Details: The New Audi A3 Sedan
The second generation of an Audi success story is here – the A3 Sedan. The compact four-door model is digitally and fully connected – from the infotainment through to the assist systems. Beneath the body, new drives and refined suspension tuning ensure a driving experience that is as efficient & dynamic. 
Powerful and elegant: The exterior The front is dominated by a large Singleframe with honeycomb grille that is flanked by striking headlights. On the outside, they form trapezoidal angles that are drawn downward. In the top model with Matrix LED technology, this is where the new digital daytime running lights are housed. They consist of a pixel array made up of 15 LED segments that can be actuated individually and give the various versions of the A3 Sedan a specific signature.
With the A3 Sportback, the body line running above the sill rises towards the rear lights before the rear wheel arch, thus accentuating the short rear end. The body line on the Sedan, by contrast, extends up to the rear bumper. This emphasizes its length – 15 centimeters (5.9 in) longer than the Sportback – and gives the flank an elegant appearance. The concave surface under the broad body shoulder further accentuates the quattro blisters and the sill. This creates an intensive play of light and shadow. The roof line slopes down from the B-pillar dynamically – just like on a coupé – and finishes in a striking spoiler on the tailgate. Optionally available in carbon, this provides a visual accent and, in so doing, emphasizes the powerful appearance of the four-door model.
Streamlined body The aerodynamics benefit from the higher rear end compared with the predecessor as well as the large diffuser. As a result, the new A3 Sedan with the 2.0 TDI 110 kW (150 PS) achieves a Cd value of 0.25 and is therefore 0.04 Cd points better than the first generation. The controllable cooling-air inlet with two electrically actuated louver modules behind the Singleframe also contribute to this. They regulate the flow of air intelligently and according to the situation. In addition, the paneled underbody, the exterior mirrors with improved aerodynamics, and the active brake cooling reduce air resistance and make for a streamlined vehicle.
Focused and digitalized: The cockpit The cockpit of the A3 Sedan is entirely focused on the driver. This begins with the interior design and ends with the display and control elements. Thus, the instrument panel with the central MMI touch display is inclined slightly toward the driver. It has a 10.1-inch diagonal and is intuitive to operate. As standard, it includes handwriting detection as well as natural language control that can optionally draw on the capabilities of the cloud. The 10.25-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel is digital even in the basic model. As the Audi virtual cockpit plus, it measures 12.3 inches and offers three different views, including sporty graphics with inclined digits and a particularly dynamic layout. The RPM and speed are shown here as bar diagrams with angular red graphical elements. Upon request, a head-up display complements the display concept, whereby it projects important information onto the windshield in the driver’s direct field of vision. Highly connected: From infotainment to driver assistance The top infotainment system in the new A3 Sedan is the MMI Navigation plus, which uses the third-generation modular infotainment platform (MIB 3). The MIB 3 boasts computing power ten times higher than in the predecessor model, connects the car via LTE Advanced speed, and connects the smartphones of the passengers to the Internet via Wi-Fi hotspot. The MMI Navigation plus offers a multitude of Audi connect services as standard, including online traffic information, news, and additional information such as photos, opening times, and user reviews relating to points of interest.
Car-to-X services that make use of the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet are also part of the portfolio. They report hazardous areas or speed limits, for example, to vehicles with the corresponding equipment or find free parking spaces at the side of the road. If the car is switched off, the myAudi app continues navigation from the car on a smartphone. This way, customers reaches their destination directly.
The A3 Sedan is also connected to the smartphone via the Audi smartphone interface, which integrates iOS and Android cell phones with Apple Car Play and Android Auto in the MMI, as well as via Audi phone box. The latter connects the device to the car antenna and can charge it inductively. What is more, the A3 Sedan can be locked and unlocked as well as started via an Android smartphone with the Audi connect key. Personalization allows up to six users to store their preferred settings in individual profiles, including those for the seat, climate control and media. The DAB+ digital radio comes as standard. Options include online radio and the hybrid radio, which automatically switches between FM, DAB, and the online stream depending on a station’s signal strength, thus ensuring optimum reception. Beginning in the middle of the year, the Amazon Alexa voice assistant will complement the offering.
The driver assist systems are also particularly effective thanks to the close networking. In the Audi pre sense front system, the camera behind the interior mirror works together with the front radar to prevent accidents, or at least reduce their severity. The standard collision avoidance assist also uses the data from this sensor system. Adaptive cruise assist, an innovation from the full-size class, supports drivers with longitudinal and lateral guidance. The efficiency assist notifies them when it would be sensible to take their foot off the accelerator. To do so, it evaluates information including the navigation data. The exit warning, the cross-traffic assist and the surround view cameras that will follow shortly after the market launch are also useful in in urban traffic.
Three engines at ramp-up: The drives
The new A3 Sedan is available with a choice of two TFSI engines and one TDI engine at launch. One thing they all have in common is high efficiency. The 35 TFSI, a 1.5-liter direct injection engine, produces 110 kW (150 PS) and is available in two versions – with a newly developed six-speed manual transmission (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.0 – 4.7 (47.0 – 50.0 US mpg)*; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 114 – 108 (183.5 – 173.8 g/mi)*) and with a quick-shifting seven-speed S tronic (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 4.9 – 4.7 (48.0 – 50.0 US mpg)*; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 113 – 107 (181.9 – 172.2 g/mi)*).
Besides the cylinder on demand technology, the powertrain in conjunction with the S tronic dual-clutch transmission uses a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It recovers energy during deceleration, supports the engine with up to 50 Nm (36.9 lb-ft) of torque when driving off and accelerating from low engine speeds and allows the A3 Sedan to coast with the engine switched off in many situations. In everyday driving, it reduces consumption by up to 0.4 liters (0.1 US gal) per 100 kilometers (62.1 mi).
The 2.0 TDI with 110 kW (150 PS) (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 3.9 – 3.6 (60.3 – 65.3 US mpg)*; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 101 – 96 (162.5 – 154.5 g/mi)*) also works in conjunction with a seven-speed S tronic, whereby gear shifts are performed via a new switch using shift-by-wire technology.
Comfortable and dynamic at once: The suspension The suspension of the new A3 Sedan has been tuned to be sporty and harmonious – a touch more precise than in the predecessor model. To a large degree, this precision and reaction speed is thanks to the central dynamic handling system that ensures optimal interaction between all the components relevant to the transverse dynamics. As an alternative to the standard setup, there is a sport suspension and a suspension with controlled dampers. The latter offers a wide spread between highly comfortable roll motion and agile handling. The Audi drive select dynamic handling system also allows the driver to experience different levels of suspension tuning in their A3 Sedan – from comfort-oriented and distinctly dynamic right through to particularly fuel-efficient. This also brings about changes in the characteristics of the throttle response and the progressive steering, for example, which varies its ratio depending on the steering angle.
Prices and market launch Presales of the new A3 Sedan will begin at the end of April 2020 in Germany and many other European markets. Deliveries will commence in the summer. Prices for the 35 TFSI with 110 kW (150 PS) start at EUR 29,800. Shortly after the market launch, an entry-level gasoline engine will follow with a list price of EUR 27,700.

Last week, we compared the Mercedes-Benz A220 to the Toyota Camry XLE V6, and most of you thought I'd lost my mind. I (pre-) explained why I hadn't, but of course the social media reaction was predictably short on folks who had read beyond the headline. So, for those of you who do manage to actually read an article before forming an opinion about it, I offer up an even more affordable take on making the step from a premium mainstream car to a mainstream premium car in the form of the 2020 Audi A3 Premium 45 TFSI quattro S-tronic. For those of you reacting on social media without having read even this far: Yawn. Uninformed opinions are so 2016.
You know the drill: To the specs!
Camry XSE V6 Vs. Audi A3 Premium 45 TFSI: Where The Audi Comes Up Short The first thing you'll probably notice is that there are no extra options added to either car's base price for their respective trim levels. In the case of the 2020 Toyota Camry, the XSE V6 already has a lot of optional-for-lower-tier-models equipment as standard; ticking the available options boxes would have increased the price well above that of the A3, and we're trying to keep things at less than $40,000. In the 2020 A3's case, the upgrade to the 45 TFSI trim level, which brings with it quattro all-wheel drive, put the price just about on par with the top-level Camry's, so I decided to keep it even-steven and just go with each vehicle's standard specification.
As with the Mercedes A220, the Camry seems to handily trounce the A3 if you're only looking at power figures, but this time the Audi out-scoots the Toyota thanks to its combination of turbo torque and quattro all-wheel drive, as well as its slightly lighter curb weight, hitting 60 mph from rest in just 5.4 seconds, 0.4-second quicker than the Camry's 5.8-second time.
The Audi is more expensive, but it's only 3.8 percent more expensive. Otherwise, the Camry's only real advantage over the A3 on the spec sheet is its size—and again, the Audi A3 is closer to the Camry than the Mercedes A220 was, both in terms of interior space and trunk space. The Camry XSE V6 packs 42.1 inches of front and 38.0 inches of rear leg room into its 111.2-inch wheelbase, compared to the Audi A3 Premium's 41.2/35.1 inches of front/rear leg room on a 103.8-inch wheelbase. The A3's trunk offers a relatively generous 10.0-cubic-feet of storage, 16 percent more than the A220, but still only about two-thirds the volume of the Camry's capacious 15.1-cubic-foot trunk.
It's clear the A3 is a smaller car, but aside from rear-seat leg room and a bit of trunk space, you're really not giving up that much to the Camry in terms of daily space unless you regularly have two or more other people in your car. If you do regularly have several occupants, it's worth keeping in mind the fact the Camry scores five stars across the board in NHTSA crash testing, while the 2020 A3 scores a five-star overall rating, but with four-star frontal-offset and rollover-crash results.

Audi A3 Premium 45 TFSI: Where The Audi Comes Out On Top As with the Mercedes, aside from size, the Audi comes out on top in pretty much every other category, most notably in terms of interior design and styling. The Camry's no penalty box—quite the contrary, actually; it's a reasonably good-looking, nicely trimmed space—but there's no doubt you're driving a Toyota, however nice. In the A3, you get a taste of how the few-percenters live, with many of the same styling cues and details found in Audi's $60,000-and-up offerings. The only downside to the A3's design, really, is that the next A3, due to arrive in the U.S. sometime next year, looks even better.
Without adding any extras, the A3 Premium (the base trim in Audi parlance; the step-up variant is the Premium Plus) as equipped in 45 TFSI guise includes aluminum interior trim, heated front seats with leather seating surfaces throughout the cabin, with eight-way adjustability (plus four lumbar adjustments) for the driver. The Camry's front seats both offer eight-way adjustability, and the XSE V6 trim includes leather trim and heating for the front seats, too.
The Camry XSE V6, perhaps surprisingly, does not include navigation among its standard features (it can be had for $2,790 as part of the Driver Assist Package with Options), but it does include both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so that's essentially a moot point—and doubly so, because the A3 takes the same approach. Both come with good-sized displays, the Camry XSE V6 using an 8.0-inch display as the interface to the nine-speaker JBL Audio Plus with ClariFi system, which includes Bluetooth audio and handsfree functions as well as AM/FM/HD Radio/CD and SiriusXM, one USB media port, two USB charge ports, and voice recognition.
The A3 Premium's standard tech kit includes a 7.0-inch display and MMI Radio interface, with HD Radio and the aforementioned Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, but since I didn't opt for the Premium Plus trim, this A3 misses out on the 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, but makes do just fine with its standard 10-speaker system. Overall, the electronics advantage you might expect the Audi to have is not really there; most of the A3's more "wow" features (like Virtual Cockpit and advanced driver-assist tech) are part of the $3,000-dearer Premium Plus's realm or optional packages. One thing the Camry has that the A3 doesn't at this price point is a 10-inch head-up display (HUD), which can be a great help in maintaining alertness while knowing where you're going and what's going on in the car.
As closely matched as these cars are on features, the behind-the-wheel driving experience is worlds apart. It's not so much that the A3 has immaculate at-the-limit driving dynamics; it doesn't. But it does have a very sweetly tuned suspension and a rigid chassis that communicate a classical Europeanness in ride and handling. For some of America's more neglected roads, however, the Camry's somewhat plusher ride may be preferable. Neither will let you down in a quick merge or two-lane pass, as both are more athletic than you might think, and are plenty powerful for their (different) sizes. The Audi, however, will inspire more confidence in slippery conditions, thanks to its standard quattro all-wheel drive. The Camry is available with all-wheel drive, but not when paired with the V-6 engine. ufa.bet
2020 Toyota Camry XSE V6 Vs. 2020 Audi A3 Premium 45 TFSI Quattro: Overall Value This match, to my eye, is a much closer one than the Mercedes A220 vs. Camry XLE battle, but that may just be my bias showing through. If this showdown were held next year, I'd expect the rather stunning new A3 to start any feature or performance comparison with a commanding lead over the Toyota on the strength of its design alone. But this year, as we say goodbye to the present A3, it's a much tougher call. The 2020 Toyota Camry XSE V6 represents a tremendous value in terms of feature set, technology, and power. But the whole premise of this Buy a Camry or … series is that the Camry, while commendable, is commonplace. The 2020 Audi A3, while it may be the least-expensive Audi, still isn't so popular as to be seen filling whole rows of parking lots, and it's a sharp little sedan even today. For the style-conscious who don't need a ton of extra space, the Audi A3 is a nice doorway into the world of much more expensive cars at the cost of a Camry.

The 20 cars that will mark the start of the new school year 2020

Smile, it’s back to school. The recovery will be very lively in the automotive industry, with a catch-up effect after the delays linked to Covid-19. A festival of novelties is announced. Soon to be unveiled or about to reach the dealerships, here are the stars of the next few weeks. From the city car to the supercar, from low-cost to luxury, there will be something for all tastes.
Audi Q5 Sportback
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it will be more stylish than your classic Q5.
If on the classic models side, Audi has cleaned up the silhouettes (more A1 and A3 in 3 doors), on the SUV side, the brand with the rings multiplies the possibilities. Thus, one year after the Q3, it will be the Q5’s turn to have its Sportback derivative, a coupe-type model. No surprise: we take a Q5 (which has just been restyled), redesign the roof drop, tilt the bezel and draw a spoiler above the lights. The priority is the look, with a few sacrifices in terms of rear roominess and cargo volume.
BMW M3 et M4
Why will they catch your attention? Because their nose will make you talk!
Two years after the presentation of the Series 3 G20, here is finally its sporty M3 version. The sedan will be unveiled at the same time as the M4 coupe. The two BMWs will make people talk with their huge angular bean grille, which will give a hyper aggressive look. The power will fly away. From 431 and 450 hp for the Competition, they will be increased to 480 and 510 hp. The least powerful will have a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the Competition will have an 8-speed automatic. They will still be rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive will be offered afterwards!
Citroën C4
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it has a divisive look.
Citroën is back to conquering the sedan market. Two years after the second generation stopped, the C4 is back, putting an end to the wobbly Cactus C4. However, Citroën has no desire to fit into the mould. Its new compact car therefore dares to adopt an original silhouette, tinted with SUVs and coupes. A risky gamble? The interior is much wiser. This new C4 has the particularity of being a 100% electric variant. But it has the same characteristics as the e-208, so it only requires a 50 kWh battery and a range of 350 km. There is always gasoline and diesel. Orders will open in September, with the revelation of prices. The car will arrive in dealerships during the fall.
Citroën Concept-car
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it will be one of the few concepts of the end of the year!
The Mondial de l’Automobile has been cancelled in the spring. But certainly, some brands (at least the French ones) had planned to exhibit a concept car there… and their project was inevitably advanced when the French show fell through. Even without a show, we should discover some concepts in the coming weeks. During an interview given during the confinement, Pierre Leclercq, Citroën’s design boss, evoked a surprise in the rafters before the end of the year, something “quite revolutionary”.
Cupra Formentor
Why is it going to get your attention? Because its design is successful.
It’s the first Cupra-specific model… even though it’s closely derived from the Leon. The Formentor could be one of the commercial surprises of the fall season because we bet that its muscular style will hit the bull’s eye. It’ll be a feathery, powerful package, including a 245-hp rechargeable hybrid. If Cupra is reasonable on prices, the Formentor can easily divert customers initially attracted by the Audi Q3 Sportback and Range Rover Evoque, especially since Cupra benefits from a good brand image.
Dacia Sandero
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it will go upscale… but it will remain cheap.
Dacia will enter a new era with the third generation of Sandero. In order to comply with increasingly stringent European standards and regulations, the city car will be entitled to the modern base of the latest Clio! However, this will be simplified and the Sandero will do without the most advanced driving aids. But it will benefit from new equipment. While the exterior will evolve smoothly, the interior will make its revolution with a more modern presentation, with a large touch screen in height! Under the hood, we’ll have a classic offer. The Sandero will wait a little before daring to go hybrid.
Fiat 500
Why is it going to get your attention? Because this 500 is electric.
A brand-new 500 is about to hit the dealerships. What’s special about it? It’s 100% electric, and it’s the only engine it has (the old thermal will remain in the catalog). The technical specifications are very attractive, with a power of 118 hp which promises great performance, and a large battery given its size, namely 42 kWh. This gives a range of 320 km according to the WLTP cycle. The 500 can get out of the city. For Fiat, this is also an opportunity to take its favorite car to the next level. The 500 is therefore packed with technology: full-LED optics, 10.25-inch touch screen, semi-autonomous driving. Of course, prices seem to be high, with €34,900 and €37,900 for the high-end La Prima sedan and cabriolet! But the special core France Edition series is 29,900 € and Fiat will unveil more accessible models in the fall.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Why is it going to get your attention? Because she’s going on a preview tour.
Ford’s electric SUV arrives in France. In September, the Mustang Mach-E will do a preview tour of dealerships. We’ll be able to see it in Nice, Marseille, Montpellier, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon, Dijon Strasbourg, Reims, Lille and Evreux. It’s an opportunity to see the vehicle, which dares to look like a Mustang SUV, before placing an order! Several technical configurations are available, from 258 to 337 hp. Autonomy can reach 600 km with the large 98.8 kWh battery. The model is available from €48,990.
Hyundai Tucson
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it may well distract you from 3008.
The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling model in France and Europe. Its renewal is therefore an important moment for the brand. That’s not going to prevent the brand from completely redesigning it! The Tucson will be the first SUV to take advantage of Hyundai’s new style, called Sensuous Sportiness. As announced in the Vision T concept (photo), this will result in an even more muscular silhouette with prominent edges. The front end will be original with a grille that incorporates part of the light signature. The interior presentation will be upgraded with digital instrumentation. This new Tucson should benefit from hybrid engines.
Maserati MC20
Why is it going to get your attention? Because it marks the revival of Maserati.
Initially scheduled for May, the presentation of Maserati’s new flagship will take place on September 9. The MC20 (for Maserati Corsica and 2020) is the first major new Trident model since 2016. It is a supersports car with a brand new V6 engine, entirely designed by Maserati. This 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine develops 630 bhp. The MC20 has already shown its supercar-like silhouette via teasers, but the camouflage has effectively hidden the lines. It will be a new addition to the range, as the GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be renewed in 2021, with an electric block.

2020 Cadillac CT4-V AWD First Test: The Caddy That Vigs
The new 2020 Cadillac CT4 lineup is being pitched as a subcompact entry aimed at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes A-Class/CLA-Class, and Audi A3/S3 sedans. But as has so often been the case throughout the brand’s recent history, the CT4 lands as kind of a “tweener” in many respects—aligned in price with the subcompacts but sized closer to the compacts. So does it come off as a roaring bargain, or like a big kid in class who was held back for a grade or two?
Our first crack at the CT4 is (for now) the top performing model—the CT4-V. But Cadillac is quick to point out that its price and performance are aligned with the mid-level (35 and 43 models) from Mercedes-AMG or an S3 in Audi’s lineup of A3/S3/RS3. This may in part be an attempt to manage expectations vis-à-vis the CT4-V’s 464-hp/445-lb-ft ATS-V predecessor. This is not that car.
How Much Power Does the CT4-V Make?
For motivation, the CT4-V uses a custom-tailored version of the big 2.7-liter turbo I-4 engine that we’ve praised in its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup applications, hitched to GM’s wonderful ten-speed automatic. The engine shares its basic block and head design with the pickups, along with the three-profile sliding cam-lobe valvetrain technology that supports active-fuel-management (cylinder shutoff for the middle two cylinders) to help tailor the engine’s power delivery and fuel efficiency to suit the driver’s demands. All of this is convincingly tuned to suit the very different mission of a Cadillac sport sedan. In its V state of tune, it makes 325 hp at 5,600 rpm and a stout 380 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. (In the pickups and in the CT4’s premium luxury trim grade, it makes 310 hp and 348­­–350 lb-ft). A Cadillac feature we love, which the pickups don’t get, is a variable exhaust snarl punctuated by fuel-cut snorts during shifts and overrun.
How Refined Is the Truck Engine in This Cadillac?
Last June, when defending a potential personal purchase of a base CT4 over the V (before any of us had driven either car or a 2.7-liter pickup), I expressed skepticism about the big four-banger achieving luxury car smoothness and refinement. Well giant counter-rotating balance shafts and sufficiently absorptive powertrain mounts must be doing the trick because I detected no untoward vibrations in the car—or the truck. I was never even aware of the engine operating in its two-cylinder mode, so either that almost never happens, or the various countermeasures work wonders. Indeed, the intake and exhaust notes are actively managed via Cadillac’s sound systems to remove unwanted frequencies, but this 2.7-liter nevertheless ends up sounding a bit coarser than the 2.0-liters powering its competitors.
How Fast Is the CT4-V?
In our 3,780-pound CT4-V, each horse tugs 11.6 pounds around—that’s 2–6 ounces less than the burden each horse bears in an Audi S3 Quattro, BMW M235i xDrive, or Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic. The optimum launch procedure at the test track is to set the drive-mode selector to Sport or Track, apply the brake, floor the gas to achieve the torque-converter stall-speed of 2,500 rpm, then release the brake and let the transmission do the work (it upshifts before redline regardless of any paddle-shifting efforts). The result measured on our Vbox: 5.1 seconds to 60 mph and a 13.6-second, 104.1-mph quarter-mile run (the results on Cadillac’s built-in 0-60 timer: 4.9 seconds).
Among established competitors, the only one we have test numbers for is a 2016 S3. That pre-facelift (and now last-generation) model weighed 3,420-pounds and routed 292 hp through a six-speed twin-clutch transmission (it has since lost 4 hp and gained a seventh cog). It hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to a 13.0-second, 105.3-mph quarter. We hope that our 595-miles-new CT4-V will perform better as it loosens up because we suspect the lighter A 35 and M235i will accelerate more like that S3.
The Hydra-Matic 10L60 deserves a strong shoutout here for its ability to keep this engine humming between the optimal points on the power and torque curves. It always finds the ideal gear for every situation, and it quickly senses when you’re ‘going for it,’ and flashes a “performance shift active” message in the instrument cluster, after which a green gear icon stays lit while it’s active. In this mode it really hangs onto the lower gears and downshifts aggressively when slowing for a turn. The shift paddles work well, but you won’t need them for performance driving. This is benchmark transmission tuning.
How Does the CT4-V Stop and Turn?
Four-piston front Brembo brakes and super-sticky 235/40R18 Continental SportContact 6 SSR tires collaborated to whoa this V from 60 mph in a respectable 104 feet—5 fewer than that S3 needed. And the eBoost variable pedal effort feels great in its “sport” setting, delivering linear brake response after minimal travel. The travel allowed in “tour” mode is notably longer. We measured 0.87g on our bumpier Michigan skidpad, so we expect to see numbers that meet or exceed the S3’s 0.91g back home on our smoother California test track. Subjectively, on our southeast Michigan handling loop, we were impressed with the steering. When set to its “tour” mode, it offers light resistance and a reasonable modicum of road feel—some of which seems to get lost in the heft that the “sport” and “track” settings add. Thanks to rigid mounting of the front subframe and the steering rack to this subframe, there’s absolutely no slop or hysteresis in the steering, which makes threading the CT4-V through a favorite set of esses both intuitive and joyful.
How Is the Ride and Handling?
Rear-drive CT4-Vs get the latest Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 damping system, which now includes accelerometers mounted to each damper, but the space required for this extra equipment doesn’t package with all-wheel-drive, so our test car features new passive variable-damping shocks from ZF. (They save enough money to allow Cadillac to offer AWD for just $500.) We’ve been very impressed with MR 4.0 on the C8 Corvette, and we’re sure it works wonders on the rear-drive CT4, but our car demonstrated remarkable suppleness on the frost heaves and other low amplitude impacts that mar Michigan’s roads, while controlling body motion admirably in the twisties. Body lean is minimal in high-g corners, and the all-wheel traction and high-grip tires enable impressive acceleration out of the corners. And of course, all of the subcompact competitors we’re talking about are based on transverse-engine front-drive architecture, whereas the CT4’s longitudinal rear-drive architecture brings it much closer to the ideal 50/50 front/rear weight distribution. This affords the Cadillac terrific balance that calls to mind a 3 Series or rear-drive 2 Series BMW.
So Is the CT4-V a Performance Bargain or Too Big for Its Class?
The size is a peculiarity. Not only is the CT4-V longer than its subcompact rivals (by 7.8 inches compared with the A 35 and by 11.4 inches relative to the S3), it’s also longer than their compact big brothers (2.2 inches longer than the Mercedes C43 AMG and 0.4 inch longer than an Audi S4). Despite heroic efforts in terms of lightweight materials use and computational optimization of the steel structure, the bigger CT4 ends up weighing 175-220 pounds more than its subcompact rivals. An A220 4Matic that was on hand during this loan felt noticeably lighter and nimbler as a result. Adding insult to this injury is the fact that, according to the tape measure, the CT4 isn’t universally roomier inside. All competitors boast greater rear leg room (and a tiny center hump) while the Mercedes A-Class also boasts more front and rear headroom. At least the Cadillac’s trunk is bigger than all but the BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe’s.
As for value, sure enough the pricing lines right up with that of the performance subcompacts, meaning it’s $5,000 to $11,000 cheaper than the compact performance sedan variants, but then they’re all more powerful and about a second quicker to 60 mph.
Should I Buy a Cadillac CT4-V?
Honestly a definitive answer should wait until A) we get another, possibly better broken-in CT4-V on our home track, and B) we get our hands on the A35, M235i Gran Coupe, and the latest S3 to assess how well this Cadillac can hang with its smaller rivals. But even if the numbers above stand, shoppers in this price bracket owe themselves a brisk test drive on a deserted curvy road in this proper rear-drive-biased chassis before committing to one of those transverse-engine all-wheelers. Try the CT4 on for size. It slots between the 2 and 3 Series BMW sedans, and if it fits your needs, it’s priced pretty near 330i xDrive with performance that splits the difference between that car and the M340i xDrive. So yeah, maybe it’s the big, held-back kid in class—but he’s ready to quarterback the varsity team.

International Women's Day means different things to different people, but the global focus on equality and celebration is clear. Throughout ancient and modern history, women have collaborated and lead purposeful action to redress inequality in the hope of a better future for their communities, children and themselves. Above all "International Women's Day" led to the formation of a globally united moment for women across countries to come together in hope and action: its global celebration is a time for reflection of how far women have come, advocacy for what is still needed, and action to continue breaking down barriers. With over a century of history, IWD is a growing movement centered around unity and strength. Nowadays women are celebrated because of their courage, beauty, and perseverance to do the things they want to achieve in life. Among many other aspects we must focus on this remarkable fact: in the late twentieth century, the two sexes have become more alike in their access to and usage of cars. This convergence of behavior says more about the actions taken by women to gain equality rather than about any changes in automobile production and technology. Among these actions the dominant trend has been for more women of all ages to be gainfully employed and then for women of all ages to be able to drive. They entered what some historians call “male public space” but they have kept all their values, like dignity, hope, tenacity, respect, empathy and their attitude and style. And talking about style, you have to admit that amazing socialite Miss Sam Beck is the queen of style. Not only: ever since she was a little girl, she've always loved cars. While other girls collected and played with Barbie dolls and playhouses, she has always dreamed of having a really nice ride and in the years she made her choice picking up one of the greatest car avalable in the market: Audi RS3. Isn't she fabolous? After all beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself, and she is a Driver, not just a hot girl posing next to a car. To quote what we said in our first post on this blog: you better call her Lady! *** *** *** The Audi RS3 is one of the greatest subcompact performance sedans of our time: the 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo in the RS3 has been available here for a few years now, and with 394 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, it's a firm favorite for those who aren't energized by the prospects of a BMW M2 Competition. However, it's no budget car with prices starting at over $56,000. That said, its unique engine note and undeniable capability on all surfaces make it one of the most usable performance cars available. All four wheels get some of the brilliant engine's output, which is managed by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Unlike the Bimmer, no manual option is available, but those who have sampled the S-tronic won't be too perturbed. The RS3, and the A3 on which it is based, are due for a complete redesign soon, so for now, little has changed. The 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system that was formerly an option is now included as standard, but aside from that, the RS3 is identical in 2020 guise to the 2019 model. Carbon-ceramic brakes have, however, been dropped from the options list. Essentially this facelift brings the RS3 in line with the recently updated A3 so you now get LED headlights (with optional Matrix upgrade) and the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel with configurable displays. The suspension is 25mm lower than the A3 and there’s a 20mm wider front track plus the usual RS styling upgrades – honeycomb grille, ‘quattro’ front bumper logo, larger air intakes, flared wheel arches and massive oval tailpipes. Carbon ceramic front brakes are an option, as is the wider-ranging magnetic adaptive damping system, more supportive RS bucket seats and the 'Audi phone box' with its wireless charging pad. The biggest headline, however, is the launch of the RS3 Saloon – the first time Audi has fitted a transverse five-cylinder unit into such a body style. Proportionally it looks like an older, more compact A4 and presents a tempting four-door AWD rival to BMW’s M2. Besides the tremendous engine, the RS3 comes with a unique red-stitched Nappa leather interior as well as 19" 5-arm wheels, full LED headlamps, RS-specific fascias and diffuser and magnetic ride suspension. Safety features on all the A3 models include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control and a tire pressure monitoring system. Airbags include advanced driver and passenger front airbags, knee airbags, thorax side airbags as well as side curtain airbags. An anti-theft alarm system comes standard, while Active Lane Assist, Audi Pre-Sense automatic braking and adaptive cruise control are all optional on the A3 Prestige. The Quattro four-wheel-drive system comes with new software. So while the RS3 could send 100% of its power to the rear axle before this mid-life update, it never felt as aggressively set up as you might hope. In its new guise, the system never has a standard power split. Audi’s engineers say the ratio between front and rear axles constantly varies, to match both grip levels beneath and driver input inside. There’s more power, too, than . The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine produces a nice round 400PS, or 395hp, which is up 33hp on before. Additionally, the engine is 26kg lighter (thanks to an aluminum crankcase and magnesium oil pan, if you want to geek out). The top speed is 155mph, but Audi will lift this to 280kph with the right options box ticking. And that’s still limited. For a car this size, it’s frankly bonkers. Its 0-100kph sprint also lives in a more serious part of the market. Audi quotes 4.1sec—0.2sec quicker than the old RS3—and we suspect it’ll dip below that easily. With the seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox linked to a launch control system, it’s all dangerously attainable, too. Sensible numbers—on the new-fangled WLTP system—are 12.63km/L and 216g/km of CO2 emissions. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. BMW/Handout Car companies often behave like children. What one company gets, all the others suddenly need to have too. The three big German luxury brands are notorious for this behaviour. For decades, Audi, BMW and Mercedes have been chasing each other down ever-stranger rabbit holes: fastback SUVs, four-door versions of two-door coupes, mildly sporty sub-compact crossovers. For a while, sales were booming – like somebody in product planning said ‘there are no bad ideas’ and everyone took it literally. Which brings us to this new baby BMW. It came as a bit of a shock when engineers in Munich whipped the sheet off to reveal... what exactly? It’s called the 2 Series Gran Coupe. It exists in a niche-of-a-niche as a sub-compact entry-level fastback sedan-coupe thing. Frankenstein would’ve been impressed. Story continues below advertisement It’s called the 2 Series, but one engineer mentioned it’s roughly the same size as the 3 Series sedan from 10 years ago. Adults can fit in the back seat, which is not a given in this category. The rear door of the BMW is minuscule, but once inside there’s room for four. The dashboard is immediately impressive. It’s stuffed with high-resolution screens which are neatly integrated into the cabin architecture and not simply stuck onto the dash like an afterthought. The Gran Coupe gets BMW’s next-gen infotainment system, which hasn’t even made its way into some of the brand’s more expensive vehicles yet. “The target group is young urban professionals, early 30s, single or starting a family,” said Jochen Schmalholz, product manager for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe. As an entry point into the brand, it’s an important vehicle, he added. Audi has done well in Canada with its entry-level ($33,400) A3 sedan, selling over 4,000 of them last year, according to GoodCarBadCar data. Mercedes did so well with its sub-compact ($40,300) CLA sedan, it is launching two more entry-level cars this year: the A-Class sedan and A-Class hatchback. Until now, BMW was the only one without a real competitor in this game. The 2 Series Gran Coupe feels dense but slices into corners, resisting understeer and tracking true. BMW/Handout In Munich, engineers rolled out a couple of camouflaged 2 Series Gran Coupe prototypes for us to drive. They won’t arrive in Canadian dealerships until March 2020, but the engineers said the cars we drove were in the final phase of testing. Those who expected the new baby BMW to be a frisky, tail-happy car like the rear-wheel drive 2 Series Coupe will be disappointed. Confusingly, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is based on an entirely different chassis. It has front-wheel drive, although all Canadian models will likely have all-wheel drive as standard. Nevertheless, the new BMW handles with the crispness of a good schnitzel. The steering is lightly weighted and quick-witted. The car feels dense – like a bulldog – but it nevertheless slices into corners, resisting understeer and tracking true. That’ll be enough sportiness for most, especially if you’ve got a kid in the back seat. BMW says the 2 Series coupe – one of the most entertaining, bang-for-your-buck sports cars out there – will stick around as a rear-drive model.) Pricing has yet to be decided, but the basic 228i model is sure to be one of the most affordable cars in BMW’s lineup. The 228 horsepower engine felt sluggish mated to the eight-speed automatic gearbox, but this is a machine for price-point buyers. If you’re looking for German luxury cars with the lowest monthly payment, this car will be on your list. There’s no issue with sluggishness in the M235i, which gets BMW’s most powerful four-cylinder engine to date. With 301 horsepower it propels the car with the sort of neck-straining acceleration you expect from the Bavarians. The Mercedes A-Class is our current benchmark in this entry-level luxury class, mainly because of its zesty handling and incredibly high-quality cabin. BMW’s new 2 Series Gran Coupe is – to put it politely – more challenging to look at, but the cabin is easily the equal of Mercedes. It seems strange, but it’s a smart copycat move by BMW. While the sub-compact-German-luxury-fastback-sedan is an odd niche, these vehicles do entice new buyers into luxury brands. The relatively affordable (circa $400 monthly) lease payments make sure of that. In other words, this is one strange automotive niche that will get more crowded in the coming years. Odd proportions don’t help. It’s tall, bulbous looking and not as sleek as its most direct competitor, the new Mercedes CLA. Interior It’s more spacious than it looks. I’m 5”11, but the headroom wasn’t an issue for me in the front or back. Expect to spend at least a few thousand dollars on options to make it feel like a real luxury car though. Performance It’s very different from the rear-drive 2 Series coupe. This is essentially a lowered X2 SUV. A clever new torque vectoring system and a limited-slip differential on the front axle make the car eager for the occasional on-ramp blast. We’ll need more seat time for a real verdict. Technology How this car handles Canada’s potholed roads remains an unanswered question. Adjustable suspension will be optional, but the standard springs and dampers handled Munich’s smooth roads with aplomb. Cargo The sedan-style trunk can hold 450-litres of stuff. We also don’t get the RS 4 Avant. Europeans will see the RS 4 get a mid-cycle refresh next year, and the next generation will be a plug-in hybrid, says Hoffmann. The RS 5 will also get a facelift.
R8
The R8 with its naturally aspirated V-10 remains the flagship and spirit of the portfolio, Hoffmann says. It just got a facelift, and Audi is working on concepts for the next generation and deciding how much electrification to give it. No decisions have been made on the next generation, he says. It might even get a new name—again no decision, he tells us. In addition to the facelift, expect some R8 derivatives to keep the flagship relevant.
The future will have two definitions of sporty—raw V-10 power as well as electric power in the form of the E-Tron GT which could become a future icon for the brand like the R8 and TT, Hoffmann says. These little beauties are considered too small for the U.S. market. There are no plans to bring either here.
E-Tron

The Q4 E-Tron compact crossover is expected in the U.S. in 2021. It uses the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform that is spawning a family of small electric vehicles including the VW ID 3 in Europe and an ID 4 expected for the U.S.
