Tkachuk explains how Russia is continuing to prevent grain from leaving Ukraine. The July deal established a so-called “humanitarian corridor” in the Black Sea for the shipment of grain — with ships searched in Istanbul by Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, and UN inspectors. The point of inspections is, apparently, to search for “unauthorised cargoes and personnel on board vessels inbound to or outbound from the Ukrainian ports”.

From the outset, Ukraine has complained about Russian inspections of their ships: often ships are waiting “for over a month”, according to the Ukrainian Information Ministry in December. Tkachuk says this is deliberate. “The ports are working; the grain is going on to the ships; we are ready to work. But there are more than 90 grain ships waiting in line in the Bosporus. Four months ago, I was Deputy Head of the port in Chornomorsk [south of Odesa]. I know how this works. They are acting as a break to sabotage the grain deliveries.”

He continues: “The Russians are saying that there are mines in the water — but there are no mines in this corridor. Also, under the terms of the deal, they have the right to inspect a ship before it goes. And they are doing this incredibly slowly. The Turkish inspectors can inspect a ship in three hours — it takes the Russians three days for some reason.”

He is not alone in this view. A few days later, I meet with Oleksiy Goncharenko, MP for the Northwest Odesa region. “The Russians are doing the inspection slowly,” he tells me. “They need a rest, they need to smoke, then a coffee. Then they are ill, and a million other excuses to delay the process. Generally, we have three or four ships going through inspections per day, but during the two days in which Russia wasn’t in the deal, that number was 20 ships.”

Goncharenko believes this contains a vital lesson for the international community. “It was clear from the first day that Russia would do everything it could to kill the deal; it was looking for any excuse. From the beginning, the Russians never wanted it. They want chaos and inflation; they want the Black Sea to remain closed. So when we attacked their fleet in Sevastopol, they obviously jumped at the opportunity to back out. But it was interesting because it didn’t work. They made a huge song and dance about leaving; [Turkish President] Erdogan said, ‘fine then’ and they came back in just over 48 hours.” He concludes. “This is really important because it shows the world how to deal with Russia.”

Ukraine and Russia have signed a UN-backed deal to allow the export of millions of tonnes of grain from blockaded Black Sea ports, potentially averting the threat of a catastrophic global food crisis.

A signing ceremony at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul was attended by the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s president, who had played a key role during months of tense negotiations.

Guterres said in remarks after the deal would open up grain exports from Ukraine and the UN would work to ensure its success.

It is hoped the agreement will secure the passage of grain and essential goods such as sunflower oil from three Ukrainian ports including Odesa, even as the war continues to rage elsewhere in the country. The UN had warned that the war risked mass malnutrition, hunger and famine.

The deal is also aimed at ensuring the safe passage of Russian-made fertiliser products, essential for ensuring future high yields on crops, amid efforts to ease a global food crisis provoked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

UN officials said they hoped preliminary shipments could begin as soon as Saturday, with the hope of reaching prewar levels of export from the three Ukrainian ports – a rate of 5m metric tonnes of grain a month – within weeks.

According to UN officials, under the agreement struck between Kyiv and Moscow:

A coalition of Turkish, Ukrainian and UN staff will monitor the loading of grain on to vessels in Ukrainian ports before navigating a pre-planned route through the Black Sea, which remains heavily mined by Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukrainian pilot vessels will guide commercial vessels transporting the grain in order to navigate the mined areas around the coastline using a map of safe channels provided by the Ukrainian side.

The vessels will then cross the Black Sea towards Turkey’s Bosphorus strait while being closely monitored by a joint coordination centre in Istanbul, containing representatives from the UN, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey.

Ships entering Ukraine will be inspected under the supervision of the same joint coordination centre to ensure they are not carrying weapons or items that could be used to attack the Ukrainian side.

The Russian and Ukrainian sides have agreed to withhold attacks on any of the commercial vessels or ports engaged in the initiative to transport vital grain, while UN and Turkish monitors will be present in Ukrainian ports in order to demarcate areas protected by the accord.

According to Ukraine's Operational Command “South,” Russian forces attacked the Black Sea trade port in Odesa with Kalibr cruise missiles on July 23.

Two missiles were shot down by Ukraine’s air defense, while the other two hit the port's facilities, the military said.

A minor fire broke out at the port's pumping station, but there was no significant damage to port infrastructure or grain storage facilities, Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for the command said. Humeniuk also said the blast waves from the attack damaged nearby homes.

The attack came a day after Russia and Ukraine signed UN-backed agreements to resume exports of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. The deal aimed to unblock crucial grain exports and ease fears of a looming global food crisis. It envisioned safe passage of Ukrainian grain from three southwestern ports in Odesa Oblast, including the one in Odesa.

A soldier and two security guards were among those killed at an electricity substation, Andriy Raikovych said on television.

🇻🇬🇺🇸✏️Cytomegalovirus is a genus of double-stranded DNA viruses belonging to the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily of the Herpesviridae family.

✏️The type of CMV that causes infection in humans is called human herpesvirus 5 (Human herpesvirus 5, HHV-5). The name "cytomegalovirus infection" is used more frequently.

✏️ It is one of the most common neonatal infections.

✏️ Its prevalence (frequency) is between 0.2-1.2% of live births in the society.

✏️The duplication (offspring) time of CMV, which is a relatively slow replicating virus, occurs within 48-72 hours following infection.

✏️Unlike Herpes Simplex virus (HSV), CMV disrupts the working mechanism of the host cell and the rapid death of the cell.

✏️The effect of CMV on the host cell is to accelerate the cell's RNA, DNA and protein synthesis.

✏️ The probability of serious diseases due to infection is high in the 10% of newborns with signs of infection (congenital) at birth.

✏️The most common congenital infection is jaundice, liver and spleen enlargement, pinhead-sized red spots on the skin (petechiae).

✏️ It affects the brain, causing microcephaly (small head and brain), mental retardation, movement disorders, hearing and vision disorders.

✏️It progresses asymptomatic in adults, and nonspecific signs and symptoms such as fever, sore throat, lymphadenopathy (swelling of the lymph nodes), and joint pain are observed in 15%.

✅Diagnosis: A 4-fold increase in the CMV-specific IgG antibody in the blood in 2 separate measurements, or the detection of IgM antibody in a single sample, diagnoses infection. ✅Treatment: the first drug is ganciclovir, the others are valganciclovir, foscornet and cidoflovir.

✅Vaccines;

✏️The CMV vaccine 'gB/MF59' of Sanofi and Novartis companies gave 50% results in phase-2 studies and phase-3 (trial in large human populations) was stopped.

✏️The vaccine, supported by the US Moderna company, was published by Xintau Hu and his colleagues in the February 15, 2024 issue of the highly prestigious journal 'Journal of Infectious Diseases'.

✏️They announced that the vaccine called CMV mRNA-1647, which uses Covid-19 vaccine technology, has passed the phase-3 stage.

Soooo, it’s now been nearly 48 hrs since arriving in South Korea. I’ve been a bit shattered so haven’t posted. My journey through Istanbul went very smoothly, it was a massive airport - staff travelled around on three wheeled scooters it was so big! I managed to connect to the internet briefly to see what was happening to the heating at home. Maryanne had accidentally kicked over the thermostat, and it wasn’t working any more :-(. Then onto the second flight which left on time and was also a smooth, easy f slightly cramped flight!

After being fed (Turkish airlines food not bad for airplane food!), I managed to get a few hours sleep. Then breakfast and landed at Seoul. Getting through passport now problem, and only had to wait a few mins for my rucksack.

The airport was nice. I found the wifi egg place easily, and they gave me a free fridge magnet :-). I then found my way down to the station. Past some interesting looking chairs see photo! Bought my t-card (cash only) and used it to get a stopping train to Seoul. This was quicker than getting the express because the express wasn’t for another half hour or so. In Seoul I found Line 4 and only a couple of stops to Myeongdong, and a 2 minute walk to my hotel.

At the resort there is a post office, a clinic, currency exchange and tourist information bureau, souvenir stands. Chronic inflammations of the respiratory ducts, light bronchitis, laryngitis, hypertonia, atherosclerosis, diabetes and silicosis are treated in the resort.

A first-class road leads from Sofia to the resort, passing Pancharevo, several lakes, the Isker Dam and Samokov. There is a regular 40-minute bus service to Samokov.
