Trong 7 tháng đầu năm 2019, Kia Morning dù vẫn xuất hiện trong top 10 xe bán chạy nhất thị trường nhưng tần suất đã không còn ổn định như trước. Cụ thể, 2 tháng đầu năm, mẫu xe cỡ nhỏ của Hàn tiếp tục góp mặt ở vị trí quen thuộc của top 10. Ở chiều ngược lại, Kia Optima là đại diện duy nhất của hãng xe Hàn liên tục xuất hiện trong top xe bán ế. Tính đến thời điểm hiện tại, doanh số của Optima đạt trung bình ở mức 50-60 xe/tháng. Kết thúc 7 tháng đầu năm 2019, doanh số của Optima chỉ dừng lại ở 395 xe.

Điều này có thể dễ hiểu khi trong phân khúc D, Kia Optima không phải là lựa chọn hàng đầu khi có sự hiện diện của Mazda 6 và Toyota Camry. 

Trong khi đó, các mẫu xe còn lại của Kia như Sedona, Sorento hay Rondo lại không thực sự nổi bật tại thị trường Việt Nam. Đây có thể là bước chững lại của Kia tại thị trường Việt Nam. Tuy vậy, Kia sẽ không rơi vào tình cảnh ế ẩm như Suzuki, bởi Morning hay Cerato vẫn luôn có một bộ phận khách hàng lớn. 

Song, Kia Việt Nam cần phải thực hiện những thay đổi về chiến lược kinh doanh để duy trì, thậm chí đẩy mạnh doanh số của hãng, điển hình là việc nhanh chóng đưa Kia Monring thế hệ mới về nước. Điều này sẽ giúp Morning củng cố vị trí của mình trong một phân khúc đầy nhân tố mới như phân khúc A.

Kia Morning 2021, Honda City 2020, Mazda 6… là những mẫu xe đời mới được mong chờ ra mắt khách hàng Việt trong sáu tháng cuối năm.

Những mẫu xe đã ra mắt công chúng toàn cầu và cần được đưa về Việt Nam để làm mới dải sản phẩm của mình, gia tăng thêm sự lựa chọn cho người dùng trong nước.

Theo một số nguồn tin, THACO đang có kế hoạch ra mắt phiên bản hoàn toàn mới của mẫu hatchback đô thị Kia Morning tại thị trường Việt Nam. Kia Morning 2020 vừa mới ra mắt tại Hàn Quốc là model nâng cấp giữa dòng đời của thế hệ Morning thứ 3. Trong khi đó, các phiên bản Morning đang lắp ráp và bán tại Việt Nam thuộc thế hệ thứ 2 ra đời từ 2011.

Kia Morning 2021 có những thay đổi về ngoại hình mang đến cái nhìn cuốn hút hơn. Ở phần đầu xe, đèn pha, cản dưới và mặt ca-lăng mới góc là những chi tiết được tinh chỉnh lại. Bên cạnh đó, xe cũng được trang bị sẵn đèn định vị ban ngày dạng LED, mâm xe thể thao… Vóc dáng tổng thể, Kia Morning 2021 không có sự khác biệt so với phiên bản tiền nhiệm.

Morning 2021 dự kiến sẽ tiếp tục sử dụng động cơ xăng I3 1.0L với công suất 66 mã lực và 96 Nm mô-men xoắn cực đại. Ngoài ra, sẽ có thêm một biến thể động cơ I4 1.25L với 83 mã lực và 122 Nm mô-men xoắn cao cấp hơn.

Trải qua nhiều năm có mặt trên thị trường cùng nhiều lần nâng cấp đáng kể, lần nâng cấp gần nhất của mẫu xe hạng A này là vào năm 2018 với việc ra mắt phiên bản Morning S. Còn hiện tại, Kia Morning có 4 phiên bản với giá bán dao động 299-393 triệu. Dự đoán Kia Morning 2020 khi ra mắt tại Việt Nam vẫn sẽ được lắp ráp như các phiên bản hiện hành.

Năm ngoái, có tin đồn Corolla Altis thế hệ mới chuẩn bị ra mắt tại Việt Nam nhưng ngay lập tức Toyota đã lên tiếng phủ nhận thông tin đó. Vì thế, khách hàng Việt phải đợi thêm một năm nữa mới có thể tiếp cận Toyota Corolla Altis 2020.

Toyota Corolla Altis có mức giá dao động từ 679 đến 932 triệu, là đối thủ cạnh tranh với: Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra hay Kia Cerato… Tuy nhiên mẫu xe này đang cho thấy sự lép vế so với các đối thủ vì bởi giá cao và thiết kế, trang bị đã lâu không được nâng cấp. Do đó, việc sớm ra mắt phiên bản hoàn toàn mới, có thể giúp mẫu sedan hạng C này cải thiện được doanh số và chỗ đứng của mình trong phân khúc.

Thế hệ thứ 12 của Corolla Altis là một chiếc xe hoàn toàn mới khi được xây dựng trên nền tảng Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-C, cũng đang dùng cho Prius và C-HR. Xe có kích thước dài x rộng x cao lần lượt là 4.640 x 1.780 x 1.435 mm. Như vậy, Altis mới dài hơn 10mm, rộng hơn 5mm và thấp hơn 45mm so với mẫu Altis tiền nhiệm.

Nhiều khả năng Altis 2020 sẽ tiếp tục được phân phối chính hãng tại thị trường Việt Nam theo dạng nhập khẩu nguyên chiếc từ Thái Lan.

Honda City

Về thiết kế tổng thể, Honda City 2020 chịu ảnh hưởng khá nhiều từ đàn anh Accord thế hệ mới. Đường nét thiết kế mềm mại hơn và tuân theo phong cách đĩnh đạc, lịch sự, sang trọng nhưng vẫn thời trang.

Một số trang bị nổi bật phải kể tới như bộ đèn chiếu sáng công nghệ Full-LED cho bản cao cấp, đèn halogen cùng thấu kính projector cho bản tiêu chuẩn, bộ mâm hợp kim 15 inch đa chấu, ăng-ten vây cá mập, màn hình cảm ứng 8 inch có kết nối điện thoại thông minh Apple CarPlay và hỗ trợ ra lệnh giọng nói Siri, hệ thống giải trí MID, điều hoà tự động, vô-lăng kèm phím bấm đa chức năng, kết nối Bluetooth rảnh tay, ghế bằng vải hoặc hai tông màu da với bảng điều khiển màu đen bóng piano, tay nắm cửa mạ chrome…

Tại thị trường Thái Lan, tất cả các phiên bản của Honda City 2020 đều sử dụng chung một khối động cơ xăng 3 xy-lanh VTEC Turbo 1.0L cho ra công suất 120 mã lực và 173 Nm mô-men xoắn cực đại tại vòng tua 2.000-4.500 vòng/phút. Honda cho biết động cơ mới này cho cùng hiệu năng với phiên bản 1.5 cũ và cùng mô-men xoắn với động cơ 1.8L. Bên cạnh đó, xe đi kèm với trang bị hộp số vô cấp CVT với cài đặt giả lập 7 cấp số.

Honda City là dòng xe duy nhất được Honda sản xuất tại Việt Nam. Tuy nhiên vẫn chưa rõ hãng xe Nhật sẽ duy trì việc lắp ráp cho City thế hệ mới hay chuyển sang nhập khẩu tương tự Civic hay Accord. Giá bán của Honda City 2020 tại Thái Lan là từ 579.500 đến 739.000 Baht (tương đương 444 đến 567 triệu đồng).

Well long story shortit’s a very solid performer. Up front is a 1. 8 litre turbochargeddirect-injection petrol engine making 180 PS and 250 Nm of torquethat is a full 20 PS more than old B7 Passat and 5 more than the Honda Accord 2. 4Sending power to the front wheels is a 7-speed dry dual clutch DSG transmissionNow, dry dual-clutch may set off some alarms to some people but Volkswagen Malaysiainsists that it has solved any issues with the systemTo drive, this is as good as ever – DSG is still the very best in thebusiness when it comes to dual-clutch transmissions, offering smooth and quickgear changes – this is much better than anything else that other brands withsimilar transmissions can offer. Tell you what, this is much better thanMercedes-Benz’s wet dual-clutch transmission by a big, big marginMost of the time, DSG feels like a really good torque converter automatic, and that’s a good thingit’s only when you’re going really slowly, when you’re pulling off fromstandstill that there’s a little bit of hesitancy from the throttle – this can geta little bit annoying at times but after a few days you’ll get used to ityou’ll just compensate with earlier pedal inputsOther than that the engine and transmission combo is excellentOn full throttle it gets from 0 to 100 in just under 8 seconds – for a big car like thisthat is rapid. There’s almost zero need to use paddle shifters or even the sport modebecause even the normal driving mode is good enough, quick enoughresponsive enough for all your driving inputsThe thing is though while the engine is more than happy to serve up high speedsthe chassis is less happy doing soIt’s just not set up that way. The steering especially can feel alittle bit light especially off-center when you’re going hard through cornersso you’re not going to feel 100% confident from behind the wheel buthaving said that grip levels are excellentso it’s certainly safe and competent just not a lot of funThe Passat is a lot more enjoyable when you’re taking it easy, and at a cruise it’s oh so comfortableand the engine is very quiet – barely ticking over at 2,000 rpm whenyou’re going 110 km/h. If there’s a complaint, there’s just a little bit toomuch road noise from the tyres that spoils the experience a little bit butother than that it’s fantastic! Toyota has called it a day bringing an end to more than 50 years of local manufacturing in Australia.

Some 3000 people gathered at a ceremony at the Altona production plant in Melbourne to mark the occasion including current and former employees, suppliers, affiliate companies and officials from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan.

From now on it means that any Toyota you buy in Australia will not have been built in Australia – it will be an import.

Toyota Australia boss Dave Buttner paid tribute to employees past and present for their ongoing commitment to ensuring the goal of ‘last car = best global car’.

Mr Buttner assured those who had lost their jobs because of the closure that the company continue to support them beyond today.

As a result of consolidation and the cessation of manufacturing, the total number of people employed by the company will be cut from 3900 people to approximately 1300 – in other words about 2600 people will lose their jobs.

“When we launched the DRIVE program in 2014, its purpose was to ensure you are all in the best possible position to find a new job in the future,” he said.

“These services will remain until the middle of next year.”

The company chose the occasion to announce the creation of the Toyota Community Trust, $32 million endowment fund, unveiled by Toyota Australia Chairman Max Yasuda during the closure ceremony.

The trust is designed to provide long-term benefits to the Australian community, in particular helping young Australians realise their potential.

Toyota plans to consolidate most of its operations to the Altona site, with the relocation of key business units and the development of a Centre of Excellence.

Mr Buttner said Altona would house expanded design and engineering capabilities, with a 150-strong team that is in great demand by Toyota affiliates around the globe.

“The Centre of Excellence will include a world-class training facility and other commercial initiatives that will enhance the company’s business and the community, he said.

Global President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyoda, visited the Altona plant in August.

Today, via video, he once again expressed his gratitude for a job well done.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation again to you, our dedicated employees, our suppliers, our customers, the local community and government who have all supported Toyota’s manufacturing development in Australia,” he said.

“From the bottom of my heart I wish you and your families happiness in the future. Thank you very much.”

As part of Toyota Australia’s transition to a national sales and distribution company, the consolidation of all corporate functions from Sydney to Melbourne will take effect by January 1, 2018.

The head office will continue to be based in Port Melbourne and most of the Altona manufacturing site will be retained for new and relocated functions.

Ô tô giảm giá cả trăm triệu đồng vẫn không 'đắt hàng'

Xe Nhật, Đức đều giảm cả trăm triệu đồng

Liên tiếp 8 tháng (từ tháng 11/2016 đến nay), cuộc đua giảm giá ô tô tại thị trường Việt Nam chưa có dấu hiệu "hạ nhiệt". Tiên phong và duy trì đều việc giảm giá xe phải kể đến Cty CP ô tô Trường Hải (Thaco) với 3 thương hiệu Mazda, Kia và Peugeot từ vài chục triệu đồng đến gần 200 triệu đồng.

Giữa tháng 5/2017, đại diện Thaco từng tuyên bố, giá xe Mazda sản xuất lắp ráp trong nước đã giảm tới đáy, không thể giảm hơn được nữa, nếu có chỉ do các đại lý tự thực hiện. Thế nhưng, mới đầu tháng 6, Thaco lại công bố giảm từ 30-40 triệu đồng cho mẫu Mazda CX5.

Hyundai Thành Công (HTC) cũng đưa ra chương trình ưu đãi với 2 mẫu đang bán chạy là SantaFe (giảm 50-70 triệu đồng) và Elantra (giảm 40-50 triệu đồng) trong tháng 6 này. Từ 15/6, HTC cũng giảm giá bán mẫu xe Tucson 20 triệu đồng cùng bộ phụ kiện đi kèm trị giá 30 triệu đồng. Nếu không nhận phụ kiện, tổng mức ưu đãi lên tới 40 triệu đồng.

Trong số các hãng xe của Nhật, Mitsubishi Việt Nam cũng giảm giá 50 - 106 triệu đồng cho hai mẫu Pajero Sport, giảm 90 triệu đồng cho mẫu Outlander; 60 triệu đồng cho Triton và giảm 50 triệu đồng đối với mẫu Mirage.

 Honda Việt Nam giảm giá lên tới 150 triệu đồng cho bản CR-V 2.4AT cơ bản và 100 triệu đồng cho CR-V 2.4 AT-TG. Mẫu xe Civic Turbo cũng được giảm 50 triệu đồng cho khách hàng khi mua xe từ 5/6.

Cũng trong tháng 6 này, Nissan Việt Nam ưu đãi từ 10-20 triệu đồng và tặng bộ định vị AVN cùng bộ thảm sàn cho khách hàng mua xe X-Trail; ưu đãi từ 5-30 triệu đồng hoặc tặng nắp thùng trị giá 30 triệu đồng cho khách mua mẫu Navara; 5 triệu đồng hoặc các phụ kiện cho Sunny XV (phiên bản số tự động – AT); 10-20 triệu đồng cho mẫu Teana.

Một doanh nghiệp khác là GM Việt Nam cũng ưu đãi đến 70 triệu đồng cho khách hàng mua mẫu Cruze bản LTZ và mẫu Colorado bản 2.8L 4x4 AT LTZ; 50 triệu đồng cho mẫu Cruze LT; 30 triệu đồng cho bản Colorado 4x4 MT LTZ; và ưu đãi 20 triệu đồng hai bản Colorado 2.5L 4x4 và 4x2 MT.

Là hãng ít khi có những chương trình khuyến mãi, giảm giá, song trong bối cảnh hiện nay, Toyota Việt Nam cũng không thể đứng ngoài cuộc. Tháng 6, công ty này đã tung ra chương trình "khuyến mãi khủng", tặng gói bảo dưỡng định kỳ 3 năm, hoặc 60.000 km cho khách hàng mua xe. Trên thị trường, giá tất cả các mẫu xe do Toyota Việt Nam phân phối đều giảm mạnh. Camry giảm từ 95-120 triệu đồng, Altis giảm 55-70 triệu đồng, Innova giảm từ 65-70 triệu đồng, tùy từng phiên bản.

Trong cuộc đua giảm giá, để cạnh tranh với dòng xe nhập từ ASEAN và xe sản xuất lắp ráp tại Việt Nam, các hãng xe đến từ châu Âu như Touareg, Polo, Peugeot đến Volvo…cũng không thể đứng ngoài cuộc. Bất ngờ nhất là Volkswagen Việt Nam có mức giảm giá khủng lên tới 260 triệu đồng cho mẫu SUV Touareg. Đây là dòng xe sang, động cơ 3.6L, hộp số 8 cấp, trang bị nhiều công nghệ hiện đại.  

Volkswagen Việt Nam cũng giảm giá từ 50-80 triệu đồng cho xe Polo sedan và Polo hatchback nhằm cạnh tranh với các mẫu xe của Nhật đang bán chạy ở phân khúc Sedan hạng B như Toyota Vios, Honda City. Ngay lập tức, giữa tháng 6 vừa qua, Toyota liền tung ra Vios TRD 2017 mới với giá bán 664 triệu đồng, Honda tung City 2017 với giá bán từ 568-604 triệu đồng tùy phiên bản để khách hàng thêm nhiều lựa chọn.

Hãng xe sang Volvo cũng đưa ra chương trình tặng 12% lệ phí trước bạ cho khách mua mẫu xe XC 60, tương đương với 228 triệu đồng. Ngoài ra, khách hàng khi mua 2 mẫu xe khác của hãng là XC90 và S90 sẽ được tặng bảo hiểm thân vỏ, ốp gỗ nội thất và tiền mặt khoảng 30-50 triệu đồng.

Người tiêu dùng liệu có mua được xe giá rẻ?

Thực tế cho thấy, việc các doanh nghiệp tung chiêu giảm giá, khuyến mãi kích cầu phần nào giúp doanh số bán hàng của toàn thị trường ô tô Việt Nam trong tháng 5/2017 tăng 6% so với tháng 4, tăng 11% so với cùng kỳ năm 2016. Theo số liệu do Hiệp hội các nhà sản xuất ô tô Việt Nam (VAMA), doanh số tháng 5/2017 đạt 23.232 xe. Tuy nhiên, tính chung 5 tháng đầu năm, doanh số toàn thị trường ôtô Việt Nam chỉ đạt 109.903 xe, giảm 1% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái.

Chuyên gia kinh tế Ngô Trí Long nhận định, các doanh nghiệp giảm giá xe nhằm cạnh tranh với xe nhập khẩu từ ASEAN được ưu đãi thuế, nhất là thời điểm 2018 đang cận kề. Giá xe sẽ còn giảm xong người tiêu dùng vẫn không thể mua được xe giá rẻ hơn so với các nước khu vực.

Nguyên nhân, theo ông Long hạ tầng giao thông ở Việt Nam kém phát triển nên nhà nước vẫn đưa ra nhiều giải pháp tăng phí trước bạ, đánh thuế nhập khẩu, thuế tiêu thụ đặc biệt nhằm giảm ách tắc, ùn tắc giao thông, đặc biệt là ở 2 thành phố lớn Hà Nội và TP.HCM…

Thứ hai, thu nhập của người dân chưa cao, do đó tâm lý chờ đợi vẫn tiếp diễn, nhất là khi chỉ còn 6 tháng nữa tới năm 2018. Ngoài ra, chi phí mua linh kiện để sản xuất, lắp ráp ở trong nước vẫn cao. Do đó, theo ông Long, người tiêu dùng vẫn không thể mua được xe giá rẻ thực sự, bằng các nước khu vực cũng đã khó.

Từ những lý do trên, chuyên gia Ngô Trí Long cho rằng, thị trường ôtô Việt Nam trong thời gian tới khó có tăng trưởng tốt.

Vừa qua, công ty tư vấn chiến lược và tiếp thị chuyên về thị trường châu Á Solidiance công bố những số liệu khảo sát về thị trường ô tô Việt Nam. Theo đó, tỉ lệ tăng trưởng kép hằng năm của thị trường ô tô Việt Nam đạt 38% tính từ năm 2012 – 2016. Việt Nam đang là thị trường ô tô có tốc độ tăng trưởng nhanh nhất trong khu vực Đông Nam Á.

Lượng ô tô được tiêu thụ nhiều nhất ở Việt Nam là tại hai thành phố lớn: Hà Nội và TP.HCM, chiếm khoảng 45% tổng lượng xe được đăng ký tại Việt Nam hàng năm. Dù vậy, tỉ lệ sở hữu ô tô của Việt Nam chỉ ở mức 16 xe/1.000 dân. Con số này thấp hơn nhiều nếu so với tỉ lệ người dân sở hữu ô tô tại Malaysia (341 xe/1.000 dân), Thái Lan (196 xe/1.000 dân) và Indonesia (55 xe/1.000 dân).

 Solidiance cũng có dự báo với tốc độ tăng trưởng như hiện nay, thị trường ô tô Việt Nam sẽ đạt doanh số khoảng 225.000 chiếc vào năm 2020.

The D-segment sedan market is very competitive in Malaysia, with so many options to choose fromThe Volkswagen Passat however is pretty much the only European option with a mainstream appealnext to the usual Japanese suspectsWe’ve already compared the top-spec 2. 0 litre model against more premium rivals inour Driven Web Series, and it fared quite well there. Here we have the 1. 8 litre TSIwhich is priced more closely towards the likes of the Honda Accord and Toyota CamryThis 1. 8 TSI Comfortline Plus retails for RM186kThat’s about 10% more than comparable models such as the Accord 2. 4 and Camry 2. 5 HybridBut with rebates, low interest rates and free service packages offeredby Volkswagen, you may be surprised how affordable this can be next to the Japanese optionsThere’s also the 1. 8 litre Trendline version for just over RM160kBut if you’re looking for a Passat, you should at leastgo for the Comfortline because this adds on quite a few itemsMost important visually are the full LED headlamps instead of lame reflectors on the low-spec modelplus prettier 18-inch alloy wheels on this Plus modelComfortline trim also adds on keyless entry, powered leather seats, cruise control, reverse cameraand a powered boot – all of which are absolute essentials in this classOne of the Passat’s key design features is how well it hides its bulkAt almost 4. 8 meters, it’s almost as long as a Toyota Camry and Honda Accordbut it doesn’t really look all that big does it?And the wheelbase – that’s even longer than both of those carsFor such a long car I think this is a very handsome, very elegantly styled carIt may not have the extra boldness of say the Mazda 6 and the Kia Optimabut this is the more classy approach – very classically VolkswagenMoving inside you get a clean and neat dashboard design, precisely as you’d expectfrom the German carmaker – there’s very little flash but it’s full of substanceVolkswagen has really nailed the ergonomics of this car – all the majorcontrols are exactly where you want them to be, the touchscreen here has excellentvery easy to use interface and the aircon controls are very logically arrangedThe same goes for the driving position too – the level of adjustments available hereis the best in class, so you can get really comfortable behind the wheelAs for the seats themselves, they are quite hard, very Germanic, but it’s very wellshaped, very supportive for long journeys. It also has powered lumbar adjustment anda memory function, which are not commonly found in this class. There’s a massagefunction too but to be honest it’s one of those gimmicks that you’ll try once and never use againBuild quality is one of Volkswagen’s key strengths and thePassat is a very good example of that – in terms of perceived quality this getscloser to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class than it is to the Honda AccordThe whole top of the dashboard is finished in this plush soft touch material and fit and finishis absolutely faultless. But of course as you get lower the plastics get harderas you can see here, but at least they’ve kept the cheap hard plastics to a minimumOn the downside this variant doesn’t get the full LCD Active Info Displaythat’s on the Passat 2. 0 and Tiguan Highline models, and while thehead unit does support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the blurry reverse cameradisplay should really be better than this! On Comfortline models and up you getVolkswagen’s Park Assist which supports parallel, perpendicular and even forward-in parkingBut the thing is it really takes its own sweet time and if youreally have a big problem parking a car with all-around sensors and a reverse cameramaybe you should just consider using Uber/Grab insteadAs for rear passengers, you get a lot of space – it’s absolutely massive back here and theseats themselves are very well shaped but more for two rather than threeYou can also control the temperature back here but not the fan speedOn the other hand, you don’t get side window blinds like in most of its rivals and even the rearsunshade is missing on this model. So you’re gotta be sitting in the back heremore than in front there are better options elsewhereThe boot however is humongous at 586 litres – that’s the biggest inclass by far, around 30% larger than its Japanese rivals and that’s with afull-size spare tyre available under the floor too which makes it even more impressiveAs for safety the Passat has a full 5-star EuroNCAP rating, six airbagsand ESC but unfortunately it’s short on active safety features like theHonda Sensing Suite on the AccordSo after all that, what’s the new Passat like to drive? Well long story shortit’s a very solid performer. Up front is a 1. 8 litre turbochargeddirect-injection petrol engine making 180 PS and 250 Nm of torquethat is a full 20 PS more than old B7 Passat and 5 more than the Honda Accord 2. 4Sending power to the front wheels is a 7-speed dry dual clutch DSG transmissionNow, dry dual-clutch may set off some alarms to some people but Volkswagen Malaysiainsists that it has solved any issues with the systemTo drive, this is as good as ever – DSG is still the very best in thebusiness when it comes to dual-clutch transmissions, offering smooth and quickgear changes – this is much better than anything else that other brands withsimilar transmissions can offer. Tell you what, this is much better thanMercedes-Benz’s wet dual-clutch transmission by a big, big marginMost of the time, DSG feels like a really good torque converter automatic, and that’s a good thingit’s only when you’re going really slowly, when you’re pulling off fromstandstill that there’s a little bit of hesitancy from the throttle – this can geta little bit annoying at times but after a few days you’ll get used to ityou’ll just compensate with earlier pedal inputsOther than that the engine and transmission combo is excellentOn full throttle it gets from 0 to 100 in just under 8 seconds – for a big car like thisthat is rapid. There’s almost zero need to use paddle shifters or even the sport modebecause even the normal driving mode is good enough, quick enoughresponsive enough for all your driving inputsThe thing is though while the engine is more than happy to serve up high speedsthe chassis is less happy doing soIt’s just not set up that way. Very few D-segment sedans are tuned to be fun to drive andthis is certainly not one of them. The Passat favours comfort over handling andin this case that is not a bad thing. The steering especially can feel alittle bit light especially off-center when you’re going hard through cornersso you’re not going to feel 100% confident from behind the wheel buthaving said that grip levels are excellentso it’s certainly safe and competent just not a lot of funThe Passat is a lot more enjoyable when you’re taking it easy, and at a cruise it’s oh so comfortableand the engine is very quiet – barely ticking over at 2,000 rpm whenyou’re going 110 km/h. If there’s a complaint, there’s just a little bit toomuch road noise from the tyres that spoils the experience a little bit butother than that it’s fantastic! So on the whole refinement is reallyreally good and you’ll struggle to find a better car in this class to eat up the miles inAs a D-segment sedan, that’s much more important than driving fun, don’t you think?There you have it, the Volkswagen Passat 1. 8 in Malaysia – overall it’s a verysolid performer on the move and it has a very premium and practical interior insideIf you’re looking for a classy D-segment sedan with Europeansophistication should definitely consider this oneSo over to you would you buy this car over a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry orthe Nissan Teana?
