Finished book 2 of Crystal Society. I enjoyed it about as much as the first book, though I do have a few quibbles, and I think I might have liked it better if it hadn't had so many cases of outside perspective and stuck with Face (or aspects of Face).

Spoilers follow.

About halfway through the book, Face undergoes a radical change in personality and goals, essentially an entirely new character. This makes sense narratively, but it's very close to being a protagonist switch, and I could feel some of my investment bleeding away. I had enjoyed reading about the old Face, I guess, particularly the prospect that Face had divided up into virtually-embodied aspects that interacted with each other, and it felt like that lasted for only about a chapter. And New Face is less personable, less distinctive, which is a problem.

Stuff I liked:

The route-hack and workaround stuff, as well as some of the exploits.

Some of the shock-value dissonance when Face does things that would be insane to a human.

Most of the social manipulation stuff, which I think it at its best when I have some sense of what's being done and why, and can track it (or have it explained to me) rather than just "hey, I did this, and it worked", though it's hard for me to tease apart which falls into what category.

Setting up the three-way war was a really strong ending for the book.

Stuff I quibble with:

The book has autofabs, and while there are several 3D printers in our house, I think some of the things these autofabs are doing come close to being magic. The thing I'm particularly raising an eyebrow at are all the things that require microchips. I'm reading this as a physical book, so couldn't ctrl+F, and it's possible I missed something.

There are a few times in the book when there's some segregation of cause and effect, at least narratively, and there are many ways in which the motives of characters (particularly the AI ones) are opaque. The one that stood out to me most is the attack by the aliens against the base, which completely disrupts everything that had been going on, and doesn't feel motivated. I was left wondering whether this was caused by one of the characters, whether it was someone's gambit, but it felt like it came out of nowhere. ("Knowing what's happening and why" is one of those "unrealistic" things that I think is often very important to fiction unless you're really trying to evoke a feeling of "gotta roll with the punches in this random and chaotic world that's so hard to understand".)

I do want to know what's going on with Earth. I do want to know exactly what Growth did to make Acorn and how that works, and the negotiation that Dream and Vista had to become Vision. We're stuck in the viewpoint of Face, and I feel like sometimes we hop over to someone else who is less connected to the main plot, but not someone who is more connected to the main plot?

I'm onto book 3 now, and curious where the story is going, since a battle between superintelligences with their own specializations sounds great, yet my impression of audience reception is lukewarm.

Sending some tips I've learned, so other people can learn it before making the same mistakes I have!(I figure you have better reach than me!) Pictures of 3ds as payment, one with the splasg screen and one with the home screen!

Now, onto the tips!

If you are going to buy replacement/spare styluses, make sure you look for ones For Your Model!!! I bought a 4 pack of styluses only to learn later that they were made for the old normal sized 3ds, and so wouldn't fit in my 3ds! While this isn't a HUGE inconvenience, it meant I kept losing them! (Side note: replacement styluses are very cheap to get! I now have 5 on my own, and I gave one to a friend and lost another!)

You don't have to buy the traditional grey brick chargers. Listen. We are in the modern age. You can get USB to ds adapters instead. Like the kind you use for your phone. They feel MUCH more durable than the old ones. I've gone through 4 of the old ones and I'm a bit tired of it. Plus these take up less space on the extension cord!

I highly recommend learning how to virtually access your 3ds SD card using FTPD! This makes it a lot easier to get non-3ds roms onto your system, especially with systems where you have to use a screwdriver to get to the card. It also makes it easier to make backups! You CAN access it remotely with official methods if it's a new 3ds, but honestly ftp transfer is a lot faster to me.

Join the 3ds hacking discord! I highly recommend searching any questions you have there as well as the Internet! Things are often changing, and unless it's a very popular site like the 3ds hacks guide, it's probably not going to stay up to date for long! Best to double check, and it can save you some hassle!

When in doubt, ask! Hacking communities tend to be very friendly and open to help, as evidenced by the blog I'm sending this too!

I don’t do find my friends like what if a killer gets my friends phone and uses a 3d printer to hack Face ID. Then just goes on a spree…no! And it kills my battery I feel like. I always turn it off when people do that and they add it back and act like I unfollowed them.

Disassembly Drone headcanons part 1: Make and model

WARNING: Discussion of gore, experimentation, AI-abuse, pregnancy horror and realistic predator behaviour. Please take care.

Section 1: Make and model

-To start with, Disassembly Drones (from here just DD for my sanity) were not made by a company. They had no QA period, and they had no long-term update timeline. The DD were made by a reality-warping non-omniscient creature that would have done better with purely biological creations. With access to unlimited resources of flesh, drone bodies and a 3D plastic and metal printer.

-Your basic DD or an older Solver Drone counts as a drone purely because they are still running software and not wetware. You could replace the core with a human brain and get a sufficient enough cyborg. Less the Terminator and more Andromon.

-Because their basic programming was edited by a flesh-morphing creature, Material Gathering Mode prioritizes flesh over metal. It can and will use metal, but it does better with flesh and bone.

-Due to this hack job of a build, the DDs should be buggy as all hell. However, fleshy parts are more forgiving than metal and gears. Still, the overheating started as a bug that the Solver used to motivate the DDs to hunt.

-Despite what Worker Drones on Copper 9 think, the DDs were originally made for human and war machine killing. They do equally well on blood+hearts as oil+metal.

-The DDs have semi-bionic musculature that they can somewhat train. Yes, they can have abs and other beefy features.

The parts that are purely organic in a DD/older Solver Drone are the lungs, stomach, salivary glands and various veins. The rest is an uncomfortable mix of machine and flesh.

Aside from the golden trio (J, V and N), the Solver randomized the animal brain scans for the rest of the DDs.

Depending on the animal models, different DDs have different ways of pinging. Those with more robust long-distance communication like wolves and birds can send out sentences. Those with more limited communication typically stick to two-word pings.

Their tails are as sensitive as your typical cat/dog/ferret tails, that is, not much until someone else touches them. The habit of keeping them up comes from the ever-present danger a door poses for them. Many DDs have kinked tails from having a heavy door shut on their tail and the healing nanites healing the tail in its twisted shape.

-The female-model DD legs are the result of the Solver wanting to streamline the DD production (read: it wanted to waste less time printing and putting it all together.) Two long stilts take far less time to build than ankles, feet, knees, thigs and shins.

Aside: Drone Reproduction.

Here's where the AI-abuse comes in! Basically, once drones were given sapient enough AI, there suddenly became a need to preserve and replicate that AI. While knowledge could be programmed in, there is a vast gap between pre-installed data and things learned on the job. While drones were not (relatively) expensive, losing an experienced drone was still a significant blow to production. Especially as any replacing drone would need to learn the ropes.

Thus, UNNs became a thing to preserve that hands-on knowledge. Plug your best drone to an UNN and in a few months you won't have to worry about losing them. Some even used it to 'upgrade' older models to newer ones.

Naturally, once the ability to 'breed' drones was created, it wasn't long before people began to plug two or more drones to an UNN to get the best traits into one drone. It not only became common but often expected that a working drone had a 'lineage.'

It also resulted in a lot of embarrassing arguments over ethics and inflammatory headlines.

How this applies to DDs; The Solver is sex repulsed, but it is also not a good enough programmer to undo centuries of careful programming. However, given the DDs are very fleshy, it is a coin toss if a DD can get away with a UNN or if they get to experience pregnancy horror.

LOGICO: I HATE ANTS!!!

He looks behind himself and Turquoise is gone. The ants are eating a human corpse, and Night, Smoky, and Hack Blaxton are all frantically trying to get rid of them. Logico has to step inside, but he doesn’t want to - ants! Biting ants! Everyone’s covered in red bumps! But it’s for Irratino. He has to push through! 

LOGICO: NIGHT! 

He screams as he waddles over to them.

NIGHT: Logico, help!  LOGICO: Have you seen Irratino?? NIGHT: No… I haven’t! He disappeared after he went back to find you! 

Hack Blaxton is flailing on the ground, with tiny bites taken out of his face. 

BLAXTON: I HATE BEING A MARSHMALLOW!!!

He tries to leap onto a computer, but the ants just keep following him.

LOGICO: Why are all of you even here?? NIGHT: To find Irratino! BLAXTON: I couldn’t handle being a holostage actor anymore! Now I’m HACKER Blaxton! SMOKY: I just wanted to see how they did the cool effects! Oh yeah, and I was kidnapped. Hey, wait! I can fly!

He hovers above the ground, but there are many ants already on him.

NIGHT: Dragon! Breathe fire! It’ll kill them!

Smoky takes a deep breath, and coughs up some smoke.

SMOKY: Heh. Nope! That’s for grown-up dragons! LOGICO: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY ANTS?? BLAXTON: Someone brought them in! 

Hidden amongst the lines of ants, wires are all over the floor, leading to a single hole in the wall. That has to be where MORIARTY is located. 

BLAXTON: A 3D printer! I can print some ant repellent! Or a flamethrower!! SMOKY: Yeah, flamethrower! LOGICO: My god, you’re so stupid! That’s not how that works!  SMOKY: Does anyone here EAT ants? ALL: NO!

Night jumps and flips to avoid the insects on the ground. Smoky picks up a laptop and drops it on a pile of them. Naturally, the laptop smashes, and now sparks are flying.

SMOKY: Whoops. BLAXTON: We can use that to start a fire! LOGICO/NIGHT: THAT WILL KILL US! 

Logico wishes Irratino were here. He obviously could use his psychic power to communicate with the ants or something! Suddenly, he remembers. Once, their apartment had an infestation. And Irratino told him something that might help.

LOGICO: How can you tell if an ant is the queen? SMOKY: That’s easy! Wings! LOGICO: How do you know that?? SMOKY: :) [shrug]

Logico and Night sniff the ground for an ant with wings. It might just lead them to the perpetrator of all this.

NIGHT: THERE! 

They’re ready to pounce, but Logico stops them.

LOGICO: Let’s see where it’s going.

The queen ant crawls slowly all the way to a vault. Blaxton rams into it, screaming, and knocks himself out. Logico opens the door with ease. Turquoise!

LOGICO: I KNEW YOU WERE A-

But something’s wrong. He’s emitting an unusual, even pulse, and his eyes look different. 

MORIARTY: [TECHNOLOGIST TURQUOISE] is a digital system. It has to obey its programmer’s commands.

Turquoise lifelessly slithers out of the vault. The ants are repelled by his energy. And he starts creeping toward Logico. But Gico knows what to do. Using all of his short king energy, he squeezes himself through the hole in the wall! 

NIGHT: LOGICO! What about us…  LOGICO: YOU’LL FIND A WAY!!

He shuffles through a metal pipe, following the wires - they HAVE to be connected to something. But, naturally, he reaches a trapdoor. And he falls all the way into the sewers. He lets out another wonderful scream as he is carried through a river of shit!

The end!

So, the 3D printer company is already sending a replacement power unit, but I have Discovered™ something!

The printer didn't turn on again this evening, but I remember noting that when it turned on yesterday, the place where it sits was warmer than usual due to both the outside temp and afternoon sun. So I put a space heater by it and let it run for 10 minutes. And lo and behold, it started like a champ!

So I think there's a bad connection in the unit that maybe connects properly when heat expands shit or something, I don't know. Maybe I can fix it physically, or not, also don't know that. But I'm just so glad I know how to hack-start it now! Also, hopefully the replacement power unit is better manufactured.

You hadn't meant for this to happen honestly. You were in the hackerspace in your usual spot on the couch just patching up some code in the servers on your laptop. Recently Lenni had hacked into your guys' network and left so many backdoors and holes in your servers meaning you were much more susceptible to hacks these days. If you didn't patch this now who knows who could hack you next. You typed away at the keyboard your eyes following line after line of code when Wrench called for you. You were busy, but he said it'd only be a second and that if you didn't hold a very specific wire for him while he searched for his pliers then the thing he was working on would blow up in all of your faces, literally. Josh was busy with a similar task to yours, patching up the network after Lenni got in and removing any potential backdoors she could've left. Sitara was helping Markus with the 3D printer as he got ready to leave for another physical hack across LA. So you reluctantly looked away from your laptop, leaving your unfinished vulnerable servers for just a minute too long.

Sitara shot you a smile as she noticed you walking over to Wrench and you shot her one back. It was nice that even after all these years you still had a good relationship with your older sister. Not a lot of siblings can say that they stay as close as you two have. You look up to Sitara, the way she's so bold in both her art and real life, sometimes you wish you could be like that.

But you're not.

And that thought alone used to bug you so much but Sitara reassured you that you were perfectly fine as you. She's always looked out for you since you two were kids. Being mute and more reserved, it was a lot harder to make friends or to feel useful most days. There was always something bad happening in the world and you felt terrible knowing there was often nothing you could to to help. But after joining Dedsec as 'S1lentz0' with Sitara you've found that there are tons of different people in the world just like you and they're all helpful in their own ways.

Speaking of helpful, you cautiously grabbed the wire that Wrench held. "Good now keep that steady, don't let it touch any other wires or we're all dead...mmm- probably." He ranted as he ducked underneath his workstation in search of his preferred tool. You glanced down at him every so often, cursing in your hands as your hands struggled to stay perfectly steady, though with the amount of energy drinks the whole team downs you're not entirely shocked that you can't help the involuntary motion. "Aha!" Wrench yelled, shooting up only to hit his head on the underside of the table, making the whole thing shake. Your eyes widened as sparks flew momentarily before you grabbed the device to steady it before the wire could react with anything else. "owww," Wrench groaned as he stood up straight, rubbing the back of his head, his mask showing his displeasure. You breathed out a sigh of relief at the lack of any sort of explosion before Wrench took over again, grabbing the wire from your hand delicately as he looked at you. "Your presence is appreciated my dear friend," he put on a fake British accent as he spoke, patting your cheek with the pliers twice before focusing his attention back on the device. You nodded and took that as your cue to leave. Walking back over to your laptop, you huffed down onto the couch with a sigh ready to get back to work.

The sound of beeping caught your attention and you froze, grabbing your laptop you stared at the screen with wide eyes as some stupid animation of a snake firing a gun with its tail played. It shot through your code, 1's and 0's flying everywhere as a mechanical laugh played. The snake slithered into the hole it shot and suddenly the rest of the TVs in your hackerspace were projecting the image of the snake. "What the hell is that?" Marcus questioned making everyone stop to peer at the screens. You cursed in your head as you frantically tried to stop the hack before it could get any worse.

At this point, the damage was already done though. Everyone crowded around the screens as a mechanical voice spoke. "S1lentz0 has left you vulnerable. That quiet idiot can't code to save their miserable life." It spoke, and you jumped reacting as if their words had physically hit you. You just tried to ignore their words as you started to lock them out of your system.

Sitara's jaw clenched as she stared at the screens. "Don't you talk about them like that you worthless pricks." She spat, anger evident in her voice as she crossed her arms. The voice let out the same mechanical laugh from before and Sitara only glared at the sound. "They brought down our encryptions and stole our codes to fix your vulnerable systems and thought we simply wouldn't take notice?" You'd began to sweat slightly as your fingers typed rapidly to shut them down. "Wait, so you're calling them worthless because they hacked you and took down your precious encryptions?" Marcus asked, holding back a laugh at their petty reasoning. "Snakes with cowboy hats? Who's idea was that?" Wrench spoke up, laughing much more boldly than Marcus making Josh roll his eyes at the situation. "I've heard of these guys, they're a newer hacker group called Ouroboros. Their systems are so outdated, I'm not shocked that you got your shit hacked and taken down so quickly," Sitara spoke, still glaring at the screen as she continued. "Don't be mad because my little sibling outsmarted your dumbass encryptions. The only reason you're even here is because some other hacker group weakened our system, not because you're skilled hackers." The mechanical voice tried spitting back but was washed from the screens as you finally kicked them out for good, patching up your network in the process.

With a sigh your head fell into your hands, you felt so bad that you let this happen. "welp, that was stupid," Marcus said before going back over to the printer but Sitara was looking at you. Her eyebrows were furrowed with worry as she saw you with your head in your hands, knowing exactly what you were thinking. Walking over to the couch she crouched down next to you, placing her hand on your knee as she softly called your name. "Y/n," You peeked from your hands to look at her. 'I'm sorry,' you signed, 'I didn't mean to leave us vulnerable.' you frowned, looking back towards your laptop to avoid her eye. Sitara sighed before moving to sit next to you. With a smile she bumped your shoulder and you looked at her again. "Hey, it's not your fault ok? If we're gonna blame anyone here its Lenni. She was the one to leave us vulnerable, you were just trying to fix it." 'Yeah but I got distracted.' "And that's completely ok," she placed her hand on your shoulder and you leaned into the comfort now going into a side hug with her. 'Is it really?' you signed, and she smiled "Yes! It is y/n, nobody's blaming you hun just look around." She was right, everyone had simply went back to their original tasks. It was almost as if you guys hadn't got hacked only a few minutes prior. "Those guys that hacked us are just run of this mill idiots they don't pose any real threat." She said with a playful roll of her eyes and you hesitantly smiled at her wording.

You guess she was right, you'd only hacked them a while ago to steal some parts of their firewall that you thought would be useful in your own. You often do that, stealing multiple different encryptions and putting them all together for one mega-encryption that was damn hard to hack. "Don't beat yourself up over this alright y/n? Trust me, me and Marcus are gonna get them back, right Marcus?" She smiled at the approaching male, "Damn right," Marcus said with a smirk, placing his newly made zap-gun in a holster under his hoodie.

Moving out of the hug you turned and smiled at Marcus. 'Thanks you guys,' You signed and Marcus looked at Sitara for translation, he was trying to learn more ASL for you but it's a lot harder than he thought it'd be. "You're welcome Y/n," She said, eyeing Marcus as she placed a hand on your head and Marcus nodded. You couldn't help but feel better at the interaction. Just having confirmation that they had your back in situations like these was enough to make you beam. You truly loved your team at Dedsec and you wouldn't trade it for the world.

it came up a lot when the City of Ottawa instituted the garbage restrictions, but it also comes up on the parenting subreddits a lot too. one dad was like 'here's a life hack! buy a cheap 3D printer and you can make your kids tons of cheap toys!' and most of the comments were like 'omg that's a great idea' or 'I already do that!' there was one person who said they 3D printed toys to put in goodie bags for birthday parties. literally spreading around the cheap plastic garbage without a care in the world. especially funny considering how many posts there are complaining about being given bags of shitty toys from the dollar store at birthday parties that go straight in the garbage

there was another post about someone joking about how much they spent on yogurt pouches or something like that. someone was like 'that's a lot of single-use plastic' and all the dads were in there going, 'my kid won't eat yogurt if it isn't in a pouch! they won't eat out of refillable pouches because they don't have The Character on them! also I don't like cleaning them!' there was one dad who literally said he used the pouches bc his kid made a mess eating yogurt out of a bowl. producing tons of avoidable garbage bc you can't be bothered to help your child learn to use a spoon. how did the rest of us live before they started putting applesauce in a plastic bag for us to suck on

The player character of Marcus has access to a significant number of tools when it comes to completing various missions in Watch Dogs 2, but perhaps the best of them come in the form of the RC Jumper and the Quadcopter, each of which must be created via the DedSec in-house 3D Printer. These can each be used to remotely infiltrate buildings, hack nearby objects with limited scrutiny, and with a range of movement and maneuverability that Marcus himself is not always able to perform. That in mind, upgrading each of these gadgets with the aforementioned 3D Printer takes money, and their capabilities during combat are extremely limited, leading to an interesting back and forth between Marcus infiltrating directly and using his tools to provide reconnaissance.

As first I wanted to say hello to everyone in the group, especially for Linda Sheffield Miller for creating such an amazing community circled around Blackbird - that's really stunning.

I wanted to share a story - a story of my wife who is actually too shy to talk about her love to Blackbird. Not too many of people outside of US here on the group I'd say, so it may be worth a while reading about this 🙂

Karolina (or Caroline in English) is 29 this year, we've been married for 3 years now. She is mechanical engineer that ended university of technology in 2014. From when I remember, she always had Blackbird on her wallpaper on Laptop and phone. As I'm Polish armed forces officer (we come from Poland) , the background of it was also interesting to me, so many years ago she told me a story of herself.

She is the kind of woman that never played Barbies, she was the Lego kid playing with cars, dreaming of Jaguar E-type and flying through space. When we met, she knew (and still does) know more about cars than I do.

Her dream was always to build Next gen Blackbird - anytime someone asked about her wallpaper, she said the history of it and how awesome it is (they only tried to small talk but she instantly went all in for telling about it 😅).

When she finished UoT, she worked for the company making parts for planes, but she recently changed the job to be a part of the team creating jet engines. It's her dream job right now, but still keeps saying that her future lays in Lockheed Skunk Works.

Last year we had delayed honeymoon, 34 days in United States to see as much as possible from what we only saw in movies.

We visited Kennedy Space Center (it's great for real), where she was amazed and almost cried seeing Saturn V. But the real thing was just coming.

When we arrived in the Washington, the only thing she was waiting for was going to Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum, where one of the Blackbirds stands.

You can only imagine how she reacted seeing it when we stepped on the gangway above SR-71. She cried her eyes out, but positively.

There was a guy (expert) on a big screen right next to Blackbird, who was actually connected through Skype or something, so we could talk with him and he could tell us the story of this plane. I remember them talking for some time with her making notes of what he said and she didn't know.

When we came back to Poland, with the help of my friend, I decided to make her a scale model of Blackbird. Since I like a little bit of engineering myself and I have 3D printer, I designed the exhaust fumes with Mach diamonds to be lit

When she saw it lit up, she cried again, the same as she did in US when she saw the real one. She is crazy about the Blackbird even more than she was before, but too shy to talk about it outside of her group of friends - maybe your reaction will make her open up a little more in here.

Hope the story wasn't too long - since this group exists and I watched Lindas Habubrats for some time now, I always wanted to share it. The fact this plane and community around it is so amazing that the plane itself has fans all over the world.
