Tumblr. 11 Years Later.
Been on Tumblr since August 2010 (You can check my archive).  I joined it when a bunch of my friends were on it. As of now, I am pretty sure I am the last one still here lol but that is ok. Honestly, what spurred me to make this post was looking through my archive for a very old photo of my first car (found it btw).  Going through my old posts really brings me back, times were simpler. I was 20 in 2010, going to Community College. Had left a minimum wage job to focus on school, driving my 1987 Toyota Supra (For any car people reading this, in 2010 it wasn’t as appreciated as it is now). There have been a lot of changes since then.  - After Community College I went to a University. I acquired both a Bachelors in Accounting and my MBA.  - Currently I am not working, I was a Senior Analyst for a small biotech company. Unfortunately the companies drug didn’t make FDA approval, so 2/3 of the company including myself were laid off. That is ok though, the biotech space can be like that. Especially if you want to work for start-ups. It is crazy sometimes, I think about my first job 11 years ago as a Checker at a grocery store and consider my current occupation. Really makes you appreciate the work you put into your career.  - Unfortunately, this does mean my dream is working in the film industry is flailing. My only real hope is getting into a film company in a supervisor role at some point and attempt to move up from there. It will be hard, but do-able. I was able to jump from working in non-profit to biotech in 2 job changes. That is already considered pretty impressive. The pay will be lower though, but I can’t see myself working in biotech forever, just not quite my cup of tea besides the salary.  - I am still into cars, in 2010 I had a 1987 Supra. I actually recently bought a 2021 Supra (Yeah, biotech pays pretty well lol). And have been enjoying it.  - Still saving for a house, unfortunately while my salary has gone up so have housing prices.  - After delaying it for far too long, I started an automotive YouTube channel, I enjoy making content. And honestly, it keeps my busy right now as a nice distraction from sending out applications. Robs Autos is the channel.  - Photography is still a big thing for me, my Instagram is TheRobLife for pictures! - In 2010 I had posted about my dog Siku, and then a few years later we also added a second husky, Ikkuma,  to the family. sadly Siku passed away in 2019 but we did add another husky, Sakari, to the family in 2020.  - Fitness is still pretty important to me, I am staying active at the gym. I feel it is one of the few things I have any sort of semblance of control over in my life.  And yeah, that is pretty much it for updates. Hoping my 30′s treat me better than my 20′s which I honestly still feel a bit like I wasted. But, what can you do?

What’s a RAV4 Prime and What Makes It So Quick and Efficient?
The new RAV4 Prime is the plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4. Like the RAV4 Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime sports a 177-hp and 165-lb-ft 2.5-liter I-4 engine mated to electric motors and an e-CVT up front, another electric motor at the rear axle, and a battery pack underneath the rear seats. That’s about where the similarities end. The Prime’s motors are more powerful for starters—its front one makes 179 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, while its rear makes 53 hp and 89 lb-ft of torque, with a total combined system output of 302 hp (versus 219 hp combined for the RAV4 Hybrid).

Depending on whether you have the standard 3.3-kW on-board charger or optional 6.6-kW charger (the latter available as part of the $3,765 Premium Package on the top-trim RAV Prime XSE), it can be charged from empty to full in  about an hour and a half on a Level 2 240-volt charger, or less than 12 hours on a Level 1 120-volt charger.  With a full battery, the EPA says RAV4 Prime can motor for 42 miles on electricity before the engine kicks on, giving the SUV a total driving range of about 600 miles. When accounting for both its motors and engine, the EPA rates the RAV4 at 105/84/94 mpg-e, or 38 mpg combined if you never bother to plug the Prime in and treat it like a RAV4 Hybrid.
How Fast Is the RAV4 Prime?
So, to the test track: In the hands of our well-traveled test team, the RAV4 Prime was surprisingly a bit of a handful as it accelerated from 0-60 mph in an impressively quick 5.5 seconds, and on through the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 98.7 mph. “Well, that was unexpected,” said associate road test editor Erick Ayapana, “The RAV4 Prime really made me work to control wheel spin, seeming from the rear axle first, and then the front axle. Regardless, this thing feels strong off the line, good pull from start to the quarter-mile finish.”
The RAV4 Prime’s straight-line performance makes it the second-quickest Toyota we’ve tested in quite a long time—the only vehicle faster has been a 2021 GR Supra 3.0, which needed 4.0 seconds to hit 60 mph and ran a 12.3-second quarter-mile at 115.8 mph (we haven’t tested the Supra GR 2.0 yet, it’ll likely be quicker than the RAV4 Prime, too). Hot on the RAV4 Prime’s heels is the NASCAR-lookalike V-6-powered Toyota Camry TRD. Its best run was 5.8 seconds to 60 mph and a 14.4-second quarter-mile at 99.8 mph.
Somewhat surprisingly given its heavy 4,372-pound curb weight, the RAV4 Prime performed admirably in our braking and handling tests. In the former, it needed 127 feet in our 60-0 mph emergency stop test, and in the latter it lapped our figure eight in 27.0 seconds at 0.65 g average.
How Does the RAV4 Prime Drive?
Out in the real world, the RAV4 Prime is probably the most impressive Toyota we’ve driven since piloting a Land Cruiser through Moab, Utah. Simply, put—it just works. And works well.
With a full battery and left to its own devices in its “Auto EV/HV” (Electric Vehicle/Hybrid Vehicle) drive mode, the RAV4 Prime easily hits its 42-mile EPA-estimated range, and it feels like a big, comfy electric SUV doing so. Power delivery is relatively quick, and even with the engine off, the Toyota’s motors never leave you wanting for power. With the engine on, the RAV4 is seriously quick for an SUV in this class, though as Ayapana noted at the test track, the Prime has trouble delivering lots of power smoothly from low speeds as its electronic brain manages power and torque delivery from three separate sources.
The RAV4 Prime’s suspension is softly sprung, which leads to a fair amount of brake dive and rebounding after impacts, but body roll through bends is well-controlled. Notably, the RAV4 Prime’s brakes manage the transition from regenerative to mechanical brakes smoothly—a balance Toyota has long struggled with on its hybrids. Steering feel is surprisingly tactile and well-weighted.
What’s the RAV4 Prime’s Interior Like?
The current RAV4’s interior has been one of our design favorites in the compact SUV segment, and Toyota leaves well enough alone with the RAV4 Prime. The cabin is comfortable, relatively spacious, and unlike some other mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs (the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, for instance), the battery doesn’t eat into cargo space.
Materials quality was great for our loaded RAV4 Prime XSE’s $42,600 starting price ($49,831 as- tested), though there were a few squeaks and rattles coming from the back of the cabin. A slightly-cheaper RAV4 Prime SE is available, too. It starts at $39,425.
The Bottom Line
Ignoring its speed, efficiency, and comfort, the best part about the RAV4 Prime is just how seamlessly it all works. It’s exactly as engaging (or disengaging) as you want it to be. If you want to just get in after a long day of work and motor on home, it’ll comfortably and quietly whisk you away. And yet, if a shot in the arm is what you’re looking for, its surprisingly charming 302-hp powertrain ought to be more than enough to wake you up. The RAV4 Prime, then, is not just a great plug-in hybrid, but it’s also a hugely compelling compact SUV that ought to be on the short list for anyone in the market for new family transportation.

Ever go to an event where all the cars were the same color?
When cars and trucks are being produced, there is an early stage known as the “body in white.” The phrase applies to completed body shells as they head into the paint shop for color to be applied. 
Perhaps taking the concept of “body in white” a giant step further, 
Guglielmo Miani, who heads Italian fashion brand Larusmiani, thought it would be great fun to stage a road rally, but only for cars wearing white paint, and thus the inaugural Fuori Concorso was held in the California desert early in 2020, with a second was later in the year on the Italian island of Sardinia.
It’s not unusual for red cars to dominate at Ferrari events, or black cars at a Model T club gathering, but what would you think about staging a car show or driving event exclusively for cars of a certain color? 
Or here’s an alternative: A car show where cars are parked neither at random nor by marque or model or model year, but by color? 
British Motor Show launches robot competition
These robots are made from car parts
Did you miss World Recycling Day? It was held recently and the British Motor Show used the occasion to launch a Car Robot Competition as part of its “Crazee Creations” category. 
So how does it work? 
“The Car Robot Competition will see showgoers able to create their own battle-style robots using old car parts, ahead of the show, to fight head-to-head in an arena, which will form a central part of the Show’s Crazee Car Corner, where you will find the weird and the wonderful, from monster trucks to modified cars,” motor show organizers announced.
“Participants are invited to design their very own robot, static or mobile, using recycled car parts. The robots will then be judged for style and creativity before a winner is announced… Teams are invited from schools, colleges, companies, or just groups of friends and individuals.”
The show’s Crazee Car Corner will feature a display of “modified cars, mental motorbikes, oddball caravans, upcycled automotive art and extreme machines. If you like the unusual, you’ll love the Crazee area.”
“The British Motor Show is about cars of all ages, shapes and sizes – it’s a celebration of cars in all their forms and the Crazee Corner is where those are taken to the extreme” said Andy Entwistle, the motor show’s chief executive. “That makes it the perfect place for visitors to create their own car robot creations and let their automotive imaginations run wild – and there’ll be some cool prizes on offer, too.”

Beaulieu’s ‘Simply’ shows launch May 23

The British National Motor Museum at Beaulieu opens its series of “Simply” car shows on May 23 with Simply Electric, a showplace for electric and hybrid cars and motorcycles and bicycles.
Organizers are particularly interested in any vintage electric vehicles and in classics that have been converted to electric powertrains.
The event will be the first of 15 such one-marque or one-type of vehicle shows scheduled to be staged this year at the British museum.

2 Jet Z Hot Wheels car set for Carlisle Imports show

2 Jet Z, a home-built creation that became a Hot Wheels toy, will be among the vehicles featured May 14-15 at the annual Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania.
Built by Luis Rodriguez and powered by 630-horsepower version of the 2JZ engine from the Toyota Supra, the car looks like a fighter-jet cockpit on wheels. In 2018, the car was selected as a grand national champion of such full-scale Hot Wheels cars and was shrunk to 1:64 scale to become a real Hot Wheels die-cast toy.
In addition to 2 Jet Z, Rodriguez will show his newest creation, Scorp*lon, a car inspired by one of Syd Mead’s vehicles in the movie Thon.
The Import & Performance showcase also will feature a Volvo celebration, 20 years of the Honda K-Series, 30 years of the Toyota 2JZ engine and 50 years of Opel Manta.
Forest Grove concours postponed
The 48th annual Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance has been postponed until July 17, 2022, the organizing committee has announced. The event is held on the campus of Pacific University, which has become a coronavirus vaccination site.

Don’t believe that gasoline-electric vehicles are anything but boring and slow? Well, it’s time to change your tune, because the RAV4 Prime is the second-quickest Toyota after the Supra sports car. With 302 horsepower on tap, this plug-in hybrid SUV can zip from a standstill to 60 mph in as little as 5.7 seconds, a time that is legitimately swift. And thanks to ample low-end electric torque, it feels even fleeter.
Delivering that strong performance is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an Atkinson-cycle unit borrowed from the RAV4 Hybrid but retuned for Prime time. Without going too far into the technical weeds, it’s augmented by a trio of electric motor-generators, two in the front transaxle assembly, and a third at the rear. The latter provides on-demand all-wheel drive by turning the aft tires. Serving as an electron reservoir is an 18.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, mounted under the main-cabin floor in a way that does not detract from passenger space. It’s cooled using air-conditioning refrigerant and is backed by a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty. Drivers are further shielded from repair bills by a separate, 8-year/100,000-mile guarantee that covers other hybrid components.
That generously sized battery helps provide a preliminary EPA efficiency rating of 94 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and an electric-only range estimated at 42 miles. Driving it carefully and with the climate control off a good portion of the time, I managed to coax 45 miles out of the RAV4 Prime while running solely on electrons. Honestly, I expected a little more considering I was driving quite conservatively and the conditions were perfect, with temps in the upper 70s. Still, Toyota has delivered on its range promise.
As for efficiency, running this vehicle about 50% on electricity and then 50% on gasoline once the battery pack was depleted, I averaged an indicated 45.3 mpg, though that figure is potentially misleading because real-world economy depends greatly on the ratio between those two operating modes. If, for instance, you drive 50 miles and 42 of them are all electric, the average fuel economy is going to be much higher than if you take a 600-mile road trip burning fossil fuel the whole way.
The times, they are a-chargin’
Hook the RAV4 Prime up to an ordinary 120-volt household outlet, and it takes around 12 hours to fully replenish the battery pack. Plug it in to a 240-volt line with 16 amps of juice, and that time drops to around 4.5 hours. Still, if that’s not speedy enough, XSE models with the premium package (a $3,765 upcharge, which also requires the $815 weather package and the $1,620 audio package) can recharge in as little as 2.5 hours if you have access to a 6.6-kilowatt, 240-volt outlet.

As public charging stations become more and more prevalent, it will be easier and easier to live with an electric vehicle.

After depleting the battery during testing, I found a nearby ChargePoint public station. Hooked to a Level 2 outlet running at 6.6 kW, the vehicle gained 13 miles of EV range after about 45 minutes of charging, right in line with Toyota’s 2.5-hour claim.
Despite basically inventing the modern hybrid, this is Toyota’s first plug-in SUV. There is no shortage of similar crossover SUV models available today, but they’re mostly at the upper end of the market. There aren’t too many direct competitors to the RAV4 Prime. Subaru’s Crosstrek is one, but it only offers 17 miles of electric range. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is another, with an advertised 22 miles of juice. It’s conceivable you might cross-shop this Toyota with plug-in versions of the Kia Niro or even the Chrysler Pacifica, but none of these are a perfect fit, either. Really, this RAV4’s number-one rival is the new Ford Escape PHEV, which offers slightly less electric range at 37 miles and has around 93 less horsepower, but at least it’s a touch more efficient at 100 MPGe.
Forceful yet mild-mannered
Driving the RAV4 Prime purely on electricity is a great experience. It’s punchy, smooth and nearly silent. As with other EVs, there’s tons of low-end torque, which makes this Toyota leap off the line when you nail the accelerator. Its enthusiasm does wane at higher speeds, but its performance is still solid, able to hit 60 mph in around 9.2 seconds. However, this vehicle’s performance shines most when driven as a hybrid. Throw that internal-combustion engine into the mix and this RAV4’s sprinting abilities improve by leaps and bounds, with its 0-to-60-mph time dropping by nearly 40%.

Potent and efficient, what more could you ask for?

When navigating corners, the Prime feels like it has a touch more body roll than the RAV4 TRD I reviewed recently. This is likely because of its softer ride, which is partly due to loads of extra weight. At about 4,300 pounds in XSE trim, this vehicle is around 500 pounds heavier than the bulkiest RAV4 Hybrid, thanks to its much larger battery pack. To accommodate that additional mass, the vehicle’s chassis has been retuned. The steering is light to the touch, though it’s not as crisp as in other RAV4s. The Prime is, however, extremely quiet inside thanks to laminated front side glass and additional sound deadening, alterations that make for a serene driving experience. Braking feel is also praiseworthy. This plug-in SUV’s pedal has nice weight to it and is easy to modulate, with no discernible weirdness when transitioning from regenerative to friction braking.
A comfortable and versatile interior
Inside the RAV4 Prime, there’s not much to get excited about, and that’s a good thing. Just like the non-plug-in model, this Toyota’s cabin is one of the better offerings in this segment, being attractively designed and made of quality materials. My XSE tester is further gussied up with red stitching on the door panels, dashboard and elsewhere, plus the seats are covered in SofTex imitation leather, which not only feels nice but makes a convincing argument that cow hides aren’t necessary.
As in more run-of-the-mill RAV4s, the Prime’s rear seat is generously portioned and quite comfortable, with good support, plus plenty of space for knees and noggins. A pair of 2.1-amp USB-A ports serve riders relegated to the back, though the vehicle is fitted with a total of five such outlets, plus XSE models feature Qi wireless charging, so nobody’s phone has to go without juice.

This Toyota’s infotainment system is pretty middling, but the large screen is clear, bright and easy to reach.

When it’s time to make an Ikea run for a load of marginal quality, affordably priced, flat-packed furniture, the RAV4 Prime makes an excellent schlepper. It offers 33.5 cubic feet of hauling space behind the second-row seat, a figure that grows to a claimed 63.2 when the backrests are dropped. These figures are slightly behind what the standard RAV4 and its hybrid counterpart offer. They both max out at 69.8 cubes. All in, the Prime still offers a few more cubic feet of space than the Escape plug-in.
While there’s plenty to like about the Prime’s interior, a few things could be improved. The chicklet-like climate control buttons are simply too small to easily manipulate while driving, and some of the switches on the steering wheel feel incredibly cheap. 
Technology bonanza
On that note, I’m not going to further bludgeon a deceased equine, but as I’ve mentioned many times before, I tend to find Toyota’s multimedia offerings to be unattractive and illogical, and that’s unfortunately still true in the RAV4 Prime XSE. But it’s not all bad news.
This infotainment system is at least speedy, and the tablet-style 9-inch screen it’s splashed across is huge and easy to reach, as it’s mounted high on the dashboard. Lower-end SE models feature an 8-incher. With all that display real estate, Apple CarPlay (which, along with Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility comes standard) is super easy to use, showing up nice and big.

If you still need more screens in your life, don’t fret, because all Prime models feature a reconfigurable 7-inch display nestled in the gauge cluster. It’s clear and easy enough to cycle through the various menus for things like fuel economy and the trip odometer. If that’s not enough, XSE models can even be fitted with a 10-inch color head-up display, which projects relevant driving data onto the windshield. This item is bundled with the $3,765 premium package, which also gets you the aforementioned 6.6-kW charger, ventilated front seats and an awesome digital rearview mirror. The latter features yet another screen behind the glass where a video feed from the reversing camera is displayed to provide a much broader field of view behind the vehicle.
That package also includes a 360-degree camera system, which can be handy for certain parking situations — in theory at least. For some reason, this feature, and even the RAV4’s standard reversing camera, are appallingly bad, super gritty and hard to see on the infotainment screen. This is particularly strange because the digital rearview mirror, which is available on XSE models, looks great, providing a clear, crisp image.
When it comes to advanced driver aids, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard equipment on the RAV4 Prime, bringing things like automatic emergency braking and road-sign recognition to the table. Lane-keeping assist is included, too, and works quite well, even if it feels a bit soft-handed. It doesn’t lock you into the middle of the lane quite as strongly as competing systems do, resulting in more wandering. You also get adaptive cruise control, though it’s rather middling. On the highway, it’s great, seamlessly adjusting vehicle speed to match surrounding vehicles, but in stop-and-go traffic it can be pretty jerky.

Dollars and (common) sense
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is slated to start arriving at dealerships in all 50 states later this month. Keeping things simple, it will be offered in two trims: SE and XSE. My top-shelf tester arrived fitted with all three available options packages, things that inflate its price tag to right around $49,000 including $1,120 in delivery fees. That’s a steep price to pay for what is a mainstream compact crossover SUV, however, that figure does not include any potential discounts. The RAV4 Prime may be eligible for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits, plus other discounts offered by individual states. Of course, you can save a big chunk of change by getting an SE model. They kick off right around $39,195. That’s still a bit pricier than Ford’s entry-level Escape plug-in hybrid, which begins at roughly 35 grand, but the RAV4 does have more power and a nicer interior, plus  Toyota enjoys a better reputation for long-term quality and resale value.
Punchy and efficient, the Prime is easily my pick of today’s RAV4 litter. The addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain has made a good SUV even better. If you can manage the upcharge, this is the RAV4 to get.
