Structural and Electrical Damage Flood damage will take a huge toll on the structural foundation of the house. Here the most vulnerable aspects will be loose bulking floors, roofs, cracks, and many other weak elements that will take a heavy blow from the flood attack. Any kind of cracks will let the water inside the wall, where it will damage the electrical outlets. Here it is better to stop touching any wire that is connected to the electrical supplies. These are some of the major places where the flood will have a negative effect. Appliance Water Damage The kitchen has a lot more equipment than just plants and forks. The heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, water heaters, and refrigerators will be compromised by the floodwater. The first thing that people, when the floodwaters get into the house, is to turn off the electricity. This makes the place hundreds of times safer for the appliances in the house and the family members from mistakenly touching them. CDC also asks people to throw any bad food away from the house to reduce the effect of flood damage. Lack of refrigeration will spoil a lot of food. - Mold Contamination It takes around 24 to 48 houses for mold to grow on a damp surface. Building materials, personal clothes, and functionality will be affected by mold contamination. The best way to get rid of the mold is by drying out your belongings after they come in contact with floodwater. You can use the fan or dehumidifiers to prevent the model process but do it once the electrician agrees for you to turn on the electricity. - Water Damage & Septic System Septic tank filters can get clogged with debris after a flood, the clogging in the system will prevent the tank from accepting water. It needs to be inspected and tested as soon as possible to see if it works or not. Testing your water before drinking it will be very critical for your health. Steps you can take after flooding! GTA Restoration Emergency Water Damage Disaster Management Cycle Process Most of the time the severity of the floods forces people to evacuate their house to a safe location. If that is the case then you should not return to your residence until the local authorities allow you to do so. Even if you return to your house, make sure to check everything before thinking about using it. Be cautious and observe the conditions of the house before entering the building. If you see any downed power lines then it is better to avoid them. Water can become electrically charged, stepping on might not be a great idea to do so after flood damage. If you have insurance, then it is time to take a picture of your belongings that were damaged from the flood. Make sure to contact your insurance manager and let them know about the event. Most insurance companies do provide flood insurance policies, but you will not get these features when you are on a standard insurance policy. These are some of the ways a flood will affect your house. Your house will require emergency plumbing to remove all the dangerous parts out of your system. The longer it stays the more damage it will inflict on the house and other accessories attached to the house. Taking care of them is only how you would get your life back together in a house that will be normal and secure to use. Water Damage Categories Something so simple as water can bring plenty of dangerous elements to your house leaving it broken. There are categories of water that you should know to speculate the damage it can do to your place in a  natural disaster. Below you are going to water is categorized into three different parts. Each section shows water in a different state than what it used to be in the previous category. This will give you the clue to how water changes its form once it gets evolved into the next stage. ●     Category #1 - Clean Water Most of the residents have access to clean water as they use it on a daily basis. But an overflowing source of clean water will break the domestic water supply lines, malfunction the appliances, make toils useless. Clean water if not controlled well will deteriorate the structure surfaces and content materials. ●     Category #2 - Gray Water Here, unlike clean water, common water will have a significant degree of chemicals and biological contamination. Overflow of this water will cause discomfort and sickness in a person. This kind of water is also referred to as gray water. Gray water is known to carry microorganisms that come with more harm than any benefits whatsoever. Normally in a house, gray water gets discharged from dishwashers and washing machines, overflow from toilet bowls, condensate water, fire protection sprinkler water. This kind of water contains chemicals and bio-contaminants such as fungal, bacterial, and viral algae. This raises the contamination to an alarming level. Gray water in a flooded structure if not treated well in time will turn into black water. ●     Category #3 Black Water Normally people have 24 to 38 hours to treat the gray water otherwise it will turn into black water. When water is called black water, it contains pathogenic agents arising from sewage and other contaminated water sources affecting the indoor environment. The color of the water will also change, usually, that gives the sign of damaged water. The water in this category includes sewage rainwater mixed with rising water from rivers and streams. All of them work together to create the properties behind black water. The best step to follow after you are having doubts about the water quality in your house after flood damage is to conduct a heavy inspection. The inspection will give you all the clues that you need to make a serious decision at the end. The inspection has to be detailed and it should cover all the aspects of water migration in the house. It must take in the affected materials and the degree of damage water has done to the appliances in the house. This information will paint the final picture of how much it will cost to fix the problem. Here is the list of comprehensive inspections that get performed after water inspection. Each step will help reveal a lot of useful information about water damage in the house. - Identifying the health and safety hazards - Determining the source of water - Inspecting the water damage rate - Analyzing the scope area - Evaluating the materials on the floor - Checking the inventories and other content items - Evaluating the HVAC system. - Checking on the structural materials Process of Dehumidification. After a proper analysis comes emergency plumbing to stop the problem at the right time. Removal of excess water is the only way to restore a house back to its previous state. This will get done by physical methods such as mopping, soaking up the excess moisture from hard surfaces. If the amount of water in the house is beyond the limit of the normal level, then using pumps is the best way to remove the water from the house to the outside. Removing excess water requires a lot of technical equipment. After that comes evaporation. When the excess water is removed then the remaining water must be turned into the liquid to a vapor by the process of evaporation. This gets done by using air-moving equipment. This equipment will successfully remove the moisture in the air making the place moisture-free. Once the moisture is out of the structural materials then it will get into the air, this will then get removed by the process of dehumidification. Failure to remove moisture in the air will result in secondary damage that will present a health hazard in the place. Once the dehumidification process has been completed it is time to control the temperature of the place. The growth of microorganisms is all related to the temperature in the house. Modifying the temperature will reduce the growth of microorganisms. Any structure that has been damaged needs to be monitored for initial assessment and evaluation. Sewage Backup Contamination Clean-up! GTA Restoration Emergency Flooding Disaster Management Cycle Process Water damage is well known to most people. As it can create hazardous situations faster and risk the health of the people living in the house or in an apartment. Because water carries plenty of microorganisms that help it to grow to further levels. It can also carry plenty of pathogens and allergens that are harmful to humans. These are the ways something as simple as water can create a biohazard in the living environment. Sewage problems require appropriate actions that will suppress the extensive damage to the furnishing and other parts of the building in time. The cause behind the problem will not show up after the elapse of several days. Not taking any action will make the matter much worse where disease-causing microorganisms will soon start to take place in the area. The water inside found in the building wall will help the microbial to grow on structural materials and contents. Which takes us to the sewage control in the house. Controlling the content of sewage will keep the environment safe from getting any sort of harm. There are three ways this problem can be dealt with in the worst-case scenario events. Different scenarios will require their own way of dealing with the problem instead of enhancing it, Case #1 - Kitchen Sink Backup Sewage Contamination This is where waste is found in one specific location and is contained. There are no traces of waste in other areas of the building structure.  Samm amount of waste leads to less exposure and less contact time. If the contact time is less, then the waste has not been contaminated with other forms of disinfection making matters worse. The limited quantity of waste can easily be controlled without any sort of potential health risk. Case #2 - Bathroom Sink Backup Sewage Contamination In this case, we see water and waste get involved in the building’s structure and furnishings. This where a limited amount of waste is confined to a small area of the building. Unlike case 1, here we see a small area of the building confined to this situation. But the infiltration of the waste will be difficult to remove as it would be some of the most complex areas of the building. Here decontamination includes drying out all the surfaces that have come in contact with the sewage and use of disinfectant on the carpet. The wall material needs to be evaluated properly, if it is not damaged well then the use of disinfectant will get the job done poorly. If the situation is worse, then the walls need to be replaced. Case #3 - Toilet Backup Sewage Contamination In this situation, waste has been widely dispersed and penetrates the structure and its furnishings. Here humans will be exposed to the raw waste that has penetrated the building and furnishings. Humans will come in contact with pathogenic raw wastes that have penetrated the walls and their furnishing. This case will require a complete evacuation of the occupants from the building. So a proper method can be followed to restore the sewage process completely. The professionals here will have to be equipped with respirators, HEPA cartridges, rubber boots, gloves, splash goggles, and other protective measurements that will keep them safe from catching anything or coming in close with any sort of bacteria. The restoration process here won’t be as easy as in the last two cases. This situation requires better control over the problem, the restoration professionals here have to make sure they don’t puncture wounds during the process. If a staff member has open cuts or sores, then they should stay away from the project. Decontamination using a Disinfectant. In these cases remediation should be processed as soon as possible, the longer the contamination is allowed to be in the environmental area, the greater the damage it will be in the future. Certainly, the rise of microbial growth will affect the cleaner environment of the living space. If the assessment reports the problem to be bigger than the unprotected occupants and workers should evacuate from the affected areas. This should get done in the initial stages of decontamination. After the water removal, any affected materials should be decontaminated by disinfectant spray. Although they will do a fantastic job in reducing the contamination of these objects, they are never the solution for a 100% clean-up. Each material should be evaluated for its contamination level. So effective measurement can be taken afterward. If heavier organic matter is present, then it should be physically removed by using shovels, squeegees, septic pump trucks, wet vacuums, or any moisture extraction machines. If the material is residual organic matter, it can be cleaned by using a disinfectant. The extraction unit must be followed after the disinfectant solution to prevent the migration of contaminants. If an object was part of the heavier organic matter then it must be decontaminated again after the first decontamination using a disinfectant. A thorough cleaning of all contaminated material will keep most of the material safe from infection. After the second application of disinfectant must be followed. Mold Removal & Remediation Flood-damaged houses will need special care to remove the model properly. Not taking quick action will make the mold grow in a larger proportion. If a material stays in the water for longer than three days, then the mold would start appearing on the parts of the model. If it goes untreated, the expansion of mold will begin, and quickly it will create a health hazard for the people living in the area. This will reach a point where it will be much more difficult to control the mold. All of this will happen because of the delay in cleaning up and drying out. If the mold starts to appear on the parts of the house, then it's better to take pictures of the insurance claims. Some insurance companies do not cover mold removal. So if that is the case with yours then taking the action by yourself is the best way to deal with the problem. Mold is a type of fungi that breaks down dead materials. All They need to grow in an environment is the right type of environment. A flooded area makes an excellent breeding ground for mold to grow on and expand to larger areas. They prefer to be in a moisture, nutrient area to be a place to expand. The main ingredient of their growth is moisture. In a flood region, this will be the case in almost every part of the area. But there are ways to deal with mold problems effectively. Depending on the proportion of the mold infection, you can take the action by yourself or give a call to professionals to take care of them. As they will be much more equipped with all the right parts to deal with mold problems and take them out effectively out of the living environment. Here are the steps that get the mold removal process started. - First thing first, safety, you must equip yourself with all the right gear, because at the end of the day, you are dealing with mold. Robert Langevin was scared he might die behind bars.
"I am an urgent case and I am a vulnerable human being. I have rights. This isn't human," he pleaded in writing with Quebec's provincial ombudsman in March from his cell at Bordeaux jail, known officially as the Montreal Detention Centre, where he was awaiting trial.
The 72-year-old from Valleyfield, Que., had heart problems, and he needed daily medical care and an oxygen mask. "I don't want to die here," he wrote.
That was on March 27. A few weeks later, the jail where he was being held was hit by one of the biggest COVID-19 outbreaks in the country. Ninety-six inmates and 39 employees tested positive for the virus — among them, Langevin.
"I couldn't care for my brother. It's like he was abandoned," his sister Pierrette Langevin said in an interview with CBC News.
A preliminary analysis by CBC News suggests that, despite prevention measures such as releasing thousands of low-risk offenders, infection rates are still five times higher in provincial jails and up to nine times higher in federal facilities than in the general population.
Overall, 600 inmates and 229 employees have tested positive for COVID-19 and three people have died in federal or provincial correctional institutions for which data was available, CBC's analysis found.
Confined to cells 24 hours a day
Pierrette Langevin said her older brother was an optimistic man with a big heart who loved throwing dinners and block parties at his home, collected clothing for charity drives and would call the city any time a lamp went out at the neighbourhood playground.
He'd served time for a string of break and enters in his youth but had been keeping to himself and working odd jobs, including as a mechanic, an electrician, a bar manager and a butcher, before being arrested in December on drug-trafficking charges.
The family started worrying after Langevin stopped calling home in early May. They had no idea some inmates at Bordeaux jail were being confined to their cells for 24 hours a day — with no access to phones, laundry or showers — after a first case of COVID-19 was found.
On May 19, they received a call late at night from Montreal's Sacré-Cœur Hospital. On the line was the jail's chaplain, who told them Langevin likely wouldn't make it through the night.
He died in the following hours, too sick to say goodbye to his family.
"It's a shock. How come I couldn't talk to him?" his sister said. "Why didn't the jail tell us he was so sick?"
Higher risk for outbreaks
While the federal and Quebec governments regularly publish detailed figures on testing and confirmed COVID-19 cases in jails and prisons, the rest of the provinces and territories do not. In May and June, CBC News asked every correctional department in the country for its statistics on testing, confirmed cases and number of inmates. They all replied except Nunavut. Several provinces had zero cases to report.
Thirty-nine out of 137 provincial and federal institutions for which data was available, or one in four, reported at least one inmate or employee who tested positive for COVID-19.
"Even before COVID-19, we knew that prison environments were at high risk for outbreaks," said Alexandra Blair, a researcher at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health who's been tracking cases of the virus in federal jails for an upcoming study.
Blair said that much like residents of long-term care homes, inmates are more at risk in part because they live in close quarters with many common areas and interact daily with several employees for their basic needs, such as meals, access to the yard and showers.
"We have a lot of people crowded in small spaces, sometimes in buildings that are older that don't have great ventilation," she said.
"These are also places where everybody eats next to each other. They are perfect environments when you're thinking about something that can be passed on through a cough or droplets."
CBC's figures also show how pervasively the virus can spread behind bars in a given institution: The majority of confirmed cases — more than 80 per cent — are concentrated in two provincial and three federal facilities in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, including Montreal's Bordeaux jail.
Along with Bordeaux, one of Canada's hardest-hit provincial jails is the Ontario Correctional Institute in Brampton, where 91 inmates and 25 employees tested positive for the virus.
The most-impacted federal penitentiaries are the Federal Training Centre in Laval, Que., and B.C.'s Mission medium-security institution — where the data suggests as many as a third of inmates were infected.” - Valérie Ouellet and Joseph Loiero, “COVID-19 taking a toll in prisons, with high infection rates, CBC News analysis shows.” CBC News. Hi! I’m Sam. Nice to meet you! I’ll be playing Xavier Tempest, or as you might know him, Lightning.
Originally, I wanted to type up a short little intro post for him, but it got embarrassingly long once I really got into it, and I didn’t want to clog up the dash with that. If you’re interested in the director’s cut of this post, you can find his extended bullet-point bio HERE. If you’re not currently in the mood to read, here are five key points you should know about him ( to the tune of The Twelve Days of Christmas ).
ONE COUNTRY ROAD
Grew up in the Nova Scotia countryside.
His hometown was nothing but backwoods and open roads. Very country.  Very redneck. Very boring. The only thing it was good for was long drives after fights with his parents, where he could have the roads to himself all night. But most of the time, it just left him wanting more.
His parents were very strict, very faithful Protestants. They raised their children to be humble, polite, and give thanks to God. Xavier rebelled against their strict rules and teachings, which created a lot of tension in the household.
TWO PENNIES TO RUB TOGETHER
Unfortunately, his parents’ love and faith in The Lord did not bless their family with wealth. They were poor, and Xavier couldn’t find much to be thankful for. ( I’m gonna talk to Chels about their jobs and stuff but for now just know they were not doing so well financially )
There’s a lot of resentment, about how his parents couldn’t provide for him as much as he would have liked them to. No fancy school trips. No extravagant holidays. Their financial status brought him guilt, anger, and shame.
This also made Xavier very resourceful. He realized people were more likely to help him if he was charming, and he used that to his advantage. ( He was raised to be a southern gentleman, after all. ) Keep in mind that he is only charming when he wants to be, or when he needs something.
THREE YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL
The boy never did well in school. He struggled with coursework, was distracting to his classmates, was perceived as lazy by his teachers. He became bored with subjects that were too easy for him ( math / science ), and too frustrated by subjects that were too difficult ( English ). He often felt stupid, acting out as the class clown, hiding away his insecurities. And he absolutely hated being picked to read aloud; his dyslexia went unrecognized for years.
Fell in with a bad crowd in the 9th grade. Skipped class a lot. Went to a lot of parties. Tales of what he did at these wild parties sometimes served as Monday morning gossip.
Never graduated from high school. Dropped out when he was 17. Fucked around for a couple of months. Got hired for part-time retail jobs, only to eventually stop showing up and ultimately get fired. Rinse, repeat.
FOUR GREASY SHIRTS
After about 6-8 months of proving everyone right ( that he was, in fact, a loser ), his life picked up a bit.
The local mechanic--an elderly man--saw that Xavier needed some discipline and a purpose, and took him under his wing. The man taught him everything he knew about cars and bikes, and for once, Xavier stopped talking and listened.
Xavier became really interested in tinkering and automobile mechanics, and he worked respectfully under the man for about two years. Maybe he had some hidden potential all this time, but just needed someone to believe in him. ( Or maybe he really is just a lazy sack of shit. Depends on who you ask )
( I’m toying around with the idea of the mechanic mentor dying from a heart attack or something, further encouraging Xavier to leave his hometown, but it’s not set in stone yet. I’d just kinda feel bad for him, ya know. )
When his little brother Ezekiel got a scholarship to a university in Toronto, he decided to go with him. He worked hard to get his G. E. D while Ezekiel finished his senior year, and when he graduated, they packed their bags and moved to the city.
FIVE YEARS OF SHITTY PAY
They started renting a shitty apartment in downtown Toronto. Xavier had never been more in love with the taste of freedom.
Hee started working as a custodian at an electric company when he realized mechanic work wasn’t going to be enough to pay the bills ( read: rent, food, weed )
When he learned that electricians at this company “made bank,” he switched gears and started looking into what it took to become an electrician. He would miss being a mechanic, but the goal here, people, is DOLLA$$
Currently, he’s 23 and working as an Electrician Apprentice. Still makes shit pay, but at least there’s light at the end of the tunnel when he completes his 5-year apprenticeship ( will he complete it? only time will tell )
OH and ( the very first thing Chels and I talked about, the most pressing matter ) - he and his brother have a corgi named Spark! He’s a chubby little thing that gets treated like Toronto royalty. They’d starve themselves before that adorable corgi went without supper. Xavier feeds him human food sometimes. Spoiled little shit.
PERSONALITY & FUN FACTS
( + ) Charming, Lively, Spontaneous
( - ) Reckless, Temperamental, Unpredictable
Will charm the pants off of you to get what he wants: a hottie’s number for a date, a waitress for a little extra whipped cream on an ice cream sundae ( that’s not a euphemism; he just likes his sweets--but he likes sex, too. a lot ).
Messy: Messy cook. Messy eater. Messy roommate. There is laundry all over the floor of his bedroom. PLEASE clean his house.
Loves cooking, driving, bacon, coffee ( light and sweet, but he’ll swear up and down until the day he dies that he takes it black ). Loathes vegetables.
Still not used to sitting in Toronto traffic, but will never go back to the country. Has not seen his parents in three years ( since he moved )
Likes working out to use up all his extra energy.
Can’t sit still. Always doing something. Some days might go to work, come home and change clothes, stay out all night ( get a lil’ fucked up ), come home and nap for a an hour, then go back to work. Might not see his brother/dog for over 24 hours. Tries to remember to call.
Can solve a Rubix Cube in under 2 minutes--under 1 minute if he’s trying to impress. Also not too shabby with a yo-yo.
Not super dependable when it comes to deadlines or doing things at a certain time ( but is usually apologetic about it )
Smarter than he lets on. Good memorization of random facts. Likes to watch Jeopardy. Sometimes lacking in common sense department.
POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS
Classmates who knew him as a total fuck-up from high school ( fellow Bad Seeds, opposing Good Eggs, lab partners, whomever )
Those People You Only Know From Seeing Them at Parties
Self-destructive friends who might encourage him to dabble into hardcore, addictive drugs ( I want to see him fall )
An ex-girlfriend he probably didn’t take seriously and most likely cheated on
Anything!! I have a few things in mind for specific connections, and I’ll probably think of more once we start chit-chatting one-on-one ( so talk 2 me tell me ur name )
holy cannoli this was supposed to be short!!!! ahh!!!!!
ACTUAL TL;DR: Nova Scotia boonies redneck. Broke as hell. Real charmer when he wants something. Blunt when he doesn’t. Smart but doesn’t apply himself. Sex drugs & rock ‘n roll. Protective of his little brother. Loves bacon. Hates vegetables. Good with cars. Electrician Apprentice. Has a corgi. See his BIO and STATS pages for more info.
Okay, that’s all! I swear! Feel free to message me! Let’s be friends and talk about our characters! Or if you’re shy, LIKE this post and I’ll come to you! ( If you made it this far, you’re my frickin’ hero!! )

This New Database Spotlights People of Colour in the Canadian Entertainment Industry
When it comes to the lack of representation of people of colour in the film and television industry, both in front of and behind the camera, there’s an all too familiar refrain from the industry’s gatekeepers: we don’t know where to look for them. Tonya Williams wants to take that excuse out of the equation. With the launch of her Access Reelworld database, the most complete online database of Black, Indigenous, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latinx and other racially diverse communities in the Canadian entertainment industry, a more inclusive and diverse industry is one step closer within reach.
In a matter of a few weeks, the database has already been populated with 400 names of people of colour working in departments like costume design, cinematography and animation, whom current and upcoming productions can reach out to to fill roles on their teams.

Williams, a Black actress who has been a part of the entertainment industry since the 1970s (you may recognize her from her two-decade run as Dr. Olivia Barber Hastings on The Young and The Restless), had the idea for this database back in 2001 when she founded the Reelworld Film Festival, the only film festival to exclusively showcase and promote racially diverse Canadian creators. Here’s why she launched the Access Reelworld database now, why she dislikes the catchall term BIPOC, and her hopes for the industry moving forward.
Tell us a bit about the Reelworld Film Festival and why you founded it.
When I founded the festival in 2001 there were a lot of inequities happening in Toronto. There was very little representation, even less behind the cameras, of Black and Indigenous people, Asian, South Asian, Latinx people of colour. I wanted to create a platform that would push towards changing that. We have a Reelworld Screen Institute as well and between the two of them, we not only screen films and celebrate Canadian filmmakers, but we also create professional development and incubator programs, and do a lot of advocacy work, working behind the scenes with our government to create more access to funding.
How does the Access Reelworld database work and what are the categories it covers?
People were always saying ‘we don’t know where the talent is, and we’d hire more of it if we knew.’ But there was never any funding for it, and the technology was too expensive back in 2001. Finally last year we were able to get a little bit of money, and now the technology has changed so drastically that we were able to create a really great database. The creation of the database took a good ten months. I had to explain to the web developer how the entertainment industry worksI had to explain that it’s not like a dating app, it’s not like real estate, and take them through all the different levels of the industry. We came up with 75 categories and I’m sure there are more. Whenever somebody emails us saying we don’t have a particular category, we add it. We have everyone in there from a set medic to stunts people to assistants to hair and makeup artists—everything that you imagine hands could touch in a production. We’re also working on a job board, which we’re in the final stages of perfecting.

Reelworld is committed to supporting & developing talent. We love this #flashbackfriday photo of Lyriq Bent, who is thriving as an actor in LA. Help us to create space for more Canadian Black, Indigenous, Asian, South Asian, MIddle Eastern & Latinx stars. Sign up for our database, Access Reelworld at www.accessreelworld.ca.

Where do you think the industry needs to go from here in terms of next steps?
I don’t like the term BIPOC; the minute I heard that term I knew we were going to have trouble. Somebody hires one Asian person and they feel they’ve hired all the BIPOC people they need. We need to remind them that they need to be hiring Black people and Indigenous people and Asian people… you don’t get away with hiring one person and patting yourself on the back like you’ve accomplished something. You know when you put a garden together, you’re very meticulous: these flowers go here and then there’s a little boundary, and then these other flowers… We don’t just throw seeds out randomly. We really care for a garden and I think that’s what real diversity looks like. Do we have all the shades in our garden? It’s not going to happen naturally. Gardens don’t just happen like that. You have to carefully prune and pull out the weeds and make sure everything is shaped beautifully, and I think it takes that kind of diligence. I hear the way people at the top are talking about making change and I know they still don’t get it. Because they’re like ‘we’re going to create more inclusion, we’re going to create more diversity’ but those are just words. I don’t hear the strategic plan that is going to make that happen.
There have been a lot of conversations in the industry recently about the struggles that Black actors face on set when it comes to hair and makeup, in terms of there not being any HMU artists who know how to work with textured hair and darker skin tones. What was your experience in that regard?
It’s hard now, it was impossible before. Wigs were an absolute, you needed to get all kinds of different wigs. Even when I worked on Black productions, they were like ‘where are your wigs?’ That was just a given. It’s so built in. It’s been one of the hardest things to change. By the time I got to The Young and The Restless I’d already been in the business 15 years so I knew how to do my hair—whether it was my own natural hair or wigs—and my own makeup. I’ve also been on sets where there were Black people doing hair and they did not know how to do Black hair. Just because you’re Black doesn’t mean you know how to do Black hair or makeup. Because a lot of those Black people weren’t taught—they went to hair school and were only taught on white hair. As Black actresses we do talk among ourselves about what it must feel like to just roll out of bed, wash your hair, get in the car and go to the studio and they blow dry it and fix it. We don’t know what that reality is, it doesn’t exist for us. My day starts two hours before a white actress’s day starts.
What are some of the positive changes you’ve seen over your many decades in the industry, and what more would you like to see?
I think just the awareness, people talking about things. People didn’t even talk about these things before, they just thought we were being difficult. Now people are starting to recognize it as a problem. But I would rather hear them say ‘we don’t know how to fix it’ than some of the things they say, which are just words they think we want to hear. Throwing out numbers and percentages and the words inclusion and diversity is meaningless. It’s got to be done with precision. Go back to the garden. And I think we’ll know the change is there when we feel it.

These average salaries are intended to give you an idea of how much you can earn. However, your income will greatly depend on your knowledge, skills, and any prior work experience.

Keeping with time schedules and punctuality are highly appreciated traits. The managers are also just in treating their team members. While employee feedback is also taken positively.
Communication
Managers care a lot about the work environment. Therefore, it’s very important to keep a positive attitude towards your colleagues, your manager, and your work. Communication also is also about processing of information. If you are not completely satisfied with an answer you have got from anybody at work or you don’t fully understand something, you must ask questions to get clarity.

Photo A Day Challenge: Light…
The light bulb…
Picture taken at Thomas Edison National Historic Park in West Orange, New Jersey.
**On July 24, 1874 a Canadian patent was filed by a Toronto medical electrician named Henry Woodward and a colleague Mathew Evans. They built their lamps with different sizes and shapes of carbon rods held between electrodes in glass cylinders filled with nitrogen. Woodward and Evans attempted to commercialize their lamp, but were unsuccessful. They eventually sold their patent to Edison in 1879.
In 1878, Thomas Edison began serious research into developing a practical incandescent lamp and on October 14, 1878, Edison filed his first patent application for “Improvement In Electric Lights”. However, he continued to test several types of material for metal filaments to improve upon his original design and by Nov 4, 1879, he filed another U.S. patent for an electric lamp using “a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected … to platina contact wires.”
Although the patent described several ways of creating the carbon filament including using “cotton and linen thread, wood splints, papers coiled in various ways,” it was not until several months after the patent was granted that Edison and his team discovered that a carbonized bamboo filament could last over 1200 hours.
This discovery marked the beginning of commerically manufactured light bulbs and in 1880, Thomas Edison’s company, Edison Electric Light Company begain marketing its new product.
