[Yuzuru Hanyu] reflects on completing his degree in Human Information Science from Waseda University last month, and how it could help him on the ice as well as in life.Hanyu explored digital data and 3D motion capture in relation to movement on the ice (including his own jumping passes), studies that he aims to apply to his own programs moving forward."I've been walking in the world of figure skating, but I wanted to see myself expressed in numbers and data. From the start, I’ve been interested in psychology, such as cognitive and clinical psychology, as well as the human nervous system and sensory system, I usually read a lot of books on these topics. Recently, I’ve also been reading up on the topic of “sleep” from books and on the internet, and checking out books on how to use the human body and on self care. Probably because I’ve been thinking a lot about things like tension and relaxation since I was young, such topics are closer to heart. Plus, in my case, I also have plenty of opportunities to put what I’ve read from books into practice through skating.

Through combining my cumulative experiences and what I’ve learned from books and school, I’ve also come upon my own revelations. Learning about the scientific basis for things that, up until now, I have intuitively felt and phenomena that I have noticed, and being able to back that up [through my own experience]––that is really interesting. (2)

[Chen] had always had planned to spend these two years focused on finishing school, regardless of a win at the 2022 Olympics (and working with superstars). "I try not to think too much about the future, and that's honestly the kind of the way that I'm going about it."
