Yes, the 2021 BMW 4 Series has the enlarged kidneys first seen on the Concept 4 showcar from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as the all-electric i4. It's definitely... a look. And it's one we don't like, at least in photos. BMW says the grille "is framed by surfaces with a three-dimensional mesh structure," so there's at least some interesting detail, though it kind of loses any luster it might've had by bolting the European front plate in the middle. LED headlights are standard across all models, and the shape just doesn't work with those giant buck teeth in the middle. Compared to an equivalent 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series is 2.2 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2.2 inches lower. But it rides on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. See how it stacks up to its rivals in our spec comparison.Luckily, the rest of the 4 Series looks pretty darn good, with a tapering roofline similar to that of the larger 8 Series coupe. All 4 Series coupes come standard with 18-inch wheels, though a variety of 19-inch options are available, as are M Sport brakes with either blue or red calipers, an aero kit and a rear lip spoiler. The LED taillights have an interesting light signature not unlike that of the recently revealed 2021 Acura TLX, and honestly, we think the new 4 Series looks best from the rear three-quarter view.

Being a two-door coupe, the rear seats aren't super spacious, but they can at least be folded flat to accommodate longer items from the 12-cubic-foot trunk.The 4 Series comes standard with analog gauges and a 5.1-inch color display in the instrument cluster, as well as an 8.8-inch center touchscreen for the iDrive 7 infotainment suite. Opt for the Live Cockpit Professional package and you upgrade to a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge display, like the one offered in BMW's other models, as well as a 10.2-inch central multimedia screen. Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, frontal collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights and speed limit information. You can add the company's Driving Assistance Professional Package, which gets you full-speed adaptive cruise control as well as Extended Traffic Jam Assist, a Level 2 driver-assistance feature that adds lane-keeping assistance to make highway commutes easier.A particularly cool tech upgrade is the optional Parking Assistance Package, which not only includes a 3D surround camera, but has a back-up assistant that actually memorizes the last 150 feet of your journey at speeds below 20 mph, and can automatically trace the same path in reverse. For the 4 Series, this package adds BMW's new drive recorder, which can automatically capture 20 seconds of video around the moment of an impact and save it to the car's hard drive. The 430i comes with BMW's 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine, delivering 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard but, as its name suggests, the 430i xDrive comes with all-wheel drive. These models accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 and 5.3 seconds, respectively. Regardless of driveline, the 2.0-liter turbo engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.The M440i xDrive, meanwhile, uses a 3.0-liter turbo I6 engine, which now has a 48-volt mild-hybrid battery, which delivers supplemental electric boost during acceleration and smooths out the action of the stop-start system. (The engine can now shut off below 9 mph rather than waiting until the car comes to a complete stop.) All told, the 3.0-liter I6 produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. The 2021 4 Series will go on sale globally in October, and it'll be priced from $46,595 in the US, including $995 for destination. The 430i xDrive will come in at $48,595 and the M440i xDrive will cost $59,495. This represents a $650 increase over the 2020 430i and 430i xDrive coupes, while the 2021 M440i is a full $5,150 more expensive than the 2020 440i. The 2020 Audi A5 and S5 Family Receives Mild Botox Injections

Audi has refreshed the A4 sedan’s swoopier (and better looking) A5 siblings for 2020. The A5 family’s changes for 2020 closely mirror those applied to the A4 and amount to incremental improvements for the two-door coupe and Cabriolet, as well as the four-door A5 Sportback and the hotter S variants of all three.

Mechanically, there won’t be anything new. The A5 models’ turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines still make 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque and come paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The S5 coupe, Cabriolet, and Sportback retain the same 349-hp turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 (making 369 lb-ft of torque) as before. That leaves the bulk of the changes to the cosmetic realm.

Up front, the A5 and S5 get flatter and wider honeycomb grilles, in addition to reshaped front bumpers to convey a greater sense of sportiness. Sure. Audi also says the wide-face changes link the 5s to the relentlessly boxy original Audi Quattro, but we’re not sure we’re seeing the connection. Both the headlights and taillights have been revamped to bring the A5 and S5 in line with the rest of the Audi’s lineup.

Inside, the new A5 and S5 get a new 10.1-inch display with Audi’s latest iteration of its MMI, MIB 3—just like their A4 siblings. Audi says the new system is up to ten times faster than the previous one. It’s also a touchscreen! Audi was one of the last automakers to hold out and insist on physical controls for its infotainment (using buttons and a rotating click knob controller), but it’s finally joined the rest of the automotive world and embraced touch.

The two-door A5 coupe and four-door Sportback hatchback models now cost the same, $43,895, despite the latter’s extra pair of doors. (The Sportback used to cost $1,300 more than the coupe, a worthy tradeoff for its extra practicality and similarly seductive looks.) The A5 convertible demands an extra $7,000, bringing it to $50,895. For 2020, both the more powerful S5 Coupe and Sportback have a base price of $52,895, $500 less than in 2019. Stepping up to the S5 Cabriolet will cost an eye-watering extra $8,300, but the droptop’s base price was cut by a whopping $3,000 relative to last year.

Zoom out, and you’ll notice that the dominant story line here is how Audi added value to its A5 and S5 range without increasing the cars’ prices. Audi says the 2020 models are already on their way to dealerships, so interested parties should keep their eyes peeled.

2020 Audi E-Tron Sportback costs $78,395, has 218 miles of range

A sleeker, sportier 2020 E-Tron Sportback is coming to join the E-Tron in Audi’s growing EV portfolio this summer.

The E-Tron Sportback is a coupe-like version of the E-Tron battery-electric SUV that went on sale in 2018, and it will sell at a slight premium, with Audi announcing Thursday a starting price of $78,395 versus $75,795 for the regular E-Tron. Both figures include destination.

The E-Tron Sportback debuts with the same mechanicals as the E-Tron, meaning a dual-motor setup delivering 355 horsepower (402 hp with Boost Mode) and all-wheel drive—a setup good for 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.5 seconds. A sportier S variant with a tri-motor setup good for 496 hp is also coming, though Audi hasn’t said when it will land.

2020 Audi E-Tron Sportback

The battery in the E-Tron Sportback is a 95-kilowatt-hour unit and Audi quotes an EPA-estimated range of 218 miles. The regular E-Tron is rated at 204 miles by the EPA, with the extra miles of the E-Tron Sportback likely due to its slipperier shape. Using a high-speed charger, an 80-percent charge can be completed in about 30 minutes, according to Audi.

Anyone purchasing a new E-Tron Sportback will receive 1,000 kWh of free charging (equivalent to approximately 2,500 miles of range) at Electrify America fast-charging stations to be used within the first four years of ownership. Electrify America currently has 400 charging stations across the country and plans to double this by 2022.

Also included as standard is adaptive air suspension, 20-inch wheels, heated and cooled seats, a digital instrument cluster, and a surround-view camera. There’s also standard navigation with a feature that estimates where the vehicle can travel based on its current charge state.

Audi E-tron Sportback

To mark the E-Tron Sportback’s market arrival, Audi is offering a special launch edition that will come in an exclusive Plasma Blue shade of paint, together with orange brake calipers, Monaco Gray Valcona leather trim, and a few additional special touches. Numbers will be limited and pricing for this model hasn’t been.

Production of the E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback is handled at Audi’s plant in Brussels, Belgium.

Audi plans to have 20 EVs in its lineup by 2025. Others in the pipeline we know of include an E-Tron GT super sedan, Q4 E-Tron compact SUV, and an A4-sized model that might end up replacing the A5.

2020 Hyundai Sonata Design: We Dive Deep on the Sonata’s Radical New Look

Rarely in the world of affordable midsize sedans is bold design a priority—just look at the newly revamped but bland-as-a-boiled-potato Subaru Legacy. That’s not the case with the new Hyundai Sonata.

As part of the design process, the Hyundai team looked back toward the sixth-generation Sonata that we first drove back in 2010. They see that car as “an icon vehicle that really put us on the map” as an automaker that values design, and they aimed to further illustrate that value with the 2020 Sonata.

We touched on this car’s design shortly after its initial reveal (read here), but after hearing from Kevin Kang—senior creative manager at Hyundai Design North America—and experiencing the car for ourselves, there’s definitely more to tell.

The Platform

I shadowed a transportation design class once. When you’re sketching a car, you start with wheels, and as a general rule, the more distance between the fronts and the rears, the better the car will look. It’s no surprise then, that Kang pushed for a longer wheelbase on the eighth-gen Sonata.

He and the design team got it—the 2020 Sonata has a 111.8-inch wheelbase, which is 1.4 inches longer than that of its predecessor. The designers also lobbied for a shorter front overhang to deemphasize the Sonata’s front-wheel-drive architecture. At just 20 mm, the negative delta for the front overhang is smaller than the positive one for wheelbase, but it’s large enough to make a visual difference.

According to Kang, though, “the biggest win was lowering the shock towers.” Minimizing the height of the shock absorber mounts up front allowed designers to eschew the traditional three-box sedan look and create the eighth-gen 2020 Sonata’s sculpted, sloping front end. Kang says he was surprised to learn during the design process that, “a good design is quantifiable. Every millimeter counts.”

Exterior Design

About that front end, Hyundai is quick to point out that the hood extends all the way to the front grille. This is extremely rare among the midsize car segment (only the Volkswagen Passat has a similar design) but it’s much more common with luxury cars such as the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4/A5. To buy a Mercedes-Benz sedan without a cut line for the hood, you’d need to step up to the near-$100,000 S-Class.

It’s not something I would have noticed had it not been pointed out to me, but the lack of a hood cut definitely makes the design look more upscale. Especially in Hampton Gray, the Sonata does a convincing impression of a coupe-like Audi four-door.

The second, more noticeable exterior design element is what Kang and his team call the “dynamic lasso.” It’s a silly name for what consists of a chrome strip that starts in the daytime running lights and carries back toward the windshield and around the window profile. Remember, cohesive design elements that tie a vehicle together are always good. The LED running lights are phased into the chrome trim on the beltline with hundreds o tiny laser perforations in a way that looks premium beyond the Sonata’s price point.

Interior

The theme of continuity carries over to the 2020 Sonata’s interior. One design trend Kang’s team has observed recently is connecting the infotainment screen and the digital gauge cluster, a la Mercedes. However, they felt that the Mercedes approach of physically connecting the displays on the same plane resulted in a gauge cluster that’s too close to the steering wheel, meaning it’s exposed to glare.

In the 2020 Sonata, the driver’s side of the infotainment screen slopes down and inward toward the gauge cluster. Kang calls it “screen threading.” This gives the illusion that the displays are connected but allows the digital gauges to be set deeper in the dashboard. On the passenger side, the airbag cover is also mounted extremely low, which gives the cabin a light, airy feeling.

The dynamic lasso shape appears as a metallic trim piece on the front door panels, sitting just above Kang’s favorite part of the vehicle: its armrests. Never have I seen a man more excited about armrests.

As a passenger in the car, I totally get it. The armrests are maybe 10 inches long and a couple inches wide—nothing special—but there’s an alcove punched out into the door along its entire length. That not only creates a small shelf for phones and wallets and such, but it means the handle with which to pull the door closed is much longer than in most cars, and it works ergonomically with a wider range of users. Again, it’s a little detail that you might not think about, but another little way the 2020 Sonata stands out in its class.
