#2022 Cadillac Escalade Changes
Text
People in the notes of my post about Tesla removing the gear selectors from its new cars, asking how that's even legal, clearly have no idea just how incompetent and slow-paced the NHTSA is.
Halogen headlights weren't legal until 1979.
Composite headlights (the uniquely designed ones that aren't the old-school circle or square ones you see on older cars) weren't legal until 1984.
Adaptive High Beams (Matrix Headlights) were only recently legalized, in 2022; and the regulations and testing procedures in order to approve them are so haphazard and over-complicated compared to Europe's that not a single automaker has even made them available.
Side Curtain airbags still are not mandated in the United States.
Turn Signals can be red in the U.S., as opposed to the statistically safer amber which is mandatory in Europe.
Making that worse, those red turn signals are allowed to share lamps with the brake lights. This means if you have your turn signal on, 1/3 of your brake lights can’t do their job because they're too busy doing another job.
There is no law in the United States dictating that an electric car must put on its brake lights when Regen braking. In fact, the law specifically states that only the friction brakes are required to activate brake lights. You can bring a Hyundai Ioniq 5 & 6, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60, and many other EVs to a rapid, complete stop without ever activating the brake lights.
Early model Chevrolet Bolt EVs and some Mercedes-Benz EVs will activate the brake lights appropriately when slowing down, but will deactivate their brake lights once they've come to a complete stop, allowing the car to sit at a standstill in the road without any indicator that it isn't traveling at the same speed as you are.
It's completely up to the automaker to decide how (or even if) to implement regen brake lighting. EVs and Hybrids have been around since the late 1990s and this still hasn't changed.
The US government STILL only evaluates a vehicles crash safety by crash testing it at 35 mph into a flat wall and t-boning it with a barrier representing a 3,000 lb sedan. They don't do an offset frontal test or a truck-barrier side test like the IIHS has been doing for private insurance companies for over a decade.
The NHTSA performs ZERO pedestrian crash safety tests like EuroNCAP does.
Oh, and on the topic of gear selectors, those aren't regulated at all. Here are some examples from modern cars, both electric and not:
BMW i3 & Nissan LEAF (Electric):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toyota Prius (Hybrid) & Honda Clarity (Plug-in Hybrid):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RAM 1500 & Cadillac Escalade (Gasoline):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The automotive rules of the American government are pure chaos, and that’s if they're even there at all. If you're seriously asking how Tesla can allow a car to select reverse on its own, and then put the manual override in the touch screen, I mean, that's just scratching the surface.
If you wanna learn more, Technology Connections on YouTube has some great videos on the Turn Signal issue, the EV Regen brake light issue, and the history of the headlight regulations. I highly recommend you check them out because it truly puts into perspective just how awful the NHTSA is at doing its one job: keeping safety standards up-to-date.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Former Friend Kelsey Harris Testifies Tory Lanez Threatened Her With Gun in Car
December 14, 2022 2:42 PM PST
Tumblr media
Judge David Herriford has granted immunity to Kelsey Harris in the ongoing trial for Tory Lanez regarding the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. Harris appeared in court to testify on Wednesday.
via: Rolling Stone
Megan Thee Stallion’s former best friend Kelsey Harris took the witness stand at Tory Lanez’s felony assault trial Wednesday and dropped bombshell testimony that Lanez allegedly threatened to shoot her inside a Cadillac Escalade before gunfire erupted.
Harris, 27, also said it was preposterous to claim she’s the one who opened fire on Megan, wounding the “Savage” rapper in both feet during an alcohol-fueled fight two years ago.
“I mean, it’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous,” Harris testified in a courtroom in downtown Los Angeles — a day after Megan told jurors she saw Lanez point the gun at her and fire.
Harris is a key witness in the high-profile case because she’s the only other close-proximity eyewitness to the events leading up to the shooting who’s confirmed to testify at the trial beyond Megan herself.
She was considered a wildcard ahead of the trial because she was notably tight-lipped over the last two years and has become estranged from Megan despite their former seven-year friendship.
When she first walked into the courtroom Wednesday, Harris was accompanied by criminal lawyer Daniel A. Nardoni. The lawyer said Harris planned to assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Judge David Herriford said he conducted an in-chambers proceeding on the matter and determined Harris’ concerns were “legitimate.” Prosecutors then said they would offer her “use immunity” for her testimony, and she was sworn in as a witness.
“I don’t care to be here today,” Harris told Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta minutes into her examination. She called the trial a “triggering situation,” saying she’s suffering from “anxiety” and dealing with the birth of a child and a recent death. “I just don’t want to be here.”
She then took aim at Megan.
“She’s painted the picture that I betrayed her, she’s painted the picture that I’m this bad person, bad friend, that I took hush money. There are many lies,” she testified.
Ta then asked Harris about other alleged lies. “Were there accusations about you having shot Megan?” she asked.
“There were,” Harris replied.
“How do you feel about them?” Ta inquired.
“I mean, it’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous,” Harris said.
Lanez (real name: Daystar Peterson), 30, sat at the defense table during her testimony. The “Luv” singer has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges alleging he shot Megan with a semiautomatic 9mm handgun, causing great bodily injury; concealed a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharged a firearm with gross negligence.
If convicted as charged, the Alone at Prom rapper is facing the possibility of 22 years and eight months in prison and subsequent deportation since he’s a citizen of Canada.
Dressed in a black ensemble with her hair in a bun, Harris told jurors she and Megan met Tory Lanez at a Roc Nation even in 2020 and became friends. She said Megan tried to set her up with Tory at first. But then she caught Covid and was home in Houston for two or three months. She believes the “dynamic” between Megan and Tory changed while she was away.
She then described the gathering at Kylie Jenner’s house that preceded the shooting. She said everyone was playing beer pong and “having fun,” but she described Megan’s demeanor as being “drunk” and “a little off.”
She said at some point after she passed out inside, Peterson arrived at the mansion. Asked how Peterson was acting, she said, “Tory’s doing his thing — being Tory, flirting.”
“Who was he flirting with,” Ta asked.
“He was flirting with Kylie,” she replied.
Harris testified once Megan said she was ready to leave, the two women departed with Peterson’s driver, leaving Peterson behind. (When Megan testified Tuesday, she disputed this detail, saying Peterson’s driver refused to leave the property without his client.)
Harris said soon after she and Megan left Jenner’s house the first time, Megan told the driver she forgot a “slipper,” so they returned.
She said Megan went inside alone, and “apparently a fight or something happened.”
“She rushed out with Tory,” she testified. “She was like, ‘Bitch, Kylie said we got to get the fuck out.’ I was like, ‘I’m confused.’”
She said the trio then climbed into Peterson’s Cadillac Escalade with the driver, Jauquan Smith, where everyone started arguing.
“The argument that took place inside carried on,” she said, declining to get specific. “There was so much going back and forth, name calling (between) me and Megan, Tory and Megan, Tory and Me, Megan and Tory.”
Ta asked if Harris remembered Tory saying something to the effect of, “Megan, why aren’t you telling your friend about us?”
“Yes, ma’am,” she replied. “(Megan) was just like, ‘Don’t listen to him. Why are you telling her that?’”
Asked what her reaction was, Harris said she was “upset, confused.” She previously testified she and Peterson had been intimate before she caught Covid and went to Houston.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” she said. “He’s just saying that they had a relationship , they were having a relationship. An argument ensues and just continues. Me and her are arguing about her disloyalty.”
She said “a lot of name-calling” broke out, with everyone “taking jabs at each other.” She recalled telling prosecutors that Peterson called the women “bitches” and “hoes.”
Ta then asked Harris about her recorded interview with prosecutors in September.
“Do you remember in this interview with (another prosecutor) and myself, that you mentioned he threatened to shoot you?” Ta asked.
“Do I have to answer that?” Harris said, looking at the judge.
“Yes,” Judge David Herriford said.
“Um, yes, ma’am,” Harris replied, confirming she made the claim Peterson threatened to shoot her.
“And this was in the car, correct?” Ta asked.
“Yes,” she replied.
“What did he do, and what did he say?” Ta asked.
“Can I take my 5th?” Harris replied, leaving the stand to speak with her lawyer. When she returned, Harris again invoked her right against self-incrimination.
“Why don’t you want to answer that question?” Ta asked.
“I don’t want to be here,” Harris responded moments before the judge said it was time to take the afternoon lunch break.

Car Design Trend: Squinting “Eyes”
Tumblr media
Every decade sees new car design trends that come to define that generation of vehicles. In the early 2010’s, over-sized grilles became highly popular as a showcase of brand identity. Lexus and Audi were some of the first pioneers of the now-expected gigantic maw of modern cars. Today, even regular commuter cars that once looked tame, such as the Toyota Avalon, now feature grilles that dominate the vast majority of the front fascia. Looking at various recently redesigned cars, it seems that a new design trend has begun that could potentially define the cars of the ‘20s: a front fascia that leaves the impression of squinting eyes. The front of an automobile generally follows the convention of two sets of lights: primary upper (typically the headlights) and secondary lower (typically the fog lights). This new design direction involves slim upper lights that create a face of intense glare, like a predator stalking its prey.
Cadillac Escalade
Tumblr media
2021 Cadillac Escalade
Tumblr media
2021 Escalade (left) and 2020 Escalade (right)
The Escalade is truly giant, measuring over seventeen and a half feet long and over six feet wide and tall. Considering the hulking proportions, a wide and presentable grille makes sense. So do large and pronounced headlights. The previous model featured both. The new 2021 Escalade retains a large grille but now has slim horizontal headlights, arguably too small for such a sizable vehicle. However, thanks to enlarged daytime running/turn signal lights that extend vertically underneath the headlights, the space left behind is appropriately filled-in. With these new lights, the face of the Escalade has changed. It now has a distinct “squint” that creates a more dramatic expression than before.
Chevy Bolt
Tumblr media
2022 Chevy Bolt
Tumblr media
2022 Bolt (left) and 2021 Bolt (right)
In comparing the new to the outgoing Chevy Bolt, the first immediate change is the “facial” expression, transitioning from a cheerful grin to a fierce glare, thanks to slender upper lights and a downturned grille. Interestingly, the upper lights are only daytime running lights and turn signals, with the larger light assembly below being the headlights themselves. We frequently associate the headlights as a car’s “eyes,” although in the case of the new Bolt, that role is fulfilled by decorative daytime lights.
Hyundai Kona & Santa Fe
Tumblr media
2022 Hyundai Kona
Tumblr media
2021 Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai has been designing cars with narrow lights for some years now. The Kona has featured this design approach since it first debuted in 2017, and the Santa Fe since its fourth generation launched in 2018. Both models have been pushed further into that direction with new facelifts. Now even slimmer and sharper, the updated upper lights create a focused gaze that is especially perceptible in the Santa Fe, with its two sharp daytime running bars. As with the Chevy Bolt, both Hyundais have their headlights below the daytime running lights.
Mitsubishi Outlander
Tumblr media
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander
Tumblr media
2022 Outlander (left) and 2020 Outlander (right)
The recently redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander now has a girthier front fascia that leaves a stronger initial impression than the outgoing model, appearing much more resilient and confident. This is thanks to sleek upper lights that produce an angry squint, large lower headlights, and a thick decorative chrome line, altogether generating a tougher look than before.
Nissan Qashqai
Tumblr media
2022 Nissan Qashqai
Tumblr media
2022 Qashqai (left) and 2020 Qashqai (right)
The Nissan Qashqai, known as Rogue Sport in the US, now features a fresh design for 2022. Looking at the front, the “V-Motion” grille has grown, the air vents on the sides are much sharper, and the lights have been put on a diet. Super slender boomerang lights create a sharp face with a determined expression that compliments the Qashqai’s newfound angularity.
Conclusion
The brain is quite efficient in differentiating one human face from another, but sometimes we see faces in objects or patterns that otherwise don’t have any. This phenomenon is known as Pareidolia, and is the explanation for why we tend to perceive faces in cars. While the overall shape and proportions of a car make up the majority of its design, the headlights and grille are perhaps the most important in their ability to set the overall tone and expression of the design. Looking at cars from this century, and a general evolution one can notice is the move from neutral to angry front fascia expressions. This can be attributed to over-sized grilles that are frequently downturned and inward-slanted headlights, together mimicking an angry human grin. And now, a new face of automotive design has arrived. One that is not only angry, but also stares intensely with squinting “eyes” that create an observant expression. This could become the defining characteristic of front fascia car design of the current decade. Only time will tell.

A Week With: 2021 GMC Yukon AT4
Tumblr media
The Yukon AT4 is GMC’s full-size sport-utility vehicle, and a sibling of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade.
[data-block_610c158f24ace] { }
GMC struck gold with its Denali sub-brand, a top-of-the-line GMC trim level commanding an average transaction price higher than Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and BMW. For 2020, GMC expanded its new AT4 trim level across its line-up, including the Yukon, with prices slightly less than a Denali, but offering much of its premium allure, but with a bit more attention to off-road prowess.
Overview
The Yukon is GMC’s full-size sport-utility vehicle, and a sibling of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. These trucks are cash cows, sharing their mechanical underpinnings with GM’s pickups and boasting similar manners and personality.
Tumblr media
This is no shrinking violet. Opting for the AT4 trim nets an oversized smoked gray grille and off-road styling details.
[data-block_610c15c824acf] { }
For 2021, the Yukon gains an off-road-oriented AT4 model, which offers much, but not all, of the Denali’s luxury, with an emphasis on off-road capability. Yukon trim levels start with the SLE, and climb through SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels except the AT4, which has standard four-wheel drive. Otherwise, it’s a $3,000 option.
Exterior
The Yukon’s aggressive slab-sided styling augments its oversized demeanor. This is no shrinking violet. Opting for the AT4 trim nets an oversized smoked gray grille and off-road styling details. But the best parts of the Yukon’s design details, like its hook-shaped lighting, lend it an updated, modern appearance.
Tumblr media
The cabin’s instrument panel is accented with upscale materials, although it lacks the sort of truly opulent trim you’d expect given its upmarket status.
[data-block_610c15fb24ad0] { }
As you’d expect, the AT4 is fitted with underbody skid plates for ventures off-road, although given its girth, not scratching the side of the vehicle is a bigger concern once the sidewalk ends. Our vehicle had optional power retractable running boards, which are a boon for climbing up to the Yukon’s cabin.
Interior
Boasting three rows of seats and nearly 123 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded, this truck is extraordinarily spacious, with chair-high seating covered in leather and accented with decorative stitching that denotes its upscale status. Head and leg room are generous. The cabin’s instrument panel is accented with upscale materials, although it lacks the sort of truly opulent trim you’d expect given its upmarket status. And some of its plastic trim seemed too downscale for the vehicle’s price and profit margin.
But it’s extraordinarily quiet at speed, at least if your spouse or significant other isn’t nagging you.
Tumblr media
This truck is extraordinarily spacious, with chair-high seating covered in leather and accented with decorative stitching that denotes its upscale status.
[data-block_610c165f24ad1] { }
Notably, much of the Yukon’s opulence comes from the options list, specifically, its $9,145 Premium Plus Package, which adds a dual pane panoramic sunroof, rear seat 12.6-inchHD LCD screens, second-row heated bucket seats and second-row console, along with numerous other items.
Powertrain
The AT4 comes with a standard overhead-valve 5.3-liter V-8, 10-speed automatic and four-wheel drive. The Yukon AT4 can tow up to 7,700 pounds and has a substantial 1,702 pound payload rating. Other Yukon models can tow as much as 8,200 pounds. Opting for the pricier Denali nets a more powerful 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8. Other trim levels can be fitted with a 3.0-liter dual-overhead-cam inline 6-cylinder turbodiesel rated at 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
Safety and Technology
Tumblr media
The AT4 comes with a standard overhead-valve 5.3-liter V-8, 10-speed automatic and four-wheel drive.
[data-block_610c16e224ad2] { }
Given the AT4’s price, you’d expect a mountain of standard driver-assistance safety gear — and you get it: automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, front and rear park assist, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, automatic high beams, lane-change alert, side blind zone alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, safety alert seat, head-up display and rear pedestrian alert are all standard. The test vehicle included optional trailer side blind zone alert, an in-vehicle trailering app, a trailer brake controller, trailer hitch guidance and a head-up display.
The Yukon is equipped to keep you in touch with the wireless world with a standard 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, as well as standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and navigation system are optional.
Tumblr media
The Premium Plus Package, which adds a dual pane panoramic sunroof, rear seat 12.6-inchHD LCD screens, second-row heated bucket seats and second-row console.
[data-block_610c174a24ad3] { }
Driving Impressions
The Yukon AT4’s size is ever-present, easily filling lanes and parking spaces. So, driving in urban environments calls for care. There’s decent power when launching from a standing start, and there’s more than enough power once the 10-speed transmission downshifts. Fuel economy is unremarkable, coming in at 16.1 mpg, which included a fair amount of highway driving.
Body lean is evident in corners, and the suspension’s off-road tuning produces less undulation over bumps than you might expect, at least with the optional air suspension and electronic limited slip differential. Steering lacks feel but is nicely weighted and quick enough for its task. The AT4’s air suspension system raises ride height by an additional two inches vs. the standard suspension.
When combined with the Yukon’s garden-shed-like size and styling, it can make people or objects impossible to see near the vehicle without its surround-view cameras. Notably, the Yukon now uses a multi-link rear suspension that also improves ride quality compared to previous renditions.
2021 GMC Yukon AT4 specifications:

Wrap Up
The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 is another unique flavor among GM SUVs, yet it doesn’t seem to be particularly compelling. Like its stablemates, it’s sizable. This can be felt in its handling and seen in its intimidating presence that it presents to other drivers. Fuel economy is nothing special, although the V-8 furnishes good power. If the AT4 catches your fancy, you’ll find it to be a roomy, comfortable, quiet and capable upmarket SUV.
2021 GMC Yukon AT4 — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the AT4 package on the Yukon?
Second only to the Yukon Denali, the Yukon AT4 offers most of the Denali’s technology and luxury at a price that costs at least $3,600 to $6,600 less, depending on whether you order rear-wheel or all-wheel drive on the Denali.
What is the difference between Yukon AT4 and Denali?
The AT4 comes solely with four-wheel drive, as it emphasizes off-road agility with a heavy dose of luxury. The Denali is the Yukon’s most opulent model and can be fitted with rear-wheel drive. The biggest difference is its driveline. The AT4 comes solely with a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8, while the Denali has a more-powerful 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8.
Is a GMC Yukon AT4 reliable?
Consumer Reports and other sources rates the GMC Yukon as having below average reliability.

2022 Cadillac Escalade Might Get High-Performance Version
After the recent complete redesign, the 2022 Cadillac Escalade will represent the second production year of the generation. Therefore, it’s hard to expect significant changes. Most likely, things will remain the same, though we can hear rumors about the high-performance version, which would come with the famous “V” badge. However, that’s still a rumor, and shouldn’t be taken for granted. On the…
