So today was my first lesson! I wasn’t expecting to do terrible, but I wasn’t expecting to do too well, so I was pleasantly surprised when I didn’t, you know, fall on my ass.
We got there stupid early because me being me being paranoid about being late. My roommate came with me for moral support, and I was able to ask them to let her on the ice during my practice time even though she wasn’t on for lessons, too. There were, of course, lots of little kids skating circles around me, and it took a lot of purposeful thinking to not be discouraged by them. Even if there was one little show-off who kept making me feel realllllyyyy self-conscious.
There were a lot of little kids skating for the first time, too, though. Like, I couldn’t walk two feet without tripping over one of them lmao. But they were cute, skating out in all their helmets and knee pads, and I had this small tinge of jealousy almost? Because I so badly wanted to be them when I was that age. But I swallowed all that, because better late than never, right? No time like the present. And I wanted to have fun, by golly.
There were three in my class, Adult I, one in Adult II, and two in Adult III. The classes were split up into two 30 minute sessions, and mine was the first one. The little kids were using the center and the half of the ice closest to the doors, so we ended up using the far side of the ice.
Today we just focused on moving forward and getting used to the ice. We didn’t practice falling (which, I already know how to do because of Tang Soo Do), but we did do swizzles, half-swizzles, gliding, strokes, and crouches. And stopping. Did I mention I suck at snowplow stops? Because I suck at them. A lot. I can get going!! I just... can’t stop. Not without crashing into a wall anyway.
Then the lesson was up and we switched over to the other side, and my roommate got to skate with me while I practiced what I learned. We didn’t stay all the way through the end of the session, left about 10 minutes early because my feet were starting to go numb by that point lmao. I’m actually surprised my feet aren’t bruised?? Just kinda sore from being all squished.
All in all, I’m very pleased with how the first day went! I think I’m gonna look into some open free skating places a little closer so I can practice during the week too. I really need to work on that snowplow stop lol. The instructor made it look so dang easy....
