Open House: 2250 Nichols Canyon, Hollywood Hills
This house was a complete surprise, especially since I used to live down the street and passed it almost every day.
Tumblr media
One of the greatest kitchens I've ever seen in a home. Traditional yet modern. The lighting was exquisite, almost scientific. The stainless steel cabinets, wood ceiling, and white marble all just somehow work!
Tumblr media
With a separate prep area behind a (yes, I know, but it's okay in this use) set of barn doors. Your dishwasher can run and disturb no one.
Tumblr media
Immediately off the kitchen is this zen garden. Has almost a hotel quality to it with the fountains and lush greenery. Great use of a narrow lot.
Tumblr media
Absolutely incredible lighting. Look closely. Agent said "those are the bulbs Newsom banned!"
Tumblr media
Lighting all around was very futuristic.
Tumblr media
This was I think the master bedroom, but it had two similarly-sized bedrooms. Again with the unique lighting, including skylights with shades.
Tumblr media
You are not mentally nor emotionally prepared for this bathtub.
Tumblr media
I still can't get over it.
Tumblr media
More interesting lighting and mirrored sinks! Which somehow escaped the early-2010s trend of mirrored everything and look like the future again.
Tumblr media
Bathroom two has this fabulous glass sinks. I believe if you have a smaller space you can really get interesting with the materials, especially if you're buying only one.
Tumblr media
Up here you can embrace the full majesty of living in the Hills.
Tumblr media
Garage in the front is detached, with laundry and storage all the way up to the ceiling. Perfect for Costco runs.
You're also not prepared for what's in the backyard...
Tumblr media
A fully separate, self-contained...store?!
Yes.
The backyard has a workspace that looks like an upscale London clothing store, or art gallery, or cafe, right underneath the house and off the back patio.
For an unassuming house, this was full of surprises.

Legal Response to Florida’s Legislation on Transgender Rights: An Early Sign of What is to Come?
By Kensington Jones, New York University Class of 2025
October 16, 2023
Tumblr media
Transgender rights have increasingly become a more controversial topic as states continuously pass legislation that clarifies or limits these rights. Florida in particular has passed a significant amount of this type of legislation recently, which has led to both political and legal responses from local communities. More specifically, many transgender rights activists have decided to challenge Florida’s new legislation on the political stage through protests and on the legal stage through lawsuits. This past week, activists took to Orlando to protest against a law that affected access to the bathroom for transgender people. These activists also filed a lawsuit stating that this new legislation, also known as the “bathroom ban,” is unconstitutional.
Looking at past trends in Florida, it appears as if political responses are becoming a more common way to oppose this emerging legislation. If political responses are becoming more common, then it is possible that legal responses may become more commonplace as well. A future in which more people start to challenge the constitutionality of existing or new legislation on transgender rights may be imminent for Florida.

The market is expanding due to the emerging trend of concept bathrooms, expansion of bathroom boutiques, rise in home sales, and expansion of internet retail. However, the market’s expansion is constrained by strict rules combined with environmental concerns. On the other hand, it is anticipated that prospects for business expansion on internet platforms will present opportunities for market expansion.

A Bridge Too Far

Teachers Say TK Program for 4-Year-Olds Has Been Rushed
On a cool January evening, about a hundred San Diego Unified educators gathered at the Mission Valley headquarters of the San Diego Education Association, the union that represents the district’s teachers. Many attendees showed up clad in red, the union’s trademark color. But it wasn’t a standard union meeting. That night, San Diego Unified Superintendent Lamont Jackson and other district top staff were also in attendance.
Teachers gathered to advocate for changes to the district’s universal transitional kindergarten program, a new grade the state created for 4-year-olds. “This isn’t a typical meeting where the district leader talks and we listen,” SDEA wrote in a Facebook post. “This time the shoe is on the other foot – we’re going to talk, and they’re going to listen!”
Some San Diego Unified officials have big hopes for the program, which it rolled out last year, three years earlier than the state required. More than just an isolated increase in enrollment, which UTK clearly provided, officials view it as a way to combat a long-term trend of enrollment decline. If they can get kids into the district early and impress parents with the instructional quality, the logic goes, maybe they’ll stick around long term. But the opposite could also happen. A poor program could repel parents from the district.
But beneath the confidence of some officials, San Diego Unified educators are frustrated. From a curriculum some say is virtually nonexistent or simply repurposed from kindergarten, inadequate supplies that leave them buying age-appropriate toys with their own money and insufficient training and staff, many educators view the rollout of the program as rushed and haphazard.
“The district doesn’t seem to have a clear vision and direction, or a communication system for UTK,” said Lisa Morris, a UTK teacher at the district.
Concerns About Staffing and Training
Over and over, teachers coming out of the meeting spoke about a lack of staff. Currently, each of San Diego Unified’s UTK classrooms has one credentialed teacher, who often have experience teaching kindergarten, and one early childhood education teacher. These two co-teachers are in charge of up to 24 children. This ratio isn’t unique to SDUSD. It’s the benchmark created by California’s UTK program, with a requirement that schools reduce the ratio to 10 children for every one adult by 2025.
Still, many San Diego Unified educators feel the current ratio isn’t working. Some said they’ve had to skip lunch breaks, while others said there aren’t enough adults to properly take care of children during recess, when teachers should be taking breaks. “At a lot of the schools, 4-year-olds have to go by themselves out of the classroom to find a bathroom on campus,” Morris said.
This staffing trouble is compounded in special education, where some kids may have behavioral issues that need more attention. “Special Ed programs are now mainstreamed in the UTK, which is fantastic, and teachers support that. But with the staffing shortage, there’s just no support for them,” Morris said.
Wendy Aardappel said it feels as if the district is building the UTK program on the fly – and had they not accepted all 4-year-olds in year one, the flight may have been smoother. “If they had rolled it out more slowly, even though they’re still flying the plane and building it, they would have had more room to fly lower down to the ground,” Aardappel said.
“San Diego Unified is committed to ensuring the success of UTK,” San Diego Unified communications director Maureen Magee wrote in a statement. “The feedback from SDEA will help the district strengthen UTK for educators, students, and families. The district looks forward to ongoing collaboration with SDEA as it develops solutions for additional resources and training to support UTK.”
Aardappel has been teaching for 22 years, but this was her first year teaching transitional kindergarten. “I was super excited that we were going to be able to reach the youngest learners,” Aardappel said. “But I didn’t know how it was going to work.” She, like other UTK teachers, feels the district hasn’t provided the amount of training they’ve needed to step into this new classroom environment. And when they have provided trainings, Aardappel hasn’t been able to attend because they’ve been at times when she’s had to pick up her own kids from school, and the district hasn’t recorded them.
Teachers in UTK classrooms are also contending with another big change that many have no experience with – now co-teaching classrooms. According to Morris, the union had an MOU with the district that laid out some of the elements it hoped to see in the UTK rollout. One of the requests was for training, not only for newly paired co-teachers, but for those who hadn’t worked in early childhood classrooms. The district was supposed to provide training shortly after school started, but eventually the union had to file a grievance to get the district to provide it.
But instead of the in-person hands-on training that allowed co-teachers to collaborate that educators had hoped for, the district simply gave teachers a day off and held a training on Zoom. “So it wasn’t like (the co-teachers) could really work together and build on things,” Morris said. “It was not the training that we had envisioned.”
A Lack of Curriculum and Supplies
One of the chief concerns expressed about SDUSD’s UTK program is that the curriculum is not developmentally appropriate for 4-year-olds and bears more resemblance to that of a kindergarten class than to the experiential, play-based learning children of that age need.
“There’s a disconnect in what the space between preschool and kindergarten is supposed to look like,” said UTK teacher Sonia Bouchard.
While Morris said there is some curriculum, she said that the standards they’re supposed to expect of children aren’t clear. “What we have now is almost like just a modified version of kindergarten,” Morris said. “How do we prioritize children’s need (for) social emotional learning versus their math and reading sklls at 4-years-old?” she asked.
San Diego Unified board member Richard Barrera has acknowledged that the district’s UTK program isn’t perfect. He said the goal is to blend early childhood development with the academic aspects of kindergarten, but that “it’s a work in progress in terms of the curriculum.”
And beyond the frustrations with curriculum, teachers say they haven’t been provided the kinds of supplies needed to create an enriching experience for 4-year-olds. Aardappel said some money for supplies eventually arrived, but not before she spent $80 of her own money on a play kitchen for her classroom. She recently received an Amazon gift card from a parent and spent it on crayons for her classroom.
What’s more, said Morris, is that if it falls on teachers to provide toys and supplies either by spending their own money or fundraising for them, school sites whose parents are able to donate more will inevitably be able to provide more than others. “There’s a total lack of equity with that,” Morris said. Advocates have pitched universal transitional kindergarten as a tool to combat the achievement gap, but if those inequities persist, Morris said the program may only exacerbate it. Especially because parents with resources have the option of sending their children to high-quality preschool programs, and those who rely on the free care UTK provides will stick with the program.
“In order for educational equity to happen the programs need to be high quality across the district,” Morris said.
Scattered Claps
Morris thinks San Diego Unified’s UTK program is far from a lost cause, in fact she thinks it has the potential to be an “extremely high-quality program.” After all, she’s heard mostly positive things from parents. “It’s just that the rollout was so quick that the resources, the vision, the planning, were unable to keep up,” she said.
Those concerns were widespread at the meeting with Jackson. The mood outside of the meeting was one of frustration, with some teachers saying they felt like Jackson had listened to their concerns but hadn’t necessarily heard them and others saying he’d simply told them what they wanted to hear. “He wasn’t understanding how much help we need,” Aardappel said.
Jackson was “reticent to make any grand gesture of any change,” said Morris. “There was a lot of ‘that’s what we want too, we believe in that too.’ But what we were asking for were commitments,” she said. The one commitment they did receive was that the district would create a joint panel with all stakeholders to collaborate on future changes to the implementation of UTK. But that fell short of what many educators were hoping for.
At the end of the meeting, union officials asked attendees to clap for Jackson if they felt he’d sufficiently committed to solving the problems they’d brought up. Jackson, attendees recalled, received only scattered and lackluster claps. *Reposted article from the VOSD by Jakob McWhinney from January 23, 2023

Get Zonguinied/Zonged
Had a very vivid yet wierd fever dream while having Covid, it went as follows: The year is 2025, a new tik tok trend has started, called The Zonguini. It's a type of prank requiring you to get invited/break into someone else's house, fap in their toilet, cum in it and not flush. Then, you either reveal to them what you did or wait in ambush for the moment they find their cum stained toilet seat. You then take a goblin like pose with knees slightly bent and arms in a downward arch, and proclaim: "You've been ZONGUINIED you BABOON" and then film their devastated reaction and post it on tik tok for views. The trend exploded in the teenagers demographic, and almost all 2005-2015 started to do it. The trend became so widespread amongst Zoomers that people started to put digital codes on their toilets at home to control which guests could go take a piss, and most teenagers started to be denied permission to go the bathroom in someone else's house and told to piss outside, leading to a tremendous decrease in street hygiene. People falling victim to the prank were heavily bullied on social media and being told "Shut up you Zonguinied bitch" became a devastating insult. Being classified, whether rightfully or wrongfully, of being Zonguinied immediately flagged you as a target for cyberbullying and harassment for flocks of Zoomers, and as some sort of lower life form.
People started to live in fear of being Zonguinied and behaviors on both ends grew more and more extreme. The practice started to be banned at schools and on public spaces, public toilets became even more of a dangerous endeavour and were abandonned out of fear. Hight schools started implementing strong regulation in their internal rules to forbid Zonguinification. The word and its substracts entered the Oxford Dictionnary in 2026 as word of the year. Expressions like the threat "Continue and i'll Zonguini you" or plea like "The toilets are at the end of the hallway on the left, but please don't Zonguini them" became common. Before the heavy censorship, the now self titled community of Zonguiners simply shifted the term to the abridged form ZONG! or GET ZONNNNNGED! and called themselves the ZONGERS in places where the word Zonguini was censored.
Schools and public spaces then implemented heavier restrictions, putting time clocks in every bathroom stall they had, that sprayed semi permanent paint on people taking too much time in the toilet, they were then arrested/beaten up for "Public Zonguing". Of Course a lot of Constipated people were falsely arrested, but society deemed it a necessary evil to counter the Diabolical Zoomer Zonguiners/Zongers. They then started to challenge the time clocks by discussing methods to beat the clock and Zonguinied the toilets before being sprayed with paint. Some Speedrunners Zongers became famous streamers, they even made a Hall of fame of the fastest Zonguiners. Cummig at lightning speed was now a sign of greatness for gen Z. I distinctly remember a scene where a doctor ressembling Hugh Neutron was awaiting me for an appointment, but while sitting in the waitroom, i needed to go the the bathroom, but was interrupted by a voice bellowing from his doctor office:
"GO ZONGUINI SOMEONE ELSE'S TOILET". He then chased me out of his office. I later learned that Hugh Neutron had a tragic backstory™ where he had a daugther that killed herself after being Zonguinied. He then became a Vigilante pursuing Zongers and shooting them on sight. Upon killing Zongers with his shotgun, he would always scream: "YOU ZONGUINIED THE WRONG HOUS JIMBO". His ruthless execution of Zonguiners gained public attention and he was soon sold by the media as a heroic vigilante. He quickly gained followers who called themselves the ZONG POLICE, which then merged with the Bonk Police. Zongers started to radicalize as well to fight back against public executions and summary assassination of teenagers which had become common place. The situation escalated to a full on civil war spreading across all countries with access to Tik Tok. Society became divided, the brothers killed the brother, fathers choked their sons with pillows while they slept, their eyes full of tears. Everyone had to put down a friend who made the wrong choice. The world had become so desentivised to violence against 12 to 20 years old that seeing a teenager being shot in the street was now commonplace, and passersby would simply walk around the profaned bodies like they were mere puddles left by a rainy day, and go on about their routine without lifting their eyes from their smartphone. Shooting Zonguers on sight was now considered an act of public duty. All the while Tik tok was heavily pushing the trend with its algorithm as it was their most profitable trend ever. In the end, the Zonguiners/Zonkers were purged, along with 15-20% of the 2005-2015 demographic, causing a heavy population and workforce crisis lasting for the following decades after the purge left such a gap in an entire generation. Decades later, the world collectively decided to forget about this madness. All mentions of the civil war, the purge, of even the letter Z (now replaced worldwide in all usage by the letter S) , was prohibited and serverely punished. The entire event was erased from history books. The memories of the war only subsisted in the minds of traumatized elders, telling war stories to their grandchildren at family reunion, gazing into oblivion as they shiver in horror at the recollection. No care was ever given to people suffering from PTSD due to the war as it would have been a form of recognition of the events. Legend say that Hugh Neutron still scour the earth searching for the last surviving Zongers, and that depressed people wanting to die had to option to Zonguify someone, as the sacrilegious act would no doubt raise the anger of the vengefull divinity, and it would result in a form of assisted suicide, soon dubbed "Zonguini suicide" of "Shadown Realm speedrun". The last bit i remember was realising after thorough investiagtion that the origin for the Zonguini trend was a troll post from the weird chaotic kid in my middle school class, and that he was rejoicing in the whole mess the whole time. As he was sentenced to death, the sheer shock of the revelation was enough to wake me up in a cold sweat. I feel like this fever dream was actually a glimpse of one of the worst possible timeline standing before us. I now fear the year 2025.

2021 Trends in Home Renovation and Interior Design
2020 was a historic and unprecedented year that saw many people worldwide make the shift to working from home. Now that companies know that change can be done effectively, it’s expected that 22% of the American workforce will be working from home by 2025. With all that time spent inside your house, you’ll want it to be a pleasing and relaxing environment. Here are some of the trends of home renovation and interior design for 2021.
Take a maximalist approach
The new trend in decorating is to be colorful, with lots of different patterns to keep rooms interesting to look at. While there is something to be said about minimalism, it can get stale when you’re stuck inside staring at it all day. The maximalist approach says that as long as the colors match, having various patterns and prints in a room can be an eclectic way of bringing some life to your home.
Work from home spaces
With more people working from home for the foreseeable future, there’s an increase in the demand for home offices and spaces for both living and working. Guest bedrooms are being converted into offices, desks, and computers are added to bedrooms and living rooms, and sound insulation is becoming increasingly important to create a calm work environment.
Porcelain counters
This trend is as popular for its practicality as it is for its aesthetic appeal. Large porcelain tiles absorb just 0.1% of bacteria instead of the previously used marble slabs, making them safer for kitchens and bathrooms. Decking out your counters and floors with porcelain tiles makes them cleaner, which is perfect if you have kids or do a lot of work in the kitchen.
Sculpture meets furniture
Everyone loves to dress up their spaces with some art, but after you move in all the furniture, you need you might not have enough room for some beauty. But sculptural furniture is becoming increasingly popular, and it’s functional as well as pleasing to the eye. Lamps, tables, and even chairs and couches can be as comfortable to look at as they are to sit in, turning a humble living room into an art exhibition.
