love the part in a scandal in bohemia where watson is like i feel so bad that i'm in front of a pretty lady's house about to trick her but it's not as bad as i'd feel if i disappointed holmes so oh well then he throws a smoke bomb or whatever and yells fire

I get a little shiver everytime someone calls The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes one of the greatest love stories in English literature because it's so true, even if you see it as romantic or platonic.
I think that's mostly what we mean when we keep asking for the queer adaptation these characters deserve. Because yeah, we're aware there already exists ones in which either of them is canonically queer and has unrequired romantic feelings for the other, and Yes we're aware there exists one in which he basically has a romance with Moriarty, but what I'm left with after finishing the whole canon is a need for the Holmes/Watson relationship to be acknowledged in its intensity, because it's neither a conventional friendship nor is it a conventional romance. It's a life bond that's gotten watered down in recent years in favor of comedy which mostly acknowledges the "bickering like an old married couple" part and neglects the actual canonical and intimate tenderness of it.

Two years ago I binge read every Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle. Before I started the only things I knew was that Holmes was the detective, Watson was the doctor who worked for him, they were colleagues who solved cases when Sherlock was too baffled on his own, then they went their separate ways until Sherlock needed help again. I wasn't prepared for both of them living at 221B Baker Street, or the fact they spent nearly the entirety of their time together even after the last clue was discovered and the culprit apprehended, or how when John would vaguely try to settle down with a wife he'd return to Sherlock at any given moment. In short, I never expected it to be a love story, and I never would have guessed those two men would move into my heart to stay. 🥰

concept: ACD or Granada Holmes and Watson made up their own cipher code or other code to exchange secret messages to one another when they don’t want anyone to know what they’re saying.
during times when the other is away, they write little messages in this code in places that they will be discovered when they see one another again.

@whatthefuckbenj I do. (This is @the-moon-loves-the-sea on my side blog :D). For you and @neverquiteeden :
A Combination of Events (3k, G, love confessions, first kiss) deals gently with the painful news of Wilde’s trial.
Then there’s @plaidadder’s glorious An Ideal Husband (22k, T, established relationship), which has more to do with the effect one of Wilde’s plays (as interpreted by Irene Adler) has on an already-in-love Holmes and Watson.
Dearly Beloved by @mistyzeo (20k, M, drunk spur-of-the-moment marriage followed by getting together) examines an alternate history where Wilde’s trial led to gay marriage being legalized!
And the unforgettable Katie Forsythe wrote Full of Grace (19k, M, deepening relationship) around Holmes’ feelings towards Wilde’s imprisonment and how Watson learns to know him better.
Readers, others I’ve missed?

The moonlight falls across the familiar features, illuminating his brow with a soft glow, but Watson sleeps restlessly, tossing and turning, pursued by demons I cannot fight for him.
When morning comes, he is tired, his eyes haunted by things I still cannot imagine - I have faced danger, but it is nothing compared to what I have heard of the trenches. Watson insists that he is perfectly fine, there is no cause for concern - perhaps he knows better than I that there is nothing I can do, but my fears do not abate so easily.
We take the winding path down to the ocean. Watson is quiet, and it is not difficult to guess what occupies him. I try to draw him from his reverie when I can, but his smile is wan; an effort to reassure me rather than truly earned, and that is hardly my objective. He pauses at the water’s edge, looking out upon the vast sea - only a channel here, but it all flows into the same ocean.
I place a cautious hand upon his bare shoulder and he flinches away as though it is painful before he realizes the source; an attempt at reassurance, if an unsuccessful one. His hand closes around mine, his grip surprisingly tight, betraying fears I had not accounted for. The waves thunder around us and I wonder if this was not a mistake.
“Every day,” Watson says, his voice rough and low, “I thought of you. Even as the bombs were going off around me, the ground shaking as though the world was ending, I thought first of you and your perilous mission and prayed to any god that would have me that you might be safe.”
I pull him into my arms and silently swear that I will never let go.

Holmes introducing Watson to strangers is like: This is my colleague Dr. Watson. Who is also my best friend and intimate companion. The man whom I trust with my very life. The best person you may know. I cannot and will not work without him.
And the stranger is like ?????? did I ask
