Today’s compilation:
Rhythm & Blues: 1967 1991 R&B / Soul / Funk
Man, an album like this should just remind you how much of an abundance there was of terrific R&B and soul joints that were floating around throughout the 60s and 70s. And back in the early-to-mid-90s, Warner and Time-Life Music teamed up to release a series of compilations that would document some of R&B and soul's greatest hits from that era, dedicating a CD's worth of tunes to each year from 1955 through 1976. And this release, as you could guess from its title, takes on the very important year of 1967.
1967 was the year that birthed, quite possibly, the single-greatest hit in the entire history of the rhythm & blues genre: "Respect," by Aretha Franklin. Not only is it just a stunning knockout punch of a song that officially launched Aretha Franklin into the stratosphere herself, but it's also a song that was sewn into the fabric of both the feminist and civil rights movements for equality. It's a song that marked a paradigmatic shift for the course of popular music, but it also played a much more important role in serving as an integral part of the soundtrack to US societal progress. It is completely indispensable.
And that's what this album dutifully kicks itself off with, followed by another enormous hit in Sam & Dave's "Soul Man," which was co-written by Isaac Hayes after he was inspired by what he saw during a riot in Detroit, in which the black-owned buildings that were labeled with "Soul" were left intact.
Almost every song on here is fantastic, but those two are especially important, because they wound up transcending the goal of just being good songs. Other tunes on here were definitely sonically superb, but they weren't nearly as politically potent, and weren't intended to be anyway.
But on here you'll find an entire grip of R&B and soul tunes that made 1967 what it was: a deluge of Motown, a stack of Stax, a handful of Atlantic (led by two Aretha Franklin hits, of course), and a smattering of successes from some much smaller labels.
Nearly all of these tunes were huge commercial smashes too, but a couple of them still remain a little bit obscure. For example, Freddie Scott's "Are You Lonely for Me" topped Billboard's R&B chart, but it barely scraped the top 40 on the publication's Hot 100. And it was only one of two songs in Scott's entire career to make the top 40 in the first place, released on producer-executive Bert Berns' small subsidiary label, Shout Records.
And another relative obscurity is the album's plaintive closer from Toussaint McCall, whose "Nothing Takes the Place of You" proved to be the most successful single of his career, reaching only #52 on the Hot 100, but #5 on the R&B chart. Released on Ronn Records, a sublabel of Shreveport's Jewel Records (a label whose compilations I have a lot of), its combination of McCall's foundational organ and piano, and his soul-reaching, resigned despondency, makes it the most unique song on this compilation, as the others tend to be far more unreservedly fiery, upbeat, and/or lovey-dovey. And it's also a staple of some of my very own soul playlists, like my 1960s one and my Louisiana one. (Note: it’s mistitled and misattributed on Spotify as “Making Nassau Fruit Punch” by African Music Machine, so if you go to follow those playlists and don’t see “Nothing Takes the Place of You” on there, that’s why 😅.)
Ultimately, this CD only has 22 songs on it that end up clocking in at an hour, but you'd probably need a multi-disc release to really capture all the R&B and soul greatness that took place in the year of 1967. This is still an excellent place to start if you're something of a novice to this excellent classic music, though.
Highlights:
Aretha Franklin - "Respect" Sam & Dave - "Soul Man" The Esquires - "Get on Up" Martha and the Vandellas - "Jimmy Mack" The Temptations - "You're My Everything" Gladys Knight & the Pips - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - "Tramp" Aretha Franklin - "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" Aaron Neville - "Tell It Like It Is" Four Tops - "Bernadette" Jackie Wilson - "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher)" The Bar-Kays - "Soul Finger" Freddie Scott - "Are You Lonely for Me" Wilson Pickett - "Funky Broadway" Arthur Conley - "Sweet Soul Music" Cannonball Adderley - "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" Linda Jones - "Hypnotized" The Supremes - "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" Peaches & Herb - "Close Your Eyes" Toussaint McCall - "Nothing Takes the Place of You"

Al Green - Call Me
Yes! This is what I'm talking about. Forget about greatest hits. Al Green has the greatest voice of all time so give me his entire discography! His voice is just so smooth and perfect! He feels like he's in perfect control but could totally lose control but only if he felt like it. And the arrangements go from funky to pastoral while feeling like they were meant to go together.
Tumblr media
Lucinda Williams - s/t
There's a secret genre. I don't know if I'm allowed to share the secrets, but here goes. Late 80s alternative country. I don't mean the sundowning efforts of 60s and 70s legends, I mean the batch of new artists that rose to prominence throughout the 80s to no applause, no attention, and only modest commercial success. Artists who avoided the studio polish of popular country music and who were in touch with what their punk and alt rock contemporaries were up to. Even if you aren't a fan of country try out this album. It might give you a new perspective.
Tumblr media
Paul Simon - s/t
Paul Simon is definitely one of my favorite musicians of all time. By my calculations this is his third best album (behind Hearts And Bones and Graceland). His first album after the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel it carries a bit of the legacy of final S&G album Bridge Over Troubled Water. The focus here is on storytelling though. Nearly every song here is a little vignette into a characters life and Simon understands the ability of art to elevate very small simple moments just by choosing to frame them in song.
Tumblr media
Beck - Odelay
Beck Hansen has worn a lot of hats throughout his career, but hip hop Donovan is somehow the sound that made him famous. If you can determine what he's fucking talking about at any point on this album then I urge you to sober up a bit. The fact that blues riffs and hip hop beats can coexist like this without making me want to use a qtip to end my hearing once and for all is honestly amazing. I can't explain why this album works, but it's so fucking fun.
Tumblr media
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One
If you turned a really cute shy boy who wants to talk to you about your current hyperfocus into an album then this is what you would get. Not a lot of shoegaze aims for the level of gentleness that Yo La Tengo can achieve. This album is really sweet.
Tumblr media
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
This is the fuck album of all time. After the success of his previous album, the legendary What's Going On, Motown gave Gaye a lot more creative control. As a result Let's Get It On features a lot of deviations from the Motown sound including a lot more funk. Also in contrast to What's Going On and it's political themes is the stark and spiritual sexuality that permeates this album. Gaye makes singing about sex into a kind of prayer, and if you think I'm being fanciful with that description Gaye literally calls on God to let people "keep gettin it on".

Alright, back from the record store!
FINALLY came across Head Hunters today, and for a reasonable price too! My jazz collection is slowly but surely coming along strong <3 Also felt like picking up Doolittle since this is the first time I've seen a vinyl of it for sale, and Defector since it's about damn time I give this whole album a listen
Out of all of them though, it was an album in the $2 bin that ended up being the greatest surprise of them all! Tropea's Short Trip to Space; a masterpiece funk album that I used to listen to a ton on youtube. I just assumed it was some rare record that went out of print after the 70's, so to find it out of the blue for two bucks made me feel like I found the holy grail at a flea market!
Please give this one a listen if you haven't yet, if not for me than at least for the astronaut frilled lizard's sake
Tumblr media
...But what if I told you there was one more record that I bought today? Here, have a look:
Tumblr media
Look at this fucking album cover. This is for a Lovin' Spoonful album, the "What a day for a daydream" 60's pop rock band! Or at least that's what I know them for
I know nothing about this record, but it would've been a crime not to pick it up just for the cover alone XD

1983
Epic year for my music .A number of releases this year that set the format for “college radio”. You got REM, violent femmes, U2, new order, X, Billy idol, tears for fears, eurythmics, talking heads
A banner year for Pop music. Thriller got released late 1982, so that was a mainstay, then in 83’ a 24 y/o New Yorker named Madonna released her self titled debut album, Lionel Richie with a record that had five top 10 hits, Billy Joel- his top record-innocent man, U2, journey
Rock ‘n’ roll was more 60s rockin than 80s synth rock. x, quiet riot, ZZ Top, David Bowie, the police, Genesis, U2, Rolling Stones, motley Crew, and Def Leppard starting the hair metal bands.
And got some hard ass punk rock with acts like Bad Brains & Suicidal Tendencies…ALL I WANTED IS A PEPSI!!!!
Still fresh 40 years later
- [ ] Violent Femmes - ROY..recall being a freshman(1988) in high school and hearing Blister in the Sun for the 1st time. One of those music memories that easily outduels Alzheimer’s Disease
- [ ] Talking heads- their seminal release Speaking In Tongues
- [ ] Madonna - self titled. This record changed pop music . You got thriller released late 82 & then madonna in summer of 83 with 4-5 sure 🔥 hits.
- [ ] REM: Murmur. Debut which may be one of my fav REM records. 80s REM>>>90s REM
- [ ] John mellencamp- uh huh!! Has 4-5 classic American songs. Jackie O is a subtle highlight
- [ ] Bowie- let’s dance. Post Berlin trio, it’s Bowie crossing to middle America with songs like Let’s Dance and Modern Love..Stevie ray vaughn and Niles Rogers on guitars
- [ ] ZZ Top - eliminator. Straight up blues Texas rock.
- [ ] U2: War - full on rock n roll masterpiece with guitar driven politically charged songs.
- [ ] U2: Under the Bloody Red Sky- introduced Red Rocks to the world outside of CO. A truly majestic place that hosted the greatest over the decades. More on red rocks during 2013 year in review
- [ ] Genesis - genesis. Departing the DnD world of prog rock I believe made them better artists. Def richer ($$$) ones. Mama, illegal alien, That’s All…HITS!
- [ ] The Police: Synchronicity (A&M). Don’t know if ever listened to it cover to cover . The 4 hits off the record are all back to back midway through the record. Murder By Numbers a great last song.
Revisits and new finds
- [ ] ESG- come away with ESG. Damn! This sounds like a 2024 Z-ster release that would get a 8.5+ on pitchfork. 80s club music (find of the year)
- [ ] Cure - Japanese Whispers. An early-ish release w a couple solid goth/synth tracks
- [ ] Liquid liquid - tremendous! Funk, punk, hip hop. Contains the “Cavern” the original white lines
- [ ] Replacements -hootennanny. Lots of noise between a few good tracks. Sounds like they just recorded everything they did and put it out in this record
- [ ] Keith Jarrett - standards Vol 1. Trio s dejenette and Peacok. Got bias here. I’m a big Keith Jarrett fan & this is one have the best trios of all time and jazz, in my opinion.
- [ ] Def leopard - pyromaniac ..gotta give it props for 3 solid rocking songs (foolin, Rock of Ages, Photograph
- [ ] Lionel Richie- can’t deny the power of his pop R&B. 5/8 songs were top 10 hits
Random and Wierd shit!!!
- [ ] Lou reed. Finding out he just explains his daily life in NYC ..in song fashion. He’s got 30+ records over 30ish years. High Quantity will even lead to a low to moderate sum of quality.
- [ ] Daniel Johnston - hi how are you. Like WTF?!?!
- [ ] Rolling Stones - undercover. One of the stones worst albums. Though I’m not a stones fan. Title track only one worth a dime
- [ ] Billy Joel- innocent man. Pop stuff is good, doo wap 50s stuff is 💩 doo doo
Didn’t get to:
- [ ] X: More Fun in the New World (Elektra)

Today’s compilation:
Stand Up and Be Counted: Soul, Funk and Jazz from a Revolutionary Era 1999 Funk / Soul / Spoken-Word Poetry / Jazz
Today's an important history lesson, folks. I went back to a late 60s/early 70s era of US black revolutionary politics and awareness with this CD that was put out by UK label Harmless in '99. It's those pre-disco days when a lot of black-made music was politically righteous, with scathing lyrical critiques of a still racially unequal status quo, and carried poignant, urgent, and inspirational messages that would help to raise the consciousness among black folks nationwide, as well as anyone else who was willing to listen and learn. It was a time of riotous and fiery tumult, and while this release doesn't seem to fully encapsulate or present all the most prominent songs and musicians that ended up providing the soundtrack for this very volatile handful of pivotal years—where's Sly Stone?—it's still a phenomenal album.
This CD comes with fixtures you'd expect on a release like this: James Brown's "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," Nina Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," and perhaps the most iconic piece of spoken-word poetry that's ever been recorded, Gil Scott-Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Basically, if you're putting together an album that's trying to reflect the American black struggle from this specific time period, it'd be prudent to include this particular trio of songs.
But where this album truly shines is with its overwhelming majority of selections that aren't so obvious; songs that contain the same hunger and zeal for equality, but aren't as well known to a general audience. For example, The Last Poets, a spoken-word poetry trio whose early 70s pining for immediate revolution on their self-titled debut album would lay the foundation for the creation, development, and emergence of hip hop music and culture. Their song, "When the Revolution Comes," actually sparked a response from Gil Scott-Heron with "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," and 22 years after its initial release, a repeated line towards the end of the song would find itself repurposed as the title of The Notorious B.I.G.'s debut single, "Party and Bullshit."
And also on here is a solo track from one of those Last Poets as well, Gylan Kain, whose 1970 song, "Loose Here," off of his debut LP, The Blue Guerrilla, was actually co-written by none other than the legend Nile Rodgers himself, earning him one of his first ever credits, long before he'd *really* break out with a pair of #1s on the disco tip in '78 and '79, with Chic's "Le Freak" and then "Good Times."
Truth be told, though, The Last Poets weren't actually as obscure as you may think that I might be making them out to be here; their debut album managed to sell over 350,000 copies, and it peaked at #29 on Billboard's 200 album chart, and #3 on R&B as well. It's just that, knowing about them was spread pretty much purely through word of mouth; there was certainly no big commercial engine that was driving their sales, and if you weren't black and didn't have your ears tuned to any of this sound, the likelihood that you'd catch wind of them was pretty low.
So, the most obscure song on this album, then, appears to be a funk tune from an anonymous group called The Pace-Setters, whose only ever release, a 1971 7-inch, sings the praises of social activist Jesse Jackson and his then-recently formed PUSH organization on its chugging a-side.
The rest of this CD's tunes are pretty much made up of brilliant funk, soul, and jazz entities—The Impressions, Billy Paul, Archie Shepp, and ex-Temptation Eddie Kendricks—but the album doesn't use any of their singles. All the choices are still terrific, however, especially Kendricks' "My People... Hold On," the slow, earthy, heartfelt, and mantric title track off of his 1972 sophomore album. Interestingly, the name of that album, though, actually chops off the "My" in "My People," suggesting that Motown imprint Tamla didn't want to potentially alienate any parts of its audience with such a transparent appeal to black pride and solidarity 🤔.
Another well-known group on this album is James Brown's former one, The Famous Flames, who are just credited as The Flames here. And as The Flames, they never released an album, but did put out a handful of singles, including this CD's title track, which lives up to the name of the group who made it (it's scorching!), and was produced by James Brown and released on his own label, People, in 1971.
And before I close out, I gotta mention Chicago jazz ensemble The Pharaohs too, because the penultimate track from their 1971 debut album, The Awakening, makes for a tremendous song, with astonishing traded leads between saxophone and guitar, and a constantly thick amount of busy backing behind it all as well. It would still be an amazing tune, even if it didn't have any kind of messaging to go along with it.
So, in sum, Stand Up and Be Counted is an incredible release. It really channels a very important few years of palpably churning American black fervor, and it includes some unforgettable all-timers too, but its real uniqueness is found in its many selections of non-singles, deep cuts, & relative obscurities. I really don't think you'll ever find another late 60s/early 70s black empowerment retrospective that's quite like this one here. A stunningly superb and authentic collection of tunes.
Highlights:
The Flames - "Stand Up and Be Counted" Gil Scott-Heron - "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" The Impressions - "Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)" Billy Paul - "East" Mike James Kirkland - "Hang On in There" James Brown - "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud, Parts 1 & 2" The Last Poets - "When the Revolution Comes" Pace-Setters - "Push on Jessie Jackson" Archie Shepp - "Blues for Brother George Jackson" Eddie Kendricks - "My People... Hold On" The Pharaohs - "Freedom Road" Kain - "Loose Here" Nina Simone - "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free"

70s Blue Eyed Soul Video Dance Party
This playlist was partly inspired by th passing of Bobby Caldwell, my 1970s NYC taxi cab rides at 5 years old memories and, as always, my deep need to get this body movin.
I think the best way to approach this list is chronologically so here goes:
1970 Tom Jones - Vehicle
What a way to start the decade and if you don't think that Tom Jones isnt the King of Blue Eyed Soul, then you're probably an Elvis fan. Well ok maybe technically he was King of 60s Blue Eyed Soul? Anyway we can all agree this gem had that killer early 70s blackspliotation soundtrack vibe that defined that era.

1970 Dusty Springfeild Spooky
Everyone knows the soulful ditty about the son of a preacher man but Dusty started the decade with this lovely cover of Classics IV's "Spooky". Maybe its my latent goth tendencies, but I adore this take. I usually don't love covers unless theyre as good or even better than the original and this one hits it hard and ohh sooo SPOOOKY!!

1976 Bee-Gees You Should Be Dancin
Moving into the heart of the 70s is this funky disco pop crossover by a group of Brits that defined an entire sub-culture with their catchy falsetto harmonies and butt shaking basslines. Yes, you should be dancing!

1977 Player - Baby Come Back
This is quite the sexy laid back tempo song it professes to be.

1978 Bobby Caldwell - What You Would Do For Love
Word on the street back in the day was that this guy was white and nobody knew it till he went on tour as they only played this song on the R&B radio stations and all the promo pics were of a black silhouette. After the initial shock wore off we all decided we liked the song enough to accept him. LOL also as the kiddos now say, "it slaps!"

1979 Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes
Between Micheal's sultry vocals and the punch of that 3 part harmony during the chorus, Im just melting into those frequencies!

1979/80 Tina Marie - Behind The Groove
Although she hit her biggest stride in the 80's there's no denying the funk-soul-blues that comes off this woman's bass and vocals. Yes, this song did officially come out in the 80s but its disco vibe is undeniably still living in the 70s and I would bet REAL MONEY it was written in 79. This was about the time when disco, R&B, and funk started to crossover into new wave territory and Tina was in the middle of it all. A great way to end the decade and this list!

Various artists - Saturday Night Fever
Do you know what your threshold for camp is? If you can make it to the end of this album then it's higher than most people's. From the absolutely iconic Bee Gees tunes to the inspired instrumentals to the absolutely unhinged disco covers of classical music this album is a mood and a half. Some of the tracks like The Trammps' Disco Inferno, KC & the Sunshine Band's Boogie Shoes, or anything by the Bee Gees are certified classics. Other aren't as well known but should be. The idea of making a disco version of Mussorgsky's Night On Bald Mountain is absolutely insane, the fact that it works is sincerely confusing to me. I love this stuff so much, it's so much more inspired and fun than you would think. Then again I'm a huge disco fan so I'm not an unbiased source. Like I said you need to be able to tolerate a lot of camp, but if you bask in random aesthetics like I do then you'll be right at home.

Pulp - Different Class
Luscious britpop with aspirations of art rock. That's what pulp brings to the table with Different Class. Jarvis Cocker manages to bring class consciousness and sexuality together and deliver with the deadpan energy of someone who is just narrating their everyday life. Different Class is just full of fantastic lines. Obviously the sort of hit Common People is just loaded with digs at bourgeois poverty tourists, Pencil Skirt has the exquisite line "But I've kissed your mother twice / And now I'm working on your dad" and I Spy has "The crowd gasp at Cocker's masterful control of the bicycle / Skillfully avoiding the dog turd outside the corner shop." Fantastic stuff, if I could write lines like that I would be famous.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - s/t
I think it's a little less fully realized and dynamic than their follow up with Neil Young, but the debut by supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash is still quite delightful. There's an angelic majesty to the way they compose harmonies from the bombastic Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to the pastoral Guinnevere. It's an essential piece of late 60s hippie folk camp.

Pearl Jam - Ten
Eddie Vedder had a voice that belonged in a hair metal band and he used it to make the mopiest music imaginable. Ten cemented the grunge sound as something beyond a miniscule punk movement pushing it into the mainstream. It also pushed the sound towards a more classic rock / hard rock sound that would become a major staple of later bands like Soundgarden, Alive In Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots. The album is moody and heavy, dealing with themes of alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, it's bleak stuff. But it put a voice to the darkest human feelings with a sincerity that definitely resonated with people.

The Police - Synchronicity
A pop rock masterpiece. Sting's anxiously urgent delivery and cryptic lyricism blend with the manic and complex percussion of Stewart Copeland. It The Police's finest album. Most people know classic stalker song Every Breath You Take but there are so many standouts from the chaotic arpeggios of the two title tracks to the psychotic breakdown that is Mother or the incredible drumming on Murder By Numbers. It's the softest of all their albums, but the most artistically concise as well.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun
The rich depth, both musical and emotional, that can be felt on this album is enough to drown in. Erykah Badu perfects the confessional song airing every emotion, every grievance, every guilty thought into an hour plus epic. As a member of the Soulquarians she also had access to an all star cast of musicians and producers including J Dilla and Questlove. The beats have subtle elements of funk with strong jazzy overtones, jazzier than her neo soul contemporaries for sure. Mama's Gun probably runs a little long at an hour and ten minutes, but the long songs are worth it. This album is the blueprint for things I like about neo soul and honestly even the albums I like better refer so heavily to it that Mama's Gun ought to be remembered as one of the greatest achievements in the genre.
