Organisations not using 3D scanning must find a way to reduce project expenses. This electronic representation can be a 3D picture that enables anyone to measure and walk across the area.
Assume that one person can visit the location and collect data using a scanner. Then, additional project participants can examine the digital model to obtain the majority of the information required for a visual examination. Fewer personnel need to attend site surveys when there is a digital doppelganger at the job site. Remote surveys and inspections reduce labour and travel expenses greatly since they eliminate the need for many individuals to visit the site.

How Scan to BIM is Revolutionizing Renovation and Restoration Projects
Tumblr media
The construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to digital technologies that streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and improve project outcomes. One such innovation making waves in renovation and restoration projects is Scan to BIM (Building Information Modeling). This technology is changing how professionals approach old and damaged structures, ensuring accuracy, reducing risks, and saving time and costs. Let’s explore how Scan to BIM is revolutionizing renovation and restoration projects and why it has become a game-changer for architects, engineers, and contractors.
Understanding Scan to BIM
Scan to BIM is a process that involves capturing the physical attributes of a building using 3D laser scanning technology. The collected data, known as a point cloud, is then converted into a detailed Building Information Model (BIM). This digital representation provides accurate and comprehensive information about the building’s existing conditions, which is crucial for planning renovations and restorations.
The Scan to BIM process typically involves the following steps:
Laser Scanning – High-precision 3D laser scanners capture the existing structure’s dimensions, generating a dense point cloud.
Data Processing – The point cloud data is processed and converted into a usable format for BIM software.
BIM Modeling – The data is then used to create a detailed BIM model, which includes structural, architectural, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) components.
Analysis and Planning – The BIM model serves as the foundation for analysis, renovation planning, and design development.
By leveraging Scan to BIM, professionals gain valuable insights into a building’s current state, enabling them to make informed decisions about renovations and restorations.
The Benefits of Scan to BIM in Renovation and Restoration
1. Accurate As-Built Documentation
One of the biggest challenges in renovation and restoration projects is the lack of accurate as-built drawings. Many older buildings may not have detailed blueprints or existing documentation may be outdated. Scan to BIM eliminates these issues by providing highly accurate digital documentation, ensuring that project teams work with precise measurements and conditions.
2. Improved Project Efficiency
Traditional surveying methods can be time-consuming and prone to human errors. With Scan to BIM, laser scanning captures millions of data points in minutes, significantly reducing the time required for site surveys. The automated nature of the process minimizes manual errors, ensuring that professionals have reliable data from the start.
3. Cost Savings
Errors and rework can be costly in renovation and restoration projects. By using Scan to BIM, project teams can identify potential issues early, reducing costly surprises and minimizing delays. Additionally, the accurate data provided by Scan to BIM helps optimize material usage, preventing unnecessary expenses.
4. Enhanced Collaboration and Communication
BIM models created from scan data provide a centralized digital representation of a building, which enhances collaboration among stakeholders. Architects, engineers, and contractors can work with the same detailed model, improving communication and coordination. This reduces misunderstandings and ensures that renovation plans are aligned with the existing structure.
5. Risk Reduction and Safety Improvements
Renovation and restoration projects often involve working with deteriorated structures, which can pose safety risks. Scan to BIM allows professionals to assess the condition of the building remotely, identifying structural weaknesses before starting physical work. This helps create safer work environments and reduces the likelihood of accidents.
6. Sustainability and Adaptive Reuse
Scan to BIM plays a crucial role in sustainable renovation practices. By accurately assessing existing structures, professionals can develop strategies for adaptive reuse rather than demolition. This reduces construction waste and supports environmentally friendly building practices.
Applications of Scan to BIM in Renovation and Restoration
Historic Building Preservation
Preserving historic buildings requires a delicate balance between maintaining original architectural features and modernizing infrastructure. Scan to BIM helps conservationists and architects document intricate details, ensuring that restoration efforts align with historical accuracy while incorporating necessary upgrades.
Structural Renovations
For buildings undergoing structural modifications, Scan to BIM provides engineers with detailed insights into load-bearing elements, foundation conditions, and potential weaknesses. This information is essential for reinforcing structures while maintaining safety and integrity.
MEP System Upgrades
Renovating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in older buildings can be complex due to unknown existing conditions. Scan to BIM simplifies this process by providing accurate spatial data, allowing engineers to design efficient MEP systems without costly guesswork.
Commercial and Residential Retrofits
Whether updating office spaces, retail outlets, or residential properties, Scan to BIM ensures that renovation projects align with existing structures. This is particularly useful for integrating smart building technologies, energy-efficient systems, and modern design elements into older buildings.
The Future of Scan to BIM in Renovation
As technology continues to evolve, the future of Scan to BIM looks promising. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are expected to further enhance the efficiency of the Scan to BIM process, making it even more accessible and cost-effective. Additionally, integration with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will enable professionals to visualize renovation plans in immersive 3D environments before implementation.
Moreover, as sustainability and carbon footprint reduction become priorities in the construction industry, Scan to BIM will play a vital role in promoting adaptive reuse and minimizing construction waste.

WHY DIGITIZE CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND FOR WHOM?
Many museums around the world make high-quality 3D scans of important artwork and ancient artifacts in their collections. Several forward-thinking organizations freely share their 3D scans, allowing the public to view, copy, adapt, and experiment with the underlying works in ways that have never before been possible.
Anyone in the world with an internet connection can view, interact with, and download the British Museum’s 3D scan of the Rosetta Stone, for example. The public can freely access hundreds of scans of classical sculpture from the National Gallery of Denmark, and visitors to the Smithsonian’s website can view, navigate, and freely download thousands of high-quality scans of artifacts ranging from dinosaur fossils to the Apollo 11 space capsule.
With access to digitizations like these, artists can rework and incorporate our common cultural heritage into new works, such as films, video games, virtual reality, clothing, architecture, sculpture, and more. Researchers and educators can use 3D scans to further our understanding of the arts, and the art-loving public can use them to appreciate, study, and even replicate beloved works in new ways that are not possible within the confines of a museum or with the original works. [...]
Unfortunately, some ostensibly public-spirited organizations do keep their 3D scans hidden. I’ve been trying to help them see the light. Beginning in 2017 I spent three years using German freedom of information law to successfully pressure the Egyptian Museum of Berlin to release its 3D scan of its most prized possession and national treasure, the 3,000 year-old Bust of Nefertiti. Since then I’ve turned my attention to the digital treasures being hoarded by taxpayer funded institutions in France.
The Louvre, for example, will not allow the public to access its ultra-high quality 3D scan of Winged Victory, the Nike of Samothrace, despite its aggressive public and corporate fundraising campaign to digitize the iconic Greek sculpture. Nor its scan of Venus de Milo.
The French Ministry of Culture’s Réunion des musées nationaux (RMN) receives tens of millions of dollars anually in public subsidies to provide services to French national museums. [...] RMN advertises its scans’ availability to the public, which makes for great PR, but its ads are false. In fact, RMN has a strict look-but-don’t-touch policy for its 3D scans and absolutely refuses to allow the public to access them directly. My own investigation has revealed that, in private, RMN admits it won’t release its scans because it wants to protect its gift shops’ sales revenue from competition from the public making their own replicas. For practical applications and creative potential, and direct value to the public, it is as though these scans simply do not exist.
And then there is the Rodin Museum. Founded in 1917 shortly after the death of famed sculptor Auguste Rodin, le musée Rodin is a state-run administrative agency and an arm of the Ministry of Culture. It has a legally mandated mission to preserve, study, enhance and disseminate Rodin’s works, all of which have been in the public domain since their copyrights expired decades ago. Even though musée Rodin never passes up an opportunity to remind the public that it is France’s sole “self-funded” national museum, it sought and obtained direct public funding from the Ministry of Culture’s national digitization program, and in 2010 as part of its public service mission began 3D scanning its collection with the stated purpose of publishing the results.
Fourteen years later, musée Rodin’s scans have not been shared with the public. [keep reading]

Understanding BIM Outsourcing: Challenges, Benefits, and Strategies
Tumblr media
Building Information Modeling (BIM) outsourcing has become an essential practice in the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry in the United States. With the rapid adoption of digital workflows and increasing project complexity, firms are seeking more efficient ways to handle BIM-related tasks. Outsourcing BIM services allows firms to access specialized expertise, reduce operational costs, and improve project turnaround times. However, despite its many advantages, outsourcing also comes with certain challenges that firms must address to ensure seamless project execution.
In this detailed guide, we will explore BIM outsourcing in depth, discussing its significance, advantages, potential obstacles, and strategies to optimize the outsourcing process for maximum efficiency and success.
What is BIM Outsourcing?
BIM outsourcing refers to the practice of delegating BIM-related tasks to external service providers. These tasks can range from 3D modeling and clash detection to construction documentation, coordination, cost estimation, and visualization. Companies may choose to outsource BIM services either to domestic firms within the United States or to international providers offering cost-effective solutions.

It all started in December of 2018, with a sneak peek on social media from the author and screenwriter of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, J.K. Rowling, who, after announcing the completion of her newest screenplay, posted the following phrase on her Twitter: “Rio de Janeiro had better brace itself.”
A month earlier, Rowling had already made a mention about 1930’s Rio de Janeiro in a tweet that led to curious speculation from Brazilian fans of the franchise: what did old Rio have to do with the creator of Harry Potter?
In the following weeks, it was discovered that the author had set her newest film creation in the marvelous city of Rio. The project’s production team, following her lead, began to plan trips to Brazil in order to film certain older areas of downtown Rio and use them as backgrounds for the 3rd episode film of the film series. And Brazil Production Services was the Brazilian production company chosen to head the production unit in Brazil of this international mega-blockbuster.
When Warner Brothers contacted BPS, the job at hand involved the mapping and scanning of dozens of buildings and areas in downtown Rio de Janeiro, where several buildings from the city’s colonial, imperial, and turn-of-the-century periods are located.  This material would then be used by the film’s visual effects team to digitally reconstruct the city circa 1930 by way of computer graphics. The idea was to do something big, exploring the city’s beautiful backdrop that could transport the fans to a magical version of Rio de Janeiro of that time.
Tumblr media
However, the coronavirus arrived in Brazil in March of 2020, causing the production plan and the script to undergo dramatic changes.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, in an interview, spoke about the final version of the film that was released worldwide in April 2022: “The whole section that is set in Bhutan was meant to be set in Brazil … we were meant to travel and go and shoot there. Then COVID hit.” The actor lamented the cancellation of Rio as a main location – and so did we at BPS…
And so, what was supposed to be an intricate shoot in Rio showcasing some of its most interesting architecture turned out to be a production with only one of these locations.  This location was a quick shot at an iconic location in Rio, in which the magical community of the city celebrates the victory of Vicência, a character played by the Brazilian actress Maria Fernanda Cândido.
The location in question was none other than the big house at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, a world-renowned location with that also features Rio’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in the background.
The beautiful house was scanned by the BPS team using LIDAR technology, which, according to the company’s Executive Manager Valéria Costa, is a tool widely used for building digital environments nowadays. The technology captures and measures properties of reflected light falling upon structures and, from that data, accurately documents a building’s 3D characteristics, providing the post-production team with high quality raw material to work on for the creation of digital backgrounds.
Tumblr media
Anyone who blinks might miss the lightning-fast appearance of Rio in the final version of the film, but at least it gave a taste, however small, of Rio’s beautiful scenery.  In short, after months of doubt as to whether or not Rio would be the setting for the film, the image below was what was left of the author’s original conception in the final form of the film.
Although disappointed with the shrinking of Brazil’s participation in the project, we look back on the experience philosophically affirming that one scene is better than no scene at all, right?

Weeeeeee Wizards of the Coast opened a whole fucking can of worms. In the new Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants, Wizards hired a "freelance artist" to use algorithmic generative tools to "enhance" artwork done by actual freelance artists. A long thread about this follows the link to the news story.
Wizards of the Coast took artwork that was created by other freelance artists and used another "artist" that uses generative AI to "enhance" the artwork. This was done without the knowledge or consent of the original artists.
It should be noted that the artwork in question DID HAVE an actual artist creating it and that the "AI" only performed "enhancements" with some alterations to the art. This means the issue of copyright of art created by generative algorithms is not part of the question here.
However, the issue is this artwork was very likely submitted by the original creators to Wizards months ago, likely no earlier than this past spring before the current hype around algorithmic art kicked into high gear, around the time Wizards was denouncing the use of such tools.
These "AI" programs run off of databases made of scraped artwork, almost all of them unable to provide sources for where they got their artwork and many with founders who do not seem to understand how copyright works (ie Google Images is NOT public domain).
Further, the Terms of Service of these programs mean anything submitted into them is then added to the database to "refine" the algorithm. Again, these systems do not verify if the person submitting them has the legal rights to what they submit to give that permission. They just do it anyway.
So this artwork submitted to Wizards of the Coast before it was widespread for freelance artists to include clauses in their contracts to prevent the artwork's use in generative algorithm databases...was submitted to generative algorithm databases. Without their knowledge.
I'm going to quote what one artist said on another platform: "I feel so genuinely betrayed by WotC [...] Having concepts I worked on ran through a scraping program and turned into slop isn't really how I wanted to spend August."
Wizards of the Coast moved to work-for-hire for most artwork following some licensing issues for early Magic: The Gathering art (though I'm not sure if that applies to D&D art as well), so legally they own the artwork in question and can do what they wish with it...
HOWEVER, being legally allowed to do something does not mean it is ethical or moral to do so. Wizards of the Coast did not even NOTIFY artists they were doing this, meaning they sure as hell didn't compensate the artists appropriately for that level of additional use of their work.
This is akin to Marvel Studios doing 3D scans of background actors recently without informing those actors they were signing over rights to their likeness forever in future projects on the eve of a strike over precisely that issue.
Wizards of the Coast, in allowing an artist to use generative algorithms on the artwork - even if it was just to "enhance" it - has destroyed trust with the freelance art community. Likely dozens of artists had their work fed to the algorithm without their consent.
And to address some defenses I've seen already:
"It was just used to enhance the art, not create it!"
This means the art can be copyrighted. It arguably (and in my opinion) makes it MORE unethical than algorithmic art. If the artwork was created by algorithm, it would only use assets from existing databases. By using it to "enhance" work, it has taken the original art by actual artists and added it to the database without compensation and without their consent or even their knowledge.
"It's just like using any other tool like Photoshop filters!"
Except the original art has been added to the databases of the software companies making these generative algorithms. Photoshop's Diffuse Glow doesn't steal my art and let others make copycats of my work.
"It was work for hire meaning Wizards can do what it wants with the art!"
I addressed this one already but I want to reiterate a point many people in these debates forget:
LEGAL IS NOT THE SAME AS ETHICAL.
Just because you legally CAN do something doesn't make it right.

Mission in Early 2025
The observatory will lend insight into what happened after the big bang, measure the glow of galaxies near and far, and search the Milky way for building blocks of life.
NASA and SpaceX are targeting late February 2025 for the launch of the agency’s next astrophysics observatory, SPHEREx. Short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, SPHEREx will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
About the size of a subcompact car, SPHEREx will enter a polar orbit around Earth and create a map of the entire sky in 3D, taking images in every direction, like scanning the inside of a globe. The map will contain hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies, showing them in 102 colors (each a different wavelength of light).
Scientists will use SPHEREx’s all-sky map to achieve the mission’s three key science goals. The first is to shed light on a cosmic phenomenon called inflation, a brief but powerful cosmic event when space itself increased in size by a trillion-trillionfold less than a second after the big bang. The observatory will measure the distribution of hundreds of millions of galaxies to improve understanding of what drove inflation and of the physics behind this event.
The SPHEREx mission will also measure the collective glow from galaxies near and far, including light from hidden galaxies that haven’t been individually observed. This data will provide a more complete picture of all the objects and sources radiating in the universe.
Its third key science goal is to search the Milky Way galaxy for icy granules of water, carbon dioxide, and other essential building blocks of life. The mission will help scientists discover the location and abundance of these icy compounds in our galaxy, giving them a better sense of how likely they are to be incorporated into newly forming planets.
Launching as a secondary payload on the same Falcon 9 rocket as SPHEREx will be NASA’s PUNCH mission (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere). Led by Southwest Research Institute’s office in Boulder, Colorado, and managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, PUNCH is a constellation of four small satellites heading to low Earth orbit that will make global, 3D observations of the Sun’s corona to learn how the mass and energy there become solar wind.
NASA’s Launch Services Program, based at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center, manages the launch service for the SPHEREx and PUNCH missions.

Titanic Mission To Map Wreck In Greatest-Ever Detail
— By Jonathan Amos & Alison Francis | 12 July 2024
Tumblr media
Six-tonne robots will spend up to 20 days mapping and cataloguing the wreck site
A team of imaging experts, scientists and historians set sail for the Titanic on Friday to gather the most detailed photographic record ever made of the wreck.
The BBC had exclusive access to expedition members in the US city of Providence, Rhode Island, as they made preparations to leave port.
They'll be using state of the art technology to scan every nook and cranny of the famous liner to gain new insights into its sinking.
This is the first commercial mission to Titanic since last year's OceanGate tragedy. Five men died while trying to visit the lost ship in a novel submersible.
A joint memorial service will be held at sea in the coming days for them and the 1,500 passengers and crew who went down with Titanic in 1912.
The new expedition is being mounted by the US company that has sole salvage rights and which to date has brought up some 5,500 objects from the wreck.
But this latest visit is purely a reconnaissance mission, says RMS Titanic Inc, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Two robotic vehicles will dive to the ocean bottom to capture millions of high-resolution photographs and to make a 3D model of all the debris.
"We want to see the wreck with a clarity and precision that's never before been achieved," explained co-expedition lead David Gallo.
Tumblr media
Titanic was the largest and most luxurious passenger ship of its day
The logistics ship Dino Chouest is going to be the base for operations out in the North Atlantic.
Weather permitting, it should spend 20 days above the wreck, which lies in 3,800m (12,500ft) of water.
It will be a poignant few weeks for all involved.
One of the five who died on the OceanGate sub was Frenchman Paul-Henri ("PH") Nargeolet. He was the director of research at RMS Titanic Inc and was due to lead this expedition.
A plaque will be laid on the seabed in his honour.
"It's tough but the thing about exploration is that there's an urge and a drive to keep going. And we're doing that because of that passion PH had for continuous exploration," explained friend and historian Rory Golden, who will be "chief morale officer" on Dino Chouest.
Tumblr media
On its last visit in 2010, RMS Titanic Inc made a sonar map of the wreck site
There can be few people on Earth who don't know the story of the supposedly unsinkable Titanic and how it was holed by an iceberg, east of Canada, on the night of 15 April 1912.
There are countless books, movies and documentaries about the event.
But although the wreck site has been the target of repeated study since its discovery in 1985, there still isn't what could be described as a definitive map.
And while the bow and stern sections of the broken ship are reasonably well understood, there are extensive areas of the surrounding debris field that have received only cursory inspection.
Tumblr media
There is still much to learn about Titanic, even its famous bow
Two six-tonne remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) intend to put that right. One will be fitted with an array of ultra-high-definition optical cameras and a special lighting system; the other will carry a sensor package that includes a lidar (laser) scanner.
Together, they'll track back and forth across a 1.3km-by-0.97km section of seafloor.
Evan Kovacs, who's in charge of the imaging programme, says his camera systems should produce millimetre resolution.
"If all of the weather gods, the computer gods, the ROV gods, the camera gods - if all those gods align, we should be able to capture Titanic and the wreck site in as close to digital perfection as you can get. You would be able to quite literally count grains of sand," he told BBC News.
Tumblr media
Powerful cameras should return unprecedented detail from the deep
There's huge anticipation for what the magnetometer aboard the sensor ROV might produce. This is a first for Titanic.
The instrument will detect all the metals at the wreck site, even material that is buried out of sight in the sediment.
Tumblr media
The sensor instruments, including the magnetometer, will return fascinating new data
"It would be an absolute dream to determine what has happened with Titanic's bow below the seafloor," explained geophysics engineer Alison Proctor.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to deduce whether or not the bow was crushed when it hit the seabed, or if it might actually extend down well into the sediment intact."
The team wants to review the state of some well known objects in the debris field, such as the boilers that spilled out as the opulent steamliner broke in half.
Tumblr media
A rendering of what the electric candelabra might have looked like
There's the desire, too, to locate items thought to have been sighted on previous visits. These include an electric candelabra, which in its day would have been a fascinating curio, as well as the possibility of a second Steinway grand piano.
The musical instrument's wooden surround would have long since decayed away, but the cast iron plate, or frame, that held the strings should still be there, and perhaps even some of the keys.
"For me, it's the passengers' possessions, especially their bags, that are of greatest interest," said Tomasina Ray, who curates the collection of Titanic artefacts held by the company.
"It's their belongings - if we are able to retrieve more in the future - that help flesh out their stories. For so many passengers, they are just names on a list, and it's a way to keep them meaningful."
Tumblr media
Rory Golden says the memorial plaque for PH will be placed upright in the sediment
This will be RMS Titanic Inc's ninth visit to the wreck site. The firm has attracted controversy in recent years with its stated desire to try to bring up part of the Marconi radio equipment that transmitted the distress calls on the night of the sinking.
It won't happen on this expedition but if and when it does occur, it would mean extracting an object from inside the disintegrating ship.
For many, Titanic is the gravesite to the 1,500 who died that night in 1912 and should not be touched, its interior especially.
"We get that and understand it," said company researcher James Penca.
"We dive to Titanic to learn as much as we can from her; and like you should with any archaeological site, we do it with the utmost respect. But to leave her alone, to just let her passengers and crew be lost to history - that would be the biggest tragedy of all."
Tumblr media
It is the personal items, some preserved inside bags, that tell the stories of the dead
Tumblr media
James Penca has the famous ship's radio call sign - "MGY" in morse code - tattooed on his arm
