something i really love about amrita sher gil's work is how often she identified herself with other women of colour across class lines and continents, like so much of her work was a critique of orientalism & particularly western men's hypersexualized depictions of women of colour in art & her work repeatedly strove to recontextualize brown women's bodies as a way of 'taking back control' from white men artists and the academy. and she was someone who had studied art in france and was personally familiar with it; she won a gold medal and was elected an associate of the grand salon in paris, and notably she was the youngest person and the only asian of any gender to have received those accolades. her experiences as not only a punjabi sikh but also a hungarian jewish woman informed so much of her work, and she chose to reject the western academy and focus her work and sense of self on india and impoverished, low caste indian women in particular. and considering her death at 28 is most commonly attributed to a failed abortion - which couldn't be safely accessed as a struggling artist in lahore in 1941 - there is something about her work's emphasis on women of colour's bodily autonomy that just breaks my heart

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the cultural capital of Pakistan - Lahore on their fourth day in the city.

William and Catherine called in to meet the Governor of Punjab at his official residence as their first engagement of the day. They then visited SOS Children's Villages Pakistan and played cricket at the National Cricket Academy.

Afterwards, the Duke and Duchess visited the historical Badshahi Mosque and attended an interfaith meeting. For their final engagement of the day, they visited the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre and spent time with the families and patients receiving treatment there.

INFORMATION & CULTURE DEPARTMENT BRIEFS 52ND COMMON TRAINEES ON PUNJAB’S CULTURAL VISION UNDER CM MARYAM NAWAZ’S LEADERSHIP

Lahore, May 19, 2025:

Under the chairmanship of Secretary Information & Culture Punjab, Mr. Tahir Raza Hamdani, a briefing session was held for the under-training officers of the 52nd Common at the Civil Services Academy. The session offered a comprehensive overview of the Department of Information and Culture, Punjab, and its affiliated institutions, highlighting the department’s strategic efforts to promote language, literature, arts, and the welfare of artists across the province.

The Secretary apprised the delegation that under the visionary guidance of Provincial Minister for Information and Culture, Ms. Azma Bokhari, the department is undertaking concrete initiatives to preserve Punjab’s cultural heritage, artistic enrichment, and empowerment of writers, poets, and performers. He emphasized that the Chief Minister of Punjab, Ms. Maryam Nawaz Sharif, prioritizes cultural revival as a vital instrument for national identity and youth engagement.

Additional Secretary, Information & Culture dpt Punjab Muhammad Nawaz Gondal, Executive Director Alhamra, Mr. Tauqeer Haider Kazmi, and other senior officials were also present during the session. Section Officer Mr. Nauman Majeed delivered an in-depth presentation on the structure, achievements, service delivery models, and leadership of all institutions working under the Information and Culture Department.

The visiting officers were keenly interested in the briefing, raising questions regarding government-led press engagements, talent discovery in remote areas, and initiatives for emerging poets and young artists. In response, the department outlined its flagship Talent Hunt programs, which are being conducted across Punjab to uplift and nurture artistic talent, especially among youth. It was noted that these efforts aim to both preserve cultural heritage and project a positive national image, with artists playing a pivotal role in societal development.

Executive Director Alhamra, Mr. Kazmi, further shared that Alhamra has long been the nucleus of literary and cultural life in Pakistan, regularly hosting national and international festivals and serving as a testament to Pakistan’s creative excellence.

At the conclusion, Mr. Qadir Nawaz, on behalf of the Civil Services Academy, presented Secretary Hamdani with a souvenir, who in turn presented a bouquet to the head of the delegation. The session concluded with a group photograph, marking a meaningful exchange between civil service leadership and cultural custodians.

Asalam u aleikum. I hope you're okay. I woke up at 3 30 yesterday and took a shower. Then I asked S mamu to go and visit you. Nina asked me to call G mamu too, and then we came to meet you. It was after so long, wasn't it? I missed you so much. I love you the most, nana jee. I came back home and prayed the qaza namaz for zuhr and then prayed asr around 6. It was raining since it was already so dark when we came to meet you. The light went out, and S mamu called me to pick him up from the salon since it was raining. I went, and the moment he sat in the car, the light came back. He said he'll just get the haircut and asked me to go back home. It was so funny. I came back and sat in your room. I prayed maghrib, and then S mamu came back. We were gonna leave for lahore, but then G mamu said to leave in the morning since Ria and I have our classes late. Then I went with S mamu to get dinner since we were celebrating Ali's birthday a day earlier. I prayed isha and tahajjud around 1 30 and then used my phone. My friend and I made an online academy page, and we'll give notes, assignments, and online lectures to students for law. I hope it goes well in sha Allah. Please pray for me, nana jee. I really need it. Also that I started studying for css properly, and I'm actually scared now. Anyway, I prayed fajr around 4 and slept around 5. I woke up at 7:30, and we left for lahore. Fitness Update on Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman Released

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has released fresh updates regarding the fitness of Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman, who were both sidelined from the national team due to injuries.

Saim Ayub had been out of cricket for six weeks due to an ankle injury sustained during the Test series against South Africa in January 2025. This injury also prevented him from being included in Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad.

Fakhar Zaman, the other opening batsman, missed the series against Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe due to injury. However, after a long absence, he made his return to the national team and was also included in Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad.

Fakhar Zaman was injured during the first match of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand on February 19, which led to his withdrawal from the tournament. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Lahore's National Cricket Academy (NCA).

A statement issued by the PCB confirmed that both players were not considered for selection in any format for the recent series due to medical reasons.
