Jack-in-the-box, a closer look

I've been trying to put this into words for awhile, but Tumblr ate my earlier post I made with the quotes and scripts and everything. Here it is in summary, so I can rework it later:

Cas took a huge risk in SPN 14x22 Jack in the Box. He strategically dangled Jack-as-weapon to Heaven, with the express purpose of enticing them to find Jack. "With patience and molding, he can be salvaged."

It's fascinating that, myself included, that we tend to summarize Cas's actions with words like strategy and not manipulation. Manipulation is one of those loaded words. Like "hysterical." Like "irrational." (Even Chuck's manipulation gets to be called machinations, implying an engineering component.)

No doubt, it's awful that Jack was lured into a box, but it's also something horrific that Cas maneuvered Heaven to track Jack down in the first place, knowing that state of Heaven's power grid and intimately knowing the type of inhumanity Heaven might task him with.

So, it goes.

Jack's murder of civilians indirectly hurt Jack's moral fiber. The first strategy was risky, too, in that it indirectly led to deaths. It ultimately resulted in Jack committing war crimes and damaging Jack's moral integrity. (Conjecture: This potentially caused him to shutdown and dissociate from Mary's murder even more severely.)

Then, it was this torture of innocent civilians that led to the tipping point for second strategy, the box. This second strategy was risky and cruel; it hurt Jack's feelings and incited his anger. But it didn't lead to deaths or Jack committing acts of violence. It was a bargaining that preserved his life and the lives of others.

It was an impossible situation, but both sets of actions are the result of desperation gone awry.
