Getting to Skipton
Travel is undeniably one of the most important elements of modern life. I am not just referring to going on holiday, but to the daily need to get from one place to another. The moot point is how this is done. In Colne, where I live, the dominance of the internal combustion engine is almost complete, with constant traffic coursing its streets like a toxic blood supply. However, some determined travellers make use of the desultory train service that labours along from Preston, and wheezes hourly into  Colne station.
Forward progress is prevented by buffers at the end of the platform, which mark the end of the line. This is where my little tale begins, because until 2nd Feb. 1970 Colne station was just one stop on the way to Skipton and further afield.
The line was opened in 1848. I decided to explore the original route. I did not have much of an idea of what was involved in this. With my folding bike packed in a bag on my back in case of easy stretches, I began.
The beginning of it is obliterated by the all weather pitch of the sports centre, then the main road. On the other side of this is the original cutting, now full of trees, which goes under the original  bridge taking the road to Barrowford.
Tumblr media
The hopes I had of a relatively civilised excursion were quickly extinguished when the trees thickened, the track was submerged in unforgiving mud and I felt as if I was involved in a trek through deepest,  darkest Africa. I plodded on, skirting the deepest puddles and trying not to slip in the mud. I was sure that, before long my careful footwork would let me down and I would find myself thrown headlong into the mud.
After a while of this, the trees cleared and I realised that the Leeds-
Liverpool canal, that other monument to Victorian engineering and prosperity, was parallel to me and I could discern the entrance to the mile tunnel, where craft were moved by crew members lying on the roof and ‘walking’ their barges through upside down.
Soon, and approaching Foulridge, the rail bed crosses some fields and is guided through a cutting full of brambles. After going through the mile tunnel, the canal had to be crossed by the railway by virtue of an iron bridge (demolished in 1996) The railway carried on behind some back gardens up to a large fence which is a safety measure to separate canal from railway.
Now that I had decided to faithfully follow the route of the ghost train, I needed to get to that fence which marked the former end of the bridge. The track bed was not built upon here, as I thought it might be, but was a massive puddle. The banks on either side were an impenetrable mass of brambles and hawthorns.  The puddle was foetid with rubbish and household debris. There was no choice bit to try to wade through it. If I lost my balance and, the weight of the bike on my back would make what happened next a forgone conclusion. Only a determined lunge forward with my right foot would stop me toppling into the ghastly swamp. I did loose my balance. That foot appeared, my having wrenched it out of my shoe, that the mud had refused to relinquish. Then, having regained my balance, I was able to find my shoe, as well as a garden gate that let me escape without having to go back through the swamp.
Tumblr media
With a childish sense of triumph I made my way round to the cafe, which was a clever conversion of the old warehouse that had stood under the bridge on the other side of the canal. After cleaning my self up, a bacon butty was ample reward, and I sat outside, looking up at where the bridge had used to be, the ghost train puffing proudly across it.
Tumblr media
A warm, sunny afternoon made the stroll along the embankment, with the growling motor traffic a field or two away, a simple pleasure. Having reached Earby, the road and railway crossed, with the railway continuing through the Aire valley, while  the road scrambled up the nearby high ground and through Thornton in Craven. The railway had crossed the river Aire by a massive Iron  bridge (demolished in in 1990) I had to take a footpath across a field, which took me to Carleton, where there is a footpath across the river.
The railway embankment itself, still undamaged, continued, until being abruptly halted by the higher embankment of the Skipton by pass. I followed the farm track that goes under it, which meets Engine Shed Lane, taking me to Skipton station itself.
Breathing a sigh of relief, while giving a wink at the ghost train as it chuffed off down the line, I reflected on what I had seen and on what a comparatively simple job it would be to resurrect such a practical and scenic line.

Review
Murder Uncorked has a picturesque setting in the California wine country. Murder Uncorked has a nice steady pace from the very first page all the way to the last. Maddie Day has a unique writing style that you don't come across very often. She literally breathes life into the characters and they literally come off the pages of the book. You will find yourself magically transported to wine country and with precise details of the wine and food you will find yourself sitting in a corner booth at the Vino y Vida Wine bar watching Cece and Mooncat interacting with locals and tourists. After a quick stop at the Vino y Vida Wine bar you will stroll through downtown and spend hours perusing the shelves at the local bookstore, checking out the local talent at the art gallery, grabbing a bite at the local diner, or tasting the delectable treats at the food festival. Cece Barton has started a new chapter in her life, a new town, a new house, and a new job. She's the manager at the Vino y Vida Wine bar in California's wine country after her daughter heads off to college. Cece is a strong, independent woman surrounded by family and friends that have become family. A widower who had a very rocky marriage and really isn't sure if she's ready to open her heart and trust anyone is something she still struggles with. Trying to rebuild her life Cece unintentionally gets dragged into a murder investigation when the most hated man in town ends up dead. The detective assigned to the case zeros in on Cece as her prime suspect due to a business deal. In order to clear her name she decides to let her inner sleuth emerge in order to clear her name. As she sets off to talk to people she realizes the whole town had run-ins with the victim and there is a never ending list of suspects. As she continues to investigate she becomes the killer's next target. Connemara's Hidden Gems: Exploring Beyond the Beaten Path
Tumblr media
Embarking on a Connemara tour from Galway presents an opportunity to explore one of Ireland's most enchanting regions, a place where the landscape whispers tales of history, culture, and natural beauty. While Connemara is known for its famous landmarks, it's the hidden gems, those found off the beaten path, that truly reveal the heart and soul of this rugged, wild region.
As travelers venture beyond the well-trodden trails, they are greeted by the less frequented yet equally captivating parts of Connemara. Each turn on the winding roads brings forth landscapes that are as varied as they are stunning. The beauty of Connemara lies in its diversity – from serene lakes hidden among the hills to secluded beaches along the rugged coastline.
One such hidden gem is the lesser-known Inagh Valley. Tucked away from the main tourist routes, this valley offers a tranquility that is hard to match. The road through Inagh Valley is flanked by the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk mountains, offering awe-inspiring views and a sense of solitude that is both humbling and exhilarating. The valley, with its patchwork of fields and bogs, reflects the true unspoiled nature of Connemara.
Another off-the-beaten-path treasure is the quaint village of Roundstone. Nestled on the shores of the Atlantic, Roundstone is a haven for artists, musicians, and writers, drawn here by the village's authentic charm and stunning seascapes. A visit to Roundstone offers a glimpse into traditional Irish village life, where the pace is slow, and the locals are quick to share a story or a smile.
Further exploration leads to the Coral Strand at Carraroe, a unique beach unlike any other in Ireland. Instead of sand, the beach is covered in fragments of coral, creating a stunningly beautiful landscape that is a photographer's dream. The Coral Strand is a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, where the only sounds are the waves lapping against the shore and the call of seabirds overhead.
For those interested in history, the Marconi Wireless Station site near Clifden provides a fascinating insight into the early days of transatlantic communication. Though now in ruins, the station's history speaks of a time when Connemara was at the forefront of technological innovation.
No exploration of Connemara's hidden gems would be complete without mentioning the region's numerous lochs. Loch Na Fooey, in particular, is a gem worth visiting. Surrounded by mountains and farmlands, this secluded lake is a picture of peace and serenity, a place where one can truly connect with nature.
You may also be looking for:
Bunratty Castle, Folk Park and Quinn Abbey private tour from Galway
Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden private tour from Galway
Ross Errilly Friary, Cong Village and The Quiet Man locations private tour from Galway
A Connemara tour from Galway that ventures beyond the popular sites rewards travelers with experiences that are both intimate and authentic. It's in these lesser-known corners that Connemara's true spirit is found – in the quiet beauty of its landscapes, the warmth of its villages, and the stories etched into its land. These hidden gems invite visitors to slow down, explore at their own pace, and discover the magic that lies just off the beaten path in this stunningly diverse region of Ireland.

🚶‍♂️ I've just revisited and republished one of my most cherished walks in North Yorkshire's Nidderdale area. This circular route begins at Pateley Bridge, wends its way to the enchanting Brimham Rocks, and returns. Pateley Bridge's high street, lined with delightful independent stores, provides a calming start to the journey. 🚶‍♂️
🌳 Venturing east from the town centre, the path follows the Nidderdale Way, skirting the upper reaches of Ripley Bank. Here, a Victorian-era viewing spot offers a splendid vista across the River Nidd valley to Heyshaw Moor. The route continues eastwards, then veers south past Cragg Hall and Kiln House, home to the delightful Nidderdale Llamas. Hundreds of friendly llamas abound – a photographer's delight. The trail then meanders through exquisite woodlands alongside Fell Beck, adorned with moss-covered boulders and a lush, haphazard array of ancient trees and undergrowth. 🌳
🏞️ The trek becomes more challenging as it climbs towards the magnificent Brimham Rocks. Despite its popularity and the crowds it attracts, I find joy in witnessing families and children relishing the great outdoors. Take time to explore the awe-inspiring Brimham Rocks, a natural spectacle of balancing rock formations sculpted by erosion. The journey then heads south, combining tracks and roads towards Summerbridge, followed by a stroll along the southern bank of the River Nidd, leading to Glasshouses. 🏞️
🌉 In Glasshouses, an old mill converted into modern residences catches the eye. Crossing the river, the path rejoins the River Nidd, this time on its northern bank, as part of the Six Dales Trail. This leads back to Pateley Bridge, where the 'Pillars Past' sculpture by Joseph Hayton awaits. This artwork, consisting of three figures in a circular arrangement, symbolises the region's lead mining, agricultural, and monastic heritage. The journey concludes at a charming café by the River Nidd, perfect for a well-deserved coffee and cake. 🌉
