▪️US TO FUND GAZA PEACEKEEPING FORCE?  (Politico) Biden administration officials are in preliminary “conversations” about options for stabilizing post-war Gaza, including a proposal for the Pentagon to help fund either a multinational force or a Palestinian peacekeeping team.

I had a FB memory this morning from 14 years ago when I was nominated by my boss to go to the MDA Lock Up Charity jail and call people for donations.  I know everybody in town so everybody passes it off to me.  One I called was really old and cantankerous neighbor I grew up down the street from.  We had to read a scripted intro that started with “Hi this is blah blah and I’m in MDA jail and need a donation from my release so I was hoping you could help today.  Well it was so funny I’m a grown man, father, and husband, and this one old fucker I called laid it all out what he thought of me..... on speaker phone.... in front of all the charity people and other nominees.  He went ape shit and yells into the phone “oh nooo buddy I’m not giving you a god damn dime you worthless little shit!  I always knew you’d never amount to nothing out fucking those slutty harlots hooked on pot and rousting around with dope heads!  The only thing you ever cared about was pussy and dope and another thing YOU have a lotta nerve calling me after you tried gettin into my daughter’s pants and get her hooked on gawd knows what!!!  I hope you rot in there or they give ya the god damn electric chair!  Your parents are good people, but you are nothing more than trash....... TRASH I SAID.... GOOD BYE”!!!!!!!  And then he slammed the phone down.  Then jail room was deathly quiet, the charity staff was standing with their mouths gaped open until one young girl said “So I take he doesn’t like you very much and isn’t donating huh”?  LOL!!!!

I still raised $600 and no I NEVER touched his daughter.... HONEST!

DENNIS DAY

May 21, 1916

Dennis Day was born Owen Patrick Eugene McNulty in New York City. He is best known for his professional relationship with Jack Benny, who he first teamed with on radio in 1939, and continued performing with until Benny’s death in 1974. His “Gee, Mr. Benny!” became a well-known catchphrase. He was an Irish tenor, who never performed professionally until Benny gave him his big break at the age of 21. From 1948 until his passing he was married to Peggy Almquist who bore him ten children. 

He had his own radio show "A Day in the Life of Dennis Day" from 1946 to 1952 with Bea Benadaret in the cast. “I Love Lucy” viewers will remember her as Miss Lewis, Lucy Ricardo’s spinster neighbor. There was an attempt to move the sitcom to television, but the 1949 pilot episode was never picked up for series and the show remained on radio. He was simultaneously appearing on “The Jack Benny Program.”

BENNY: "Dennis, why do you have two horns on your bicycle?" DAY: "Why shouldn't I? I've got two shows!"

On the “The Jack Benny Program” (1951-65), his character's mother was a tyrant who intimidated Jack. Her name was Lucrezia Day and she was played by Verna Felton. His mother’s real name was Mary Grady. “I Love Lucy” viewers will remember that Felton played Lucy’s domineering maid, Mrs. Porter. 

Felton also played Day’s TV mother on “The Dennis Day Show” (aka “The RCA Victor Show”; 1952-54). On that show, Day portrayed a bachelor who lives in a Hollywood apartment priced above his income level with hopes of succeeding in show business. In 1953, it was programmed opposite “I Love Lucy” on NBC. Hal March was seen on both series. Other “I Love Lucy” faces on the series included Ida Moore, George O’Hanlon, Hy Averback (who both played Charlie Appleby), Byron Foulger, and Parley Baer.  Day even prevailed upon his sister-in-law actress Ann Blythe, and Jack Benny himself to make an appearance but the show still struggled for viewers. 

Dennis Day Is Called Brave to Buck ‘Lucy’ Show

HOLLYWOOD, Apr. 7 (AP) — Nominated for the bravest man in TV: Dennis Day. “I wouldn’t say I was the bravest,” says Dennis. “Maybe the unluckiest.”  The Dennis Day Show is on at the same time on Monday night as “I Love Lucy.” 

This took real nerve, since “Lucy” has drawn the biggest audience in TV for the past two years. “Believe me, it wasn’t my idea to go opposite Lucy. I wanted to do my show on film. My sponsor, RCA, didn’t want me to. The only way I could get permission was to agree to take the spot opposite Lucy. So I did it. I took a chance and I failed. I think it was a mistake putting such a similar show opposite Lucy. We both have situation comedy. We had good mail from people who said they had switched over to watch us. Once they made the change, they seemed to like our show. But watching Lucy is too great a habit for the majority of viewers. We just couldn't fight it. In Canada, where I don’t have to face Lucy, ours is the No. 1 show.” 

In 1967, Day appeared on “The Lucy Show” in “Little Old Lucy” (TLS S6;E7) in which he plays an amorous 90 year-old bank president named Cornelius Hetherington Jr. This was quite a departure for Day, who was perennially the boy singer on Benny’s shows, despite his age. 

BENNY (in 1965): “That crazy kid drives me nuts!”

This is one of the rare times Day plays a character that is not connected to Jack Benny, although Lucille Ball certainly featured Benny on many of her shows. In fact, the previous episode “Lucy Gets Jack Benny’s Account” (TLS S6;E6) Benny mentions Day by name as Lucy admires photos of his radio and television show on his wall.  Did Day come as a ‘package deal’ for Benny’s appearance?   

Day was just 41 at the time, so was nearly unrecognizable under layers of old age make-up. 

To escort him to a fancy dress bank affair, Lucy Carmichael dons little old lady garb as Mrs. Abigail Vandermere. She spends most of their date avoiding his advances. 

Dennis Day’s elderly banker character bears more than a passing resemblance to the elderly banker played by Dick Van Dyke (insert) in Mary Poppins (1964).  

Two years later, in 1969, Lucille Ball appeared on “Jack Benny’s Birthday Special” which also brought together many Benny’s regulars, including Dennis Day, who surprises him with a gift. 

Irish tenor Day sings “Cuando calienta de sol” (“Love Me With All Your Heart”) in Spanish (!) while Benny accompanies him on the violin. Day’s voice breaks Benny’s expensive Stradivarius violin just as a soprano’s high trill would a crystal goblet. 

A year later, Lucille Ball and Dennis Day turned up again for “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Special”. This time, Day and Ball did not share any scenes. Ball appears briefly as the Benny’s maid and Day makes a guest appearance in an airport sketch where he is met by his real-life wife Peggy and their ten children!  

Day’s last TV appearance was less than a year before his death, in September, 1987, on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. With tears in his eyes, he spoke of his recent diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and pleaded with viewers to help support medical research for that and other neuromuscular diseases via their donations.  At the time of his passing he was 72 years old.

▪️QUIET WARNING… it’s not over until it’s over.  It is estimated Hamas still has not insignificant rocket capability from Gaza.  Although the frequency of rockets has decreased significantly, capacity and risk remains - as does the possibility of ‘surprises’.  HEZBOLLAH and Lebanon, and Shia militias in Syria, are significant risks that could expand at any time - or not.  While things seem somewhat calm for most civilian areas, risk remains HIGH.  Continue to take personal precautions and be fully supportive of the IDF, police, and first responders such as Hatzollah, MDA and ZAKA.

▪️ROCKETS from GAZA… Ashdod and surrounds, near-Gaza towns.

▪️EMBEDDED JOURNALISTS DURING MASSACRE…  (More on this topic)  Reporters, particularly someplace like Gaza, are mostly “stringers” - locals who are getting paid by the picture or article, or kept on stipend to be available.  Clearly there were some of these reporters in the attack, and somebody told them to be ready, grab their gear and come along.  Nobody (well, not us) is claiming CNN or AP knew about the attack, their locals though did and were there to take pictures to sell.  The question is: NOW that CNN and AP know, are they still working with these people?

(Amit Segal Ch. 12) Video: A day after he covered the massacre with a wrap and documented a lynching of soldiers: Hassan Ashchih, the CNN stringer, marks his car with the inscription TV for protection from IDF bombs.  What happened that CNN suddenly remembered to suspend their stringer in Gaza?  What happened is simply that they were caught red-handed.

▪️HOUTHIS Analysis… (Arab Desk) Due to the great distance (between Yemen and Israel) and the passage of missiles and drones by the Houthis over the skies of Saudi Arabia and Jordan (and Israel’s defenses), the attacks have proven to be ineffective so far. The only option left for the Houthis is if they attack the shipping going through the Bab al-Mandab strait (Indian Ocean to Red Sea).  This is the reason why the intelligence planes of the US Air Force fly non-stop (over the area).

Duas mulheres israelitas que estavam num edifício antigo na cidade de Ashkelon (sul de Israel) morreram esta terça-feira na sequência de tiros de 'rocket' disparados a partir da Faixa de Gaza, informaram os serviços de socorro locais.

"Duas mulheres morreram. Uma tinha 65 anos de idade e a outra 40 anos. Ainda não podemos anunciar as suas identidades", afirmou, em declarações à agência France-Presse (AFP), um porta-voz dos serviços nacionais de emergência Magen David Adom (MDA, equivalente israelita à Cruz Vermelha).

Segundo a AFP, o porta-voz atribuiu a morte destas duas mulheres aos vários 'rockets' lançados a partir do enclave palestiniano que visaram cidades da zona sul de Israel, como Ashkelon e Ashdod.

A agência espanhola EFE indicou, por sua vez, que estas duas mulheres serão possivelmente as primeiras mortes em Israel desde o intensificar da escalada de violência e de tensão, registado desde segunda-feira, com o enclave palestiniano.

Na segunda-feira, a violência aumentou com o lançamento de 'rockets' da Faixa de Gaza contra Israel e ataques aéreos israelitas contra este território palestiniano.

Dados referidos pela EFE apontam que cerca de 250 projéteis terão sido disparados a partir de Gaza em menos de 24 horas.

As duas mulheres estavam "num edifício antigo" sem abrigo antiaéreo e as unidades de paramédicos encontraram as vítimas "presas nos escombros" do prédio, que foi atingido por tiros de 'rocket', segundo um porta-voz da United Hatzalah (serviço médico de emergência voluntário com sede em Jerusalém), citado pela agência espanhola.

Em retaliação aos disparos de 'rockets', Israel respondeu com ataques aéreos contra a Faixa de Gaza, que causaram pelo menos 26 mortos, incluindo nove crianças, desde segunda-feira.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin Hart says hosting a re-imagined online fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association is “a major level-up for me.”

“It’s different from anything that you’ve really seen me do. And there’s a great reason behind it,” said the comic and actor, who is leading the MDA Kevin Hart Kids Telethon online on Saturday.

It’s the first telethon in six years for the MDA, once known for its popular hours-long Labor Day broadcast hosted for decades by famed comic and actor Jerry Lewis. Lewis last hosted in 2010 and died in 2017.

It’ll be streamed on LOL Network platforms including YouTube and PlutoTV.

Warzone/The Drive: Two Interceptors Launched From California To Swat ICBM In Most Ambitious Missile Defense Test Yet (Updated) The experiment has been more than a decade in the making and marks a critical juncture for the United States' rickety missile defense shield. The U.S. military has conducted an important missile defense test from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. While officials at the base have declined to give any details about the experiment so far, earlier reports said it would be the first salvo test of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, or GMD, against a mock intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM. Vandenberg confirmed the launch occurred at around 10:30 AM local time, according to local media reports. Individuals reported seeing two distinct trails, further indicating that this was the salvo test. Marcelo Zero: O que é mais obsceno, o vídeo, eleger Bolsonaro ou manter Lula preso?

 Não sei o que é mais obsceno, se o vídeo postado pelo capitão ou a indignação tardia daqueles que o ajudaram a se eleger.

Esperavam outra coisa de uma abominação intelectual e moral?

Qualquer pessoa medianamente informada sabia, há muito tempo, que o capitão sempre foi isso. Uma obscenidade política ambulante que, em mais de três décadas de vida pública, se dedicou a defender as piores e mais desavergonhadas barbaridades.

Afinal, o que é mais obsceno, o vídeo ou a defesa entusiasmada da tortura e de torturadores? O que é mais obsceno, o vídeo ou o elogio desavergonhado à ditadura? O que é mais obsceno, o vídeo ou propugnar, em praça pública, a morte ou o exílio de opositores?

O laranjal não é obscenidade típica de baixo clero?

O assassinato sem solução de Marielle não é uma grande obscenidade?  O exílio forçado de Jean Wyllis, comemorado pelo capitão, não é uma obscenidade antidemocrática?

Racismo, homofobia e misoginia, insuflados abertamente pela armada Bolsoleone, não são gigantescas obscenidades “anticivilizatórias”? A reforma da Previdência não é uma profunda obscenidade social?

Bater continência para a bandeira americana e para qualquer delegado de Trump não é uma obscenidade contra a pátria? Aliar-se acriticamente a Trump, prejudicando os interesses nacionais, não é uma obscenidade ofensiva ao Brasil?

Que pudor há em gente que quer vender o país e os direitos de seu povo na bacia das almas da ganância do capital financeiro?

Era inteiramente previsível que o governo Bolsonaro fosse resultar nesse caos desavergonhado de propostas estapafúrdias e de declarações obscenas que envergonham o Brasil perante o mundo todo.

Até este modestíssimo escriba fez inúmeras advertências sobre a aposta irresponsável na criminalização da política e do PT. Chegamos a escrever, cerca de um ano antes das eleições, que o Brasil teria de escolher entre Lula e o fascismo que se agigantava.

Os hipócritas que hoje manifestam indignação ante as inúmeras obscenidades de Bolsonaro preferiram, no entanto, derrubar Dilma, sem crime de responsabilidade, e prender Lula, sem crime algum. O importante, diziam, era tirar o PT. Prometiam que, dois meses após a queda do governo progressista, tudo voltaria à “normalidade”.

Pois agora temos de tudo, menos qualquer coisa que se pareça com normalidade.

Não temos normalidade democrática, nem social, nem econômica. Vivemos a pior crise da nossa história, e essa crise vem sendo “administrada” por gente que não seria capaz de administrar um singelo condomínio.

Com base no ódio insuflado pela mídia corporativa e a direita tradicional, e por fake news bancadas por grandes grupos econômicas, elegeu-se escória semelhante à que existia na barragem de Brumadinho. Previsivelmente, essa escória inundou a representação política e o aparelho de Estado.

Agora reclamam que a escória é suja? Não sabiam?

A grande obscenidade não é o vídeo que Bolsonaro postou. A grande obscenidade é ter se estimulado a eleição de alguém como Bolsonaro. Alguém que causa repugnância até mesmo na extrema direita que tem um verniz mínimo de civilidade. Alguém que transformou o Brasil na grande chacota mundial.

A suprema obscenidade é eleger Bolsonaro e manter Lula como preso político.

 Se durante a campanha eleitoral Jair Bolsonaro conseguiu quebrar a hegemonia da televisão formando sua base de eleitores no Facebook, Twitter e WhatsApp —que têm no Brasil um mercado de mais de 100 milhões de usuários—, nos seus primeiros dois meses como presidente da República, as redes sociais são uma bússola primordial do Governo. É nessas plataformas que o mandatário anuncia projetos e ações políticas, rebate críticas, ataca opositores e, cada vez mais, manda e recua à mercê da opinião de seus seguidores. Por um lado, o presidente segue táticas já usadas por Donald Trump de manter a audiência em um clima fabricado e perene de campanha. Por outro, provoca ressalvas, até em aliados, que se perguntam como a estratégia vai funcionar no momento em que estiverem em pauta temas naturalmente controversos, inclusive dentro da base do presidente, como a reforma da Previdência.

"Por conta da mobilização que o levou ao poder, Bolsonaro não pode sair do clima de campanha. Ele precisa manter seu público aquecido com polêmicas. Se eles estiverem frios, não retuítam e não dão likes, e a mensagem não se propaga. Por isso ele continuou elogiando a ditadura, por exemplo, sempre polemizando. Sua estratégia de comunicação depende disso", diz Pablo Ortellado, professor de Gestão Política da USP.

Para Ortellado e outros especialistas, a postagem de um vídeo obsceno na noite de terça-feira —que mostra a dois homens, um deles tocando o próprio ânus e o outro urinando nele depois— e a pergunta sobre a prática sexual golden shower é mais uma peça dessa estratégia. Ortellado considera que a postagem, que indignou os brasileiros e repercutiu em todo o mundo, foi também uma reação a um Carnaval anti-Bolsonaro, em que o presidente e seu Governo foram alvo de deboches e críticas sociopolíticas direta e indiretamente. Algumas escolas de samba, como a Estação Primeira de Mangueira e a Paraíso do Tuiuti, tematizaram questões consideradas antagônicas ao atual Executivo, como a luta dos povos negros e indígenas.

Se o tuíte controverso fortalece a coesão entre os apoiadores em torno de uma pauta conservadora nos costumes, também pode "acabar virando um bonde sem freio", alerta Fábio Malini, coordenador do Laboratório de Estudos sobre Imagem e Cibercultura (Labic) e professor da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). Ele considera que se o presidente continuar "reagindo irracionalmente a qualquer provocação de grupos políticos afastará, com o tempo, sua base eleitoral e interagirá só com os bajuladores".

·         Recuos e cálculos

Decisões concretas do Governo também tem reagido diretamente ao termômetro das redes. A mais visível e monitorável dessas plataformas é a mais usada por Bolsonaro, o Twitter, que não é a rede mais popular no Brasil e tende a ser mais elitizada do que Facebook e WhatsApp, embora não haja dados oficiais das companhias sobre o perfil socioeconômico. O perfil também levanta a questão sobre a representatividade dos usuários tuiteiros na própria base eleitoral do presidente. O ultraconservador foi eleito por 56 milhões de votos, mas, segundo pesquisa Datafolha divulgada em janeiro, apenas cerca de 14% da população brasileira é considerado um bolsonarista heavy ou intenso, por concordar com nove das 13 teses consideradas mais radicais do atual ocupante do Planalto.

De acordo com a pesquisa CNI/MDA, divulgada na semana passada, 52,6% desaprovam a decisão do Governo de facilitar a posse de armas no Brasil, umas das medidas mais significativas da gestão até agora, contra 42,9% que aprovaram a mudança. Na redes, no entanto, a reação da base mais ativa bolsonarista tem sido de veemente defesa da posse de armas e endurecimento geral da política de segurança. Foi essa base que fez a enorme pressão nas redes sociais que fez com que Bolsonaro orientasse o ministro da Justiça, Sérgio Moro a retirar o convite feito à cientista política Ilona Szabó para integrar, como suplente, o Conselho Nacional de Política Criminal e Penitenciária.

Diretora do Instituto Igarapé, think tank de renome internacional em estudos sobre segurança pública, Szabó é considerada uma esquerdista e moderada demais pelos seguidores do presidente, que criticaram tanto ela quanto Moro pela "escolha equivocada". Entre os dias 27 de fevereiro e 1º de março, foram publicados 13.594 tweets sobre o caso, a grande maioria contrária à cientista política —entre as 10 hashtags mais utilizadas nos tweets que abordaram o caso, cerca de 84% repetiam mensagens como "Ilona, não"—, de acordo com um levantamento feito pela empresa de análise AP Exata.

"A militância da direita política está atenta aos movimentos do Governo Federal e permanece bastante ativa nas redes. É uma rede que articula rapidamente e que tem obtido bons resultados nas pressões que tem feito, no intuito de fazer com que alguns atos sejam revistos, como foi o caso da nomeação de Szabó", comenta Sergio Denicoli, diretor da AP Exata.

Denicoli explica que Bolsonaro ainda colhe os frutos por ter empoderado, durante a campanha, as narrativas nas redes sociais, dialogando com questões políticas e identitárias da direita, como a defesa dos valores familiares —e, consequentemente, antagonizando com os movimentos feminista e LGBT—. O problema, acrescenta o especialista, é que o presidente não governa apenas para os cidadãos de um lado do espectro ideológico. "Ele terá que negociar com forças do centro e da esquerda, e, para isso, enfrentará essas críticas de seus apoiadores. Isso não pode frear o diálogo de questões políticas importantes, como as reformas", afirma.

É uma faca de dois gumes. Às vésperas de que o Congresso retome, de fato, suas atividades no próximo dia 12, e com uma proposta de Reforma da Previdência nas mãos, que garantias o presidente dará aos parlamentares que negociem com ele de que não voltará atrás em suas decisões caso essas desagradem seus seguidores? Para Pablo Ortellado, da USP, a estratégia de obediência às redes só continuará funcionando se Bolsonaro fizer uma cortina de fumaça, tirando pautas sensíveis de sua agenda do radar e tendo, assim, margem de manobra para negociar com os parlamentares sem o olhar escrutinador da legião de seguidores virtuais.
