I have to rant about this part of A Study in Scarlet because... it seems to me that Holmes didn't just discover the hemoglobin test at the moment Stamford and Watson walked in. It seems more like he seized the first opportunity to tell ANYONE. Like he simply couldn't contain his joy and desperately needed to share it with an audience. He actually BOWS after giving Watson a demonstration.

Also... "I found it!" are the first words Watson hears from Holmes. He may as well mean "it" to be Watson. He's found IT: his audience, his best friend, his soul mate. His path in life.

This first interaction sets the pattern for their entire relationship: Holmes performing for the best and most high-value audience one could hope for while Watson gets front row tickets to the greatest show on earth. Five stars.

Every single time I reread A Study in Scarlet I am startled when halfway through it becomes deeply inaccurate america fanfiction. Like Holmes reveals the murderer and immediately the next chapter is waxing poetic about the harsh, barren landscape of the western (??) US.

One cannot truly forget the Murder Mormons, but I always put it out of my mind for long enough that the switch jumpscares me.

I began writing this post before and lost my draft when I went to check how far along “Letters from Watson” is, so here it is without preamble. Lesson learned. 😆 (It appears to be up to The Hound of the Baskervilles at the time of this post.)

During the next five chapters of A Study In Scarlet, I want everyone to remember that all of this is Jefferson Hope sitting in handcuffs, having just attempted to throw himself out of Sherlock Holmes's window, monologuing for, at the very least, over an hour (based on the audiobook).

idk maybe the "dark, cold, and brooding holmes" just doesn't sit right with me because I remember that the first introduction to holmes in the canon is him doing the victorian equivalent of running down a row of people high fiving everyone because he finished his science project

the funniest thing about the first sherlock holmes book is every time watson starts talking about sherlock for a while he stops and he's like dear reader i swear i'm normal about this man my new roommate it's only that i'm injured and if i wasn't injured i would be way more normal about him i swear please don't judge me

Maybe it is due to the german translation, but the wording (directly translated back to english in the picture) is makeing the investigation scene of "a study in scarlet" maybe a little more odd than nessecary.

His mind works in mysterious ways sometimes. tfw the inspectors who called for your aid are both too shortsighted to see the simplest clues, and you just lie down on the floor for a moment screaming internally, just to avoid becoming a supervillain.
