How do air vent valves work on radiators at home?
Tumblr media
Domestic radiator systems work by circulating hot water heated by a boiler or, in some modern systems, a water heater. This water circulates through a closed pipe system, usually driven by a circulating pump. There should be no air in the pipes, but it enters so frequently that radiator manufacturers fit them with valves to allow it to escape. By regularly opening these valves - usually called bleed valves - the radiators stay warm.
Hydronic heating
Radiators are part of a hot water heating system; these systems are particularly common in your area, but you'll find them all over the country. In a hydronic system, the boiler that supplies the hot water is heated by electricity, gas or oil. Older systems use the natural tendency of hot water to rise to circulate the water, but newer systems have circulating pumps so the heating elements heat up faster. As the pipes form a closed system, they can break as the water heats up. To prevent this, the system has an expansion tank, a small air-filled container into which the pressurised water is directed.
Air in the radiators
When air enters a radiator system, it has a natural tendency to rise to the highest point, i.e. the coils of the radiators on the top floor of the house. As a result, these radiators do not heat properly because the air prevents water from flowing through the coils. Even if they are still working satisfactorily, they may emit knocking and banging noises. These noises usually occur when you switch the system on and off, and are in addition to the knocking noises caused by the expansion of the metal from which the radiator is made.
Using the bleed valves
If a radiator feels colder at the top than at the bottom, this is a sign that air is trapped in the radiator and it needs to be vented. To open the bleed valve, which is located near the top of the heating coil, you will need a special radiator spanner available at most hardware stores - but often a flathead screwdriver will do. The heating must be on for the valve to work. When you open it, steam will pour out until all the air has escaped, then water will follow. Be careful with the steam. When the air is gone and only water comes out, you can close the valve.
Regular maintenance
To keep your radiators working properly, you should bleed them at least twice a year. If you do this, when you open the valve, not much air should escape and you can close it again almost immediately. Some radiators are equipped with self-venting valves. They open as soon as they detect air and close again when water starts to flow. If you are not able to maintain your radiators regularly, you can retrofit one of these valves to any existing radiator.

Removing air in water pipes
Tumblr media
What does air in water pipes sound like?
Air in water pipes probably sounds like a hissing or popping noise coming from the pipes. Causes can range from simple to complex, and the source of the air varies depending on the situation. If you are having your bathroom renovated, this is probably the cause.
How is the air getting into the pipes?
The water has been turned off. New pipes were installed and air was introduced into the system when it was depressurised and drained. Similarly, if your municipality is working on the water pipes in your neighbourhood. Air has been introduced into the system.
Steps to eliminate air in water pipes
In most cases where air in water pipes seems to be the problem, the solution is quite simple - and requires you, the homeowner, to do a few things, the first of which is to close the main water valve in your home.
The main
If you own a home, you should know where the "main line" is - and that it works! The main pipe - or 'shut-off' - is the valve through which water flows into your home. In older homes, the main line is probably a star-shaped gate valve in the style of an old-school garden hose. If you have air in the pipes, close this valve. If it does not close easily or completely, or is calcified from hard water, do not force it. Call a plumber (and replace it with a ball valve with a lever).
Let the air out 1/2 turn at a time
If there is air in the piping, you should systematically release it. Once the mains are shut off, open all the taps by half a turn, both hot and cold. Run the dishwasher.
Run the laundry. Flush all the toilets. Open the hose taps outside. Drain the pot and fridge water pipes.
Fill the water system again
Fill the system again with water from the main pipe when everything is open. Turn the water back on and let it run for 10-15 minutes to make sure everything is working properly. Let the toilets fill up again and flush them again. Now everything should be running normally again, the water is flowing and everything is civilised.
If the noise you heard is water hammer (or pipe hammer), the problem is due to a poorly stabilised pipe or excessive water pressure in the system. If you cannot determine the cause of the noise, call your plumber for a diagnosis.
If you can determine that the water hammer is coming from unsecured piping, installing a water hammer arrester may be the solution. And if you've concluded that the noise is coming from increased water pressure, call your plumber.
If you have a well and the problem of air in the plumbing system persists after following the steps above, the problem may be more complex and limited to your system. In this case, contact your well specialist.

Hubby Jon fixed the hallway desk today (it was wall-mounted and the screws on the right were loose, he put in drywall plugs and reinforced it all) and just now we worked together to try to seal the drain cover in the floor.
Not like, seal it so water can't go through, but seal it so the cats can't pull the cover off and stick their heads down the drain like the idiots they are
Fingers crossed that it holds this time - last time we tried to seal it the cats had the cover ripped off again within an hour of being allowed near it T__T

daily reminder that construction codes are there for a reason, such as 1) having a p-trap in your waste lines is so that sewer gasses don't come back up and into the house and give your laundry room a faint lingering, unpleasant odor
2) having your drain pipes at a downward incline means you don't get standing water in your drain lines, which will pour nasty stagnant water all over you when you go to remove it
3) putting the top of your washing machine drain standpipe above the drain exit point of the machine, so when the washer pumps out the water it doesn't flood the pipe (which is full of stagnant water because its at a backwards incline) subsequently backflowing and spilling out over the course of oh, 15-20 years, causing serious rot issues in the wooden floor
and the subfloor
