Can I Change Trains Between Stations Using A General Ticket?
Can I Change Trains Between Stations Using A General Ticket?
Even though millions of people travel by train, there are many Indian railway rules which passengers are unfamiliar with. At Railmitra, it is our constant endeavor to bring forth information that would help solve your travel worries.
Break journey and through journey tickets can save a valuable amount of fare if your journey involves stopovers or changes en-route. Such tickets cannot be booked online, and are subject to specific terms and conditions; however, you will have to go to a reservation office.
Why Book A Through Ticket Or Break-journey Ticket?
Let's look at how a through ticket can help a passenger to change the Train Between Stations.
Assume that you have to travel between Chennai and Karwar. There is no direct train and train connections are:
(a) Chennai-Mangalore Express (#12685) leaves Chennai at 5 pm, reach Mangalore the next morning at 8.30 am (889 km)
(b) Yesvantpur-Karwar Express (#16523) leaves Mangalore at 9 am, reach Karwar at 2 pm (354 km)
Let's also assume to travel in Second AC Sleeper (2A).
If you buy separate tickets for each train, you would pay:
INR 1,510 for the Chennai - Mangalore ticket
INR 750 for the Mangalore - Karwar ticket
Total is INR 2,260 for the Chennai-Karwar journey, which is expensive for a 1,243 km journey. Â
For example, a 100 km journey by Second AC Sleeper costs INR 665 (INR 6.5 per km), and a 3,000 km journey in the same class costs INR 3,065 (INR 1.02 per km). By accessing Train Route Information of Chennai – Karwar, the journey is a reasonably long followed by a short journey, making it expensive.
Now, It's possible to buy a through ticket for the entire journey. This means you can pay the fare from Chennai to Karwar, with your ticket mentioning that there is a change in the Train Between Stations at Mangalore. The total distance is 1,243 km and the Second AC fare for this is INR 1,845. With a through ticket, you save INR 415 i.e saving 18% over buying two separate tickets.
Recommendation: Why Should Check Time Table Of Train?

Break-journey tickets
If a journey ticket is for a long distance, the Indian railways allow you to "break journey" enroute that is, stop at an enroute station i.e Train Between Stations.
These tickets can only be booked at a counter, not online.
It can be issued for routes where no direct train exists as well as routes where direct services exist like Rajdhani
Choosing an excessively circuitous route is prohibited. The rule says your route cannot be more than 15% longer than a reasonably direct route. Â
Booking a through ticket on trains like the Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Garib Rath, Duronto and Jan Shatabdi Expresses is not permissible.
It is possible to book a through ticket for a journey in different classes on different trains of the journey, but you will have to pay the fare for the higher class for the entire route.
What Are The Rules Governing Through Tickets? Â
Here are Indian Railways rules for break journey tickets you should know before planning your travel:
They cannot be issued for trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Jan Shatabdi Expresses, which have separate all-inclusive fare structures on a point-to-point basis.
Travel for more than 500 km is necessary to be eligible for a break of journey,
The journey cannot break at a station less than 500 km from your origin. It’s very important to check the Train Route Information of your desired train.
If the ticket is booked for a distance more than 500 km but less than 1,000 km, the break journey is permitted once;
By checking Train Route Information, if the journey exceeds 1,000 km, the passenger is allowed to break the journey twice,
It's important to indicate that you want to break journey en-route at the time of booking your ticket
You need to get your ticket endorsed by the station manager/ticket collector at the station at which you break your journey. If you fail to so and you will be regarded as a ticketless passenger and charged accordingly,
Break journey is possible for a maximum of two days excluding the day you board and leave the break journey station,
A halt of fewer than 24 hours at a station to catch a connecting train is not regarded as a break of journey.
How Do You Book A Through Ticket? Â
The same procedure is followed to book a train ticket at a reservation office, with a few changes when filling up your reservation form:
In the yellow box:
a. Enter the train number of the first train you want to take. Â
b. Fill the date of the journey, the class and the number of seats or berths you want.
In the "from" box: Enter the name of the station of origin or the code.
In the "to" box: Write the final destination station name or code.
In the "boarding at" box: Again, Write the name of your origin station name.
In the "reservation upto" box: Enter the destination station name by your first train. For example, enter "Mangalore".
Fill in the passenger details column as usual. Â
In the "Onward/Return Journey Details" box: Fill in the details of your second train.
In the "station from" and "station to" columns: Enter the stations between which you're traveling in your second train like "Mangalore" and "Karwar". Â
You can also leave this field blank, which gives you an open ticket for the second trains, allowing you to travel by Second AC Sleeper on any Train Between Stations, subject to availability of seats.
Submit this form to the clerk, informing him/her about the request for a through ticket. Â

top 5, bottom 5

Rules: Â Tag the person who tagged you, always post the rules, answer the questions, and add the date!
What are your five most popular works? (starting with the most kudos)
1. The Horse and his Doctor, BBC Sherlock, T, Sherlock/John, 129k words
Invalided after a run in with a poacher in Siberia, veterinary surgeon John Watson finds it difficult to acclimatise to the mundanity of London life. Things change when a friend invites him along to a local animal shelter and he meets their latest acquisition, a trouble-making Frisian with the strangest eyes and even stranger quirks John has ever encountered in a horse.
Horselock and VetJohn. It started out as a cracky idea and turned into a case-fic with an unusual friendship. I had lots of fun writing this, and am still blown away by the reception it got.
2. Enigma, BBC Sherlock, M, Sherlock/John, 194k, WIP
It’s the autumn of 1941, war is raging in Europe, German U-boats are raiding Allied convoys in the Atlantic, the Luftwaffe is bombing English cities, and the cryptographers at Bletchley Park are working feverishly to decode their enemies' encrypted communications. One should consider this challenge and distraction enough for capricious codebreaker Sherlock Holmes. But the true enigmas are yet waiting to be deciphered: an unbreakable code, a strange murder, and the appearance of Surgeon Captain John H. Watson of the Royal Navy.
My most ambitious fic so far because of the historical setting and because it features real life figures such as Alan Turing. I’m learning a lot about wartime Britain while working on this story.
3. The Summer Boy, BBC Sherlock, T, Sherlock/John, 94k
About half a year after the fateful events at Appledore, Sherlock and John embark on a private case in Sussex. For Sherlock, it’s a journey into his past, bringing up memories both happy and sad that he has locked away for almost thirty years. For John, it means coming to terms with the present – and a potential future with Sherlock.
Set mostly on the South Downs in Sussex, this story is an homage to Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching books and is partly set during Sherlock’s childhood. He has no strange sister in this verse.
4. Over Earth and Under Earth, BBC Sherlock, M, Sherlock/John, 196k
Three months after finally acknowledging their mutual feelings, John and Sherlock are not much closer to sorting out their relationship, hindered by cases, work, family issues, everyday matters and by being themselves. Will a strange case out in the Suffolk countryside bring a solution or further complicate things?
The fifth installment in my Over/Under series, this fic deals with the developing relationship of the two. Since the series was begun before S3 aired, Sherlock’s return after the Fall and his family background are different from canon. This fic contains the only sexy-times I’ve written so far ;).
5. Over Hill and Under Hill, BBC Sherlock, T, Sherlock/John, 75k
John and Sherlock travel to France to tackle the Col du Galibier (of Tour de France fame) by bicycle, and the confused state of their relationship after Sherlock's return from the dead at the same time. A long journey, and a long climb ...
The one where they go cycling, and my first long(ish) fic in the Sherlock fandom. Fourth in my Over/Under series, but written before all the others.
What are your five least popular works?
1. The Passage, BBC Sherlock, T, Sherlock & John, 12k, (WIP)
The personal Journal of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, recording his journey from Portsmouth, England to Mangalore, India, aboard HMS Charybdis under the command of Capt. G. Lestrade, commencing in the spring of the year 1803.
My very first foray into Sherlock fic, still unfinished, mostly because of the amount of research required to get the historical facts right. I still hope to finish it one day, but at the moment other stories have precedence.
2. Underground Rescue, BBC Sherlock, M, Sherlock/John, 24k, WIP
All kinds of danger lurk in the disused stations of the London Underground. When Sherlock goes missing, John has to play detective to find him, while Sherlock faces demons both present and past.
My most recent fic, and the sequel to The Summer Boy. It blends my love for Sherlock with that for London and its less well-known locations.
3. Fortunately the Milk, BBC Sherlock / Neil Gaiman fandom, G, Sherlock & John, 8k
Sherlock sets out to buy milk. It turns out to be a real adventure.
My crackiest fic to date, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately the Milk, written on a whim after attending an event where he read from his book.
4. Over Ground and Under Ground, BBC Sherlock, T, Sherlock & John / Sherlock & London, 5k
After nine months of dismantling Jim Moriarty's criminal empire, Sherlock finally takes the Eurostar to return to his first great love: London. The train can't seem to move fast enough ...
The second story in the Over/Under series: a brief character study of Sherlock returning to London after the Fall (not S3 compliant).
5. Over Cloud and Under Cloud, BBC Sherlock / Cabin Pressure, T, Sherlock & John, 16k
After his Fall, Sherlock travels the world to destroy what remains of James Moriarty's criminal empire. When things don't go according to plan and he finds himself in desperate need of a discreet means of travel, cue MJN Air ...
First in the Over/Under series, crossover with Cabin Pressure. Not quite as cracky as it may sound, although I had great fun writing it, particularly Arthur’s parts.
