Novidades no Fia WEC e IMSA na GTP e Hypercar em 2025

Aston Martin

Na categoria principal do Fia WEC a Hypercar , a principal mudança será a entrada da Aston Martin em parceria com a Heart of Racing com o modelo Valkyrie LMH com motor V12 aspirado com limitação diferente do que vendido a clientes  e sistema hybrido que será o primeiro V12 desde o Lola B09\60 LMP1 que tinha motor Aston Martin, que poderá ter pilotos Brasileiros no caso Felipe Drugovich e Pipo Derani. Um dos carros vai ter o numero 007 fazendo mansão ao personagem James Bond que dirigi carros da marca nos filmes.

Cadillac

A Cadillac acabou o acordo com a Chip Ganassi e vai correr em acordo com a equipe Britânica Jota  e entrada de 2 carros.Recentemente a Jota e Cadillac anunciaram o line-up para 2025 mantendo o trio Sebastien Bourdais, Alex Lynn e Earl Bamber que correu asa 8h do Bahrein em Despedida com a Chip Ganassi Racing #2 e o trio que competiu com o Porsche privado #12 e #38 em 2024 com Jenson Button, Will Stevens e Norman Nato.

Porsche

A Porsche em acordo com a Penske  alterou a escalação do carro #5 para Michael Christenssen e Julian Andlauer que correu a temporada inteira com o Porsche da equipe Proton #99 que teve uma boa participação em SPA. A  marca Alemã avalia a possibilidade de ter Sebastien Vettel no terceiro carro nas 24h Le Mans   com entrada via IMSA com o convite pelo titulo em 2024, a marca Alemã poderá estar com pilotos do IMSA nas etapas de 8h , no caso Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, Mathieu Jaminet.

Ferrari

A Ferrari da fabrica manteve as escalações dos carros #50 e 51 para 2025,  más avaliam já fazer atualizações na 499 P para 2025.

Alpine

A Alpine provavelmente deve ter mudanças na escalação já que o Nicolas Lapierre se aposentou após as 6h de Fuji em que a carro #36 terminou em 3º  e vai assumir posto de diretor da equipe.

BMW

A marca Alemã  no momento não anunciou nenhuma escalação  na equipe em acordo com o Team WRT  ou evoluções técnicas no M Hybrid V8, pode ser que tenha o Valentino Rossi em 2025 , já que ele testou  de novatos.

Toyota

A Toyota não falou em mudanças de escalação e evolução do GR010 Hybrid até 2026 quando vem o novo carro a Hydrogênio.

Peugeot

A  Peugeot a principio  ainda continua em 2025 más já se gera duvidas  porque a marca Francesa já fez varias atualizações no 9x8 desde 2022 e tem uma curva de evolução em forma de “montanha russa” sobe e desse, provavelmente um dos fatores sendo o Bop das etapas, tanto que o grupo Stellantis já falou em até trocar a Peugeot pela Alfa Romeu no Fia WEC , más o grupo já gastou bilhões de Euros no 9 x 8 LMH.

Lamborghini

A marca Italiana acabou abandonando o campeonato do Fia WEC, pela nova regra de 2 carros por equipe de fabrica e por problemas mutuos desfez o acordo com a Iron Lynx.

Vanwall

A marca e equipe Austriaca esperava voltar ao grid em 2025 com 2 carros , mas a inscrição foi negada pela Fia e ACO.

Isotta Fraschini

A marca Italiana desfez acordo com a equipe Francesa Duqueine que deixou a Isotta Fraschini com uma dívida de 6,2 bilhões de Euros o que até fez que depois das 6 horas de São Paulo desistisse da temporada de 2024 para tentar estar no campeonato em 2025, até por causa da regra 2 dois carros por equipe de fabrica, que á possibilidade de retorno com equipes diferentes más era pequena.

Uma das mudanças será a aplicação de um sistema eletrônico em painéis de led de classificação nos carros.

Equipes Clientes

Ferrari

AF Corse , a equipe cliente da terceira 499 P , vai continuar em 2025 no grid , que venceu as 6h de Austin , com mudanças de pilotos o Robert Shartzmann vai correr na Indycar com a equipe Prema Racing sendo substituído pelo Phil Hansson, esperava-se que Pipo Derani podesse correr nessa Ferrari.

Porsche

A única equipe por enquanto confirmada como cliente da Porsche será a Proton , esperava-se que pudesse até assumir um dos chassis que eram da Jota , e ter dois carros no grid.

A equipe Rodin Motorsport que compete varias categorias está interessada em entrar no Fia WEC, e pode ser um dos Porsche 963 que era da Jota , más não foi nada concretizado.

IMSA

Cadillac

 Como já mencionado acima  a marca da GM terminou o acordo com a Chip Ganassi Racing e a Wayne Taylor Andretti trocando a Acura e voltando a correr da Cadillac em 2025.

E a Whelen Engering também correndo de Cadillac.

Acura

A Mayer Shank Racing volta após 1 ano fora no IMSA na GTP assumindo os carros da Acura em 2025 , no 60 , mantendo dois pilotos do titulo das 24h Daytona do ano passado e no segundo carro #93  , Nick Yellolly (que era piloto da BMW) e Range Van Der Zande( que era piloto da Cadillac).

Aston Martin

A novidade é o primeiro carro do regulamento Hypercar e não LMDH que era o que só tinha acontecido desde a convergência IMSA x ACO  x Fia sair oficialmente do papel em 2023, O Valkyrie LMH vai correr no IMSA em 2025 em acordo com a Heart of Racing, será o primeiro protótipo no IMSA com motor V12 , que até 2017 até o Vantage V12 GT3.  A marca em acordo com a equipe Americana anunciou que os pilotos da que corriam na GTD Pró, irião subir e correr na GTP.  Apesar de ter testado em Daytona  o Valkirie LMH não estreara mundialmente oficialmente em janeiro  a marca Britânica vai estrear o carro no Fia WEC nos 1812 KM do Qatar no final de fevereiro.

Ferrari

Inicialmente a Ferrari não iria estar nas 24h Daytona e na temporada completa ou de endurance ainda em 2025

Más houve boatos após 6h de Fuji do Fia WEC que a Ferrari 499 P cliente da AF Corse na cor amarela que ganhou as 6h de Austin pode estar nas 24h Daytona de 2025 , sendo o segundo carro do regulamento Hypercar podendo estar no IMSA.

Lamborghini

A Lamborghini anunciou continuidade no IMSA nas etapas de endurance ,que até tinha possibilidade de estar na temporada integral , más com a nova regra de 2 carros por fabricante no Fia WEC ,por questões financeiras isso não vai ser possível, no entanto a marca Italiana desfez o acordo com a Iron Lynx no Fia WEC e no IMSA e por conta de ficar “de mãos atadas” sem uma equipe para operar os SC63 e Huracan GT3 evo 2 nos dois campeonatos, mas permanece no IMSA ,podendo ter dois carros em 2025.

BMW

A BMW  em parceria  com o Team RLL  com o BMW M Hybrid que teve vários problemas tendo uma dobradinha nas 6h de Indianapolis  sendo fora isso o melhor resultado um 4º lugar com o #25 nas 12h de Sebring, que até pode ter o Pipo Derani como piloto ja que abriu uma vaga.

Mustang Simpling Racing\Proton Competition           

A equipe Proton Competition que fez um acordo com a Mustang Simpling Racing , que em 2023 fez um hiato e não participou da temporada do IMSA, equipe que tem o Christian Fittipaldi como estrategista , em 2025 só vai fazer as etapas de endurance , até teve especulações que a equipe teria mais um chassis do 963 que era da Jota no Fia WEC sendo repassado a equipe Alemã.

JDC Miller Motorsports

A JDC Miller será a unica equipe privada na temporada completa ja que a Proton vai correr somente as etapas de endurance , a equipe conquistou podium nas 6h de Indianapolis , o primeiro desde 2022

Asia Le Mans Series

“They are people I know and they contacted me after we did that tweet,” said Glickenhaus.

“I’m not saying that we have a deal, though it is agreed in principle, or even if the ACO will accept another car from us, but we are working hard on this.

“I think we have a chance of putting it together. We don’t have three cars at the moment, but we can make it happen it by working 24/7 for three months.”

The team has until 3pm CET on Wednesday March 9 to complete the entry procedure.

Glickenhaus explained that the car would be run by the Glickenhaus Racing set-up made up of personnel from Podium Advanced Technologies and Joest Racing that will run his full-season WEC entry and a second entry for Le Mans.

The entity Glickenhaus is working with, he said, would bring its own drivers.

He would not reveal the identity of the operation, only that it is “already a competitor” in top-level sportscar racing and “a serious team”.

Glickenhaus is already working with a customer on its LMH programme: one of its two existing LMHs is owned by a private collector.

The American-flagged team has yet confirm its line-up for Le Mans, though it looks certain to be made up of the same six drivers who raced the two 007 LMHs at the sportscar classic last year.

Glickenhaus Racing will begin the season at the Sebring 1000 Miles on 18 March with its solo car driven by Romain Dumas, Olivier Pla and Ryan Briscoe.

Pipo Derani, who will be racing for the Action Express Cadillac squad in the Sebring 12 Hours IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round the day after the WEC opener, will join Dumas and Pla for Spa at the beginning of May and, most likely, subsequent rounds.

Briscoe would likely move over to the second car for Le Mans alongside Richard Westbrook and Franck Mailleux.

A third Glickenhaus on the grid would bring the entry for the Hypercar class at Le Mans to six cars in the absence of Peugeot, which has opted not to race its new 9X8 LMH in the enduro this year.

The additional Glickenhaus would join its existing two cars, the pair of Toyota GR010 Hybrids and the Alpine A480 grandfathered LMP1.

WEC drops three tracks and adds Imola Interlagos COTA and Losail for 2024 | World Endurance Championship

Sebring, Monza and Algarve have lost their places on the World Endurance Championship calendar as the series expands to eight races for 2024. The Sebring season-opener has been replaced by a new race at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. The race will run to a distance of 1,812 kilometres in honour of the country’s National Day. It is expected to last almost 10 hours, making it one of the longest events on the schedule after the Le Mans 24 Hours. Italy’s round of the championship will move from Monza to Imola, and from July to April, becoming the second race of the season. It will be followed by two regular fixtures, the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and the centrepiece 24-hour race at the Circuit de la Sarthe. One month after Le Mans the teams will head to Brazil for the series’ first race at Interlagos in Sao Paulo since 2014. America’s round of the world championship will take place in September instead of March, and will be held at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. Following the usual trip to Japan for the Six Hours of Fuji later in September, Bahrain will reprise its role as the location of the season finale. It has held the spot almost continuously since 2015, and will ensure next year’s WEC calendar is bookended by rounds in the Middle East. Big congratulations to TOYOTA team winning the Le Mans 24H race for the first time!! They’ve had five runner-up races in the past including the heart braking loss of win in 2016. So I believe they had all the rights to be supported by fans all over the world. I think many people thought there was no competition for them, but that’s not true. They had rivals being privateers this time, teaming up with chassis manufacturers and engine tuners with very strong driver lineup with ACO trying to give all the teams of a chance to win the race. The preparation for this race was done the most by TOYOTA and that’s why they were able to fight with almost no errors throughout the whole weekend. But having the #7 slowing down briefly shows that it still wasn’t perfect. That must be showing how demanding Le Mans 24H race is. One more thing i have to mention is about Fernando Alonso. Man! He’s a great driver!! I mean all sorts of data shows how well he performed compared to his team mates. I want him to not only try for the “Triple Crown“ with the INDY 500 but also WRC, Dakar, MOTO GP so we can all enjoy his talent in any kind of motor racing!! I hope one day I get to race there but before that one of my wishes is going to come true soon... I will be racing in Spa 25H next month with the team that challenged Sepang 12H a couple of years ago!! I need to practice a lot!!!

Slowing LMP2s further could create more problems, say WEC drivers

The new breed of Le Mans Hypercar machines that will debut at Spa this weekend are expected to be five seconds slower than the LMP1 cars they replace, as they are not only down on power but also significantly heavier.

To ensure Hypercars are still faster than LMP2 cars, LMP2 cars have had a 40bhp power reduction before the WEC announced a further 25bhp reduction earlier this month. The minimum weight of the car has been increased by 20kg to 950kg, while all LMP2 teams are now mandated to complete the entire season running the low-downforce, Le Mans 24 Hours package.

However, these changes appeared to be insufficient to create a gap between the two classes in this week’s Prologue test at Spa, with LMP2 cars locking out the top three spots in the combined timesheets. The fastest Hypercar, Sebastien Buemi’s Toyota GR010 Hybrid, was half a second down on LMP2 pace-setter Nyck de Vries in an Aurus-badged ORECA 07-Gibson entered by G-Drive.

Following the test, Toyota called for a “review” of the balance between the two categories, while conceding the characteristics of the Spa circuit could make it an “outlier” in terms of the impact of the introduction of low-downforce aero in LMP2.

However, LMP2 regulars Filipe Albuquerque and Anthony Davidson believe further reductions in performance would not be feasible without causing problems, in particular for less experienced amateur drivers at other downforce-dependent circuits.

Speaking to Autosport, 2019/20 class champion Albuquerque said: “As an LMP2 driver, we don’t want to be slowed down more.

“Already the car feels really bad, especially on long runs. It’s frustrating and it’s almost impossible to work on the car, because when the car is out of the window on downforce, there’s very little you can do about set-up.

“And then when we go to Bahrain with the Le Mans aero kit, with super-high temperatures… I don’t know see how we can drive there like that.

“At Spa with 20-25 degrees track temperature, it’s already slippery, so when we get to Bahrain it’s gonna be crazy slippery. And this is from a professional driver’s point of view, not even a gentleman driver.”

United Autosports driver Albuquerque suggested that the WEC and ACO should “focus now on making the Hypercar faster” by reducing the weight Hypercars carry that hamper their performance in Spa’s twisty middle sector.

“Their car is too heavy, just allow them to go lighter,” he said.

“The Alpine… they changed to an LMP1 and they are slower than they were last year with an LMP2!

“The ACO just needs to listen to drivers, teams and engineers from both sides, because we don’t want to fight the Toyotas. LMP2 is already very competitive.”

The two-day Prologue test saw several crashes in LMP2 and GTE classes, which Jota driver Davidson believes were a direct consequence of LMP2 cars being slower on the straights than in previous years, forcing drivers to pass GTE cars in high-speed corners.

“I think it’s why you are seeing more crashes, because the LMP2s know they have to get the move down and exploit their speed in the high-speed stuff, because it’s much harder now to just power pass them in a straight line like we used to,” he told Autosport.

“We’ve seen a lot of incidents this week because drivers are trying to adjust to the new closing speeds, and everyone’s a bit out of kilter – coming back to a circuit they know well, but the overtaking moves and the planning of those moves is now different to what they used to be.”

Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines - 17th March 2021

Pre-season testing ahead of the new season has finished, and left us none the wiser, as to who could be on top next weekend. Red Bull looked bulletproof, whereas Mercedes were struck with issues on the technical and driveability side. That being said we should not count them out, they have struggled in testing before. Elsewhere, McLaren and Alpha Tauri look menacing for 2021, and the new partnership at Aston Martin has got off to a rocky start. I for one cannot wait to see what happens when the season starts in Bahrain.

In much sadder news, the infamous Motorsport commentator, and voice of F1, Murray Walker has died at the age of 97. He was able to make so many huge moments in the sport, just that much more special. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he was loved by everyone he worked with. He was involved in F1 until very recently, despite retiring from full time commentary in 2001, he just couldn’t stay away from it. Despite the sadness of his passing, we should be glad of what he was able to do for Motor Racing, and we should try to keep his legacy going on into the future.

Williams have said, that they have built this years car to ‘yo-yo’, meaning they have focused on a certain set of tracks, and tried to make it as good as possible on those, with the hope of achieving the odd point or two. In some ways it makes sense, as their best chance of points is to be good on some tracks, as opposed to average everywhere. However, it does leave them open to a tough year, if it does not work out for them.

The sport’s CEO, Jamie Reigle, has said that the plans for Ford and GM to switch to EV’s in the future, could open up opportunities for them to join the sport. GM is already partially linked with electric racing, with Chip Ganassi’s involvement in the Extreme E series, so it could be possible, however I see a full factory team effort as being unlikely, for either of the two companies.

The Dutch city of Eindhoven has sent a letter to Formula E, expressing an interest in hosting an ePrix in the future. This could help to boost the European market for the sport, especially in Holland, where two of the current FE drivers are from.

MotoGP

Talks are growing between Dovizioso and Aprilia, for a potential future ride, the team showed well in pre-season testing, when you consider how they have done in previous years. Although we must bear in mind that they may have been trying to look good, to attract sponsors, or even Andrea himself. The move could be entirely possible, especially if Aprilia do show some improvements for this year.

Rossi is really enjoying the atmosphere in his new team, perhaps the more relaxed feel of the non-factory squad, is allowing him to feel more comfortable. Whereas for KTM, Binder seems to be trying to downplay any potential issues which there may be. The bikes did not show any pace over testing, yet Binder believes they can be fighting near the front again this year. As one of only two teams able to develop their bike, there is an expectation of improvements to be made, any sort of stagnation or worse, would not look good.

Other News

Alpine has released photos of their LMP1 challenger, which it will be running against the new Hypercars. The car itself has been brought from Rebellion, after they left last year, but will be developed throughout the year, even though it is the outdated regulations. The team is used to endurance racing, having run many years in LMP2 recently.

Corvette will run in the Spa round of the WEC, as well as the historic race at Le Mans, this will be a relief for the organisers, with a quickly diminishing GTE Pro field on their hands. It will be intriguing to see how the ACO plans to solve this crisis, to keep all of the WEC classes filled.

After a lengthy partnership, of 23 years, Loeb and his co-driver Elena have split, which will bring to an end a very fruitful run for them, including 9 World Rally titles.
