The street is alive with the sound of Art Noveau

Only 6 minute walk from the Długa Targ main square, through streets with colorful facades, you find this building with Art Noveau adverts style. It is rather loud art in an otherwise peaceful backalley.

But the adverts are true. You can get excellent coffe here, and pilsener beer. There are two hospitality businesses at this spot, a cafe to the left and a restaurant to the right. The Cafe 86 ended business when the pandemic hit and the close downs/stay at home orders started.

It is now run under new management and new name: Fika Cafe, taking the swedish word "Fika" meaning a coffebreak with pastry and smalltalk, into good use. Best swedish export idea since Ikea, IMHO.

Fika Cafe are serving hot drinks of coffee, tea and chocolate, bakery products like cakes and croissants, and breakfast. All in various styles of continental, polish and french cafe business. And soft drinks. All in a locality with red bricks and light paint with large windows.

According to customers reviews, Fika has taken the quality of food and drinks a step up. Prices starts at one dollar up.

The thai restaurant to the right was serving thai food adjusted for Europeans taste buds, and local beer as well as imported Thai beer. Do not order thai beer in Europe, it does not taste right in a cold, dry climate. Take it from a traveller with several years having Bangkok as a base for travels in Asia.

These streets are made for walking. For people who enjoy exploring by extensive walks, Gdansk is perfect.

Et glimt av familieliv med forfedre

Når man blir kjent med lokal khmer, så er det nesten ikke måte på hvor gjestfrie og vennlige de kan være.

Dette var utsikten rundt soloppgang morgenen etter å ha blitt invitert hjem til en venn i en landsby i Kampot Thom for middag og overnatting.

Jeg sier var, siden han og familien har bygd seg mer moderne bygg på denne tomta.

Klar for mye vann

Det klassiske bygget til venstre er typisk for mange hjem bygd nær elv og innsjø i Kambodsja. Hevet på korte og lange stylter er eiendeler og folk i sikkerhet når regntida kommer. Ikke bare for de små dammene som flommer over etter en regnskur. Men også for de gangene det kommer uvanlig mye regn, og lokale demninger og flomvern oversvømmes. Risikoen er alltid der, siden risproduksjonen krever marker med mye vann.

Skjulet litt til venstre var også på stylter, men har vegger på tre sider. Og en alkove over som fungere som soverom.

Nå erstattes slike styltehus av mer moderne drenering, både rundt tomta og under nybygg. Samt at de nye byggene gjerne bygges med klaring til lavere deler av tomta.

Familieheder

Til høyre ses familiegravstedet til de eldste familiemedlemmene som eide området. Nærhet til forfedre for å minnes og æres er en sentral del av familieliv og religiøst liv i Kambodsja. Etterhvert som familien vokser, brukes gjerne familiegravsteder i nekropoliser nær pagodaer og templer for å minnes avdøde familiemedlemmer.

Det som oppbevares er aske og beinrester fra kremering, som er den vanligste form for gravferd i land med buddhisitisk majoritetsreligion.

Egentlig en litt hyggelig skikk, som knytter fortid og framtid sammen.

Samme dag, i en annen del av samme kommune, kom en regnskur. Og nytten av klassisk byggestil ble demonstrert når området foran huset ble flytende.

Cathedral with a spring blue backdrop This is largest Othodox Cathedral in the Baltics. It was designed, fittingly, in a neo-byzantine architectural style. The Nativity of Christ Cathedral (Latvian: Kristus Piedzimšanas pareizticīgo katedrāle) was built between 1876 to 1883. At that time the country was part of of the Russian Empire. The cathedral got a huge collection of religious icons, important sacred paintings in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The celebration of the birth of Christ in Eastern Orthodoxy happens every year on January 7 in the international calendar. They follows the original roman calendar the international calendar is based on. During its lifetime the cathedral has mirrored the changing circumstansces for the Latvian Nation. In 1917 the German Empire occupied Latvia, and the Cahedral was converted to a Lutheran Christian Church. When the Empire lost the the war in 1918, the first Latvian Republic converted the Cathedral back to Ortodox Christianity. During the Soviet Union occupation, the church was closed down and turned into a planetarium. The reestablishment of the Latvian Republic in 1990s returned the church to Eastern Orthodoxy. There is a lot of charm visiting the former imperial capital of Viet Nam. But be prepared for rain and humidity.

But the great experience is that colours get very sharp and vivid several times a day. It opens for some very nice photo opportunities.

It also means to always have a rain poncho available, good shoes with great rain grip, looking for shellter, and be sure to get hot food whenever possible. The humid weather changes how food taste. And sometimes into complete different taste when it cools off.

One of the interesting learnings in the central cuisine of Viet Nam is that it opens for some new and interesting methods and spice use and aromats in food made to counter that effect.

The monsoon in Viet Nam starts in April, and ends in November/Desember in the Huĕ/Da Nang-midregion. Outside this season, the area is hot and humid.

Moon and starry night in Gdansk Harbour

A photo of building and crane by night is an nice view to the historic importance of Gdansk and its harbour.

In 999CE the first historic referrence of a harbour and a trading post at the mouth of river Vistula is mentioned. This was the start of historic Gdansk, and it has played a role in several historic occations.

Membership in the hanseatic league 1361CE put the city on a fast track to growth, wealth and influence. And in under a century the city got special royal privilieges as a royal city by the polish king in 1457CE.

During the napoleon wars in early 1800s this great European tribe war made the city changed rulers and allegiance several times. It ended up being a preussian and later german city until 1919.

Gdansk become the "polish Danzig-corridor" dividing the former German empire in two after the loss in WWI. As most else provisions in the tragic peace treaty of Versailles, it set the stage for the next big war.

And in 1939 the Europe Theater of World War II started with a naval attack on Gdansk from der Kriegsmarine of Na*i-Germany.

In 1980 the trade labor Union Solidarity, was founded at Lenin Warf in Gdansk Harbour. That started out being the symbol of resistance against communism and the Soviet Union not only in Poland, but in most of Eastern Europa. They succeded in 1989 with the fall of Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the East Block and the end of the Cold War.

Today the Gdansk Harbour is a modern harbour combining trade, history and modern life like a modern coastal city of this world.

Night by the moat This is actually not a moat. It is the flooded trench after the former city walls. The wall was built around the medieval Riga City on three sides, with the Daugava River on the fourth. When it was torn down, the river flooded in and made a city channel To the the left/southwest here is the old Riga, Vecrīga, a very nice historical center and neighborhood. There are several old buildings, churches and and cathedrals in the old town. They represent a mix of several styles in a living and developing city over 800 years. The architecture containg great examples of styles from medieval, reneissance, baroque and Art Noveau. Like the National Opera and Ballet center center left in the photo. To the right/east is the newer Centr (sic) part of Riga, but this area is still part of the Historic Centre of Riga. The sunset over the farm in the hills These sloping hills east of Mzuzu city are pretty by day, but the sunset rays gives it a warm glow. Continuing to the east, the hills end down in Nkhata bay, a white beach area popular with travellers wanting to enjoy the Lake Malawi away from the heavier tourists spots in the south. Mzuzu is 367 km north of the capital Lilongwe, and have a small, but sufficient range of accommodations and facilities suitable for most travellers. Its elevation makes it a not to sweltering hot place to stay and explore. Just beware of the crocodiles The Lingadzi River is flowing through the north part of the capital Lilongwe, ending in the Lilongwe river. Access to streams and rivers was the origin source for water and start of settlement in the area. Various streams and rivers are visible in parts of the city, but as the city grows, you sometimes have to go looking for them. Following the main river downstream, it flows into Lake Malawi. I found this sideriver visiting the Wildlife Center where they building a learning and caring hub. Together with animal rescue efforts, and sheltering of some indigenous flora, it is a nice and rough place to explore nature in the city. This walking track with information displays is an easy access to wildlife and terrain. Very close, infact: Some 50 meters away from this sign was one sign warning about crocodiles in the river. It is a very typical style mosque in this part of Africa. Two-thirds of the blueman group The vervet monkey is found in five subspecies in Africa. Being a medium small monkey living in social groups, it is heavily research for close to human social behaviour. That includes human conditions like anciety and hypertension, and alcohol abuse. This research is vital for understanding and treatment, both for humans and vervets. Some of the males develop this blue scrotum, and it is meant as signal of masculinity and quality as a mating partner. It is also a signal of rank within the family group, the lower the rank, the paler the blue colour. When the male reach maturity, it will move to another social group away from the mothers group. Often accompagnied by a vervet brother or friend. Chlorocebus pygerythrus can be referred to as vervet only. Its subspecies varies in colour in different shades of grey. And with some black and brown reddish versions. Adult males weigh between 3.9 and 8.0 kg, and have a body length between 420 and 600 mm from the top of the head to the base of the tail.
