i dont consider vlinnny a "character" in my mind even though fundamentally he is but him being attached to a streamer both for "inlore" reasons and "hes a shitpost" reasons and "internet lore" reasons makes it hard for me to think of him as a character in the default meaning of the word even though he basically kinda is
hes like, an experience, an appearance, i like this homunculus of a dumbass ugly idea

#dax rambles#yes it looks complete fucking garbage but like#wow no way the billion dollar highest-selling game franchise got a terrible movie?#the franchise that has been a cash cow for over a decade?#people going on about how “MINECRAFT IS ABOUT THE UNIVERSE AND LIFE IT IS NOT CRINGE!!!! IT IS HECKIN DEEP AND STUFF!!”#is just so moronic lol#i agree that minecraft -- especially early days -- is very special and has this feeling to it that is weirdly magical and beautiful#but at the end of the day it's a silly fucking block game about creativity (that's a complaint i do agree with for the movie as well)#no minecraft wasn't designed to be this super deep subtly narrative-driven game the end poem doesn't actually mean anything#notch just wanted something weird for the end credits and the guy delievered lol#like obviously people's interpretations of the end poem are great and i love that and feeding into it for the movie would've been kino but#it's so tiring seeing people acting like minecraft is actually this super 2deep4u game when it really is not#again this is a billion-dollar franchise i expected the movie to be slop the moment is was announced i really do not care lmfao#people asking to boycott and shit is fucking hilarious though like it does not even matter at all LOL#like genuinely just who gives a shit it was going to be bad and looks bad if you don't want to see it then don't watch it#originally i was going to see it for a laugh but it just looks so boring not even funny-bad so i'm not bothering lol#not even because i'm “boycotting” i just don't care it looks terrible#saying this as someone who very much grew up with minecraft i've been playing since fucking alpha 1.1.2#and lord knows how much of an impact it made on me for many many reasons LMAO#but yeah no people are reading way too deep into it and getting way too mad over it#it's just kind of ridiculous

I loved how NEO pulled the rug out with Rindo’s character. At first, he generally seems much more sociable and outwardly friendly compared to Neku and then the game quickly goes "yeah, nah, he’s a huge fucking mess too." He’s a good kid fundamentally at his core but he can also be whiny, hypocritical, passive-aggressive, and kind of insensitive at times. He has a tendency to be judgemental and harsh to the people around him while not acknowledging his own faults, like when he complains about Beat joining the team even though he saved their lives beforehand because he’s not Neku or when he gives Fret shit for fawning over Eiji Oji and Kanon while falling for Motoi’s BS. He’s so pessimistic about himself and others that not even a death game that heavily emphasizes the value of teamwork can get him to fully come out of his shell, which is where his time-travel powers come in AND EVEN THEN it’s a double-edged sword since on one hand, it forces him to actively step up to the plate and survey the situation to find the best possible solution, which leads to him slowly growing out of his shell, but on the other, it also leads to him becoming overly reliant on his time travel so that he can walk back from potentially life-changing decisions without having to worry about it since he has a magic reset button. Which ends up biting him in the ass. Hard.
He’s one of those types of people who is ultimately a thinker and planner instead of a do-er, but his being young and overly impressionable takes this personality quirk to such an extreme that he's foundationally useless to most groups. He’s the type of person who you have in a group project who sits around and does nothing, but then complains with the project does poorly because he couldn't be bothered to speak.
He's so unconfident and directionless that he uses effectively Instagram as a means to listen to someone who sounds like some 2deep4u philosopher post dumb flowery bullshit that effectively has all the meaning of "Drink water when you're thirsty." and he admits to finding such "deep" meaning in these posts that it supposedly helped him through life. Because he's 15 and doesn't know anything.
However, all of this makes him interesting as a character because he’s, again, still a fundamentally good kid at his core. While he’s shown to have a fuse, he is also the kind of person who has the ability to think his emotions through. That's what we ultimately see when he and Fret finally talk and drop their beef. The game depicting Rindo's capacity for self-awareness and emotional reflection is a positive revelation of his character strengths. He proves that he's capable of recognizing when he's in the wrong and knows how to apologize, a trait he shows quite a few times throughout the story, while also doing everything he can to set things right as well as be more understanding toward how his friends feels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s kind of the guy who will drop everything to help a little kid out, even when there’s no tangible benefit to doing so and he and the others are shown to be on limited time, shows empathy to his friends/fallen enemies, and feels massive amounts of guilt for his actions, even if he didn’t know better at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, the entire endgame is fueled by his selfish yet understandable desire to save the people he cares about most from total erasure, to the point that he’s willing to risk thousands of lives to do so. But not only is he shown to be internally grappling with himself regarding his decision but he’s also willing to take responsibility and ensure that EVERYTHING goes right not just for himself and his friends but the people of Shibuya in general, in a parallel to Neku’s own selfish if understandable decision to put the bonds he formed in the original game (particularly with Joshua) over the actual city.
Tumblr media
Characters aren't interesting simply by switching between 2 different character traits. They're interesting when all those traits are being expressed at the same time for reasons that are consistent within their internal logic. You gotta be a good writer to pull that off and you gotta know when to show off these dimensions during your story to achieve proper dramatic effect when the time calls for it and NEO I feel does this pretty damn well.

Not a hot take, a general question
What are levels that most hate that you enjoy, and levels that most enjoy that you hate? :>
Sorry this took a few days, but I've been trying to stick with examples that are near-unanimously loved or hated rather than being simply divisive. I also excluded examples of the "this game in general has weird physics, etc" variety… with one exception that won't surprise you.
I Give It a Gex/10:
Marble - The level design is blocky, though I can forgive that more than most since it was the first game, but the aesthetic is really unique for a lava stage, let alone the first one in the series.
Labyrinth - This one is cheating because I'm mainly including it for various mods that have given it a serious glow up, such as the Mania Misfits Pack. As such, I can't bring myself to hate the original, because I always think of those versions now.
Sky Base - Autoscrolling doesn't work so well for Sonic, but conceptually it's a climactic zone.
Wacky Workbench - Growing up is when you realise it's not a tragedy, but a comedy. Whereas other people jeer at it, I jeer with it. Also, the Good Future is beautiful, and so is the Past.
Marble Garden - Slightly downplayed since few outright hate it, but it's often considered the weakest zone in S3&K. I don't know how this can be, given the music, the spinning tops, the boss encounter with Tails helping you out, and the gratuitous pools of Pepsi.
Sandopolis - Act 1 is perfectly fine in my book, and I will not sit here while fans continue to slander it. Act 2 may involve a lot of stopping and waiting, but even so, I find it less tedious than other examples.
Egg Rocket - I really love the concept here, and while it kicked my shit in as a young'un, I don't think it's that bad as an adult.
Mania's Oil Ocean - I saw frequent complaints about why they included this zone, to which I say "Did you forget about the Fire Shield? Did you forget about the remixes?"
This Is Like Underselling Eggman At Crusher's House:
Prison hallway levels in SA2 - Overly cramped grey hallways are not particularly fun. And before someone points out the small graphical details, yes, those are nice and all, but ultimately they can't change how I feel about these stages overall. While I'm not keen on the mech shooting in SA2 in general, the other stages at least give you some room to breathe.
Lost Impact - I feel like this one stage has received the '06 treatment where it was once hated, but is now hailed as a 2deep4u masterpiece because of vibes and interpretation. This is not the case with me. I don't care what your intention is, I don't care what infinite IQ stunt you're pulling with your method of gameplay and story integration: if it's not fun, you've lost me. "But Crusher, this is perfect because it compliments the context of the story, it makes you feel just like Shadow in his situation, muh deep layers would be lost if it was actually enjoyable-" Call me basic, but if the only way you can paint a narrative is by making it shite, I don't think I can trust you with anything. And remember, this is Sonic the Hedgehog, not some indie RPG that most people watch other people's playthroughs of rather than play it themselves.
'06 Crisis City - Generic dilapidated city is not too interesting, despite the tornado carrying a car's best efforts. The Generations version is thankfully salvaged by having fun level design, even if it's the same aesthetically.
All the islands in Frontiers - The Cyber Space stages don't count since they're just Non-Specific Highway and reused Generations assets. Otherwise… well, as you might have guessed by now, bland atmosphere is my Kryptonite. I can put up with some questionable design choices if it's at least memorable in other areas, as that can soften the blow for me to an extent, but if it can't even provide the latter, it makes the former so much more excruciating for me. Needless to say, I do not have much nice things to say about Grass Simulator, Sand Simulator, Rock Simulator, Grass Simulator 2: The Return of Jafar, or Grass Simulator 3: This Is Why Eggman's In Mario Land Now.

Christopher Nolan movies are trite garbage that seem better than they are because of slick visuals and thin veneer of being 2DEEP4U, when in reality the characters are paper-thin, the plots make no sense and the movies are entirely uncreative.
Nolan takes really good ideas and turns them into heist movies about broody rich guys.

8, 11, 12 for spaceboys
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
every bro who thinks this show is a perfect analogue to their rl politics…or likewise that the show is mocking said bros bc theyre incapable of confronting the fact that fascists will use anything to justify their ideology & that there is an air of revanchism/reactionary sentiment in the text that the author presumes the audience/reader will think of as morally dubious (if not evil downright. think of the ‘i want to be a good friend, but not a master or servant’ speech. which i rly do think is the central idea of the text. but maybe thats me projecting too? we are all a bit of a hypocrite). i just feel like for some ppl this is their first anime that isnt battle shounen that theyre like OMG its #2DEEP4U like omggg. looking at tanaka’s other works or even at yang wenli’s character who serves as an authorial proxy + his own in universe character arc which i <3 in mind tanaka seems to be more interested in how mythology + historiography is constructed than he is rly the minutiae of political reforms and the precision of things (if the 50 billion people that seem to die in every space battle didnt clue u in alr). idk. maybe im stupid. but also ppl who take ‘hey, maybe annerose had any sort of feelings about her brother & having to take on being the retroactive justification for his conquest’ (like they even call her the mother of space or something to that affect?? thats a heavy burden for one woman to hold. she didnt even ask for this. reinhard didnt even do anything to frederich like he died .. no one had to free annerose) to be ‘ur calling annerose a bitch?’. it doesnt help that theres not enough textually of annerose, but the fact that a lot of her screentime / page time is ominously prescient warnings on the nature of power v. reinhard’s disposition is something??? sieg if my brother stops listening to you then my brother is lost.. is that not a sign of some complex feelings about her brother or at the very least, the man her brother has / could / and did become? also queer readings that try to divorce the militaristic elements when so much of the subtext is wrapped around nascent homoeroticism typical in military /‘ male ‘ dominant fields. thinking about kircheis being the most physically imposing but the most gentle, and while he is reinhard’s dead wife his bond with reinhard is also wrapped in a shared militaristic ambition of ‘taking space’. half of what i have is urs! paralleled to reuenthal & mittermeyer - mittermeyer being the only dude who could beat up reuenthal, them being reinhard’s shuangbi /twin stars/pillars bc of their skills in combat... could i have been married too, like mittermeyer? hell naw hilde + oberstein being outsiders in the empire bc they do not commandeer fleets. yang being ‘useless below the neck’ is a joke but its something.
11. number of fandom-related words you've filtered
actually dont filter much cuz spaceboys fandom on here is dead but i refuse to go on certain platforms LOL
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
once again its dead on here idkkk. whats unpop v pop. despite being an OG in this spaceboy shit.. ik the way i liked reuenthal was unpop until nat & wiaw omg Reuenthal’s rebellion as a final act of loyalty + M.A.(S).D. thesis but fr evil seme reuenthal & boring self insert yang all 2018 by ppl who didnt even touch the OVA hurt my soul…what was they doing to my queens💔💔💔 there is no why u should like reuenthal thesis he should be killed with rocks but the ova did something incidentally (or purposefully?) thats haunted me for centuries. everybody likes reinhard and reuenthal in the wrong ways. anne rice interrogating the text fron the wrong pov voice

Between Adventure 2 having a filmed execution and an ill little girl getting killed, Secret Rings having a strongly implied abusive romance, Shadow having a comet-induced alien plague, Frontiers having you face death (Straight. Up.), not to mention the Zombot apocalypse in early IDW, where does Starline kidnapping kids, stuffing machinery into them, brainwashing them, gaslighting them, killing and reviving them, and actively tormenting them fall on the franchise's Gratuitous Grimness scale?
It somehow manages to be tryhard and toothless at the same time.
I say that because on one hand, they really try to drive home how Surge and Kit are such poor wittle victims, how Starline is oh-so-evil for experimenting on them (and thus more evil than Eggman, even though Eggman has done objectively worse things on a much more regular basis), and tries to present a 2deep4u conflict for Sonic... on the other hand, Surge falls on her face like a slapstick clown and generally acts like a Twitch streamer, Kit stands around being a forgettable simp, and the whole thing is resolved with no resolution at all. Sonic's happy, so you should be too! Now direct your attention to Sally Sheeples! Aren't Tangle and Whisper so Stunning and Brave?
As far as dark subjects that you can get away with in this franchise go, I don't think the basic concept with Surge and Kit and their backstory is too out-of-bounds. But execution matters, and just like certain other examples (like '06 and Frontiers), it wasn't anywhere to be found here.
