Margaret Ives Abbott (June 15, 1878 – June 10, 1955) was an American amateur golfer. She was the first American woman to win an Olympic event: the women's golf tournament at the 1900 Summer Olympics.

Lilias Eveline Armstrong (29 September 1882 – 9 December 1937) was an English phonetician. She worked at University College London, where she attained the rank of reader. Armstrong is most known for her work on English intonation as well as the phonetics and tone of Somali and Kikuyu. Her book on English intonation, written with Ida C. Ward, was in print for 50 years. Armstrong also provided some of the first detailed descriptions of tone in Somali and Kikuyu.

Morris Berg (March 2, 1902 – May 29, 1972) was an American catcher and coach in Major League Baseball, who later served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Although he played 15 seasons in the major leagues, almost entirely for four American League teams, Berg was never more than an average player and was better known for being "the brainiest guy in baseball." Casey Stengel once described Berg as "the strangest man ever to play baseball".

Edward Dando (c. 1803 – 28 August 1832) was a thief who came to public notice in Britain because of his unusual habit of overeating at food stalls and inns, and then revealing that he had no money to pay. Although the fare he consumed was varied, he was particularly fond of oysters, having once eaten 25 dozen of them with a loaf and a half of bread with butter.

Harold Francis Davidson (14 July 1875 – 30 July 1937), generally known as the Rector of Stiffkey, was a Church of England priest who in 1932, after a public scandal, was convicted of immorality by a church court and defrocked. Davidson strongly protested his innocence and to raise funds for his reinstatement campaign he exhibited himself in a barrel on the Blackpool seafront. He performed in other sideshows of a similar nature, and died after being attacked by a lion in whose cage he was appearing in a seaside spectacular.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over one hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson's influential book Silent Spring (1962). George Went Hensley (May 2, 1881 – July 25, 1955) was an American Pentecostal minister best known for popularizing the practice of snake handling. A native of rural Appalachia, Hensley experienced a religious conversion around 1910: on the basis of his interpretation of scripture, he came to believe that the New Testament commanded all Christians to handle venomous snakes.

Margaret Alice Murray FSA Scot FRAI (13 July 1863 – 13 November 1963) was a British-Indian Egyptologist, archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, and folklorist who was born in India. The first woman to be appointed as a lecturer in archaeology in the United Kingdom, she worked at University College London (UCL) from 1898 to 1935. She served as president of the Folklore Society from 1953 to 1955, and published widely over the course of her career.

Dom Pedro Afonso (19 July 1848 – 10 January 1850) was the Prince Imperial and heir apparent to the throne of the Empire of Brazil. Born at the Palace of São Cristóvão in Rio de Janeiro, he was the second son and youngest child of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Dona Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies, and thus a member of the Brazilian branch of the House of Braganza. Elias Abraham Rosenberg (Hebrew: אליאס אברהם רוזנברג; Hawaiian: Eliaka Apelahama Loselabeka; c. 1810 – July 10, 1887) was a Jewish immigrant to the United States who, despite a questionable past, became a trusted friend and adviser of King Kalākaua of Hawaii. Regarded as eccentric, he lived in San Francisco in the 1880s and worked as a peddler selling illegal lottery tickets. In 1886, he traveled to Hawaii and performed as a fortune-teller. He served as a Magistrate of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida before being appointed to the Florida Supreme Court.

He was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His service was terminated due to reassignment to the Eleventh Circuit. He was the first African American to serve on a Federal Appeals Court in the Deep South. He served as Chief Judge. He was a Member of the Judicial Conference of the US.

He held an honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) from four institutions, including Florida Memorial College, Stetson Law School, Florida A&M University, and Howard University. An effort to honor him by renaming the United States Courthouse in Tallahassee after him. President Joe Biden signed the measure into law through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on June 25, 2022.

These are some facts and curiosities about Karl Hanke, the last Reichsfuhrer-SS:

He was born on August 24, 1903 in Lauban.

 His older brother was killed in World War I. 

He obtained an education as a milling engineer by attending the German Milling School at Dippoldiswalde. He then decided to obtain a year's practical experience as a railway workshop apprentice before returning to milling.

He joined the Nazi Party on  1 November 1928.

In 1932, Hanke was made chief Gau organizational director and on 1 April 1932, personal adjutant and Referent (advisor) to Goebbels in his capacity as propaganda director of the NSDAP-

He was the first official party to establish contact with the young architect Albert Speer. Hanke contracted Speer to convert a villa in the western suburbs into an office for the local party organization in 1932. Hanke and Speer became close friends.

Adolf Hitler took an early liking to outspoken and handsome young Hanke, and in April 1932, Hanke became a NSDAP delegate to Prussian State Parliament 

In 1938, he was promoted to State Secretary (Deputy Minister) in the Propaganda Ministry.

Skillfully solidifying his position within the party and with Hitler, Hanke joined the "General SS" (Allgemeine-SS) on 25 February 1934.

Hanke's seemingly unstoppable ascent on the coattails of Goebbels came to a sudden, albeit temporary, halt when he was drawn into the marital affairs of Joseph Goebbels and his wife, Magda.

In 1939, Hanke volunteered for military service, having previously obtained a reserve officer's commission. From September to October 1939, he served with the 3rd Panzer Division in Poland.

In Breslau, Hitler appointed Hanke to the position of Gauleiter of Lower Silesia. One year later, SS Chief Heinrich Himmler promoted him to the rank of SS general (SS-Gruppenführer).

He was a fanatical enforcer of Nazi policy: during his rule in Breslau more than 1000 people were executed on his orders, earning him the moniker "Hangman of Breslau".

He also had a long affair with Baroness Freda von Fircks in Breslau, the daughter of a wealthy landowner and University of Berlin lecturer.

 They were finally married on 25 November 1944, after she bore him his only child, a daughter, in December 1943

During the waning months of World War II, as the Soviet army advanced into Silesia and encircled Fortress (Festung) Breslau, Hanke was named by Hitler to be the city's "Battle Commander" 

Hanke's fanaticism and unconditional obedience to Hitler's orders also impressed Hitler, who in his final will appointed him to be the last Reichsführer-SS and Chief of the German Police, replacing Heinrich Himmler 

He died on June 8, 1945.

Minnie Lathan, 41 (USA 1978)

Minnie Delores Brown Lathan was 41 years old and living in Ashtabula, Ohio with her husband. She had an abortion and a tubal ligation done in September of 1978. The abortionist tore her uterus and damaged her bowel, which led to a horrible infection.

Minnie was admitted to Cleveland Clinic Hospital, but they were unable to save her from the infection and injuries inflicted by the abortion that was advertised as “safe and legal”. She died in the hospital on September 25, 1978.

Records from the Ohio Department of Health note that an autopsy was performed after Minnie died, confirming that the injuries from her abortion killed her.

Minnie was survived by her spouse Erskine Lathan, who died just a few years later and was buried by her side.

The myth of “safe abortion” killed Minnie and her baby. Had Minnie known that abortion was so hazardous to her own life, she likely would not have undergone the abortion that left her dying in a hospital with her internal organs torn.

Greta Garbo - The Face of the Century

Greta Garbo (born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden on 18 September 1905) was a Swedish-born actress who built her global appeal on a carefully maintained mystique during her short career. Called "The Face of the Century," she is regarded as one of the Hollywood's greatest beauties.

Garbo was born into a poor family and dropped out of school at 13 to take care of her father. His death deeply affected her and promised to make a life for herself that was void of financial hardship.

Following her father's death, Garbo worked as a salesperson at PUB department store.  After modeling for the store's catalogues, she earned a more lucrative job as a fashion model, which led to a role in her first film in 1922.

She then earned a scholarship at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy, where she met Finnish director Mauritz Stiller, who became her mentor.  Louis B. Mayer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer wanted Stiller in Hollywood. The director agreed to a contract with one condition: Garbo. Reluctantly, Mayer inked her a deal, too.

She made her first MGM film in 1926, and by 1928, had become MGM's highest box-office star with A Woman of Affairs. She followed it up with several more hits, including Camille (1936). Her career slowed down in the 1940s and retired at 35.

After retiring, Garbo declined all opportunities to appear onscreen, shunned publicity, and led a private life. She died, aged 84, in a New York, as a result of pneumonia and renal failure.

• George V (‘Grandpa England’) dies on January 20, 1936. Unable to face ruling without Wallis Simpson by his side, Elizabeth’s uncle, Edward VIII, submits his abdication on December 10, before broadcasting his decision to the nation the following day

• The first Pembroke Welsh corgi, Dookie, arrives at Royal Lodge in the summer of 1933, bred by Miss Evans of Rozavel Kennels in Reigate. He was later joined by Jane

• On her fourth birthday, Elizabeth receives a pony from her grandfather. In 1932, the people of Wales build Y Bwthyn Bach (the Little House) for her—it still stands in the Windsor grounds

Color Sergeant Andrew Jackson Smith (September 3, 1843 - March 4, 1932) was the last African American Civil War soldier to receive a Medal of Honor. He was born enslaved to Susan, an enslaved African American woman, and her white owner, Elijah Smith, in Lyon County, Kentucky. When his father enlisted in the Confederate army, intending to bring him as a servant, he and another enslaved ran away. After walking 25 miles through the rain, they arrived at a Union Army encampment in Smithland, Kentucky. They were admitted to the camp, to remain under the military’s protection, and became a servant to Major John Warner of the 41st Illinois Volunteer Regiment.

He witnessed the battle of Shiloh and sustained a minor injury from a spent bullet. While on a furlough in Illinois, he learned of President Lincoln’s decision to allow African American men to fight for the Union after the Emancipation Proclamation. He left the relative safety of Illinois, a free state, and enlisted with the 55th Massachusetts Colored Volunteers who would soon be sent south.

On November 30, 1864, as part of the Savannah Campaign led by General William T. Sherman, the 55th and other Union regiments engaged Confederate forces at Honey Hill in South Carolina. When an exploding shell killed his unit’s color bearer, he picked up the battle flags and carried them for the rest of the battle. He exposed himself to enemy fire by carrying the flags. He was promoted to color sergeant.

He moved to Eddyville, Kentucky, where he purchased land. Dr. Burt G. Wilder, the 55th Massachusetts surgeon, undertook efforts in the following years to get Smith recognition for his bravery at Honey Hill. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor, but the nomination was denied due to a lack of official reports about his actions. Likely due to suffering an injury early in the battle, the regimental commander had not mentioned his heroism in the battle report. On March 4, 1932,
