Today is my 22nd anniversary at the Electronic Frontier Foundation!
22 years ago, I flew with two colleagues to LA and discovered a entertainment industry cartel conspiracy to ban general purpose computers. This led to a suit that killed the FCC's Broadcast Flag order. It was the defining day of my adult life.
If you want to wish me a happy EFF-aversary, you can join EFF and help pay the wages of people like me doing work like this.

It's really difficult to be in the tags because the amount of opinions I've see about how Mig is using Spider society as some kind of death cult like this idea not only is boring and immensely reaching, is also straight up racist
Like everyone loves nuance until the brown mexican guy is the antagonist then suddenly he is the leader of a death cult praying on the other spider's vulnerabilities?
Everyone into this idea pls use your brain cells and think why you think that
god i know it's horrible. like. it was almost automatic for some people to think this. and it sucks that some of them don't reveal realize it's like.. bad? miguel doesn't have a cult. it's not a cult. it's NOT A CULT!!!!!!!!!!!
...but he does have an occult following in the comics that he hates fun fact

I’ll switch to HDTV this September
This September when the 55th season finale of Sesame Street premieres on HBO Max, I can say goodbye to 4:3 & 16:9 standard-definition television aka SDTV & say hello to high-definition television aka HDTV in 1080i. HDTV had been around in the United States since 1998, & it does today. Most animated shows in 16:9 aspect ratio (1.78:1) were letterboxed on standard-definition television (usually found on pay television), even Regular Show reruns on Boomerang between May 28th, 2018 & March 3rd, 2019. High-definition television however, still keeps the 16:9 aspect ratio (1.78:1) in all the animated shows, the 4:3 ones are now pillarboxed. I’ll switch to HDTV in Los Angeles & not in Limay, Bataan because analog television in my country didn’t stop until next year. For audio, HDTV used Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for all animated shows & movies. HDTV features 3 video qualities: 720p, 1080i for interlaced video & 1080p. For televisions themselves, I’ll use 16:9 4K Ultra HD TVs which everybody in my house have nowadays. HDTV in the United States is ATSC which replaced NTSC on June 12, 2009 Friday. By the way, I should never watch Sesame Street on HBO Max ether.

I haven't bothered w broadcast tv in a solid 15 years and I decided to fix that, so I looked up what's been going on w the tech and uhhh wow. What a fucking Mess. They rolled out a whole new digital tv standard only like a decade later and put fucking targeted ads and drm into it. That's..... actually I'm pretty sure that's straight up illegal. You can't interfere w being able to record broadcasted video, that's like ,we had a whole big supreme court case about this. What in the fuck has the fcc been doing??

Weekly output: 1Password's Jeff Shiner, NextGen TV (x2), Verizon's myHome deals, Supreme Court on content moderation, whither Twitter, White House social media
Due to the non-magic of my filing two longer pieces earlier and then having two stories break hours apart in the same morning, Wednesday saw more than 3,200 words appear under my byline at two different sites. Patreon readers got one extra post this week, my recap of what I learned at VidCon from YouTubers, streamers and other content creators without boldface names about making a living and…

Save Free TV - Let's Stop ATSC 3.0 DRM ! Broadcasters are Encrypting Over the Air TV Channels!
Sign the petition: https://lon.tv/atsc3petition - Efforts by broadcasters to encrypt ATSC 3.0 broadcasts are accelerating with most US cities now seeing at least one station restricted. When tuners get certified it's likely DVR and other time shifting features will remain locked out. See more ATSC 3 - http://lon.tv/ATSC3 and subscribe! http://lon.tv/s

think i may get very autistic about over-the-air television omg .... i just learned theres a whole new broadcast standard ATSC 3.0 which can do like 4k hdr etc but can also have like interactive features ???? its been around since 2017 but theres been very little adoption in the us since the tuners for it are only put in the more expensive tvs and there arent too many channels that broadcast with it but like there are a few in my area i kinda wanna be able to watch them .... this may actually be the thing that gets me to finally buy a new tv and stop using the old lcd 720p tv i still have from 2012

Will Brazil be able to make TV 3.0 work?
Tumblr media
Brazil has announced the development of TV 3.0, based on the American ATSC 3.0 standard, allowing broadcast TV to merge with the digital world.
Although this combination brings many promises, there are doubts about the possibilities. It will not arrive until 2026 and will have to compete with other ecosystems that are already underway: smart TV and OTT integrators. In addition, TV 3.0 has not taken off in the United States, its country of origin.
