Étude du matin by Paul Gavarni, March 9, 1839.
Still in the 1830s, although these two young men are spiritually in the 1840s already with the long hair and questionable facial hair decisions. One smokes a trendy chibouk pipe and shows a great view of straps on his trousers.

2023 Reading Log, pt. 15
I am behind on my writeups: the last book here I read the week of Thanksgiving!
Tumblr media
71. The Body Fantastic by Frank Gonzalez-Crussi. This book made for a surprisingly relevant pivot from Cult of the Dead, as it starts with talking about how Christianity has made a long history from denying and denigrating the flesh. This book is a miscellany of odd medical trivia and historical beliefs about the human body, from wandering wombs to the curative power of saliva. As someone who’s read a lot of medical history books, this one didn’t stand out so much to me, but it would probably be a good starting point for someone looking to learn some of the odder highways and byways of how people have thought about bodies. The author’s sensibilities are philosophical, leaning mystical, and his personality shines through. This is particularly true in matters of food and drink—he feels disgust over eating competitions having gone hungry in his youth, for example.
Tumblr media
72. Eight Bears by Gloria Dickie. As the name suggests, this book covers all of the extant bear species, although more from a cultural and conservation perspective than evolution or ecology. The author travels around the world in an attempt to see all of the bears in the wild, or at least in local captivity (such as going to a panda preserve in China). I think the book’s strongest chapters are the ones in South Asia, where she sees how in India, humans and sloth bears are being pressed into conflict through land use, and the waning in visibility but still strong market in bear bile in Vietnam. I was also pretty surprised about the chapter closest to home—how the black bears in Yosemite National Park were outright fed by park management for decades as a tourist attraction before the realization that, wait, getting large strong omnivores used to associating humans with food is a bad decision.
Tumblr media
73. The Delusions of Crowds by William J. Bernstein. This is an odd one. It poses itself essentially as a sequel to Charles Mackay’s Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, a book about mass hysteria and fads from the 1840s. It narrows down Mackay’s wide scope to two major domains—economic bubbles and millenialist religion, and then progresses in a roughly chronological order. The problems are two fold. One, the narrative never really draws much linkage between these two types of “delusions of crowds”, leaving the book feeling disjointed. Second, the author assumes a lot about the reader’s background in economics (possibly because he’s an economist himself), so the explanations of the exact financial chicanery involved in the various bubbles are not always fully comprehensible. I wanted to like this book a lot more than I actually did.
Tumblr media
74. Spirit Beings in European Folklore 2 by Benjamin Adamah. The second of four volumes, this covers primarily north-central and north-east Europe. Germany, Finland and the Netherlands get the most attention. The monsters contained within include a lot of house and field spirits, as well as many variations of alps and other sleep paralysis monsters. Again, what monsters the author decides fall into his category of “spirit beings” and which ones don’t is somewhat arbitrary. Tatzelwurms and stollenwurms, for example, are listed, even when more traditional dragons are not. I also think that the author needs to be more careful with their word choice, and/or spend more time studying folklore as a whole. For example, the book talks about the spoukhoas, a ghostly hare from the Netherlands. It talks about the spoukhoas as being a “were-hare”, despite the only lycanthrope-like trait in the entry being its vulnerability to silver… which is not universal to werewolves, and only became inexorably linked to werewolves due to Hollywood. No references to being a person at all!
Tumblr media
75. Saurian: A Field Guide to Hell Creek by Tom Parker, Chris Mansa and RJ Palmer. This is an art book, tied into the Saurian video game in which you play as a dinosaur. As such, the book takes an in depth look at the habitat represented by the game, and discusses the flora and fauna of the late Maastrichian South Dakota. The book is, of course, gorgeous. Both in terms of the dinosaur reconstructions and the landscapes, this makes a wonderful coffee table book. This might sound like an odd complain for a coffee table book based on a video game, but I do wish it had a bibliography. The book talks a lot about specific diets and habitat preferences of the animals within, and I want to have some sort of a guide to sorting out what’s supported by evidence, and what’s creative license.

Hello there! Good to hear from you!!!
Apples- favorite fruit?
Pineapples and Strawberries!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comfort - who is your go-to comfort character?
Ooo, good question! For men, Prince Hal/Henry V from Shakespeare's Henriad plays, Samuel Castell from Jamestown, Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars, Jonathan Pine from The Night Manager, and Piranesi from Clarke's Piranesi! For women, I'd have to say right now it's Anne Elliott from Persuasion, Of course, Edith Cushing from Crimson Peak, Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones, Cinderella, Alice, and Belle from Disney's movies!
If I am not physically attracted to them, I have a softness and see a bit of myself in them or want to be more like them!
Tumblr media
Favorites - what’s your favorite show, movie, and book?
For shows, right now it's Cranford since it's about a community in the 1840s and the old ladies who are the ones running it but how they help their neighbors through acts of kindness and help when there's tragedy or adversity and help couples fall in love!
Tumblr media
For movies, Amelie and the 2005 Pride and Prejudice are both beautiful
Tumblr media
For books, I would say two favorites I read recently are Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and Nettle and Bone by Kingfisher!
For my choice...

What Does a Black Wedding Dress Mean?
Tumblr media
A black wedding dress means power, sophistication, and a way to express confidence and a strong sense of personal style. ♡ It also symbolizes mystery and elegance, perfect for adding a touch of drama to your wedding. ♡
Tumblr media
As white wedding dresses traditionally represent purity and innocence, you may think that black wedding dresses symbolize the opposite. Still, no, there is a lot of meaning behind a black dress. It also represents individuality and empowerment. Brides who want a bold, sensual, sophisticated, and high-class look prefer black wedding gowns over other colors.
Tumblr media
Is It Okay To Wear A Black Wedding Dress?
Yes, it is perfectly okay to wear a black wedding dress. In western cultures, more and more brides wear non-traditional wedding dresses that reflect their style and preferences.
Black wedding dresses are a stunning and sophisticated choice, especially for evening or winter weddings. They are an excellent option for brides who want a more unconventional or gothic-inspired look. Lots of unique wedding aesthetics call for a bit of black!
Ultimately, the most important thing is feeling comfortable and confident in your wedding dress, regardless of color.
Tumblr media
Where Do Black Wedding Dresses Come From?
Black wedding gowns have a fascinating history that dates back centuries. In Western culture, white wedding dresses became popular after Queen Victoria wore a white dress for her wedding in 1840. Before that, brides often wore colorful dresses, including black. They were trendy in the Victorian era, as mourning attire was usually black, and weddings were seen as a celebration of life and death.
The black wedding gown also has roots in gothic culture, where black is seen as a symbol of rebellion and individuality. In recent years, black wedding gowns have become popular among alternative brides who want to break away from tradition and express their unique style.
Tumblr media
Not only are black wedding dresses sleek and stylish, they're also very versatile and can easily be worn again and again long after you say "I do."
How can I accessorize my black wedding dress?
When it comes to choosing bridal accessories, let your personal style and wedding gown guide your decision. Minimalist brides may opt for delicate jewelry and monochromatic accessories while statement-making brides might be drawn to accessories in bold pops of color.
Can I wear a black wedding dress for my summer wedding?
Yes! Black is a highly versatile color and can work for all types of weddings. For a summer wedding, opt for a black wedding dress crafted from a light and airy fabric like cotton or linen and keep accessories simple and laid-back.
Tumblr media
Veil
Ask your bridal consultant if your black gown has a matching veil. If you're going custom, inquire with your designer if he or she can create a matching veil that incorporates black details or (dare we say) is entirely black! We also think a black birdcage veil is incredibly chic, dramatic, and slightly mysterious. If you're truly going nontraditional in all aspects, ditch the veil and opt for show-stopping jewelry. Gold and silver tones pop even more against the dark hue. Skip the necklace and go for chandelier drop-earrings for an elegant and elongating look. Or, slip on a stack of bracelets for another bold option. Long story short—the options are endless!

Bridal Gowns: A Reflection of Personal Style and Identity
Tumblr media
Bridal gowns are a significant symbol of love, commitment, and the beginning of a new chapter in life. Modern brides are using their choice to reflect their personal style and identity, making it a powerful expression of who they are. This evolution is evident in the selection process at the Best Bridal Boutique in Trivandrum, where brides are encouraged to choose gowns that resonate with their unique personality and preferences. This connection between bridal gowns, personal style, and identity has transformed the wedding industry, allowing brides to showcase their individuality on their special day.
Evolution of Bridal Gowns
Bridal gowns have a rich history dating back to ancient Roman, Athenian, Victorian, and 20th-century cultures. Roman brides wore brightly colored garments with yellow veils, symbolizing warmth and a torch. Victorian brides wore white gowns, symbolizing purity and innocence. Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding featured a white gown with a nipped waist, wide skirt, and ivory lace. Edwardian gowns featured looser styles from delicate fabrics. Bridal fashion has evolved over time, shifting from traditional to personal expression, reflecting brides’ individual style and personality. Modern brides have a wide range of options, from traditional white gowns to colorful and unconventional designs, allowing them to create a unique look.
Personal Style as a Statement
Brides today are using their gowns to make a personal statement by showcasing their individuality and breaking away from conventional norms. They want to look and feel like themselves on their wedding day. Here are some ways in which brides are using their bridal attire to express their personal style:
Unique Designs: Brides are opting for wedding dresses with stunning details and innovative designs that reflect their personal taste and style. They are moving away from traditional white gowns and exploring different colors, patterns, and textures.
Customization: Many brides are choosing to customize their wedding dresses to make them truly unique. They may add personalized embellishments, such as embroidery, beading, or lace, to showcase their individuality.
Mixing and Matching: Instead of wearing a traditional bridal gown, some brides are opting for separates or mix-and-match pieces. They may pair a skirt with a different top or choose a non-traditional jacket or cape to create a unique and personalized look.
Non-Traditional Colors: Brides are embracing non-traditional colors for their wedding dresses, such as blush, champagne, or even bold and vibrant hues. This allows them to express their personal style and break away from the traditional white dress
The Intersection of Bridal Fashion and Identity
The intersection of bridal fashion and identity encompasses various aspects, including cultural and familial identity, diversity and inclusivity, and navigating societal and familial expectations while staying true to oneself.
A.   Bridal gowns as a canvas for cultural and familial identity:
Bridal gowns express cultural heritage and traditions, reflecting customs and values. Brides can incorporate elements of their cultural identity, such as traditional fabrics, colors, or motifs, or family heirlooms like vintage wedding dresses, to create a sense of familial identity and history.
B.   Embracing diversity: inclusive options for all body types, genders, and orientations:
Bridal fashion has evolved to be more inclusive, offering diverse wedding dresses for different body types, genders, and orientations. Designers create gowns that make everyone feel confident and beautiful, while also catering to non-traditional gender identities and orientations with gender-neutral or non-binary options.
C.   Navigating societal and familial expectations while staying true to oneself:
Brides face societal and familial expectations when choosing wedding attire, which can be influenced by cultural norms, traditions, or personal preferences. Navigating these expectations while staying true to oneself can be challenging. Balancing honoring cultural traditions with expressing personal style and identity can be achieved through communication and open dialogue with family members. This compromise allows the bride to feel authentic and comfortable on her special day.
Bridal Gowns: More than Just Attire
Emotional attachment and lasting memories
For many brides, finding the perfect wedding dress can be an emotional process. The wedding dress can be perceived as a social object and a symbol, with a strong relation with identity. The dress represents the bride’s as well as her family’s status during the ceremony, and the wedding outfit selection involves consideration of multiple social roles. When brides find the ideal dress, they often react in ways that surprise themselves. Some brides feel like a princess when they put on the dress, and it takes their breath away how perfect it is. The dress can contribute to the acquisition of identities, such as wife-to-be and daughter-in-law, and the development of a sense of self.
Bridal gowns as a reflection of the times
Bridal gowns can also be a reflection of the times. For example, the 2023 Reem Acra collection features Art Deco inspired beadwork with a touch of sparkle and fantasy. The collection also includes gowns that are a blend of romance and modernity.
When choosing a wedding dress, brides can consider the general style they want and pin dresses that fit within that style. They can also make notes on what they like and dislike about each dress.
In conclusion, bridal gowns are more than just attire. They can create emotional attachment and lasting memories, and they can be a reflection of the times.
Bridal gowns are a captivating expression of one’s inner self, blending tradition and personal style. They celebrate diversity and individuality in bridal fashion, with classic, contemporary, from intricate designs to minimalist statements, the best wedding gowns in Trivandrum exemplify this very fusion. These gowns serve as a canvas for self-expression and reflect the unique essence of each bride. As time evolves, bridal gowns continue to influence personal style and identity, becoming an integral part of a bride’s cherished memories.

New puzzle!
Well sort of, I’ve known about this for a week I’m sure
Emma Armitage, that was probably her actual name - or, it’s the name she was married under, anyway, to become Emma Othick - she was born in the 1840s in Wakefield or Rothwell or Leeds, and in the 70s she was in prison for a fair while on various charges - the first was 3 months hard labour for stealing some bloke’s coat in ‘73 - anyway, for other convictions, she gave other names - Emily (’74, ‘indecent behaviour’, 2 weeks or 26s/6d, then stealing a shawl and bonnet, 5 months), and Amelia (’76, stealing a bottle of medicine and a single yard of fabric, one year imprisonment)
So, do I write Emma (aka Emily, Amelia), or, Emma - then have her criminal record in a separate document?
I rather think that’s the better choice, the second one
When she married, in ‘67, she didn’t give her father’s name and occupation - which is very odd, because I’ve even at times seen people make up their fathers wholesale to avoid the embarrassment of not knowing, or to zyuzh up his occupation to sound fancier than it actually was
I don’t know if either of the witnesses were hers over Bill’s, cs they were neither of them relatives - or at least they hadn’t the same surnames
Without any family I can confirm, and without a definite birthplace (or, growing up place, anyway), I can’t find out anything at all about her before the age of roughly-21, except her first name - she went by Emma for at least the latter 54 years of her life, if not the first 21 - and I know she was a sempstress/seamstress/dressmaker
So she might have to stay a mystery, really
Oh, look at that, I’ve found another name she went by - in the late 70s and 80s, she was also Emily Gill! Stealing a dress and shawl (18 months), another coat (5 years PS), indecent behaviour (1 month and license revoked) and stealing a woman’s vest (12 months hard labour)
I don’t know what PS stands for, or what on earth type of license was revoked, I spose it’s time to look in the papers for all her combinations of names
She also said she was a widow a bunch, despite her husband still being generally about (or, on censuses, anyway)

Understanding Baseball Caps
This iconic cap is known for its round crown and a stiff visor that projects in front. The anterior of the cap generally accommodate a design or a logo. Contrary to what you might think, this popular wholesale hat style has a history dating back to the 1840s. During the games, the team would wear caps on their heads to keep themselves protected from the sun, which became the first version of the baseball cap we all know and love.
The popularity of wholesale baseball caps is also justified by their somewhat tepid appeal. This gives you the flexibility to sport this headwear to match any kind of outfit - from casual to formal. It is comfortable enough to wear at any time of the year and for any occasion. Its compatibility with all body shapes, as well as the wide choice of styles out there to choose from, also explains the success of this accessory.
Another factor that boosted the popularity of the baseball cap is its low price. You see, people didn’t have to spend a whole lot of money to get their hands on a baseball cap. With a just a few couples of dollars, anyone can get a header that looks great, is comfortable to put on, and lasts for a long time.
A dad hat is a 5-panel baseball cap that comes with a slightly curved brim (pre-curved by the manufacturer). On the other hand, a snapback is a 6-panel baseball cap with a flat brim. Both are meant to be one-size-fits-all that come with an adjustment strap on the back. There are many different types of ball caps based on how they sit on your head and how they are made  These include fitted, snapback, strapback, trucker, 5-panel, and other styles.
Baseball hats are one of the most popular wholesale hat styles for customization. What makes them popular is the elevated foam front panel that gives you a large canvas for your designs. You can get them printed with your company logo to outfit your employees or as gifts for your customers.  Shop blank baseball hats for all your decoration needs from CapBargain today.

Print Mail Letters With Mail Merge
If you want to print mail letters, you can do it from the Mailings tab of Mail Merge. The Mailings tab contains basic options such as the name of the mailing, date, and number of recipients. You can also choose to print individual letters or a range of letters. The print function merges data from your contact records into the letters you create. It also adds an entry in your mailing log so you can keep track of which letters you send.
Tumblr media
Unlike a simple email, a print mail letter can have as many as 96 pages. The content can be incredibly detailed and professionally presented, and it can inspire action. Even more, it can be personalized to each individual recipient. A professional mail house will have the manpower and machinery to produce your letters, and they'll deliver them on time.
Before 1840, the cost of a printed letter depended on the address of the recipient and the number of sheets used. However, when Sir Rowland Hill reformed the postal system, he made it more affordable. He also proposed the use of penny postage and prepayment. He also introduced the use of adhesive postage stamps and official pre-printed envelopes.
Using a letter printing service can save you a lot of time and money. These services make the entire process a breeze. All you need to do is upload the letter you want to send to a service and choose the type of printing. Moreover, these services allow you to customize your letter with various options, such as background images or font style. You can also choose to send a certified mail letter with a stamp of your choice.

I'm looking up local-ish "Rendezvous" events—which is an odd choice of term for gatherings where people wear 18th century through early 19th century clothing, with an American frontier emphasis, and they usually involve things like flintlock long rifles, axe-throwing contests, and vendors who sell period clothing and supplies. Also called "primitive rendezvous" or "mountain man" events. The participants will camp out, and Indigenous American goods from the same time period are typical, like they're basically trying to replicate the aesthetics and technology of an American frontier outpost.
The general consensus is that clothing, equipment, etc. at a Rendezvous must be pre-1840 in design; which is very entertaining to me. One, the designation of the 1840s specifically as the beginning of Modernity, and secondly, the idea that you could roll up to one of these Daniel Boone reenactment-type events dressed like this:

Personality: Preston is a homicidal, bloodthirsty and ruthless doll possessed by the spirit of a deeply disturbed child named Preston. He feels no remorse or empathy for the people he kills, which also makes him a psychopath. His preferred method of killing is by cutting open his victim’s necks with either a razor or other sharp object.

Backstory: The porcelain doll once belonged to an insane 11 year old boy named Preston Gradell who killed seven other young boys in his neighborhood in the year of 1840, it’s said that he even ate one of his victim’s fingers. he would usually cut open his victim’s necks and then hide their corpses in a chest in his tree house in his family’s garden. One day, Preston Gradell came across Preston’s chest hidden in his tree house and discovered the seven dead bodies. Preston was arrested and committed to a mental hospital, he brought his porcelain doll with him since he was his only friend. He continued to kill other patients, nurses and doctors at the hospital. He was eventually put in an isolation cell, but with one window, but a window with iron bars. After many days being isolated in the cell, his mental illness grew worse and worse and he got more and more aggressive, he bit anyone who entered his cell to death. Finally, he grew tired of being locked up in his cell so he tried to escape from his cell, but his head got stuck in the window and when he tried to pull it out, he accidentally broke his neck. The only thing that was left of Preston was his dear porcelain doll. But his soul got transferred into his porcelain doll, bringing him to life again and since he was a porcelain doll, he was now able to escape the hospital through the window. Preston is now on the loose, but now, he calls himself Preston the doll and continues to do the thing he loves the most, killing and spreading fear throughout New York City
Catchphrase: Why should people play with dolls when the dolls can play with the people?

"it's just lazy and bad writing!"
oh my god he kissed someone who wasn't his girlfriend! bro sound the fucking alarms this season is off the rails!
y'all. if i had to watch showrunners lie to/gaslight/embarrass their entire cast using secret reshoots and script changes, a last minute fake ending, and a two year long NDA in order to push through an eleventh hour "season finale crazy plot twist they'll never see coming omg!1!!11!1" where they made their canonically depressed and suicidal main character (who we first meet while he is in inpatient treatment) litcherally kill himself following a season-long mental health crisis spiral, oh-so-conveniently saving them from the arduous ordeal of having to actually go through with writing the gay relationship they had been forecasting all season long (and getting tons of free press from the gay actor who played the main character's love interest about how excited he was to be a part of this important representation! ha. understandably, he was hurt and furious and crushed and humiliated when he realized he had been literally tricked into fucking marketing a bury your gays situation), and then try to walk all their dogshit choices back on Twitter by claiming it "wasn't suicide but rather a brave and selfless act of heroism in the heat of battle" even though they literally called it suicide in the episode, all while literally just flat-out lying and saying they ~had approval from the author of the original source material~ (an author who created that character in the first place as a form of catharsis for his own deeply personal real life mental health journey!) when in reality they never even attempted to consult or warn him (as evidenced by the author guest appearing on multiple fan run podcasts to publicly audibly cry about how fucking insulting and triggering and what a slap in the face this whole thing was and how it had completely ruined the story he wrote and loved so much) needless to mention the fact that the rest of the cast was so furious and betrayed that they were publicly liking tweets THEIR SHOWRUNNER BOSSES WERE *TAGGED IN* saying things like "this was dogshit unacceptable treatment and you should quit and i am so fucking sorry that you were tricked in this way" and literally running a fucking Trevor Project LGBTQ+ suicide prevention fund donation campaign set up in the name of this main character (and personally donating THOUSANDS of dollars to it)
(this show then limped on for one more pathetic season featuring stellar writing choices such as, uhh, werewolf STD? margo choosing irrelevant-ass fish josh over her best fucking friend in the world? oh, and my personal favorite, the series ending with all the straight couples paired off happily and starting exciting new adventures like getting married and having babies, starting a new society on another planet, etc meanwhile the last time we see the One surviving gay character, he's a) A WIDOW, b) beyond depressed, c) drinking again, d) a teacher for some reason even though he fucking hated school, e) hanging out at college dorms and parties as a professor? because i guess they were going for some "he peaked in grad school and it was all downhill from there" type shit, oh yeah and f) LITERALLY WITHOUT A SINGLE FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER because his best friend and every single person in his support system were on another fucking planet with no way for him to contact them ever again!
but like, it's fine, and it's not homophobic, because cardboard cutout background character man #4 with six total minutes of screentime who happens to be a weird ugly 1840s sex ghost who lives inside a magic bracelet- he's there! and he's willing to fuck eliot so it's all okay. #lovewins!)
anyway. if i lived through that then like. full offense but you can deal with a minor cheating plotline you don't love and a boring white bitch having a few more scenes than she should for *part* of *half* of*one* season. lmao

January 18, 2021: The Mask of Zorro (Epilogue)
Some good old fashioned ‘90s fun, this one! WHOO! This one’s not an Oscar winner, sure, but I’d watch it again! It was a good time. Anyway, let’s break it down, shall we? HEEYA, TORNADO, AWAY!!
Tumblr media
Recap
Tumblr media
Cast and Acting
Antonio Banderas is suave when he needs to be, but also injects needed character and roughness when it’s necessary. He’s a great Zorro, and he genuinely makes me root for him. At the same time, he has a darker past, and they don’t shy away from that fact. Great choice for the character, and I do like the idea of officially making Zorro Hispanic, if I’m honest. Anthony Hopkins is surprisingly fantastic as the old Zorro, a role that was originally going to be played by...Sean Connery. HOLY SHIT, is it lucky that he dropped out, because Hopkins is way better than Connery would’ve been. His portrayal is full of pain and deep-seated revenge, but also clearly is still in mourning. Catherine Zeta-Jones has an interesting turn as the Inevitable Love Interest. However, I can’t really claim that the character is anything overly unusual, especially for the time period where the movie is set. And I think she suffers from simply not being given enough. Again, kind of the typical Inevitable Love Interest. Not necessarily bad...but definitely needs some more meat. Matt Letscher and Stuart Wilson were fine villains, playing their Sheriff of Nottingham and Prince John roles satisfactorily. But I also can’t say they stretched beyond that at all. Really, I’m saying that Banderas and Hopkins were great beyond what was given of them, and the others...served their role. 7/10 for this one.

Plot and Writing
The plot for this movie, while historically inaccurate, was fine! Wasn’t really anything unique, though, given the fact that this film is essentially Robin Hood in Mexico. Which, yeah, is entirely fine (one could argue that I love that movie and I STILL WISH I COULD’VE TALKED ABOUT ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD DAMMIT), but it did its job, while also throwing in its own setting-based innovations. It’s the kind of plot perfect for your stereotypical popcorn movie. Now, the writing...the writing. The writing works...sometimes. And other times...Elena talks, I’m sorry, her lines were REALLY BAD half the time. Whoof. But Banderas and Hopkins did seem to be given the good lines throughout. Look, the story and writing aren’t exactly bad, but they’re not really anything to write home about, let’s be honest. We’re going 6/10 here.

Directing and Action
When this film was developed, both Steven Spielberg AND Robert Rodriguez were on the docket at some point. But both dropped out, and their replacement was...Martin Campbell. Won’t get off this list, huh, Marty? But, as is typical of Campbell, the action was fantastic, fun, engaging, and well-shot. The directing was good as well, and the cinematography definitely had its moments. Not amongst the best in the repertoire of Campbell and Philip Méheux (yup, him again, too), but definitely not the worst. Again, great, if not spectacular in some cases. 7/10 for this, though, since it was a lot of fun.

Production and Art Design
High points for this one! From its period-authentic wardrobe to its beautiful set pieces, this movie brings you into 1840s California, at least as far as non history major would know. It certainly felt authentic to me, although I’ll freely admit that I’m no an aficionado of Mexican cultural history. And when the sets aren’t fully realistic, they’re certainly memorable. The mine is a massive feeling setpiece, and you feel the grandeur and danger throughout it. Full credit to production designer Cecilia Montiel, costume designer Graciela Mazón, and art directors Michael Atwell and Ernie Merlan for the 8/10 I’m giving this movie!
Tumblr media
Music and Editing
Legendary composer James Horner, ladies, gentlemen, and others! The pasodoble music score, laced with horns and guitars, is a wonderful and memorable element of the score. And while I wish this movie had a Hispanic composer (and director, and a writer), Horner’s good at composing somewhat culturally accurate music. So, music was mostly good...except for that end credits song. NO. NO THANK YOU PLEASE. Fun fact for you: this film was nominated for the Academy Awards for Sound and Sound Editing. Did it win? No, lost both to to Saving Private Ryan, understandably. Did it deserve to win? Well...some of the sound editing is quite good! And other times...the explosions roar. So, it’s mixed for that. Still, for the great music, and the good sound design during most action sequences (most action sequences), I’m giving it an 8/10.
Tumblr media
72%, folks.
And like Atomic Blonde, it seems low, but I will absolutely watch this movie again, it’s a fun time! It’s the kind of movie that you turn on in the background when it’s on TV, look over, and enjoy yourself for a few minutes. I really did enjoy this one!
But, now that some somewhat light fare’s been enjoyed...we’re going to start looking at a different type of hero.
A bloody one. And we’re gonna start...en France. And...maladroitement.
