I Love "The Jack Benny Program" And I Will Talk About And Analyze It At Length: Part II (The Show)
Last week I started talking about my love for the fantastic radio show: The Jack Benny Radio Program which aired on NBC and CBS from 1932-1955. Here is Part I if you want to read up before we get into Part II.
Tumblr media
There is a reason that The Jack Benny Program ran for 23 years and then got turned into a TV show that then ran for 15 years and that is because this show is REALLY GOOD!
When we're talking best sitcoms of all time I think that The Jack Benny Program definitely needs to be put in the Top Five, hands down. Now let's get into why.
WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT?
The Jack Benny show is a fictionalized account of the life of Jack Benny, the entertainer. As mentioned in Part I, Jack Benny and all of the characters (excluding Rochester) are meant to be exaggerated versions of their actors. You can see this sort of technique used in modern sitcoms like Curb Your Enthusiasm (which can very well be described as a modern Jack Benny Show).
The show follows the life of Jack and the radio show's crew, actors, and writers. This includes Mary Livingston, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Kenny Baker (an early character that would be replaced by Dennis Day), Phil Harris, Bob Crosby (who replaces Phil), Barbra Stanwyck (who appears in the later seasons) and more.
The episodes take place in the CBS and NBC studios, famous LA locations, or Jack's home.
HOW WAS THE SHOW MADE?
Every Sunday at 7:00PM, the show was recorded in front of a live studio audience who can be heard in all of the episodes. Due to the live nature of the show, the cast often would mess up lines or choose to riff and interact with the audience. The video below is a compilation of some of the bloopers.
youtube
The show featured a number of writers (Bill Morrow, Ed Beloin, Al Boasberg, Milt Josefsberg, John Tackaberry, George Balzar, Cy Howard, Sam Perrin) and unlike other programs of the time, Jack always made it known that the show used writers.
One of my favorite jokes in the whole series reflects this (Broadcast September 9, 1954 Timestamp 03:59-04:28):
Jack: So you were paid every week. What good is that? A man needs a little relaxation. I mean, money isn't everything. You oughta realize that.
Bob: Oh, usher! Usher!
Usher: Yes, sir?
Bob: Can you tell me where Mr. Benny's brodacasting from. I must be in the wrong studio.
Jack: No no, Bob, you're not in the wrong studio. It's just I have a new writer and he hasn't grasped my character yet. That's all.
Bob: Well, when he gets his first check he will.
Jack: I guess so. They all do sooner or later.
The show also featured a live orchestra which was directed by Phil Harris and, in the later seasons, Bob Crosby. The orchestra members were often treated like a character though the members rarely spoke. One exception to this is Remly who was a named orchestra member. Remly would often be engaged in some sort of inappropriate situation. In show, the orchestra was made up of a various group of felons, womanizers, drunks, and curious dressers.
In the show's later years, Mary developed a bought of serious stage fright. During these years a variety of tactics were used in order to ensure she and her character could still have a presence in the show:
She would dub in her lines after the show was recorded and before it came up for broadcast. This ensured she was able to do her lines without being intimidated by an audience.
Mary and Jack's daughter, Joan, would read lines for her mother as they sounded similar.
Friend of the show, Barbra Stanwyck, would be written in for an episode and she would explain why Mary wasn't "in the show" while fulfilling Mary's dry comedic role.
THINGS THAT MAKE THE SHOW GREAT:
Okay, so there's a lot in my opinon that makes this show so good.
One!
The comedy comes from the characters which is why so many of the jokes can still feel fresh and modern. (There are some jokes that are so surprising and well crafted that I honest to goodness laugh out loud at them.) I think that this not only comes from the slickness of the writing but also from the fact that the writers were, in their own ways, trying to be subversive.
Mind you this is a 70 year old American show so there are a number of things that have aged poorly. The fact that Rochester never calls any of his cast mates by their first names because he's Black and a servant leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The way that Don's weight is constantly used as a punchline leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The antisemitic tropes used despite the fact that Jack, Mary, and the majority of the writing staff is Jewish leaves a bad taste in mouth. But it seems clear that the writers and actors are not particularly fond of those tropes either.
For example, Rochester often outsmarts Jack or makes the sharp biting quips. Unlike shows of the time like Amos and Andy, Rochester (especially in the later years) never had humor centering on a mocking of his race nor was he the object of ridicule. Characters did not make fun of Rochester in a way that was really unseen at the time in mainstream media.
Here's an example of a joke that displays some of that of subversive humor that makes it last till today (Broadcast: Febraury 18, 1940 Timestamp: 38:28-38:59).
Jack: Very good, Rochester. Very good. Now sing "Scatterbarained"
Rochester: Now, wait a minnute boss-
Jack: I said sing "Scatterbrained"-
Rochester: I'm tired of singing for you all the time. Why don't you put a radio in this car?
Jack: Because I only want to hear what I want to hear. That's why.
Mary: Oh, Jack let him rest. He's been singing for an hour.
Rochester: I don't mind singing, Ms. Livingston, but at 8 o'clock he wants me to imitate Amos and Andy.
Jack: Well-
Rochester: I can't do that Blackface stuff.
Two!
I love how the show breaks the fourth wall and leans into the zaniness you can get by being all audio. This is something you'll see/hear in my own show (i.e The BookMarks, Retribution, and Small Victories) and I think Jack and the gang do a great job of it.
They are never afraid to lean into the truly absurd elements of the show. For example, Jack canonically has had a man locked in his vault basement since the founding of Los Angeles. His parrot, who is played by Mel Blanc, often has very sharp conversations with him, Mary's sister Babe plays for the Green Bay Packers, and every so often a quartet of barbershop singers will appear to serenade/haunt/mock Jack and the cast. The show is never afraid to be ridiculous and I think that is something that could never go out of style.
Three!
The show isn't afraid to switch it up. When you're on the air for 23 years it'd be easy to get stale, but they manage to find ways to keep the show fresh. Sometimes they do murder mysteries. Sometimes they have focus on different characters. They, despite being a sitcom, find different ways to show off character growth without deviating too much from the establish traits. It's very organic and I think that is something that anyone can appreciate.
Well!
It's getting pretty long down here. I hadn't realized I wrote quite so much. Let me let you go, but before I do here is an episode of The JBP that I have been enjoying. The premise is that Jack Benny's famous movie star neighbor, Ronald Colman (think a 40s version of Hugh Grant) is having a movie premiere and Jack was not invited.
The only thing you need to know before you start the episode is that Ronald and his wife, Benita, find Jack extremely annoying and Jack wants to be their friend very badly.
ENJOY!

Malevolent ep 21, “The Unconquerable” Music Timestamps
John: You Call It Madness (I Call It Love) (Russ Columbo, 1932)
Arthur: Faroes Song, Faroes Lullaby (Original pieces by Harlan Guthrie)
Reminiscent: Category for all piano pieces that are not Faroes Song or Faroes Lullaby
Ep 21, “The Unconquerable”
Addison
-2:12 “Reminiscent”
The meeting is reminiscent to the first episode. Arthur tries to play along, but he gives in and tells the Entity he knows what he is. The Entity is skeptical, but Arthur tries to explain anyway
-3:34 “Faroes Song”
It’s light, slow and airy.
Arthur explains everything to the Entity. He tries telling him that he wanted to be so much more than the Kinf, to be human. He calls him John, and the Entity is confused. He laughs, and says the game is up.
-5:39 “Reminiscent”
Arthur finds his leg is fine. He realizes Katne did it on purpose to ensure he lives. He curses at the Entity for calling him friend. He is pissed.
-6:21 “Faroes Lullaby”
Arthur talks about Lilly. How John could forget who brought him humanity, had changed him. The Entity tries to threaten Arthur. It does not work.
-7:24 “Reminiscent”
Arthur is unfazed by the Entities threats. He threatens to send the Entity back to the Dark World, saying that the Glass of Cana can send him back. This is a lie. The Entity finally complies with Arthur and tells him what he sees.
-8:04 “Reminiscent”
The Entity describes their surroundings, notably a rifle mounted on the wall.
-10:42 “Reminiscent”
Arthur jumped the gun, tried to make the Entity remember anything, to no evail. This isn’t John. “You’re just Yellow” Arthur says. Yellow tells hom to send him back, but Arthur says he can’t, because he owes his friend to try and save him. Yellow says they owe each other nothing, that he’s a prisoner trapped in Arthur’s eyes. Since Yellow remembers nothing, Arthur says he’ll send Yellow back after he hels him find Anna Stanczyk.
Arthur says he was foolish to think Yellow was anything but a monster.
Yellow says Arthur is nothing but a mortal.
-14:22 “Reminiscent”
Yellow asks what happened to Arthurs hand, and he tells him about the forest. The wood looks like dark bone. Yellow asks if it hurts, and laughs when Artur says he would like that.
-14:55 “Faroes Song”
As Arthur changes, Yellow points out he is thin. Artur says he was nearly starved to death, and Yellow says that sounds like something he’d do. Yellow asks condescendingly if Arthur really beat him, and Arthur says he’d do it again.
-17:02 “Reminiscent”
Arthur says John used to be more appreciative of “this aspect of the job.” Yellow calls him weak, but Arthur says he was the farthest thing from it. He says weakness isn’t wishing to be mortal or enjoying life, but to think power makes you more valuable. Yellow says Arthur has the power to send him back, making Arthur valuable.
17:29 “Faroes Song” begins.
Arthur says power is not making him valuable, thats Yellow needing something of him, needing a mere mortal.
Yellow calls his logic stretched. He says his power makes him valuable, not who he is or his capability. He says he only needs him because of what he can do for him.
Arthur asls if weakness is needing someone for no other reason than who they are, and Yellow answers yes.
Arthur says that’s what happened to John, and Yellow calls him weak.
Arthur asks Yellow if he wonders why John yearned for humanity, and Yellow says it was because he had no other options.
Arthur says the fact that Yellow doesn’t question himself shows how limited he is compared to John.
Arthur says John is a better person than Yellow ever could be. Yellow points out that Arthur doesn’t question his own beliefs.
-19:05 “Reminiscent”
Jack Larsons name is on the paper. Yellow says the illegible handwriting is sad and pathetic. Arthur asks if he pities him, and Yellow denies.
-22:28 “Reminiscent”
Arthur is annoyed at how hard Yellow tries to win over every argument. He calls him a petulant child being told no for the first time. Arthur says, the first time around, he was scared, and thats what Yellow wants again, so hes saying things in hoping they stick to hold over his head. He tells him to just do the smart thing and work with him, and that gods shoudln’t care about arguing with a mortal.
-24:39 “Reminiscent”
They find a lamp in the storm, still hot. The snow beside is trampled, as if fallen on and then running. The tracks lead deeper into the forest. Where they stop, blood paints the snow, as if the person was dragged.
-27:12 “Reminiscent”
They fight over the fact that Yellow hardly remembers being the King. Arthur says he chpse this life, that he was helping Yellow. Yellow says Arthur imprisoned him. Before they can argue more, wolves enter the scene.
-28:44 “Faroes Song”
Airy, slow and light.
Arthur says he may be being unreasonable and unable to see Yellows perspective. Arthur says he did what he did for their frienship, and that it was easy to take away the parts of John he hated, especially when he hurt him. Yellows representation reminds him of the pain from both John and the King, but he says he may not be being fair. He apologizes.
Yellow is confused.
Arthur says he doesn’t know what Yellow knows or if he’s truthful, but he did force him here.
-30:28 “Reminiscent”
They come across a tavern, the Red Right Hand, three dead wolves hung by their feet at the front of the building.
-36:46 “Literal Hell”
A man in the tavern hits the piano. This cannot even be classified as playing it. After a moment, he actually begins to play an eerie tune as the rest of the tavern bangs on the tables.
The song speeds up as the people of the tavern dance.
Arthur begins to laugh, and the people begin looking at him. He begins to spiral as if being poisoined. The Bartender says there is a room upstairs, bed and bath for a dollar.
Yellow tells him they can’t sleep here, but Arthur makes his way to go anyway.
-42:30 “Reminiscent”
Yellow is at a loss for words from seeing the dancing. Watching people move without reason, simply to express. Arthur asks if he likes music, and Yellow says sure. Arthur says he played music, Yellow doesn’t care. Arthur says he knows, but he can hope he will. Yellow says humans hope so much, wasting so much on it, and that is why they are weak.
Arthur says hope is what gives people strength. Hope is about having the will to press on.
44:14 “Faroes Song”
Arthur recites a poem.
It goes as is:
“Out of the night that covers me.
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.”
Yellow asks if he wrote it, and Arthur answers no, someone more human than he, did.
Yellow asks why he shared it, and Arthur answers because its beautiful, it makes him feel strong. Yellow tells Arthur to sleep off the sick feeling. As Arthur yawns, Yellow says
“This, too, shall pass.”

MICHEL LEGRAND
Michel Jean Legrand (Paris, 24. Februar 1932 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 26. B. „The Thomas Crown Affair“ (mit dem bekannten Thema „Les Windmills of Your“) Mind, „The Windmills of Your Thought“), Summer of 42 und Yentl. Er komponierte die Musik für das Kinder-Franchise „Once Upon a Time…“, mit Ausnahme der ersten Staffel „Once Upon a Time… Man“ (1978). American Girl Birthdays - updated through 03/18/2023
I got inspired by @addywalkerstan‘s quick analysis of AG birthdays and wanted to see 1) when every confirmed birthday was relative to each other, and 2) when the unconfirmed bdays could potentially be.
All of the Historical characters and a few Contemporaries have confirmed birthdays, either in the books or via American Girl’s social media. Here is my list of confirmed birth months and dates; under the cut will be speculation on the Unknowns.

~November 8 - Isabelle Palmer (2004) [sources under the cut]
no confirmed birthdays for December
Isabelle Palmer Birthday: born Autumn 2004; she is nine in Isabelle, which takes place at the beginning of the school year, and she is ten in Designs by Isabelle, which ends around Winter Break. Isabelle states in Chapter 4 of Designs that her tenth birthday was the week before the book began. There are still “a few weeks” before the performance in December, so her birthday is late Autumn, likely late October–early November.
However, back in 2014, Isabelle’s actress Erin Pitt did make a post on November 8 2014, reading “Happy birthday Isabell![sic] I’m so glad I could spend that time with you.” [x] Not sure if she was referring to the girl she’s taking a picture with or the character, but considering Pitt was there with an Isabelle doll, Nov 8 is a likely date!
Speculated Dates:
Now, here’s how I’m going with speculation: I’m going to negate the time period in which the girls’ books take place, as their birthdays would have been mentioned. Gwen, Sonali and Logan could be exempt from this since they had no books from their POV, but this is speculation, not fact, so let’s go.
Lindsey Bergman - born 1991. Her book takes place during the school year, seemingly not winter, so likely Spring or Autumn. I wasn’t quite sure if her story took place during the beginning or end of the school year, which would help decode whether it was Spring or Autumn; if anyone knows send me a message. Otherwise, her birthday is likely in Summer or Winter. Though, personally, I think it would be cute if her birthday was September 01, since she was first released on that date in 2001.
Kailey Hopkins - born 1993. Her book takes place during the summer of 2003, so her birthday is likely during Spring, Autumn or Winter.
Marisol Luna - born 1995. Her book takes place from October 22-29 2005, so her birthday is not within those dates.
Jess McConnell - born 1996. Her book begins in January; Sarita is on school break, so it’s probably her winter break? So Jess was born anytime but mid-January.
Nicki Fleming - born 1997. Her series takes place from Spring to Autumn 2007, with a break over Summer and with the story ending around December 2. However, there is a break between November 2 and December 2, in which Nicki’s twin sisters age a month. Nicki’s specific age is not mentioned in the second book, so her birthday could be Summer, November 3-December 1, or later in Winter.
Mia St Clair - born 1998. Her first book takes place roughly in the autumn and ends in early January; her second book takes place the next autumn. So she’s likely a Spring, Summer or late Winter (late Jan-Feb) birthday.
Chrissa Maxwell, Gwen Thompson, Sonali Matthews - born 1999. Their story takes place during the Spring of 2009, around Valentine’s Day (February 14) and the beginning of the Autumn 2009 school year. The Minnesota 2009 school year ended at about June 30, 2009, and began again Tuesday August 25. So birthdays could be before February 14, during the Summer, late Autumn or Winter.
Lanie Holland - born 2000. Series takes place from Spring through Summer 2010, so her birthday is likely in Autumn or Winter.
Kanani Akina - born 2001. Series takes place over the Summer of 2011, so her birthday is likely in Spring, Autumn or Winter.
McKenna Brooks - born 2002. Her first book begins in September, with her gymnastics meet in November. Her second book begins two months before “March-fest,” which would put it in January. I doubt she has a December birthday as her aging up would have been mentioned, but it’s still possible. McKenna was born anytime between April–August or (unlikely) December.
Gabriela McBride - born 2006. Her series takes place June 23-November 11 2017. Her birthday could be any date but those.
Tenney Grant and Logan Everett - born 2005/2004 respectively. Theirs ended up being really complicated so see below.
Suzanne “Z” Yang - born 2004. Series takes place April 3 to Mid-Summer 2017, so her birthday could be January-April 2 or in Autumn/Winter.
Gwynn Tan - born 2015. Corinne’s first book takes place in the Winter, likely November as Corinne and Gwynn are in school and Winter Break is not mentioned. It does take place over several weeks, so perhaps November to early December? The second book takes place at the beginning of spring, so late March; we then have a camping trip that is at the beginning of Summer, and a three-month timeskip afterwards to the end of Summer. Gwynn could have been born January–early March, April–early May, mid-Summer or September–October.
Tenney and Logan information:
According to her journal, Tenney begins Saturday October 1 2016 and ends Monday November 14 2016, throughout which she is definitely twelve.
Tenney: In the Key of Friendship picks up March 4 2017 and ends May 2-5 2017; her journal stops at May 5 but the plot of In the Key ends at about May 2. Tenney is still twelve during this period (Chap.11 of In the Key)
Tenney Shares the Stage is still during the school year, and my research shows the 2016-17 school year ended in Nashville at ~May 25, so Shares the Stage is sometime in May. Logan is fourteen by this point (Chap.1)
A Song for the Season, meanwhile, takes place early November to December, with Chapter 1 being “already November”, and the tour taking place “six weeks” later, the “day after school lets out for winter break” and ending on Christmas. From what I can tell, Winter Holidays in Nashville schools went from roughly December 18 2017-January 2 2018. The six-week date was given to Tenney on a Wednesday, which would put that day at about November 8, and the beginning of the book was just a few days before, on a day before a school day, so I believe it was a Sunday, so that would be the 5th. Tenney and Logan’s ages are not stated in this book.
Logan’s birthday is not from November ~5 to December 25. Since he could be 13 in In the Key, it’s hard to tell if he was born anytime from March to May, but he was fourteen before ~May 6. He and Tenney were not friends by the third book so he likely wouldn’t have mentioned his birthday previous to it, however she did know he was fourteen by Shares the Stage, so I presume at some point she asked someone. So his birthday is before ~May 6, or sometime from roughly May 25–November 5.
Tenney’s birthday, meanwhile, may be easier to find. Because her journal was given to her for her birthday, as stated from a note at the beginning of the book. Tenney’s first entry is on the 9th, though it doesn’t mention her birthday, and neither does the end of her journal on the next May 5. Tenney’s birthday is somewhere between May 6-8.

Search issues: “Peter Lorre” isn’t always mentioned in online details of the shows he was on, and search doesn’t always work well even when he is! It helps if you know the name/sponsor of the radio show. In a few cases I haven’t verified if Lorre really appeared, such as with that first Arch Oboler or Amos and Andy. Boris Karloff is also sometimes mistaken for Peter Lorre. :/

Malevolent Episode 19 “The Prison” music timestamps
John: You Call It Madness (I Call It Love) (Russ Columbo, 1932)
Arthur: Faroes Song (Original piece by Arthur)
Faroes Lullaby (an “important song”, has to do with Faroe)
Reminiscent: Category for all the piano pieces that are not Faroes Song and A Lullaby
Ep 19, “The Prison”
-3:07 “Faroes Song”
A deep, slow version plays.
A leg is dropped down into the prison pits for Arthur, slightly cooked, and water is refilled. John tells him they’re trying to starve him. They make another tally on the wall, 85 days now.
A pause as Arthur asks how long it’s been now.
-4:25 the song becomes the original tune as Arthur repeats “3 months.” Arthur eats as John talks about a plan, using water to use on the dirt to make a solid platform. They won’t let Arthur die, they’ll refill the water. Arthur says the King is winning, and John stops him before they start arguing. John wants to make a clay hill to climb out, they’re close.
-5:56 “Reminiscent”
Arthur wants to be ready to face the monsters, doesn’t want to be thrown into another pit where they have to start all over.
-6:58 “Faroes Lullaby”
Arthur finally talks about his dream that night. He was on a pier as the waves rumbled beneath. The sun was setting, the birds were loud, it was breezy, and Arthur cuts off before he says someone else was there. They had an agreement, that Arthur would say as much as he wanted about his dreams, as long as Faroe wasn’t in them. Arthur angrily says John agreed to never mention her name again.
-10:18 “Faroes Song”
A deep, slow version plays.
John wants to leave, believing they can. He says Arthur is clinging to it, like he does with everything, unable to move on. He says a day isn’t going to change anything, that Mr.Fausts femur is as sharp as it’s gonna get and they can escape now.
Arthur says he’s scared, that they’ve been here for months and Arthur won’t survive another failure.
John mentions plan B.
-12:10 “Reminiscent”
They decide they want to get out finally, either climbing out or finding a way to bring one of the guards down, anything but wasting away. They’re going to try and climb out, jump and reach to climb out.
-13:58 “Faroes Song”
Light, airy and shrouded by unfamiliar notes, but still similar to the beginning of the song.
They argue about being out of sync. Arthur says they’ll never going to “get that back” and that “too much has been said. Too much pain. Too many lies.”
They try again.
-15:20 “Faroes Song”
Light and airy and slow.
Arthur gets out. John cheers him on as Arthur relishes in the moment through tears.
-16:04 “Reminiscent”
John describes the cavern-like area that is the prison pits. It’s a field of stalagmites, like a forest. There seems to be a way out. A thin mist covers the ground and obscures some of the pits.
-20:25 “Reminiscent”
Arthur wants to go back and give the person in the pit water, saying he doesn’t want to be a monster. John says he’s not, that he’s surviving and that he needs to run and not look back. Arthur does not want to world to overrun him, won’t let it corrupt his heart and mind. He doesn’t want to lose who he is. John tells him it isn’t a fight for his soul, but Arthur says it is. Arthur says the King is trying to “win” him, in whatever way he can, tricking his mind or berating his soul.
John asks him what happens if they throw them back in the pit.
Arthur says “from pole to pole.”
John asks what he means, and Arthur says it’s not for him. His thoughts.
-22:28 “Reminiscent”
The creature is a cana, and knows Arthur’s name. They can help. The king did not trap them, he does not know they are even here.
They say the world awaits Arthur’s return. Beyond, there is a red lake, and beside it, the “Ten Thousand Steps.” At the top, a city. At the gates, to tor right, is a path to the plateau. The worlds are thin and one can barter passage home.
Arthur helps the Cana out, dropping the board in for them to climb and grabs their hand. It’s webbed and wet, small, similar to a frog.
Its name is Lorick.
Lorick leads them another way, their original path not being the way out.
-25:37 “Reminiscent”
They are free. They are at the outskirts of a barren stone field, still deep underground, but out. Lorick tells him to keep his hope close, it is attractive to those who dwell in the dark.
Lorick cannot go with them, but points the way to the red lake, toward the glistening ice pillars.
Lorick was imprisoned for helping another like Arthur escape.
-27:54 “Faroes Lullaby”
Arthur is crying. He cannot remember the last time he felt so hopeful, so good.
-30:26 “Faroes Song”
A deep, slow version.
John is trying to understand emotions, what it feels like to be overcome with “joy(?)”
Arthur tells him to fuck off, and John is confused. Arthur says it took everything for him to open up to John and John threw it in his face, and says “don’t make me pity you.”
John says it’s been so long, but Arthur doesn’t calm down, it was nothing compared to how long Arthur carried it with him, and how, after John pushed and pushed, He threw it in his face.
John says he’s sorry, that he’s said it and will say it again, and Arthur brings up Emily and why he killed her.
John says it was because he’s the King in Yellow, that he’s owning his mistake, and says Emily was nothing but a tool he couldn’t use.
-31:50 “Reminiscent”
John is not okay with the fact that he killed Emily. He says Arthur views him without conflict, as if he’s whole and that he’s the person he always intended to be. He’s trying to be who he should’ve long ago. It doesn’t come without pain. He’s trying to be a better version of himself, he’s messing up as he goes, but it doesn’t make him a monster. It makes him human.
He does not need Arthur’s care or pity, just needs him to know he’s sorry.
Arthur accepts.
-34:32 “Reminscent”
The cheery, optimistic tune.
There is a timid animal. Safe looking. Like a large cow, about 5 feet tall from the ground and walks on all fours, and oinks like a pig. It’s like a cross between an elephant and an anteater, and covered in moss. Arthur seems happy.
The animal seems peaceful, John is still cautious, but Arthur is happy and tries to get it to come over. It likes the insects on Arthur.
Arthur pets it.
It seems to be a work animal, and it likes Arthur. Arthur likes it as well, but they must leave.
It follows.
It offers Arthur some sort of vegetation. He takes it, amused.
John names it Lilly.
The harness is tight, cutting into her. Arthur asks if she’d like to go free. He removes the harness. Lilly walks off.
-39:19 “Reminiscent”
The happy song.
Lilly is the name of the nurse when Arthur was in the coma. The one who called him John Doe.
Johns never brought up the name before, but he’s been carrying it with him ever since. He says it felt fitting, no use carrying a name around. Arthur says, sometimes, carrying a name can be important, to remember who you are or what you want to be. He says you don’t have to lose the name because you gave it away, or forget the time.
John interrupts him as they arrive at the lake.
-41:10 “Faroes Song”
Light, airy, and slow.
John asks if Arthur still intends for them to be separated. As Arthur replies Yes, John says there’s no need for empty platitudes, then.
-41:40 “Reminiscent”
Arthur says it isn’t impossible John will get his own body. John sounds doubtful, dismissive even. Arthur says that, if they can get out somewhat unscathed, they can figure out their next step, including their separation. There’s
42:14 “Faroes Song” begins. They review their leads, from back to JD Ackerman, the bookseller, to Amanda’s letter, to Anna Stancyzk, thinking she’s the next piece of the puzzle. Arthur suggests going back to the mansion to look for clues and where Anna may have gone.
-44:09 “Reminiscent”
The city gates are visible from where they are. John says somethings odd about the steps, a supernatural force propelling them.
The Trader is back, and he scares them. Johns laugh is nice. The Trader was behind them.
-47:05 “Reminiscent”
The Trader has all their things they lost when they were sent to the Prison Pits. He says he obtained them fairly. Arthur accuses him of stealing, but the Trader says prisoners have no items.
-48:16 “Faroes Song”
Light, airy and slow.
Arthur is mad at the Trader, saying he could have helped, but instead took advantage of them. He wants all of the Traders loot in turn for the tofflebol.
-49:09 “Reminiscent”
Arthur chooses his chosen item from the Traders loot. He takes interest in the small, ornate metal box; like a jewelry box. It has the painting of a girl on it. She is holding a red flower and has a bonnet. Arthur makes John open it.
49:55 “Faroes Lullaby” plays as a music box.
Nobody speaks.
Arthur is furious, asking where the Trader found it. The Trader points to the gates, saying “the city.”
Arthur takes the music box.
Arthur says John said she wouldn’t be here. Faroe.
Arthur gave her that music box. It was their song, only hers.
51:00 “Faroes Lullaby” plays as piano ambience.
John reminds Arthur where they must go, not into the city, to consider that the King might have done something. Arthur says the King didn’t know, he couldn’t have, the same way he didn’t know Faroe died until he told John. Faroe was buried with the music box. It shouldn’t be here. He wonders if Faroe is here as well. Nothing makes sense.
Arthur says if his path is preordained as the cultists seem to think, he cannot afford to not know.
The gates are heavy, the Kings symbol carved in. The oath curves around the city walls and leads up to a way home.
Arthur says he has to try. He wont be able to live with himself without knowing for certain if she was or wasn’t here, needing him, hoping he would rescue her.
John says he understands, and Arthur pushes open the doors.
