Apple's encryption capitulation

I'm on a 20+ city book tour for my new novel PICKS AND SHOVELS. Catch me in NYC on TOMORROW (26 Feb) with JOHN HODGMAN and at PENN STATE THURSDAY (Feb 27). More tour dates here. Mail-order signed copies from LA's Diesel Books.
The UK government has just ordered Apple to secretly compromise its security for every iOS user in the world. Instead, Apple announced it will disable a vital security feature for every UK user. This is a terrible outcome, but it just might be the best one, given the circumstances:
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgj54eq4vejo
So let's talk about those circumstances. In 2016, Theresa May's Conservative government passed a law called the "Investigative Powers Act," better known as the "Snooper's Charter":
https://www.snooperscharter.co.uk/
This was a hugely controversial law for many reasons, but most prominent was that it allowed British spy agencies to order tech companies to secretly modify their software to facilitate surveillance. This is alarming in several ways. First, it's hard enough to implement an encryption system without making subtle errors that adversaries can exploit.
Tiny mistakes in encryption systems are leveraged by criminals, foreign spies, griefers, and other bad actors to steal money, lock up our businesses and governments with ransomware, take our data, our intimate images, our health records and worse. The world is already awash in cyberweapons that terrible governments and corporations use to target their adversaries, such as the NSO Group malware that the Saudis used to hack Whatsapp, which let them lure Jamal Khashoggi to his death. The stakes couldn't be higher:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/02/04/citizen-lab/#nso-group
Encryption protects everything from the software updates for pacemakers and anti-lock braking to population-scale financial transactions and patient records. Deliberately introducing bugs into these systems to allow spies and cops to "break" encryption when they need to is impossible, which doesn't stop governments from demanding it. Notoriously, when former Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull was told that the laws of mathematics decreed that there is no way to make encryption that only stops bad guys but lets in good guys, he replied "The laws of mathematics are very commendable but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/07/australian-pm-calls-end-end-encryption-ban-says-laws-mathematics-dont-apply-down
The risks don't stop with bad actors leveraging new bugs introduced when the "lawful interception" back-doors are inserted. The keys that open these back-doors inevitably circulate widely within spy and police agencies, and eventually – inevitably – they leak. This is called the "keys under doormats" problem: if the police order tech companies to hide the keys to access billions of peoples' data under their doormats, eventually, bad guys will find them there:
https://academic.oup.com/cybersecurity/article/1/1/69/2367066
Again, this isn't a theoretical risk. In 1994, Bill Clinton signed a US law called CALEA that required FBI back-doors for data switches. Most network switches in use today have CALEA back-doors and they have been widely exploited by various bad guys. Most recently, the Chinese military used CALEA backdoors to hack Verizon, AT&T and Lumen:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/07/foreseeable-outcomes/#calea
This is the backdrop against which the Snooper's Charter was passed. Parliament stuck its fingers in its ears, covered its eyes, and voted for the damned thing, swearing that it would never result in any of the eminently foreseeable harms they'd been warned of.
Which brings us to today. Two weeks ago, the Washington Post's Joseph Menn broke the story that Apple had received a secret order from the British government, demanding that they install a back-door in the encryption system that protects cloud backups of iOS devices:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2025/02/07/apple-encryption-backdoor-uk/
Virtually every iOS device in the world regularly backs itself up to Apple's cloud backup service. This is very useful: if your phone or tablet is lost, stolen or damaged, you can recover your backup to a new device in a matter of minutes and get on with your day. It's also very lucrative for Apple, which charges every iOS user a few dollars every month for backup services. The dollar amount here is small, but that sum is multiplied by the very large number of Apple devices, and it rolls in every single month.
Since 2022, Apple has offered its users a feature called "Advanced Data Protection" that employs "end-to-end" encryption (E2EE) for these backups. End-to-end encryption keeps data encrypted between the sender and the receiver, so that the service provider can't see what they're saying to each other. In the case of iCloud backups, this means that while an Apple customer can decrypt their backup data when they access it in the cloud, Apple itself cannot. All Apple can see is that there is an impenetrable blob of user data on one of its servers.
2022 was very late for Apple to have added E2EE to its cloud backups. After all, in 2014, Apple customers suffered a massive iCloud breach when hackers broke into the iCloud backups of hundreds of celebrities, leaking nude photos and other private data, in a breach colloquially called "Celebgate" or "The Fappening":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_celebrity_nude_photo_leak
Apple almost rolled out E2EE for iCloud in 2018, but scrapped the plans after Donald Trump's FBI leaned on them:
https://www.reuters.com/article/world/exclusive-apple-dropped-plan-for-encrypting-backups-after-fbi-complained-sour-idUSKBN1ZK1CO/
Better late than never. For three years, Apple customers' backups have been encrypted, at rest, on Apple's servers, their contents fully opaque to everyone except the devices' owners. Enter His Majesty's Government, clutching the Snooper's Charter. As the eminent cryptographer Matthew Green writes, a secret order to compromise the cloud backups of British users is necessarily a secret order to compromise all users' encrypted backups:
https://blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2025/02/23/three-questions-about-apple-encryption-and-the-u-k/
There's no way to roll out a compromised system in the UK that differs from non-British backups without the legion of reverse-engineers and security analysts noticing that something new is happening in Britain and correctly inferring that Apple has been served with a secret "Technical Capability Notice" under the Snooper's Charter:
Even if you imagine that Apple is only being asked only to target users in the U.K., the company would either need to build this capability globally, or it would need to deploy a new version or “zone”1 for U.K. users that would work differently from the version for, say, U.S. users. From a technical perspective, this would be tantamount to admitting that the U.K.’s version is somehow operationally distinct from the U.S. version. That would invite reverse-engineers to ask very pointed questions and the secret would almost certainly be out.
For Apple, the only winning move was not to play. Rather than breaking the security for its iCloud backups worldwide, it simply promised to turn off all security for backups in the UK. If they go through with it, every British iOS user – doctors, lawyers, small and large business, and individuals – will be exposed to incalculable risk from spies and criminals, both organized and petty.
For Green, this is Apple making the best of an impossible conundrum. Apple does have a long and proud history of standing up to governmental demands to compromise its users. Most notably, the FBI ordered Apple to push an encryption-removing update to its phones in 2016, to help it gain access to a device recovered from the bodies of the San Bernardino shooters:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/02/eff-support-apple-encryption-battle
But it's worth zooming out here for a moment and considering all the things that led up to Apple facing this demand. By design, Apple's iOS platform blocks users from installing software unless Apple approves it and lists it in the App Store. Apple uses legal protections (such as Section 1201 of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and Article 6 of the EUCD, which the UK adopted in 2003 through the Copyright and Related Rights Regulations) to make it a jailable offense to reverse-engineer and bypass these blocks. They also devote substantial technical effort to preventing third parties from reverse-engineering its software and hardware locks. Installing software forbidden by Apple on your own iPhone is thus both illegal and very, very hard.
This means that if Apple removes an app from its App Store, its customers can no longer get that app. When Apple launched this system, they were warned – by the same cohort of experts who warned the UK government about the risks of the Snooper's Charter – that it would turn into an attractive nuisance. If a corporation has the power to compromise billions of users' devices, governments will inevitably order that corporation to do so.
Which is exactly what happened. Apple has already removed all working privacy tools for its Chinese users, purging the Chinese App Store of secure VPN apps, compromising its Chinese cloud backups, and downgrading its Airdrop file-transfer software to help the Chinese state crack down on protesters:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/11/foreseeable-consequences/#airdropped
These are the absolutely foreseeable – and foreseen – outcomes of Apple arrogating total remote control over its customers' devices to itself. If we're going to fault Theresa May's Conservatives for refusing to heed the warnings of the risks introduced by the Snooper's Charter, we should be every bit as critical of Apple for chasing profits at the expense of billions of its customers in the face of warnings that its "curated computing" model would inevitably give rise to the Snooper's Charter and laws like it.
As Pavel Chekov famously wrote: "a phaser on the bridge in act one will always go off by act three." Apple set itself up with the power to override its customers' decisions about the devices it sells them, and then that power was abused in a hundred ways, large and small:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/22/vin-locking/#thought-differently
Of course, there are plenty of third-party apps in the App Store that allow you to make an end-to-end encrypted backup to non-Apple cloud servers, and Apple's onerous App Store payment policies mean that they get to cream off 30% of every dollar you spend with its rivals:
https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1iv072y/endtoend_encrypted_alternative_to_icloud_drive/
It's entirely possible to find an end-to-end encrypted backup provider that has no presence in the UK and can tell the UK government to fuck off with its ridiculous back-door demands. For example, Signal has repeatedly promised to pull its personnel and assets out of the UK before it would compromise its encryption:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/05/theyre-still-trying-to-ban-cryptography/
But even if the company that provides your backup is impervious to pressure from HMG, Apple isn't. Apple has the absolute, unchallenged power to decide which apps are in its App Store. Apple has a long history of nuking privacy-preserving and privacy-enhancing apps from its App Store in response to complaints, even petty ones from rival companies like Meta:
https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/29/23378541/the-og-app-instagram-clone-pulled-from-app-store
If they're going to cave into Zuck's demand to facilitate spying on Instagram users, do we really think they'll resist Kier Starmer's demands to remove Signal – and any other app that stands up to the Snooper's Charter – from the App Store?
It goes without saying that the "bad guys" the UK government claims it wants to target will be able to communicate in secret no matter what Apple does here. They can just use an Android phone and sideload a secure messaging app, or register an iPhone in Ireland or any other country and bring it to the UK. The only people who will be harmed by the combination of the British government's reckless disregard for security, and Apple's designs that trade the security of its users for the security of its shareholders are millions of law-abiding Britons, whose most sensitive data will be up for grabs by anyone who hacks their accounts.

Previous years: 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023
Ended up a touch Aeryn-heavy this year, though Generic WoL, various NPCs, the other OCs, forays in the FC's AUs, and some supporting family cast members make appearances. There's even a callback to a previous FFXIV Write entry. Lots of Endwalker and Dawntrail due to recency bias, but it manages to span the spectrum from backstories through various expansions.
I only did 1 Free Day, due to having 2 solid ideas I ended up writing for that prompt. It was right at the end of my annual birthday vacation week, so I was pretty rested (may also be why they're among the longer entries!). Unusually, the rest of that week's works are not any longer than the others.
I'm also still working on some original writing, though, so that did cut into fanfiction time.
Below 500 words: #2 Horizon (347), #3 Tempest (415), #7 Morsel (499), #10 Stable (400), #13 Butte (477), #14 Telling (355), #17 Sally (464), #20 Duel (499), #24 Bar (462).
500 - 1,000 words: #1 Steer (944), #4 Reticent (581), #5 Stamp (588), #11 Surrogate (964), #12 Quarry (844), #16 Third-Rate (564), #18 Hackneyed (577), #19 Taken (915), #21 Shade (764), #23 On Cloud Nine (728), #25 Perpetuity (958), #26 Zip (592), #27 Memory (810), #30 Two Heads are Better than One (500).
Over 1,000 words: #6 Halcyon (2,479), #9 Lend an Ear (1,326), #28 Deleterious (1,099), #29 Deleterious 2 (1,231).
Shortest: #2 Horizon Longest: #6 Halcyon
Total: 20,382 words. Not my shortest but far from my longest. Comparing with the previous years, I can see a clear improvement in my grasp of both NPC and OC voices, and more confidence in general.
Even so, "Butte", "Sally", "Bar", and "Zip" were the hardest for me this year, and I may need to warm up to them. I love "Halcyon" for a lot of reasons, and am also fond of the lighter offerings in "Duel" and "On Cloud Nine." I like a lot of the others, particularly when trying to get into NPC heads (even if they're really weird places to be ffs, Zenos).
Not too many shippy entries this year, one of them for one of the AUs, one mostly talking about it rather than seeing it, but I like "Hackneyed" a lot as it's been awhile since I've written about Aeryn & Thancred's literary tastes (and opposite ways of treating their books).
These will eventually be revised and added to Ao3, and then we await next year!

Jikook Week 16 Complete ✔️(26/03-02/04/2024)
Their sixteenth week in the military is now complete. It's time to celebrate this milestone with a look back at this week in 2018.
No shows or concerts this week but a lot of content was released. On the 28/03 the first episode of Burn the Stage, the documentary series showing the behind the scenes of the Wings Tour in 2017, was released. The first episode covered the preparations for the tour. The members describe their role in the group and it's revealing. Jimin babe, what do you mean you are taking on the maknae role?
youtube
Ep. 2 was released on 29/03 and covers their concerts in Seoul and Chile. The Seoul concert coincided with JHope's birthday and Jimin's antics led to an irretrievable cake malfunction for which he had to apologise profusely.
Then they are on a plane and RM has lost his passport. I heard about this incident, but seeing it on the screen, all of them stuck there, looking for the passport and wondering if they will be able to enter Chile, it makes it much more real and much more dramatic.
The clip with Jungkook dancing to Lie also comes from this episode.
Jikook are front and centre in the Chile concert. Jimin's drive for perfection and disappointment when he can't delivery and Jungkook pushing himself beyond his limits are the main focus of the second half of the episode. It is clear that the members are shocked to see JK exhausted and RM questions himself on what he as leader should do in that situation. They all faced so many challenges on tour.
youtube
Also this week, Run BTS Episode 46 came out. BTS went to a pottery studio and were tasked with making a gift for another member.
Jimin made a statue for V. He also made a rose and a cup for himself which the tutor gave top marks for attractiveness once it was fired.

JK made a tea set for RM.

Probably the funniest bit though was Hobi's remaking this famous scene from Ghost with RM in the Demi Moore role.

FAVORITE FILMS OF 2024
You could say going to see a movie at a theater is my hobby. I much prefer the theater experience. I saw 40 new films released in 2024. Only one of those via streaming because it was only shown in two theaters (LA and NYC).
Below are my nine favorite films and the reasons why. I added to honorable mentions (coincidentally both biopics) that I liked but had flaws that prevent me from calling them favorites.
I’ll post a list of my least favorite films later.
The Return (Odyssey) (12/05)
This film tells the last chapters of Homer’s the Odyssey. Odysseus (Ralph Fiennes) return home from the Trojan War after being away from 20 years. No one recognizes him and his wife (Juliette Binoche) is being pressured by dozens of men to finally remarry. The film is very faithful to the story. Very well done and both Fiennes and Binoche are terrific.
Count of Monte Cristo (01/06/25)
It’s based on the 1844 novel book by Alexander Dumas (author of the Three Musketeers). Monte Cristo is beautifully filmed and suspenseful from start to finish. (French with subtitles, limited release)
September 5 (12/09)
A film about the hostage taking at the 1972 Olympics at Munich. But it’s told from the perspective of the ABC sports crew there to report on the sporting event. I was surprised by how suspends they were able to tell the story. Some good performances by John Magaro as the control room director and Leonie Benesch as a German member of the crew.
Mars Express (05/07)
Another French movie - this one animated. It set in the far future where robots of all types work side-by-side with humans. A human detective and her robotic partner try to find a missing girl. Like all good detective stories, the more they dig, the bigger the conspiracy becomes. The art design is superb.
Nosferatu (12/25)
This remake is probably one of the best retelling of Dracula. But all the names have been changed. Orlok the vampire isn’t a romantic Count, he’s hideous. It’s creepy and beautifully shot. I particularly liked Nicholas Hoult (as a version of Johnathan Harper). He’s is terrific. (How did he sustain that level of fear and panic during the shoot?) My only “but” regarding “Nosferatu” is that I thought it was too long. It may eventually show up on Peacock but I’m an advocate for seeing movies in theaters.
Wicked: Part One (11/22)
Cynthia Erivo is terrific as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch. Her closing number “Defying Gravity” is a show stopper. Ariana Grande as Galinda holds her own opposite Erivo. The special effects and art design are also great. A couple of things keep it from being the top of my favorite list: too many of the supporting characters came off like gay stereotypes; and does Jeff Goldblum ever actually play a character or does he just play himself in everything he’s cast in?
Conclave (10/26)
I did not plan to see “Conclave”. I don’t have any interest in stories about religion nor the Catholic Church in particular. There aren’t any murders in “Conclave” but the plot follows a typical detective mystery story - Fiennes must discover who is telling the truth, and what secrets are they hiding. Fiennes is very good and it was nice seeing Isabella Rossellini in a small role.
Challengers 04/26
Challengers is about professional tennis players starring three of best young star of modern Hollywood (Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist). There are many sexy scenes of sexy actors kissing each other sexily. But the real action is on the tennis court, where they exerting themselves, sweating, grunting and slamming the ball. At there first meeting, Zendaya asks the boys if they already have girlfriends, because she doesn’t want to be a Home Breaker. This question will have repercussions in the years to come. The film is well paced and edited (especially the tennis matched). It’s directed by Luca Guadagnino who directed “Call me by your name” (2017).
Dune Part 2 (03/01)
Part 2 lives up to the promise of Part 1. Denis Villeneuve’s films are vastly superior to David Lynch’s 1984 film. The worlds and worms are masterfully created. Timothée Chalamet leads a terrific cast. The one exception is Christopher Walken as the Emperor - another actor who stopped “acting” decades ago).
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Better Man (01/07)
This is Robbie Williams biopic where he’s portrayed by a CGI chimpanzee. I accepted the conceit immediately. The movie is at its best in the first half and with the musical numbers. They are dynamic, cleverly stage and edited (especially Rock DJ). I didn’t enjoy the second half as much, as it dived into Williams’ addictions and ends with a couple unearned redemptions.
A Complete Unknown (12/25)
This is the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet. The supporting cast is terrific: Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Elle Fanning as Dylan’s on again off again girlfriend. While Chalamet is good as Dylan I felt the character was a selfish asshole.

SPIRITBOX Announces Spring 2025 North American Tour With LOATHE, DYING WISH And GEL
Two-time Grammy-nominated progressive metal band SPIRITBOX has announced the "Tsunami Sea" North American tour. Kicking off April 3 in Dallas, Texas, produced by Live Nation, the 24-date tour will hit cities across the U.S. and Canada with LOATHE, DYING WISH and GEL as support.
Tickets will first be available through a Citi presale starting today, December 3. The official artist presale begins on December 4 and will include a special Spiritboxoffice pop-up event in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. where fans can purchase tickets and meet the band. Additional presales will follow on December 5, ahead of the general onsale and Citi Cardmember Preferred Tickets, beginning Friday, December 6 at 10 a.m. local time on Spiritbox.com.
The tour wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible they have chosen to use Ticketmaster's Face Value Exchange. If fans purchase tickets for a show in the U.S. or Canada and can't attend, they'll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid. To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows except those in Colorado, Illinois, and New York where Face Value Exchange cannot be mandated. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange.
Citi is the official card of the "Tsunami Sea" North American tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, December 3 at 12 p.m. ET until Thursday, December 5 at 10 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program.
The announcement follows SPIRITBOX's second consecutive Grammy nomination for "Best Metal Performance" ("Cellar Door") which no woman has ever won this sole category. The tour announcement also follows the reveal of their anticipated sophomore album, "Tsunami Sea", slated for release on March 7 via Pale Chord / Rise Records. The album's first two singles, the heavy hitter "Soft Spine" and melodic "Perfect Soul", showcase the band's dynamic range and their ability to seamlessly fuse diverse sonic influences, offering a glimpse into the depth and ambition of the forthcoming record.
In addition to SPIRITBOX's headline U.S. and European tours in 2025, the band will jump on select dates of LINKIN PARK's world tour, joining the rock icons for performances in Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K.

* Without GEL
Formed in 2017 in the picturesque-yet-isolated region of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, by singer Courtney Laplante and guitarist Mike Stringer, SPIRITBOX became a household name in rock circles in the summer of 2020 with the release of their blistering breakout single "Holy Roller", along with a host of other captivating singles shortly after, resulting in a media firestorm of hype.
With new and existing fans eagerly watching their next move, SPIRITBOX exceeded every expectation imaginable in 2021 with the release of their genre-defining debut studio album "Eternal Blue" via Pale Chord/Rise Records. "Eternal Blue", which debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200, kicked open the doors of the heavy metal scene and rewrote the genre's playbook with 12 stunning tracks that incorporated everything from djent and post-metal to infectious synth-laden pop sensibilities and cinematic arrangements, brought fully to life by the inimitable Laplante's ethereal and commanding vocal performances.
The album cycle for "Eternal Blue" saw SPIRITBOX not only grace the covers of esteemed music publications such as Revolver, Alternative Press, Rock Sound and Kerrang!, among many others but would also solidify the band as one of the most in-demand groups in live music today with their one-hundred percent sold out, first-ever headlining tour in support of the album which saw ticket sales over 40,000. The band would also share the stage with seasoned metal veterans such as LIMP BIZKIT and GHOST and win "Best International Breakthrough Band" at the 2021 Heavy Music Awards.
In 2022, SPIRITBOX secured highly-coveted spots at numerous major U.S. rock and metal festivals and were nominated for two Juno awards, respectively. SPIRITBOX would also round out their current lineup with the inclusion of drummer Zev Rose and bassist Josh Gilbert in addition to releasing their sonically experimental EP "Rotoscope" in June of that year as well as a cross-genre collaboration with dubstep artist Illenium for the track "Shivering".
During another whirlwind year for the band, including a U.S. tour with SHINEDOWN and PAPA ROACH, SPIRITBOX wrote and recorded their critically acclaimed EP "The Fear Of Fear", released in November 2023. The EP features the single "Jaded", which was nominated for "Best Metal Performance" at the 66th annual Grammy Awards. In the same month, the band would make another genre-bending splash with a high-profile collaboration with rapper Megan Thee Stallion for a remix of her song "Cobra".

letters from me to you

every letter you didn't send to jimin
word count : 0.9k words
genre : angst; you loved jimin more than you ever imagined, and it hurts that you still do; non-idol! karina x gn! reader
t/w : none :) other than a relationship breaking apart and there's absolutely nothing that can be done about it
a/n : unrequited love, something so ever ethereal yet burns a hole in your heart and leaves a scar you will never forget. but does it hurt more when it becomes unrequited? since it wasn't from the beginning, and you had a taste of that person's love.
— 26/01/2014 | sunny ☀️
to my dearest jimin,
happy first anniversary! it's been 12 months, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525,600 minutes since you said yes under those bright stars on this very day last year. time has gone past so fast yet so slow, when I look into your eyes, everything around us seems to slow down and allow me to drown myself in those galaxy-like orbs of yours. you know I've never been expressive with my words hence this letter but still, I can never find the very words to convey my love to you. however, these four words might actually just do the trick.
I love you, forever.
your love
— 11/04/2015 | spring sun 🌸
to my crybaby jimin,
don't get mad just from reading 'crybaby' but I can't help but call you that. not after you so adorably sniffled while watching 'the notebook'. I just wanted to squeeze those cheeks of yours but I knew you were going to be upset for breaking the mood, so I held myself back. okay, this was definitely not the purpose of this letter, but oh well, I just wanted you to know you're the cutest.
happy birthday, my baby jimin! once my baby, forever my baby. I hope you had a blast today after been to the amusement park, cafes and even the late night movie later before the end of your big day. I have never been more blessed with a gift like you to be in my life and better, as my girlfriend.
once again, happy birthday. let's spend this day together in the years that are to come. I love you, forever.
your beloved
— 08/07/2015 | cloudy ☁️
to my precious jimin,
I know I'm in the wrong so I am not going to make up any excuses to justify what I did. you felt hurt and neglected by my actions and nothing can ever undo those wounds. but will you let me make it up to you? if you need time to think, take as long as you need because I'll be right here waiting until you give me a chance to prove my love for you that never faded. if anything, I only find myself loving you more than I did the day before.
work has doubled in amount but I should have known to try harder to spend time with you despite that. it is my responsibility to do that, yet I chose the easy way out and hurt you. I'm so sorry, baby. please forgive me. I love you so so much, I love you, forever.
your dumb bear (still in regret)
— 17/03/2016 | rainy 🌧️
to my wonderful and amazing jimin,
there is nothing special about today, surprise! although there isn't a special occasion today, I want to let you know that every day that I spend with you is special and every moment we have together is engraved in memory forever no matter what happens.
I know I can be cheesy but I feel like every time I tell you that I love you, it just feels more overwhelming and unbelievable. so unbelievable that I have the most beautiful; in and out; person in the whole world as my girlfriend. it would be better if one day, it would change to my wife. I can already tell how your face would start burning up and the tip of your ears cutely beet red. even though I had told you I love you numerous times, it never feels enough. I love you, forever.
yours forever
— 02/10/2017
to my lovely jimin,
it's been five years since we've been together, and I know how you are when something or someone upsets you. if you don't talk to me or even be next to me, I would not know what to say or do to help you, honey. we promised to never go to bed with complicated feelings, regardless of whether it be about us or someone else. you said it is not good for the health if we keep our feelings bottled up.
if it's about me, please, please tell me what I did wrong. tell me what I need to fix so that you would not be upset. please, talk to me, jimin. let me be by your side as I always did. I love you, forever.
— 19/01/2018
to my one and only jimin,
please take me back, I love you so much. please don't leave me all alone in this shared home of ours. it's too painful to see the memories of us, filled with happiness and joy. let me still call us, us. please, please come home and whisper sweet nothings like you used to, say that everything was all a prank. that you went overboard with the joke. please bring me into your embrace and stroke my back, tell me everything's alright, we're alright.
I love you, jimin, you know that right? I love you, forever.
yours
.
.
.
.
you know, I've always imagined us walking down the aisle as I take you in my hand and swear the oath to be each other's seasons, side by side all the way through our future days together. but sadly, all I could do now was clap for you, your happiness with your lover, staring at each other so lovingly on the pedestal. if you were happy, so would I be.
because I've always loved and will love you forever, my jimin.

Hadestown (in 4 Acts)
youtube
The invariable problem of being a Hadestown fan is deciding which soundtrack to have your friends listen to first. Each soundtrack has it's advantages, and with such drastic song & character & story differences between productions, the soundtrack you choose to show to a friend may lastingly shape what they think of the show. First impressions are everything.
Fan-compiled Spotify & YouTube playlists have been an answer to this problem, though a limited solution, as the show's story beats may not make sense when simply intercutting between the best versions of songs from different productions. Not to mention the best versions of some songs are not found on Spotify or any officially released soundtrack.
So, three years ago I made a fan edit of the soundtrack that included the lyrically best/most dramatically useful versions of each track (in my opinion) backdropped with minimalist visuals to help a new viewer understand the show's plot, aesthetic, and structure; cutting out certain small story beats to gel individual songs within the context of all other tracks used. The end product is a sum of parts that creates a new shape and whole to my fav broadway musical.
This is Hadestown (in 4 Acts), a semi-visual fan edit of the Hadestown soundtrack made with the intention of being the most accessible version of the show for someone who hasn't seen or listened to Hadestown before. This was made for you to send to your uninitiated friends, to be their first experience of the show.
Give it a listen and tell me what y'all think! 😊
(( i intended to publish this three years ago when i originally made the edit, but alassss, when i uploaded it to youtube the vid got an immediate copyright strike :\ figures. but !! i just discovered that at some point in the last three years the copyright strike was removed? idk why and i'm not gonna question it 😅. i'm pumped though to finally be sharing the edit [albeit three years late] !!!
i've thought in the years since about how i might make different editing choices [especially since the release of the west end soundtrack]. but unfortunately I lost the original premiere pro files on an old hard drive 😭💀😭 so this is sadly the final version. ))

Jikook Week 26 Complete ✔️(04/06 - 11/06/2024)
Their twenty sixth week in the military is now complete and time to celebrate this milestone with a look back at this week in 2018.

Festa 2018 opened on the 04/06 with the release of the Brit Rock Remix of Spring Day & the Fake Love (Rocking Vibe Mix) on Spotify.
On the same day BTS appeared on the SBS news and this interview was decidedly more friendly than the one with KBS in June 2017. The interviewer even breaks into a rhapsody about JK's talents which has JK AND Jimin (that's his baby you are talking about) thanking him for his appreciation.

On the 06/06 BTS released the GDA 2018 Dance Practice, as part of Festa 2018, with a set of DNA and Not Today. The synchronization and precision of the moves and the energy of their performance are unparalleled.
youtube
Every time I discover a new dance practice from the archive I am blown away by the intricacy of their choreography and how they truly work together as a team with each one giving 110%.

BTS were promoting Fake Love and the 07/06 marked another music show win. Overall Fake Love had 12 wins during its promo period.

They also did a fan sign event. Look at these two cuties.

Jikook posted about their 11th win at Music Core on 09/06/2018.

And on 10th June 2018, the day of their last music show win for Fake Love, all hell broke loose when Jimin posted this Jikook selca. It was ostensibly a tweet thanking ARMY for their support and he posts this. I think we should be thanking you Jimin. Let's face it, it was a statement. 2018, ladies and gentlemen, wild wild jikook times.

BLOG POST #8 - Due (04/10)
1. How does 2016 “Black Twitter” compare to black digital spaces today?
“Black Twitter” in 2016 loosely connected online cultural force. It helped amplify movements like #BlackLivesMatter, challenged media narratives, and created viral content rooted in shared cultural experiences. It was known for being fast, funny, politically sharp, and capable of sparking real-world conversations. Prof. Latoya Lee writes that Black Twitter pushed forth a “consciousness [which] encourages pride in blackness and stimulates communal responsibility among all people of color for one another and for the purpose of challenging implicit and explicit racial bias” (Lee, 7). Although there is more diversity among platforms in terms of black representation, there is far more censorship, algorithmic bias, and a renewed lack of spaces aimed to spread awareness on environmental issues.
2. What are ways people can organize socially today?
One form of technology that makes social organization possible are the use of hashtags, trends, and threads. Although they are not always political, they can be employed to further a political cause. Servers on streamings sites like Twitch and Discord can also allow for the ability of people to group together upon shared interests and hobbies. There are also pop up events where owners or coalitions can table people and get their name (or name of their causes) out. In the case of the #NODAPL movement, word spread as “evidenced through live video streaming, social media campaigns, Facebook check-ins, crowdsource funding, and posts to social media or blogs to share personal experiences and disseminate information” (Deschine Parkhurst, 38). Today, social media can be used as a tool (either positively or negatively) to push together like-minded individuals.
3. How are Indigenous peoples misrepresented in contemporary media?
Indigenous people are often misrepresented through stereotypes and inaccurate representations of their culture, traditions, and activities. The media also fails to educate the masses that we are on stolen land, and continues to dispossess Indigenous people of their land and practices.
4 How did the #NODAPL movement disrupt physical spaces?
Our guest speaker Nichole Deschine Parkhurst shed light on the No Dakota Access Pipeline movement and how the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe disrupted spaces through protest and occupations which blocked access to the pipelines, confrontations with police and banks, and gained national attention after a news reporter was maced in the face. “The #NoDAPL movement drew widespread intertribal, national, and international support and solidarity from organizations and various municipalities” (Deschine Parkhurst, 37). This widespread media coverage of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the #NoDAPL movement further disrupted, as it encouraged other tribes to stand in alliance or protest along the pipeline path for their own causes and resistances.
