are.
While arrogance should be avoided, the Leafs have ample reason to feel confident going into this matchup. Not only are the Christmas-Break-fresh Leafs coming out to face a Coyotes team that played the Avalanche last night, they're also coming off the return of Auston Matthews and a well-deserved win against the New York Rangers last Saturday. In that game, each of the super rookies picked up points, and Auston Matthews not only looked better than he had since before he was first out with injury and illness in November, but also took home both a goal and an assist. The Leafs have all the reason in the world to be flying high.
Lines have returned to standard formation, barring Nikita Zaitsev who is still out on injured reserve. Connor Carrick is still in the right defense spot next to Gardiner on the second pairing. While they didn't have a great game against New York, I still have high hopes for this pairing, both to spark Jake Gardiner and to keep Carrick out of the press-box when Zaitsev returns.
Leafs Lineup Below:
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Leivo-Kadri-Komarov
van Riemsdyk-Bozak-Marner
Martin-Moore-Brown
Rielly-Marincin
Gardiner-Carrick
Borgman-Polak
The Coyotes also have some absences to deal with. Steady, veteran defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson is out on IR with an upper-body injury and isn't expected back until January. They are also missing forward and known Garbage-Human Zac Rinaldo to a suspension after he sucker punched Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard the other night. While his scoring impact is hardly a factor, the Leafs can be thankful Rinaldo’s not in tonight, as they'll have to watch their backs that much less.

Highlights and Post will be up after the game.
