I just rewatched Strange Magic again after so many years and do you know what I need now? I need me a fic dedicated to this film but it is a PROPER slow-burn. 100k words, 50+ chapters, angst. To the point where it is killing me. Because I loved the film, I just now need it to hurt.

Project Almanac (2015)
Tumblr media
Project Almanac falls prey to the Achille’s Heel of bad time travel films: its characters are stupid, rules inconsistent, and science dubious. Even if you eliminated the plotholes, you'd be left with weak character motivations and an irritating use of the found-footage gimmick.
17-year-old high schooler David (Jonny Weston), his sister Chris (Virginia Gardner), and his best friends, Adam (Allen Evangelista) and Quinn (Sam Lerner) discover the blueprints to a time machine. Once they complete the device, they have the time of their lives until David’s longtime crush, Jessie (Sofia Black-D’Elia) becomes involved.
The time machine our protagonists build has some limitations, which sets us off on the right path. This avoids the potential ramifications of assassinating a young Mike Schneider before he directs Night of the Living Dead Re-Animated or other history-altering moves. Instead, the teens use the device to “skip” school, ace tests, etc. Disappointingly, the more trips they take, the more the picture becomes prey to standard time-travel tropes. In this film, if two versions of the same person come face-to-face, it creates a sort of feedback loop, which threatens to erase you from existence. Why? Does it have anything to do with altering the past? No, because whether messing with the timeline is perfectly fine or threatens all of existence depends on the scene. I understand the choice to pay homage to classic sci-fi stories like A Sound of Thunder, but here, the central conflict doesn’t really make any sense. I can believe that killing a prehistoric butterfly would change the future because millions of years have passed. Who knows how much happened between then and now? One little experiment causing the death of hundreds through a bizarre Final Destination-like chain? That's a stretch.
You might be able to forgive the numerous inconsistencies (I don’t) but you'll have a tough time accepting where this story goes. David is one of the most handsome nerds you'll ever see, he’s got the skills to put together a working time machine… but his actions are so stupid they’ll drive you nuts. In fact, none of these characters are particularly smart. Why bother distracting your past self so that you can take the test instead of them… when it would be much easier (and less risky when you consider that feedback loop thing) to send yourself a text message or a note? It’s not like the time machine is a secret!
We didn’t even cover the found-footage aspect, which is contrived. These kids are documenting themselves performing a bunch of crimes. Why? Wouldn’t you leave that out of your home video? There was no reason for this film to be shot the way it was, except to jump on the money-saving bandwagon. The shoddy writing and camera techniques wind up drowning everything the movie does well, a big letdown because it shows promise at first. I can see those who aren’t critical of science fiction films giving Project Almanac a pass, but under any scrutiny, you'll realize you're settling if this is what you choose to watch. 31 Days of Great Horror Movie Scenes - Day 13  How to Lure Out a Killer - The Final Girls (2015)
Horror comedies work best when they really know the genre they are parodying -Shaun of the Dead, Scream- and The Final Girls puts a hilarious spin on the whole Jason Voorhees camp killer.
A group of teenagers are thrown into the movie projection of a ‘classic’ 80s slasher horror that starred one of their mothers, and they find themselves in a world of outdated cliches and cheesy characters. There's also a strong emotional hook in the girl's quest to save her mother in the film, something she couldn't do in real life.
But the best thing is the wicked sense of humor. Fo example, whenever any of the film characters take off a piece of clothing, sinister music begins to sound for everyone to hear, and the killer soon makes an appearance. The modern characters soon use this to their advantage, and to draw the killer out for a final showdown, they let the film's principal Bimbo character loose to get as naked as she wants. Of course, the mist soon stars to roll in and the Jason-alike can't resist stumbling in for the kill.

Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Tumblr media
Jupiter Ascending reminded me a lot of The Fifth Element. They’re both fantastical science-fiction stories with their own wild mythologies, set in galaxies filled with colorful aliens, with a big love plot at its center, plenty of special-effects heavy action to make it feel epic. The difference is that The Fifth Element was cool. At best, Jupiter Ascending is entertaining in an "I can't believe they thought this was going to work" kind of way.
Meek Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) is nearly assassinated by aliens. To her rescue comes Caine Wise (Channing Tatum), who looks human but is actually a genetically-engineered human-canine soldier. From him, Jupiter learns she’s the heiress to a dynasty of powerful space beings who've been waiting for thousands of years to harvest the Earth’s lifeforce. The fate of the world now rests in her hands.
Jupiter Ascending probably started as a relatively simple idea: What if you learned you were the heiress to an evil monarchy and that the fate of the kingdom suddenly depended on you?
"But how could anyone know you were the heiress to some kingdom you'd never heard of? They didn’t have DNA tests in the Middle Ages and there’s no way the resemblance could be THAT good.”
“But what if the randomization of chromosomes created an exact copy of another person? Then the resemblance could be THAT good.”
"That would only happen like, once in a million years. No one would be alive to recognize her”
“Well, they would be if she’s the ‘reincarnation’ of a really powerful woman from a family of immortals.”
And so, the Wachowskis (who wrote and directed) kept going with this premise, with each draft becoming bigger and more convoluted. Turns out Earth is actually a farm for these immortals. We aren't merely one of many species in the universe; humans didn't even originate from Earth! Our heroine is swept up and forced into this political game from space as family members scheme to manipulate her and obtain the right to harvest the Earth so they can prolong their lives. There is an idea there. Too bad the Wachowskis cannot get a handle on it.
To put it bluntly, the writing is dreadful. Jupiter is not an interesting character. It's like she saw Cinderella, saw the ending, and thought "but won't she find happily ever after boring?" Once Jupiter learns she’s space royalty, all she wants to do is go back to cleaning toilets on Earth. I know this is science fiction, but come on. Give me something a little bit credible.
In this whole 2 hour+ movie, Jupiter has 3 things to do. 1) Wear beautiful gowns so the audience can admire her. 2) Fall so she can be rescued by Caine. 3) Be easily manipulated by the villains so the plot can keep going. Nobody is safe from the shoddy plot. Eddie Redmayne plays Balem Abrasax, a man who desperately wants to consume Earth's life force and the film's main villain. The more you find out about him, the more laughable he becomes. Redmayne overacts so much you can’t believe he didn't bribe the editor to destroy all of his footage. It's that bad.
The longer you watch Jupiter Ascending, the stupider it seems. What are the odds that someone called “Jupiter” winds up traveling to the planet? It’s the biggest coincidence of all time! If only the action was exciting, but the barrage of fast-moving special effects includes so many characters you don't care about - at all - you'll be bored to sleep. A catastrophe this obvious you’d expect to be some rinky-dink operation that never left the VHS format and featured no-name actors with shoddy special effects slapped on top. NO! This cost over $200 million to make!
You can’t make up a film that’s as fascinatingly deficient as Jupiter Ascending. Over and over, its nuttiness and incoherence surprise you. I'll happily admit I had a lot of fun. Anyone who gets even a little bit of glee from the kind of big-budget catastrophes that left the cast and crew questioning their life choices will have a good time. (February 3, 2017)

Area 51 (2015)
Tumblr media
Area 51 is everything that comes to mind when someone says “bad found-footage horror film”. There’s nothing memorable about this picture at all, it's as scary as an empty desert and does little to justify its filmmaking choices.
Friends Reid (Reid Warner), Darrin (Darrin Bragg) and Ben (Ben Rovner) have all disappeared. Through recovered footage, we discover all three became obsessed with investigating Area 51 after Reid had a strange experience one night.
There is no reason for this to be a found-footage film except for the genre's ability to "get away" with having no budget. At least half of this picture’s running time is dedicated to the three friends getting ready to go to Area 51. They meet up with Reid’s friend, Jelena (Jenela Nik), they detail how they’re going to sneak into the government facility, how dangerous/illegal that is, they break into a house to get the keys they need to get in... and thoroughly document what they’re doing. Why? Who would do that? Is it so they can easily incriminate themselves? Why would they show their faces and use their names? I understand maybe making an intro to your video, telling people what the plan is going to be before getting there in case something happens but leave out the criminal activities! It all feels so manufactured.
“Found Footage” is a tool. It can be used very effectively when done right. The ones I always go back to are The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield. Those first two are ultimately inconclusive. You could plausibly deny all of the so-called supernatural stuff, which makes it feel real. Cloverfield recreates what would be a piece of evidence from a well-documented event seldom seen from the ground level. All of them have something  that allows you to immerse yourself and that magic ingredient is completely absent from Area 51. The use of 2 cameras feels phoney. You wonder who edited this footage together. When you find out what’s happening in the government facility, it’s not original or impressive. In fact, it showcases a profound lack of imagination from director/writer Oren Peli. You don’t particularly like the protagonists and the film is never actually scary. I don’t mean that I wasn’t scared. I mean that there’s nothing to be afraid of. If you’ve seen any found-footage film, you can predict where the characters are going so easily you'll doze off from boredom.
The more I think about Area 51, the more I dislike it. If only it were truly awful it might be memorable. Instead, it's so mediocre it leaves you feeling like you just wasted your time. At least an awful picture could make you appreciate what good films do, or might make for an interesting rant. This? you’re going to forget within a few days of seeing. There’s nothing original or noteworthy about Area 51. (January 6, 2017)
