Furano Trip
To make the most of my two days off I decided to drive to Furano after finishing work, to ensure I would be able to see the lavender first thing in the morning. I packed up the car and had a shower, then headed off. About 5 minutes after leaving home, I approached a cat sitting calmly in the middle of my lane, I screeched to a stop and the cat didn’t run so I rolled over the top and then it must’ve slunk away. It was enough to give me a fright, I drove a little slower from that point on since I was still in town. Well, after clearing Kutchan town I was on a country road on the way towards the mountains and the second cat was not as lucky... He darted out from a farmhouse and I saw his little ginger face in the split second before he bounced into the right front tyre. There was a bit of a thud but no bump. He ran off into the bushes. Very shakily I pulled over and went to investigate, there was a woman there who could speak English and she said she had seen him run down into the bushes surrounding the farm. I left with an eerie feeling that maybe I should go back home and drive tomorrow, like these cats were meant to be a sign. I drove on for about an hour, my lights on highbeam and my eyes on high alert – I was more concerned about deer now. I pulled over after another hour or so and sent a message to my mum just in case the universe was conspiring, and then the spookiest part... As I was sitting in the car recording my message, a third cat came running towards me! In the middle of nowhere! Very carefully I drove around it and back on to the road and that was thankfully the last cat I saw on the drive. After that it was smooth, I stopped for a late night McDonald’s at Chitose and then drove on until I found a nice big parking lot with a 24 hour toilet. There were bugs everywhere in the heat of a warm summer’s night, flying around the lights of the toilet building. I slept quite well all things considered.
The next morning I woke up around 6am when the heat in the car simply became too much to bear. It was gearing up to be at least 30 degrees today. Somehow the exact time I wanted to use the bathroom there was a cleaning crew surrounding it and I could just quickly brush my teeth and wash my face before leaving. I started by visiting a large campground park that I had intended on staying at last night but didn’t quite reach there, and luckily I hadn’t because it was a crowded carpark with a far worse toilet! I drove up to the first lavender field of the day, Choei Lavender Farm. There was a winding road up the back to reach a mountaintop viewpoint overlooking the lavender and the Kamifurano township. I battled to take some videos with my GoPro that seemed to be struggling in the heat already – by 8am it was already 28 degrees. Japan doesn’t do daylight savings so it means that sunrise is about 3am in summer so the hottest part of the day is earlier in the morning than you would expect. I parked down at the bottom of this farm and took a few more photos although it wasn’t possible to get a good angle of the word “Kamifurano” spelled out in Hiragana in large lettering filled with colourful flowers. I decided to get some gas because Kimbo was already thirsty again, and then arrived at Farm Tomita just before 9am. As Google maps directed me there, she made sure to inform me “this destination will be closed when you arrive” but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to wait for 10 minutes in the carpark. Well it seemed that the Japanese had the same idea! The main parking lot was already full and the parking attendant waved his lightsaber to guide me right down to the back lot. Furano has great flower fields but not much shade so poor Kimbo had to suffer in the sun while I went for a walk around. By now it was 30 degrees and humid. Japanese people carried umbrellas and wore full length sleeves in the heat. Many people were dressed up in their Sunday best to take family photos in the lavender with a bouquet purchased from the gift shop for 500 yen. Dogs were posed for photos and then taken back into the shade where they could lie down. I took my photos and walked around the perimeter but it was far too hot for me so I had to browse in one of the air conditioned gift shops to cool down. I tried to walk up the side of one of the more shady lavender fields but it was deceivingly steep and I struggled to get halfway! It was time for an ice cream break by 9.30am, and of course I had to try the lavender ice cream again. It was a soft purple colour, with a mild taste and started dripping immediately. Luckily there was a shady seat to sit and eat it and appreciate the views of Kamifurano and the mountains in the distance. In winter Furano is also a hugely popular ski resort that is often paired with Niseko for longer snowsports trips. To distract my thoughts, a child squeaked in with those annoying shoes that sound like you’re standing on a plush toy squeaker with every step. All heads turned to look at the child, who promptly trips up and starts scream-crying uncontrollably. And now my relaxing ice cream break was ruined. I walked around a little bit more and bought a few postcards and lavender things to send home then sat down for a drink and a potato croquette for an early lunch. I had been waiting around for a bit because I wanted to visit a café nearby that opened only at 12pm. It was relaxing anyway to sit and watch Japanese people enjoying the lavender and trying to get the best photos when the entirety of the scene is purple!
I drove to Kamifurano town and parked at the post office as I couldn’t find any free parking lots near the Polar Coffee café, I withdrew some cash and then walked there as a loud alarm sounded through the city – presumably a test as no one seemed even mildly concerned. On Instagram yesterday I’d seen that my colleagues Tim and Nick had come to this café which is owned by a Taiwanese guy (they’re also Taiwanese) and it had a good vibe from their photos so I was determined to try! It was even better than expected, I ordered a flat white and it was not only very Instagrammable but also cheaper than anywhere in Niseko. Cooling down in the air conditioned café was also a highlight. After my coffee I made the long drive to Asahikawa to see a rice field. But not just any rice field, one planted very carefully with different varieties of rice that had coloured shoots. The reason I made this long drive just for a rice field is because the second half of July is the perfect time to view such rice fields - the rice shoots have grown in and are brightly coloured at this time. I was very proud of myself as I directed myself to the field. Although a lot of people online said it was so hard to find, I had no trouble at all. Actually my Google map would have led me exactly there but I followed some signposts instead that said “tanbo art” on them in Japanese, and the reason I was so proud – I could actually read what it said! I was the only person there so I parked where I pleased and climbed up the viewing platform to see the art. Unfortunately the field was so wide that it was hard to take a photo of the entire thing, even with panorama! The design changes each year and this time it was a couple of anime characters, there was also something written way off to the left that wasn’t really visible from the platform and I could only see “2021” and some squashed Japanese characters from the ground. Anyhow, it was a very unique attraction and I was glad I had made the trip to see it. My next destination was the Ningle Terrace; a series of log cabin-esque boutique shops arranged along a wooden walkway in the forest. If my phone wasn’t so terrible with capturing greenery then it would’ve been another Instagram-worthy place to see but other than a cool photos the souvenirs were quite expensive and many of the shops were closed anyway. I took a long drive from Furano to Obihiro for tomorrow’s adventure and stopped at a mall for a KFC dinner. Usually Japanese KFC is great, but this one had unfriendly staff and they gave me a half frozen burger which I had to send back for a fresh one. I bought a few supermarket supplies and then drove towards the small Obihiro airport once it was dark to find a suitable parking space for the night. I passed the airport parking lot as it there were too many floodlights which would make it hard to sleep, further up the road there was a small shoulder so I stayed there in the pitch black instead, with a nice forest on either side. I got out of the car to change into my shorts to sleep but I heard rustling in the bushes and freaked out! Instead I changed inside with the doors locked. I felt a little uneasy falling asleep as there had been searchlights beaming around the sky that I’d assumed were to find intruders sneaking into the abandoned Gluck Kingdom theme park and I worried someone would knock on my car window and tell me to move on. Of course I didn’t want to get caught on my urban exploring but I thought “you would have to be absolutely insane to venture in there at night”. As it turned out though, the lights were for the airport perimeter security and nothing to do with the theme park coincidentally located about a kilometre opposite.

Born abroad car insurance premiums higher?
I have been gathering quotes for car insurance online on confused and was delighted to see the price down at 615 for once as I have been getting car insurance every year since the age 18 and it has always been over 1000. However, just having a quick check over my details to make sure everything I had entered was correct and then I noticed I had ticked the resident from birth box. I was born in Spain as my mother went over there to work and then had me. I was born in 87 and she took me back home in 88 or 89 roughly. (She is a full British citizen born and raised in UK). As I have no contact with my father and I don't even remember being in Spain or nor can I even speak the language well, I feel fully British and also am regarded as a British citizen. My mum also registered me at a british consulate in april 88, just 6 months after I was born. So I put on the form that I became a resident in 1988. I then calculate the prices again and the insurance quotes shoot up with 955 being the cheapest and the rest going up to 1000. I then think back to all the years I have been paying the insurance and building up my no claims and being the perfect driver with no claims despite having to pay the shocking premiums that young people have to pay and this makes me absolutely livid that my insurance goes up by 340 to 400 based on the fact that I was born in Spain and spent 1 year of my life there and the rest of the 23 years as British Citizen raised here. I am just wondering if I could get away with just going ahead and saying that I was a resident from Birth as I have a baby on the way and really wish that my premiums were a reasonable ammount for once or I should go through it and just demand that they bring the premiums down to the 615 like originally quoted! It just makes me really annoyed that they can get away with this kind of stuff and I really don't like the fact that I am having to pay higher premiums just for the sake of it. Any advice on this?""

How much will my insurance and maintenance costs be affected by what type of car I get?
I'm about to be 18 and am planning on getting my first car soon. I've been driving for almost 3 years in my parents' cars but need my own for heading off to college and such. I don't know what type of car I want to get, but it's gotta be cheap, old and used, preferably up to $6,000-7,500 at the absolute max. The problem is that I've been really into cars for most of my life and would rather have something a little nicer to start, I mean within the same price range but for example a Mustang, Mitsubishi 3000GT, BMW 3- or 5-Series, etc., rather than the usual Civic or Camry (not that I'd mind one of them either). The problem is that I'm worried the insurance will be way more expensive. The latest quote my dad got was a few weeks ago and it was quite a bit lower than I expected, only like $560/yr., but that was with their old '93 Taurus GL. Will having a sports car or more high-end car affect it really dramatically or will it not make that big a difference as long as my driving record stays good? Also, how much more does it cost to maintain and repair a car like a used BMW than it does just a normal car like an Accord? I've always heard that European cars in particular can be temperamental and finicky if not maintained properly, so I'm just worried that I won't have the money and know-how to have and keep a car like that as my first car.""

Can I get insurance myself at 17?
I'm 16 right now and I have been diagnosed with major depressive. My mom lost her insurance in May last year and I haven't been to a doctor since. My symptoms are getting worse and I attempted suicide a couple months ago (refused to see a doctor afterwards because I didn't want social services to get involved). I have a family history with depression and mood disorders and my condition is only getting worse. I tried to get insurance all summer and fall last year, but I couldn't qualify for medi cal (I live in california) because of my age supposedly and my old doctor refused to sign off on minors consent. I'm wondering if things will be different by the time I turn 17? Will I be more likely to be accepted by then? Is there anything else I can do that won't get my mom arrested and me put into the foster care system? I feel like the social workers have a gun pointed to my back right now.. if I say much more about my problems to them they'll take me, and my little brother. Also CPS is not an option I want nothing to do with them or foster care. I would rather continue on and die in my condition than go to the foster home in my area, I've met kids stuck in that system and continuing on without medical care seems better than living in that hell hole. Day 12
Thurs 16th Jan
Got up nice and early for our 7am breakfast as agreed and met Jorret and Lin in the restaurant. The avocado egg on toast turned up and there was no avocado. Me nearly massively kicked off and threw up a big stink about it as obviously avocado is a human right.
Phil seemed a little croaky after his party campfire the night before but I was too busy tending to my foot to worry about it.
My thorn-in-foot wound was still sore and feeling super sensitive so our new doctor mates (probably the main reason we became friends with them) had a look at it. Lin even had a dig around to try and get any more thorn out. I don’t know if she got much out but I DO know that she should have been an archaeologist instead of a doctor cos that girl can DIG. I think she was looking for a tree sleeping lion in there.
We headed into the park, me and my clubfoot just about squeezed into the car, and the ranger told me and Phil that our 24 hour passes would run out at 11am. Hmm not ideal as we’d probably want to stay in the park till midday...
But anyway, we headed in and the morning light was beautiful. We spotted very quickly some elephants super closer to our car! Then we saw a massive lizard, a little pumba warthog, more antelopes and tiopei, buffalos, loads of birds (Jorret was thrilled) and a snake on the road too (Lin was disgusted).
I spotted Phil with his eyes closed at one point of the drive, hiding behind his sunglasses obviously a bit hungover and tired having gone to bed too late, so I gave him a big nudge and glared at him - how embarrassing if our new mates had seen Phil SLEEPING in the back of their car while they generously took us on SAFARI IN AFRICA. Phew he opened his eyes, we’d got away with it.
Lin & Jorret decided to share the driving for the visit, but were actually too scared to get out of the vehicle to swap seats, so they did this INSIDE the vehicle which was ridiculous and impressive in equal measure.
We left the park near midday and thankfully the guards said nothing at all to us and we had no issue at all. Phew. Got away with that one.
Lunch back at the hotel was quiche, avocado (oi oi someone went shopping) and tomato and was DELICIOUS (honestly, ask the cat).
Phil was in need of an afternoon snooze (weird that) so I just chilled and the guys had a little swim in the pool before heading off for an afternoon safari.
Phil woke up a bit groggy and sweaty and I convinced him we should go for a swim too. The pool had a rubber ring - literally the inner tube from a TYRE - so we hung out there for a bit which felt like a luxury we wouldn’t have often on this trip. Yep lying on a tyre inner tube felt like a luxury.
We got ready for dinner and walked over to the dining area spotting a group of children near the campfire, obviously there to do a performance of some type. Their eyes followed us as we walked over so I have them a wave and they all smiled straight away and waved back. It’s becoming a theme me thinks.
Lin & Jorrit were sat up there having just returned from their afternoon safari, no lions spotted but loads of really boring birds which they were naturally very excited about. I’m JOKING, the birds sounded cool (I mean, I’m only writing that in case they read this). And Jorrit was actually the one who was excited, Lin was definitely just pretending - I’m fairly certain I saw her hide her phone inside their Birds of East Africa book so she could go on Instagram while pretending to read up on vultures and sparrows.
The kids did a show, now I have to say it was a tad too long as they timed it right at the moment everyone was expecting dinner, which I KNOW sounds terrible but its the truth, but I did my best to watch on enthusiastically and it was sweet. I spotted Emma Sausage’s Ugandan spirit animal in there, she danced EXACTLY like Emma I swear it was so weird.
We sat for dinner together with our new friends and had lovely vege curry and rice, but we all ended up leaving some as there was so much. The cat was thrilled, but doesn’t like rice as much as I’d expected.
I completed my bird homework set by Jorrit to identify 5 birds we’d seen that morning - got 3 out of 5 which to be honest I was embarrassed about as it felt like it made me a bloody birdwatcher too now.
As we were all getting on well and it felt like a safe space, I decided to mention that I’d spotted Phil sleeping in the car at one point of our morning safari and to Phil’s surprise, Jorrit immediately said ‘Yeah I know, I saw him too’ then he laughed. I realise now why Jorrit had said a few times ‘Come on Phil, make sure you spot something’. I had thought he was just keen to see more birds like.
Phil was gutted he’d been busted, he was like ‘Oh man I thought I had been super sly about it’.
I then explained to Phil that to make matters worse, after I had nudged him angrily in the car telling him to look out for nature, I had spotted him trying to completely PRETEND he was looking for nature, by turning his body towards the window, hooking his hands on the window edge, and then HANGING his head out the window STILL WITH HIS EYES CLOSED UNDER HIS SUNGLASSES.
I then remembered that I had filmed this exact thing in the car. Oh joy of joys.
And now that this was all out in the open, why not show everyone right away, may as well.
Lin & Jorrit asked to watch this Irish Phil nodding dog footage 4 times in a row and were lolling their bird-loving heads clean off every time.
Phil was like Oh man I am so busted.
We spoke to the manager Bugs about the plan for the morning and he assured us he’d ordered us 2 bodas for a 5am pick up to take us to the town, in order to catch the 6am bus to Kabale. Not ideal, but seemed to be the only way to do it considering there was only 1 direct bus a day and it was this one. Lin & Jorret felt slightly smug about having their own vehicle at this point and we definitely felt envious.
We set our alarms and went to bed, apprehensive about the early start but hopeful that it would all work out fine...

‘Keep talking to me’: Hyderabad vet’s last phone call to sister - india news
Tumblr media
The scene changes drastically as you drive off the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway at the Chatanpally crossing. The wide road leads to a narrow path, concrete gives way to mud, and bright lights switch to total darkness. On this zigzagged path, an underpass opens out on to the service road on the other side. Inside this underpass is one of the quietest, darkest, and remotest patches of land on the 285-km route connecting two state capitals. It’s so cut off from the buzz of speeding cars above that it’s unlikely anyone would have noticed someone being set on fire inside it — especially in the middle of the night. And no one did on the intervening night of November 27 and 28.At 5am on November 28, a milkman from Chatanpally village took the underpass on his way to the other side and saw something burning. He dismissed it as a fire lit by someone to keep warm. On his way back, at 7am, the fire was still on. Curious, he went to inspect it and saw a human hand sticking out of the fire. He called up the police on his mobile phone. By then, officers at the Shadnagar police station were already looking for a missing person for a few hours.A 26-year-old veterinary doctor in a southern suburb of Hyderabad left her house at 5.30pm the previous day. The last time her family heard from her was at 9. 22pm when she called her sister from a toll plaza on the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway, and told her that she was feeling scared. She said her scooter had a puncture and a bunch of men had offered to help, but she was feeling uncomfortable around them. “Keep talking to me,” she told her sister a few minutes before disconnecting the call. When her sister rang her back on her mobile phone at 9. 45pm, she found it switched off. Her sister rushed to file a complaint at the nearest police station at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police station, but she was told by the officers on duty that the toll plaza didn’t fall in their jurisdiction. The family claims they were told that she may have just “eloped with a boyfriend” and also asked whether she had any “lovers or affairs”.At 3.10am, the family finally managed to register a missing-person complaint at Shadnagar police station. These were crucial hours as the police would discover later: between 9.45 and 10.30pm, the woman was gang-raped and murdered a few metres off the Nehru-ORR toll plaza. The crimes were allegedly plotted hours previously. At 6pm, when the 26-year-old drove to the toll plaza from her house, 10km away, to park her scooter and hail a shared taxi farther into the city, a common practice for residents in the suburb, she didn’t notice four young men sitting in a circle and sharing a bottle of whiskey. As the police later pieced together, the four men, Mohammed Arif (26), Jolly Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chenna Keshavalu (21), worked as drivers and cleaners of a lorry that plied between Bangalore and Hyderabad carrying construction material, mainly iron nails and bricks. Somewhere on the route, the police said, they stopped at a scrap shop, sold off a pack of iron nails, and bought four bottles of liquor. They were making their way through the first bottle when they noticed the young woman park her scooter and get into a taxi headed towards Gachibowli, 20km away, where she had an appointment with a dermatologist. One of them punctured her scooter’s tyre shortly after she left. Then they resumed the drinking, and waited for her to return. At 9. 20pm, when she came back and discovered the flat tyre, the leader of the group, Arif, approached her and offered help. Arif walked with her to the toll booth and asked the operator to point them in the direction of a bike repair shop, as the operator, Shonu, told the police. He gave them directions to a repair shop a short distance away, but on the side road leading off the highway. As the vet dragged the scooter with the group of men off the highway, Arif suggested that one of his men proceed to the repair shop while the others wait with her near toll plaza. The remaining three men persuaded her to walk into a dark compound housing an abandoned worker’s room surrounded by overgrown bushes to the left of the plaza. This is when she panicked and called up her sister, but between the time she hung up and her sister called her back, the fourth man had returned, and one of them had seized her mobile phone and turned it off. Then the group was taking turns to rape her, after forcing her to consume some liquor, according to the police report. “They forcibly committed gang rape against her will and consent, robbed her of her belongings, and murdered her by smothering,” said the remand report of the Shadnagar police. By 11pm, the four men allegedly tossed her dead body into their lorry and planned its disposal. While two of them, with Arif at the wheel, drove the lorry towards Bangalore, the other two followed them on the vet’s scooter. They then decided to burn the body.“Shiva and Naveen went to a petrol bunk to purchase petrol but the worker there refused to give petrol,” the report said. It was he who later gave the investigating officers their first breakthrough. On November 29, a worker at an Essar petrol bunk near Nandigama village, called the Shadnagar police after watching the news, and told them that on the midnight of 27/28 November, two men aged around 20 came in on a red Hero Maestro scooter and asked for petrol to be filled in a plastic bottle. “They went to another bunk and purchased petrol to set fire to the body. On the way, near Ashiyana Hotel, they found a bridge and decided to dispose of the body under the bridge,” the report added. “Chenna Keshavulu turned the lorry towards Hyderabad and they took the dead body under the bridge. Arif poured petrol on the body, Naveen poured diesel, and Shiva lit the fire with a match box. Sim card, handbag of the deceased were thrown in the flames … Arif and Keshavulu left the spot in lorry, Shiva and Naveen followed on the scooty. On the way, near Kothur bus stop, Shiva and Naveen parked the scooty and boarded the lorry.” They removed the number plate of the scooter before leaving it behind. Then they went to their villages, changed their clothes, and went to bed. At 7am on November 28, the police station in Shadnagar received information about the burning body. A police team arrived shortly with the father of the missing doctor who took one look at the remains and identified his daughter.SHOCK, ANGERBased on information from the CCTV cameras on the highway and leads from the toll-booth operator, the scooter repair mechanic, the petrol pump workers and the owner of the lorry fleet, the police arrested the four suspects from the neighbouring Narayanpet district hours after the discovery of the dead body. They are currently in a 14-day police remand in Cherlapalli jail just outside Hyderabad. As news travelled, people across India reacted in outrage to the brutal rape and murder of the 26-year-old veterinarian. Many were reminded of the Delhi gang rape in 2012, when a 24-year-old physiotherapy student was raped and murdered in a moving bus by a group of six men, a crime that drove a nationwide movement for women’s rights and a revision of rape laws. In common with the 2012 case, this too was tangled up in gender and class battles; while the victim was a middle-class professional from the city, the perpetrators are blue-collar workers from villages. Protests took place widely, from outside the police station and jail, where the suspects were produced to campuses and streets, from Hyderabad’s Charminar to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Near the toll booth where the veterinarian was raped and murdered, 26-year-old protestor Swati Devarakonda, a software developer, said, “ When they said on TV that it was just a few metres away from the toll booth, I couldn’t believe, given that it is busy round-the-clock. Which is why I came to see for myself. She was the same age as me and must have had similar dreams and ambitions. I carry a pepper spray but if four men attack one girl, how can anybody defend themselves? . We should make an example of culprits.”“If our women and children are not safe, what is the use of police and government. Like in Arab countries, publicly behead culprits. This has nothing to do with religion. We should not allow anybody to divide us. If the police, courts can’t handle the culprits, hand them to the public, we will take care,” said Maqdoom Pasha, a fruit seller, who had come to the spot with his wife. Many politicians and ministers in Telangana have visited and consoled the victim’s family. In a series of tweets, KT Rama Rao, minister in state cabinet and son of chief minister K Chandrashekara Rao, pleaded with the Prime Minister: “Hon’ble PM @narenramodi ji, 7 years after Nirbhaya’s ghastly rape and murder, the convicts are not hung…”On Sunday, KCR said that fast track court would ensure speedy justice in the case and that the government would extend all assistance required to the victim’s family. “Everybody comes and tell us justice will be done. What is the use? Will our smiling daughter comeback? After Nirbhaya case too, nothing has changed. That is the tragedy of the country,” said the deceased’s uncle at her building complex. ‘HOW CAN MY SON DO THIS?’Nearly 150km away, in Narayanpet district, the villages are eerily quiet. All four suspects in the case belong to this district. Three of them, Naveen, Shiva and Keshavulu, are from the Gudigandla village, and the main suspect, Arif, from Jakulaire village. Although the district is close and well connected to the IT hubs of Hyderabad, most people in the villages either work in the farms or pick up odd jobs around the city. The three suspects from Gudigandla are school drop-outs who, when they weren’t picked up from the village by lorry drivers, spent their time loafing or sleeping, according to their families and neighbours. “For last six months, he hadn’t worked. He had left for the lorry cleaning job three days ago,” said Lakshmi, mother of Jolly Naveen. Since her husband died in 2006, she works in other people’s farms. She did not have the time to track her son’s habits and movements. “I have my job. I have my daughter,” she said. “When he left he didn’t say where he was going. His work was loading and unloading boxes. He made ~5,000 a month from it. When he came back, he used to be grimy from head to toe. When he came early morning on Thursday, he followed his routine -- had a bath, had food, and slept. Some time later, he got a call from his cousin Chenna Keshavulu and left for his house. He didn’t come back,” she said. Naveen was arrested from the house of Chenna Keshavulu, where the police was waiting for him. Lakshmi found out why he had not returned after watching the news on television and from neighbours. She has been angry ever since. “He is my only son, so I naturally love him, but if they did what is being alleged, then they all deserve to be hanged.”At the house of Jollu Shiva, his father, Jollu Rajaih, says he wasn’t even around when his son left or when he came back, because he was away at a distant farm where he lives and works. He has been to the police station since, he says, but he wasn’t allowed to talk to his son. “I wanted to ask him how and why all of this happened. He never drank, he never spoke to any girl in the village, never troubled anyone,” said Rajaih. The father said he will follow his principles, though. “He is young but he is responsible for his actions. I have a daughter. I won’t stand for any of this if its true.”Across the road from Shiva’s house, Keshavulu’s mother, also a farm worker, refuses to believe her son is capable of rape and murder. “No way he would have done anything. Perhaps he tagged along, stood and watched,” she said. For years, she says, his son has suffered from a kidney defect whose treatment, including monthly dialysis, swallows up most of the family’s earnings. “We took very good care of our son, we pampered him. When will they release him? My husband is very angry, he wants to drink himself to death. I don’t have the will to live,” she said.A short drive from Gandigudla is Jakulaire, Arif’s village, where his parents, too, are dealing with shock. “When he came back that morning, he didn’t eat, he even refused water. He said while he was driving the lorry one girl drove in the opposite direction on her scooter and he hit her by mistake, and she died. This is all I know,” said his mother, Moole Bi. She received information about his alleged actions since, but she would rather not believe it. “How can my son do this?” Source link Read the full article

War Graves, ANZAC Day & Paris
24-25/04/2018: Late start today as we intend to look around the war graves, do at least le Circuit du Souvenir and then rest before tomorrow's dawn service. Cecilia, with a day of rest behind her was keen to get out and look around.
Tumblr media
Raring to go
While we were all having tea and coffee with breakfast, Thomas decided to reverse his car out and reversed into Benoît’s horse truck ramp. Cockup five. It had been down since we arrived. Thomas didn't trust reversing cameras so he ignored the camera in the car. He then proceeded to reverse out and just clipped the end of the ramp putting a small tear in the tyre wall. And guess what? He didn't take out insurance for windscreens and tyres. Benoît suggested that we take it to a place in Varennes but to make sure that we had the best opportunity to get a new tyre, we headed to Amiens.
Tumblr media
Where to put the jack
What an ordeal, we looked up some tyre places, entered Goodyear Dunlop into the GPS and we were on our way. The thirty kilometre trip went without a hitch until we were almost there. As went drove along Rue de Poulainville we were right next to a large factory. It had Dunlop France stamped all over their boundary fence and on a building or two. The actual address was in Avenue Roger Dumoulin just around the corner. When we were out front it was in fact another large factory. The GPS actually took us a few hundred metres down the road. When we got there, it told us to turn around and go back, which we did. After twenty minutes or so of chasing our tails we pulled into the Dunlop factory and asked for directions. They told us that they were the spot but didn't sell tyres. They pointed us to a place further down the road that sold tyres. Fine we thought and headed off.
The complex that we were in had a rather interesting past being much bigger around five years ago. The factory on the other side of the road had been making cheap tyres for years and doing their arse. After several attempts to restructure with different product lines and shift times, amongst court action and union resistance, they gave up and decided to close. The Texan CEO of Titan, another tyre manufacture who had recently pulled out of take over negotiations, questioned if Goodyear thought he was stupid when they suggested that they reopen negotiations. "The French workforce gets paid high wages but works only three hours. They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three, and work for three. I told this to the French union workers' faces. They told me that's the French way!" was his reply. When the factory was on its final legs the workers took a couple of executives hostage. That didn't work either.

The next step was to find this tyre place. A couple of times up and down the road found it in a small factory complex at the back. We got the tyre out, rolled it into the work shop and waited for service. The dude behind the counter told us they only do truck tyres. Go around the corner to First Stop Tyres in Rue André Durouchez and they should be able to help. By this time Shane was fuming, actually, everyone was feeling pretty pissed off as the day was half over and instead of being well and truly on the war grave trail we were still trying to replace the bloody tyre. He and Tom packed the tyre back into the car and headed around the corner, unpacked the tyre and took it into the workshop. The dude come out, looked at it and said it would take three days to order one. At least we had an answer but not the one we wanted. "Try Norauto near Carrefour on Rue Botticelli". One last chance. We headed over to the northern end of town, pulled into the carpark and got the tyre out again. By this time Cecilia was starving so she, Jo and Beau headed in to look for lunch. They were soon joined by Thomas and Shane after again a knock back. Looks like we have to risk another flat and push on with no spare. After lunch, and Cec investing in an electronic cigarette setup, we were on the road again to take up where we were supposed to be hours earlier. The start of the Commonwealth Remembrance Trail, Le Circuit du Souvenir.

Le Circuit du Souvenir
We resumed our journey just before one and turned a leisurely day into a hurried one as the start of the trail, Péronne, was almost an hour away. When we arrived, we parked down the road and walked up the path to Péronne et l'Historial de la Grande Guerre, the Museum of the Great War and paid for a double entry, this one and Thiepval which we would visit later.
Tumblr media
Waiting in Péronne
As with the last time we visited, the museum was really well equipped but with an extra section that was under construction. This time it was finished but we moved into the museum proper and left "The Guardrooms" until later. What immediately struck our eye was the old Saint-Chamond tank in the courtyard, a box on tracks with a small barrel at the front. Although crude in design, it must have been rather confronting for the infantrymen when they first encountered these things and a sign of things to come. As rudimentary as it was, it was the second French designed tank of the First World War, both heavier and longer than its predecessor. None exist today, they were all destroyed. This was in fact a replica.
Tumblr media
New addition to the courtyard, a life size replica by graphic and décor design students at Le Corbusier vocational college in Tourcoing. None of the originals remain.
The ramp to the left, leading to the entry was lined with helmets from throughout the ages, all contained within the niches of the fortress walls. Once in, we showed our tickets and entered into the Salle Avant-guerre, the first room containing militaria and chronological history of events that led up to the war. This led into two central galleries, Salle 1914-1916 and Salle 1916-1918. To the side was Salle Bataille de la Somme, a small theatrette that showed a thirty minute film of the Battle of the Somme. The galleries dealt with the first and second halves of the Great War respectively. In the centre of each were displays of weapons and military equipment from the period, recessed into the floor. Salle 1914-16 displayed mannequins dressed in the uniforms of the nations represented at the front with all their kit, personal weapons and creature comforts such as musical instruments. Support staff, nurses and medics were also there. Salle 1916-1918 was similar but concentrated on the heavier weaponry used at the front. Both galleries were surrounded by glass cabinets with paraphernalia from the period and audio-visual stations with film monitors, sound archives, and touch screen tables and tablets scattered throughout. The display was from three separate perspectives, German, French and British.

As we headed towards the exit, we took a look at Salle Otto Dix, a room dedicated to the German soldier and artist. On display were representations of his Der Krieg series of prints depicting his experiences of the horror of the war. Very dour. The last room before leaving was Salle Après-guerre showing items, posters etc that were displayed or recovered after the war.
As we left the galleries and re-entered the castle's courtyard, The Guardrooms were down to the left. There were four permanent exhibition areas namely, Castle of Péronne, Sentry over the Somme showing the evolution of the castle and its relationship with Péronne throughout history, Péronne, a Stronghold on the Border which was an audio visual animation of the city's wars and sieges over the ages, A Territory Caught in the Grip of War, photos of the area during and immediately after the war and the one we were most interested in, Australians and the Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin. This room was really good with maps and photos of Aussies during their taking of Mont Saint Quentin.

After the visit we jumped back in the cars and headed a few kilometres further, through Bouchavesnes-Bergen and green fields to the next stop on the map, Rancourt. This area experienced heavy fighting during the last three months of the Battle of the Somme where the 32nd French Army Corps took on the Germans with the intention of penetrating their communications line between Bapaume and Péronne. They managed to do so, finally stopping at Saint-Pierre Vast Wood nearby during November 1916. One of the many fallen was Jean Du Bos, Second Lieutenant in the 94th Infantry Regiment. His parents commissioned the French Chapel of Remembrance fronting the roadway in 1923 in memory of he and his mates.

We stopped here for a while, walking through the cemetery where over eight and a half thousand French soldiers are buried, a simple white cross symbolising their sacrifice. Just a paddock away was the Rancourt Deutscher Soldaten Friedhof, the Rancourt German Soldier's Cemetery where almost ten and a half thousand Germans are buried, several thousand in mass graves. Straight across the road behind a small cottage was a British cemetery holding about eighty.
Tumblr media

It was then onto Delville Wood. The memorial impressed us a couple of years ago so another visit was a must. Thousands of South Africans died here during 1916 pushing back the Germans in the Battle of Delville Wood. More battles were fought here during the German spring offensive of 1918 but most met their demise during the original confrontation. The place was obliterated by shelling during the battle that saw almost nothing remain, bar one tree. Jo left the final of the school kid crosses from Tilegry primary school here. So many men died in the bombardment that thousands still rest beneath the replanted forest that is there today. First stop was the cemetery and then up Central Avenue toward the Memorial Arch in the distance. The wide avenue and oak lining gave a great sense of tranquillity. The trees were part of the restoration of the wood in the 1920's and were germinated from acorns collected in Franschoek. The person responsible for the restoration came from there and asked a local boy to collect a bag full of acorns from a tree that had germinated from acorns that French Huguenot Jean Gardiol had brought to South Africa in 1688.

The memorial and museum were accessible this time. Shane and the boys went in for a look, Jo and Cec looked around outside, revisiting the tree that survived the whole ordeal, Aussie crosses and other nations’ symbols resting on the trunk. Although it was behind the main complex, it seemed to be in some way the centre of it all.
Tumblr media
The Last Tree. Still there
The path went through the memorial arch and beyond to the museum. Whilst the memorial was built around 1926, not long after the war, the museum was built by 1986 and built around the Cross of Consecration. It was designed around the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, the first European fortification erected in South Africa. The pentagonal building has full internal glass walls with the cross solemnly on display.

Built to commemorate the sacrifice of around twenty five thousand South African service men and women of all races who volunteered to fight for their country in both World Wars and in Korea, the displays included remnants from the area as well as large bronze reliefs depicting the history of battle. The front doors opened and immediately before us was a large glass etching of Delville Wood after the battle. Directly behind the etching was the Cross of Consecration in a central courtyard that we were excluded from. Just to the side was a roll of honour from one of the wars and to the left of the roll was the displays of the memorial, bronze reliefs, a glowing glass representation of the scorched earth and plenty of photos and stories.

The next step was to find Jo and Cec. We thought that that they would have been for a walk around but not to our surprise, Jo was still looking around while Cec was sitting near the arch having a vape. We revisited the oldest tree in the village and then had to move on. The day was escaping us.

Our next stop was a brief one at Windmill Hill, which now included a memorial to the fallen animals, and then on to a big one, the British Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval via the new museum, the second half of our two for one deal at Péronne.  The memorial arches contain the names of over seventy thousand soldiers whose remains were never found or unidentified and its kept that way. If the remains of a soldier is found by locals going about their business and is identified, the soldier is given a full military funeral at a cemetery near where they were found. Their name on Thiepval Memorial is then filled in. On the way back to Clairfaye, we stopped for one more memorial, one which we couldn't find last time. The Beaumont-Hamel New Foundlanders' Memorial was just about to close when we pulled up. Just past the information centre was a pathway through the fields that had been preserved as they were left after the war. Trenches everywhere giving a good perspective of the landscape of the day, without the rain and mud. To the side was a large rocky mound with the statue of a caribou where one could ascend the path to the top and look over the battlefield where so many died.

That was it for the day, back to the apartment for a rest before tackling the dawn service. Just a rest, not a sleep as there was too much to do. The rush, or semi-rush was on as with Joanne and Cecilia laying a wreath, we had to be early, so the next few hours were spent eating, relaxing, packing and cleaning. Our agreement with Benoît through Airbnb was that we had to vacate by mid morning but we would still be in Villers-Bretonneux. Luckily there was no one booked in the next day. It was fine with him to leave our gear inside the apartment to collect after the morning was over. The twenty odd kilometres back verses the loading of all of our belongings that night and leaving the vehicle in a carpark was a no brainer.

Ninety percent packed, we headed out at eleven o'clock towards the township of Glisy, where we parked up the Volvo and joined the waiting game to go through security and onto the shuttles. The place wasn't even open yet but the queue was long and as expected soldiers everywhere. Once onboard, we headed straight off as the buses filled quickly.

Inside the security tent
Almost as soon as we left, Jo received a phone call from ABC Radio which had been a couple of days in the planning. She gave an interview on 2NC about where we were and why we were there, talking about Henry Ringland and the whole ANZAC Day experience so far. Apparently, messages from home said that she sounded good.
The greeting at the Australian Memorial was as expected, queues of people waiting to get scanned. It was okay though as we felt safe with all of the security around. Terrorists are after all cowards, and look for soft targets. There were no such targets here.
Out of the scanning marque, and for the second time on our trip, we walked up amongst the headstones leading to the cenotaph. It was cold, and although not wet, we were nervous about a downfall soaking everyone to the bone. Little sacrifice with what those before us, and the reason why we were there, went through. We were welcomed by Aussie support staff with some comforting goodies once we reached the action area. To our left was another marque, full of tea and coffee, pastries and water. We were set and grabbed a seat in a pretty good spot reserved for descendants and wreath layers, we were both. By two o'clock the entertainment started. The Army brass band and an accompanying choir. By five thirty, the service commenced.
Tumblr media
Waiting for it all to start
Amongst the VIP's were several pollies, the Prime Minister and some underlings including Tony Abbott, the Governor General and Prince Charles. The service was very moving, starting with a short film, an extract from a movie called "The Telegraph Man". This brought everyone to tears with Jack Thompson being the local postie in a small town during the war and everyone dreaded him coming anywhere near them as he only ever had bad news, namely a telegram reporting their sons' deaths. This was followed by soldiers faces, posing before they left for battle and dressed in their uniform, posing with their families or out in the battlefield. All projected onto the white face of the tower. After the speeches, the final part of the ceremony was the Last Post, performed by a lone bugler from the top of the tower. It would have rung across the valley, what was once the battlefield where many, many lives were lost. Very poignant indeed and underpinned by a shower of rain before the final act, wreath laying.

The service begins
Once the officials had laid their wreaths, it was the turn of the direct descendants and general public to lay flowers. When prompted, Jo and Cec walked up to the steps of the tower and laid the flowers and a wreath for Uncle Henry Joseph Ringland. Originally Jo, Cecilia, Beau and Thomas were going to lay the flowers but an email restricted it two people per family. Jo regrets leaving the boys behind as other families had more people out there.

Finally, the service was over and surprisingly, instead of being whisked away by security, Prince Charles stayed around and chatted to the plebs. He didn't rush neither and genuinely seemed to want to be there. He outlasted the pollies. We didn't get close to him and made a bee line up the hill for breakfast at the Victoria Café. We did the same thing as last time and the food was good. If we timed it right, which we did, we would have time for breakfast and then work our way down to the French service at eight thirty.
A pleasant surprise awaited us while we were waiting to be served. Ex-Prime Minister and now back bencher, Tony Abbott arrived for a meal. Shane took the opportunity to introduce himself and have a brief word. Both commented about the significance of the morning and how moving it was. Shane commented about how the Somme is where it all happened and that this place should hold more significance on ANZAC day than Gallipoli. Tony agreed and mentioned that we also get on better with the French than the Turks. As quickly as the conversation had begun, it was over.

The French ceremony was a different affair. As expected, much more low key but every bit as important as ours. A decent crowd milled around to watch the proceedings, starting with the arrivals of the dignitaries, through a guard of honour manned by French firefighters with ceremonial axes and then the Australian armed forces.

Yes, Prime Ministers
Speeches made and wreaths laid, the ceremony concluded. Everyone dispersed, us down to the end of the street with heaps of others for the shuttle back to Glisy. Back to the Volvo and back to Clairfaye. With our bags already pretty well packed, it was a case of checking the apartment, loading up the car and bidding farewell. As a parting gift, Benoît gave us a bottle of his red wine, produced locally from a private vineyard. The only identification was a sticker in French instead of a label.  Dated 2005. Cecilia thanked him and in return gave him a beany from the service with the ANZAC emblem on it. We parted ways and headed toward Paris.
It was a slow trip to CDG as Thomas couldn't go over eighty due to the dodgy little tyre on his car. He did anyway, about a hundred clicks and managed well, but towards the end of the Motorway and nearing Paris, Shane found himself nodding off. The lack of sleep was getting the better of him. The thirty plus hours awake didn't seem to affect Thomas as much. We were travelling at over a hundred kilometres an hour so he pulled over and Jo drove the last part.
Once we left the Motorway, Shane, back in the driver’s seat, took a different turn than Thomas due to the GPS variations. With no service we struggled to contact each other. When we did, we decided to meet again at the Le Celtic in Le Thillay where we had started our journey a few days before. After meeting up in the car park across the road we set our sights on the airport and headed off. We followed each other for a while but were soon separated again.
To complicate matters, although the GPS gave an accurate location of where the Sixt return area was, getting there was a nightmare. There were so many turns available once in the airport, taking the wrong turn was inevitable. At one point, Shane stopped and asked a guy repairing the boom gates at the entry of somewhere. He told Shane to drive straight ahead and exit back onto the road that he was just on. The only thing was that at the other end of somewhere there was another boom gate and he couldn't get out. After a bit of yelling into a microphone the gate was raised. When we finally chose the right road, we ended up in a massive car park, the spiralling access roads leading us in circles, actually and metaphorically.
Finally, after what seemed and certainly was ages, we found the place, pulling up at the Sixt returns office.  As we were to return the vehicle, Jo went to look for Thomas and Cecilia who were trying to locate us by phone calls, they were still lost. With stress levels at the extreme, Shane jumped into the car, collected Jo and went to find them, which we did, a bit of a way off from the Sixt office. Shane was meant to lead Tom back but drove like he was on the freeway and lost them. The F bomb was being used by Cecilia and Tom, we finally were reunited and unloaded.
There was no opportunity to wash the cars so they went back dirty. The dudes at Sixt didn't care, they backed it into a spot near the office and went over it for damage. There was only one mark on the Volvo but it was already there. They looked for damage on Tom's car, we told them about the punctured tyre and not about the damaged rim. It was the first thing they looked for.
With all luggage out we grabbed some airport trolleys caught the lift back down a couple of levels and straight outside to the taxi rank. There were a few cabs around but all seemed too small. A young woman who was there to organise the cabs asked a few questions and stood us to the side. There were a few dodgy cab drivers around, particularly an African who stalked us inside the terminal trying to get us into his minivan before we could even get to the rank. We ignored him. The woman ended up calling up for a minivan to jump the queue and take us all together. Seventy Euro for a memorable trip back to Paris by a maniac who reached speeds over a hundred kilometres an hour, weaving in and out of traffic and abused people beside him as we went. Anyway, we got there.
Tumblr media
Excited by the trip from CDG
The driver dropped us off straight out front of our apartment where we would spend the next few days, 220 Rue de Rivoli. We immediately phoned our contact and was advised of the security number to get us through the oversized front door and into a courtyard. From there she met us and sorted us out getting up to the top floor (plus a couple) in the lift. After a few trips as it only held two at a time, we were at the apartment. In the roof space. The apartment was cosy to say the least. No dining room, only a small bench with stools. There was a bedroom with two singles on the bottom floor and a bedroom with a very tight double bed on the top. The toilet was downstairs next to the kitchen, no window and no vent or exhaust fan, equalled gross smells from the when well used, and the bathroom upstairs, joined by a very steep set of stairs. Break your neck type of steep. Care needed to be taken from the top bedroom as the doorway led straight onto the top step. An accident waiting to happen. The boys were in the room down stairs, Jo and Shane upstairs and Cecilia on the fold out couch. Once again Cecilia, Shane and Jo’s suitcases had to be kept down stairs and were squeezed under the little table and stools that was suppose to be a dining table.
Tumblr media
Doorman from next door, not there to greet us
Once the person who greeted us had left, we headed straight out looking for a feed, Cec's shout. Jo, Beau and Cec went first, and while waiting for the rest in the foyer , were abused by an old French lady who demanded to know who they were. Glared at Beau, who was standing away from the girls and asked were we all together, and what they were doing in the foyer. Jo explained we were on holidays staying in an apartment and we were waiting for Hubby and other son. She demanded to know what number apartment we were staying in, we didn’t know and said the 6th floor somewhere near the stairs. She then said is it Airbnb, then went on to whinge about Airbnb in both English and French. Jo smiled sweetly and said “Je ne parlez francais je ne pas comprehend”. The old bat demanded to see our rental paperwork. Jo told her she didn’t have it on her and if it’s such a big deal to take it up with the owner as it wasn't our problem. Cecilia was quite stressed though and was terrified the lady was the owner of the apartment block or the caretaker. She was convinced we would get back from dinner and find our luggage out on the street. By the time the boys had arrived the old sheila was gone. Not that they would have done much. Probably copped it as well. Anyway, we made our way out of the front doors, walked left down the pathway and then left again. At the end of Rue de 29 Juliet was a shopping mall covered in glass. There wasn't much open, but to the right hand side was a sizable fruit market which ended up being just the thing for Cecilia. All the trip so far, she wanted some asperges or asparagus. She finally got what she wanted but paid an ungodly sum for them. They were huge, not like back home.  She also bought the largest punnet of strawberries we have ever seen. Then after looking around the immediate area (our host recommended this area), we decided to have burgers at Razowskis, a local burger joint. Cecilia's shout. We sat down and studied the menu.

Eat me
The meal was good, as far as burgers were concerned but three hundred dollars for five burgers and beers was ludicrous. Cecilia insisted so that was that. Back to the apartment for an early night. Tomorrow, the Orsay.

Leaving Kinloch as the clouds started to lift the drive back along the lake offered a better view of the mountains than the drive in. It really is a stunning place. Not hard to work out the attraction for all the tourists coming here, there are just too many for me. I know I’m one of the thousands of tourists but feel it’s almost overkill in places like Queenstown.
People we had met along the way talked about the freedom camp at Lowburn (#8674) alongside Lake Dunstan it’s about 4kms North of the town of Cromwell on State highway 8. It was easy to find with a number of vehicles already parked there but it’s a large area with plenty of space so we had no problem finding a good spot.
The travel directory talks about two camps being here the first an L shaped area just before the main area but this is now closed with prominent signs stating no freedom camping so just the one spot.
It was out with the camera on our arrival getting photos of the mountains on both sides of the lake. Central Otago is a place that we could consider living it’s so pretty with so much to offer and if you stay away from Queenstown house prices are still reasonable but in reality it would be too cold in winter for the two of us and family are all in Auckland
Sunday mornings in Cromwell there is a Farmers Market so we thought with the early bird catching the worm we would be there for the opening at 9am to grab the best stuff before things sold out.
So it was an early morning bike ride along the lake towards the town. We kept stopping to admire the views and take photos as the light shone through the trees, reflected off the lake and highlighted the mountains it was just a fantastic start to the morning.
The market is held in the Heritage Precinct a courtyard in the middle of the buildings. Interestingly all the buildings in this area are reproductions of the original buildings constructed as part of the project when the Clyde dam was built flooding the original part of Cromwell. It still looks historic and if you didn’t know you would probably be fooled quite easily.
The market had around 20 stalls offering a wide range of products although not all made or grown in the area with us purchasing some Stewart Island salmon (delicious). As we where on our bikes we had to be a little cautious with the amount we purchased and it was hard to know when to stop we did however do our bit to support the local economy.
On top of the Salmon we also purchased some of the local lamb, pork, cheese, bread  and stopped for coffee. I thought we did quite well.
The rebuild of the heritage precinct includes a number of buildings alongside the lakefront and with the market in full swing there was a very festive atmosphere that made walking around all the more enjoyable especially when there aren’t the hordes of people that you find at Queenstown.
Tucked away in the precinct are a number of cottage gardens that someone or some people have obviously spent a lot of time and effort on to make them as pretty as they are. Also tucked away off the main route is the replica bakery as well as the Lilliput Library a great idea for book exchange that I have noticed around the country.
We returned to the Motorhome with all of our goodies from the market had a bite to eat for lunch and then set off back towards the town for another bike ride with the intention of riding beyond the town to Bannochburn following the trail alongside the lake.
The path alongside the lake is mostly smooth and flat but is infested with rocks that appear in awkward places it’s not an issue on my bike but as Sarah’s bike is more of a road going bike she has to be a little careful otherwise it’s quite easy to loose your balance when hitting a well placed rock. But with a glorious day there was no need to hurry it was just a gentle ride to enjoy the views.
As we again approached the historic precinct we came across these two churches that would have stood on top of the hill before the dam was built the Stone Temple as it is now called is in private hands, has been fully restored and is available to rent either for accommodation or for weddings etc. The Catholic Church below is still in use every Sunday.
To really give the feel of age there are a number of ruins left on the waters edge including the old school hall that is now used as a Pentanque court twice a week with everyone welcome to play. It was good to see a number of people there taking advantage of the facility.
It’s hard not to notice all the people fishing in this area and while we where talking to one of the locals near the wharf we met these two lads who had caught a very nice trout from the jetty. According to the lady we where speaking to it’s only the kids who catch the trout she said they catch them and the adults don’t since we haven’t tried fishing here I have been unable to test this theory.
Not far beyond Cromwell as you head towards Bannockburn the bike trail changes from a nice level track to a bit more of an uphill downhill ride with the track also changing from rocks to being quite sandy in places. It became very hard for Sarah to negotiate the track with her road tyres and after a couple of kms we decided to head back before reaching our destination when we reached an almost shear cliff face (read steep downhill and sharp uphill). The track is also covered at the sides with wild thyme giving a really nice smell and Californian poppies giving a burst of colour.
That evening we spent happy hour with our neighbours on either side Aileen and Stewart who are on an extended trip around New Zealand in their Hymer that they purchased new when they lived in England. With a drop down bed above the two front seats it’s amazingly spacious despite only being 6 metres long. They say that they have looked long and hard for a replacement but have been unable to find something that lives up to this, it’s not hard to see why.
Also joining us where Roland and Gloria in their Autotrail that they only picked up 10 weeks ago. it’s such a small world with Roland and Stewart having worked together some 30 years ago.
Later that evening I went for a walk around the camp to see how full it was as we had heard a number of vans arrive. I counted over 80 vans in the campground with the Warbirds Over Wanaka show only a few days away you could imagine that it will only get fuller as people arrive in the area for the show.
The next morning with tanks full it was off to the dump station early where we met two couples ahead of us who had been staying at the Rotary Glen NZMCA camp (#8675). So with them leaving we thought maybe we can be one of the lucky 10 allowed to stay each night and headed back to check it out. Sure enough there where only 8 vans in the camp so we checked in.
It’s always nice when you meet up with people that you have met on the road and although Peter and Tracey where just leaving the camp we caught up with a cup of coffee and the news from each of us since we had last seen each other in October at the annual Dethleffs gathering.
It was also nice to catch up with Steve and Fiona who we had met during our time in Gore who feature in the latest Motorhome Destinations magazine with an article on their lifestyle.
Heading out of the back of the camp for a stroll to the shops after parking we came across this hillside. I am amazed that it hadn’t collapsed with all the rabbit burrows that had been dug into the side of the hill. For those that haven’t been to Rotary Glen it is located on the 4 Barrels walkway that leads right through the camp from the vineyards above and surrounding the camp. A number of locals appear to use this walkway judging from the number of people walking past during the evening.
Back from the walk we jumped back on our bikes to head up the lake past our original camp at Lowburn where we crossed the 45th Parallel again but the third time where there is some sort of marker to tell you that you have crossed it. From here there is also a walkway that scales the hills behind the lake. It looks almost vertical but we did spot a couple of people almost at the summit.
That evening the sun treated us to a spectacular display firstly lighting up the top of the mountains behind us while everything else was in shadow. Then illuminating some really unusual cloud formations. Finally setting behind the van in a blaze of orange.
But the real fun and games came that evening… My earlier photo shows the camp full sign and clearly states a limit of 10 vans at anyone time as this is all the resource consent allows. Returning from our bike ride we noticed a caravan entering the camp despite the camp full sign they claimed to have called the camp custodian who said it was all OK not satisfied with their explanation I phoned him myself to discover that they had told him it looked like someone was leaving, This did not happen so they made 11.
Later that evening another 3 winged members, two of whom had sat outside the gate waiting for darkness the second joining his friend who should have known better arrived. I am annoyed that people are breaking the rules especially when so many people had arrived at the gate and driven away clearly aware of the limit I vented my frustrations on the NZMCA Facebook page at the time of writing less than 24 hours later it’s had over 210 comments from fellow members who are as annoyed as I was. From the comments on the Facebook page from other members it’s obvious this is not the first time in fact it sounds like a regular occurrence.
This morning as we prepared to leave one of the people who had broken the rules was busy waving someone else in even though there where still 11 vans there telling them don’t worry there is plenty of space. There might be plenty of space but you are breaking the resource consent rules and the camp will be lost because of ignorant people like you.
After we had left the camp we ran into another of the campers who was there last night and like us he was also annoyed at the situation but neither of us wants to be the police confronting the members who should know better.
Enough said.
Cromwell or is that Countwell Leaving Kinloch as the clouds started to lift the drive back along the lake offered a better view of the mountains than the drive in.

#17 Amster-Daym!
From the moment we arrived in Amsterdam, dragging our bags along the canals and through the bicycle filled streets, we could feel it was a beautiful city. The tree were lit up with fairy lights and the beautiful architecture was evident even in the dark. However, I could not get over just how many bicycles there were in that city. It was crazy. If you didn't look left and then right and the left.. or whatever it is in Europe, you'd be hurt for sure. Check, check and check again, because bikes had the right of way; they're above cars and above people. Bikes hanging on racks filled the sidewalks and people were pedalling home from work, seriously they were everywhere! When we got to our accomodation, some of us were slightly nervous having pre-googled the Hostel and it had trademarked itself as the 'Worst Hostel in Europe' however that's a lie because it was actually half decent, and nowhere near the worst accomodation we'd had! The strong sense of weed at the front door, definitely meant we were in Amsterdam however!
That evening, Morgan led us down to the Red Light District and what an eye opener. Gals, just doing their thing in a little window, just waiting.. Mel and I got our own dinner whilst the others got pre occupied a little before our evening entertainment. Viewer discretion advised from here.. Mum. Don't read. After dinner, steak and chips! Yum! Mel and I opted for a bitta chocolate muffin and made our way back to the group meeting point ready for.. a sex show. Yep.. probably might keep the details of that one brief, but let's just it was quite the interesting evening. Friday, and our last full day day on tour! Morgan's directional abilities I feel might be really lacking, we walked an hour to our Amsterdam bike tour! Which took us about 10mins to return home from? Anyhow, we were on bikes in Amsterdam and blending in like the locals! Until Mekayla got a flat tyre and it started hailing!!! Perfect conditions! Our guide was quite forward, at three different points he had a go at a traffic warden and then two motorists! He hardly gave us any information about the city, but rather told the back to keep up! Thankfully my bike riding skills are still strong, did not want to cross him! We made a single stop at the I amsterdam sign, where we took some cliche touristy photos and other than that, we powered our way around the canal filled city. It was beautiful! I however, wouldn't have minded some more info haha! Back to the bike shop and a waffle filled lunch was definitely in order! Mekayla, Mel and I found the perfect location and a Nutella crepe with bananas and strawberries did classify as lunch that day! Mel journeyed back to the Hostel herself, whilst Mekayla and I took in a few more sights and got some cliche canal photos. The rain and hail! held off and it was actually a really lovely day after lunch, not as cold as the far Eastern European countries! Mekayla and I eventually made our way back to the Hostel for a quick nap prior to our River Cruise Dinner and Bar Hop that night.
Dinner was incredibly. Literally on a beautiful boat, just meandering down the waterways. We had a little red wine, and an Indonesian inspired dinner. I think entree was just crackers but the main had a chicken and beef dish, with vegetables, rice and salad. It was really good! Dessert was a layered Indonesian cake, not too fancy but the whole evening was a super lovely way to end our 24 day adventure around Europe. After the River Cruise, we had a few drinks in the Hostel passing time as dinner had been early. We then went to a few different bars, but none better than this epic shots bar. We had a sour strap shot on arrival, and then had been told about three others to definitely have. The Harry Potter shot didn't taste amazing, but the bartender literally lit up with bar like a magic show! So cool! Another one saw us eat what resembled to me a daisy flower core, gross! And then down the shot, which then brought on this random popping sensation in your mouth, similar to what pop rocks the candy do. The last one was a chemistry shot. It was crazy to watch done. The bartender mixed up the liquid and then put a glass over it, lit something up and then all of a sudden the air pressures meant that the liquid was sucked into the glass, she released it back down into the shot glass, gave the person a straw to drink it and then put the straw inside the larger glass to inhale the fumes. A little crazy! Very whacky science experiment like! In the last bar we counted down until Tahra's birthday! 20 years young! I was super keen for some McDonald's and desperately didn't want to be hungover for the 11 hour bus journey back to London that day, so Mel, Ian and I ventured for a snack and then home to sleep. Thankfully, I pulled through okay and woke up feeling pretty good all things considered.
Mel decided to leave the tour in Amsterdam as she plans to head back and see more of Western Germany. It was definitely hard saying goodbye to her. You spend all day, every day together, and we shared a lot of our memories around Europe. I'm very very grateful for that friendship, thankfully Mildura isn't far! As for the rest of us, we left Amsterdam at 7.30am and arrived at the ferry terminal in Caliea around 12.30pm. Unfortunately the UK Border yet again was scrutinising, and we missed the 1.10pm ferry.. meaning we waited for until 3.30pm for the next ferry!!!! We had to just sit and wait on the bus in the ferry lines. A small vending machine and toilet was the only thing available.. so bloody annoying! Although I did thankfully manage to sleep a little, that passed an hour! On the ferry our whole group just wanted one thing, food. Everyone marched to the food court and I've never been so pleased with a lasagne. Breakfast and 7am and then lunch at 4pm was a killer! Hannah, Tahra, Lachlan and I played a little Heads Up to pass time, and before we new it we were back on the bus and bound for London. The time ticked over to 7.30pm meaning a 12 hour day had been travelled on the bus.. and boy did we feel it! Back finally to Wombats and the goodbyes were now aplenty. It's crazy to spend a month with a group of people and then just know you're lives might not cross again.. And I always find it crazy that I started the Topdeck alone, not knowing anyone, before I met Mekayla, and we went to dinner with Mel and Lachie and then Isobel and Max. I'll always be grateful for that little group, and to the girls too, Hannah and Tahra, the Mryt-Dirt duo! Hard to believe they're from Myrtleford. I'll definitely be seeing them both soon. 10 countries around continental Europe on that Topdeck! Making this adventure 12 in total. Hard to fathom just how lucky we were with the people, the weather and with our leader Morgan, her optionals and knowledge went above and beyond! So many good memories that will take a little while to sink in. Despite the goodbyes, my journey continues a little longer with two more nights in London with Caitlin and Linda.
Topdeck, you were a blast! I'm so grateful to have seen and done so much with the greatest bunch of legends! Here's to meeting again somewhere in the world!
