Were the kingdoms in AFE/AFGC based on any country or culture? Or were they more generic medieval european fantasy
Actually, yes! But they were kept a little on the vague side as well, with some taking inspiration from more than one country and others a little more fantasy than reality.
Acalathoy itself was based off of Germany- specifically the portions of the country that are marshy or wetlands. Some of the buildings are loosely described to resemble medieval German dwellings and the country itself, Durchnässt, is German for 'wet' or 'soaked'.
Olaylark, in contrast, was sort of to have it be the idealized sort of fantasy kingdom, if you get my drift. It's full of passages and pretty architecture, but is somewhat detached from its own location. Olaylark is secluded within its walls while Acalathoy is at the mercy of its heartland. XD
That being said, Olaylark was framed to be in an area that is on the edge of a ocean like the Mediterranean. Filomena herself was an ethnicity that was stylized to match- being based off of Greek, but not given a name as, you know, Greece doesn't exist there.
Though the one that took the most inspiration was Perlosophes, the City of Mages. Despite the name, Perlosophes was built with a mixture of ancient Persia and Babylon (specifically the ancient wonder the Babylon Gardens) in mind. Especially the Babylon Gardens, really. There's been plenty of debate on if they really existed but the idea about them always fascinated me.
But that being said again, I didn't make the culture to similar to real life. Largely because I didn't want to end up portraying a culture I do not fully understand in a questionable way. So, the locations are more inspired by those real-life locals, but the actual locations themselves were more fantasy oriented.
One of the things I thought was kinda cool was that the word magus can mean sorcerer OR a member of a caste in ancient Persia. You better believe I pounced on that!

Princess!! Augh, help me I love drawing her so much. I’m already on another page of sketches! Of course, we’ve also got our beautiful queen! Enjoy the little added headcanons I put- feel free to ask any questions!
I don’t draw a lot of complex outfits, so it was a nice little challenge to try and make more royalty-based wear! :3

How large is Acalathoy? What is the layout? Like, is it structured into neighborhoods, or are houses just dotted about? Is there a Town Square/Plaza? Are the shops grouped up? How much space is between the castle and the city. Does the moat go around the castle itself, or the entirety of Acalathoy?
Acalathoy is a relatively average sized kingdom when compared to one like Delvyde. It is about the size of Olaylark, but with the layout a little more compact and without a harbor.
There is a protection wall that surrounds both the town and the castle, but the town does not surround the castle. More so, the town is sort of beside the castle and down a bit of a slope. There are farms and other abodes on the outside of the wall, including Coffcord's house, but most of the homes, shops, ect. are located on the inside.
Inside the city, houses are built of wood and stone and stay relatively close together. Paths of stone are frequently overgrown by moss, but are typically dry in frequently rainy conditions. Jettying architecture is a common trait in the homes and due to the hilly terrain beneath the city, there are a plethora of stone stairs to higher city levels. There are shops scattered about, but there is a main square where many of them reside, along with the market itself.
There is a short road leading from the main square to the castle which is up a moderately uncomfortable slope. The gates into the castle are guarded well, but typically open during daylight hours. There is a second entrance into the castle through the outer wall, but this one is almost always kept closed.
The moat circles the castle inside the wall, but then circles the town on the outside of the wall, feeding into the river that passes by Coffcord's home.
It should be noted that the reason Coffcord's home is so far out is because he requires so much room for his work- and because the land was effectively gifted to him. You can't really barter when the king's giving you a plot of earth.
Hope that answered some questions! ^_^

Mister Jester! Do you still feel safe in the castle, even knowing you, the princess and the fate of the kingdom almost perished in it? Are you scared something like that will happen again?
"Yes and yes! See, yes, the chances of this happening again are, unfortunately, very high. Not from Olaylark, I hear they were quite crippled, but from other kingdoms looking for what they consider an easy target, a wounded animal.
What they don't realize is that we haven't just recovered, but we remembered, and we won't be caught off guard again! The castle has been rebuilt with better defenses and escape routes, the new soldiers have learned fear from the mistakes of those who fell before them, and we are all watching very closely.
And I am not above grabbing my princess and running for the hills at the first sight of trouble. I think the kingdom may be banking on it."

Lure, Primrose!
"My childhood was quite magical! I began my jester training at a young age, between my studies and tending to my queen, of course. It spared me a life of hard labor, instead spending long afternoons mimicking my queen's pluck of harp strings on my own. I was encouraged to learn stories that I may recite on a whim, taught how to read, to write, music as well as words. All while my queen kept me at her side.
Yes, it truly was a good time. I do miss her, but not too terribly. For you see, I relive my childhood most frequently. I now teach my princess some of the same lessons the queen taught to me, and tell her the same stories I was encouraged to remember.
Fate smiled upon me- for a while, at least!"

So, how do the lands and kingdoms and stuff work in AFE? Is Durchnässt a country of sorts? What would be stopping a peasant from gathering up their closest friends and starting a village on land that isnt owned by a king, if there is any
Durchnasst is the country that Acalathoy resides in. Like the name implies- meaning 'soaked'- the land is comprised of quite a bit of marshlands and meadows, getting plentiful rainfall.
The kingdoms of Acalathoy and Olaylark work more like traditional medieval kingdoms with their population being comprised of layers of hierarchy. Peasants make up a good chunk of that population.
Unlike serfs, peasants could very well leave together to form their own village (as long as it was not on land owned by a kingdom) or to join another village or kingdom. The thing is, living in a kingdom sort of comes with its own pros and cons. Imagine how dangerous travel would be, especially if you're heading into an unknown.
The difference being that unlike in our ancient history, in AFE there are other kinds of city structures that exist. The wealthy merchant city of Delvyde works under a would-be counsel, which helps with their trade and progress, but suffers when they are antagonized by another, possibly stronger kingdom.
The City of Mages, a city in the upcoming book, works under a medieval hierarchy with the exception that instead of being ruled over by royalty, it is largely governed by the seraglio, the palace that homes the magus scholars... Though because of this, certain things may be able to slip through the cracks.
Acalathoy, while still technically a monarchy, is currently being overseen by a counsel of high ranking individuals. This counsel is created at the end of A Fool's Endeavor to help rebuild the kingdom and keep it managed until Vivianne comes of age.
This counsel is currently seated by: Radelle du Perche- matriarch of a family trade of merchants and well-known, and well-spoke, in the community. Guiscard- elderly noble who is the last surviving advisor of Acalathoy's king. Coffcord- being a renowned alchemist and also close advisor to the queen and king of Acalathoy. Jester Lure- speaking on behalf of the princess.
Sir Morrick was also considered for a position, but he declined. There is a fifth chair being reserved for a magus, if they can ever get one. Their last one left under... questionable circumstances.

Morrick 🏡
send 🏡 for a home headcanon
While we know little about Morrick's life before the events of A Fool's Endeavor- save that he was knighted and served in Acalathoy- Morrick's early life wasn't bad and he still has ties with his family.
Morrick is the son of a nobleman and left home at a young age to become a ward. He then trained, studied, and served until eventually achieving the status of knighthood, which he served until the attack on Acalathoy.
Though he does not speak to them frequently, he is on good terms with his parents. He is also close to his brother, who joined a monastery instead of pursuing a similar trade as Morrick.
"Morrick" is actually the family name. He takes it as his first name simply because he prefers to do so.

Character Essay: Yves the “Hunter”
Today I decided to type a detailed essay about the mysterious Yves from my books A Fool’s Endeavor and A Fool’s Golden Cage.
While travelling to Olaylark to save the princess, Jester Lure and his companions came upon Yves numerous times in brief instances. Eventually, once it became clear he was heading in the same direction, he began to travel alongside them for the end of their journey.
While vague about his life and motives, Yves is a loyal companion who brings with him a vast knowledge on hunting, survival, and a seemingly bottomless supply of shillings. A skilled archer, Yves usually keeps his composure in most situations and is cool and sardonic in nature.
However, Yves has his own slew of secrets, and it is clear that his past life looms over his head even now.
Name: Yves (Ee-ves) Name Meaning: Yew, such as the Yew Tree.
Appearance: Yves is a young man in his mid-twenties with olive skin and eyes, and brunette hair pulled back in a short tail. He usually wears basic travelling clothes, typically with a hood and heavy, leather gloves. While working such a rough trade, Yves has a clean appearance and few scars, and carries himself with dignity.
Occupation: As said earlier, Yves technically works as a hunter, but is more of a traveler by nature who frequently moved around before the events of the book. He knows much on trapping and cleaning animals, and shows little trouble performing what he considers is a clean kill- though only hunts for meat or work, not as a hobby. Yves is well versed in falconry and has invested long hours in raising hunting falcons from birth, specifically a rare breed from Ashenloft. He becomes deeply attached to these birds and sees them as family members.
Past: Little is known about Yves’ history except that he lived in Ashenloft before it was attacked and virtually destroyed by Olaylark. Yves has no living family members and no current homestead.
Relationships:  Lure: Originally, Lure was suspicious of Yves due to his interest in their quest. Once it became clear that Yves meant no ill will towards them, he and Lure fell into better terms. While they occasionally exchange wit, the two are on mostly good terms and seldom disagree with each other.
Morrick: After original distrust, Yves and Morrick eventually formed a mutual respect. The two frequently exchange concerns and formulate strategies together. They also have a few similar interests due to a similar upbringing.
Balsam: Originally unnerved by Yves, Balsam became impressed by his tales of travel and began to look up to him an a seasoned adventurer. This later started to wane when he found out more about Yves personality and motives, however Balsam remained intrigued by Yves and was the one who convinced him to stay in Acalathoy.  Balsam and Yves have contrasting ideals but get along well, though sometimes the former gets exasperated by the latter’s aloof behavior or indirectness. Yves is mostly amused by this, though does listen to what Balsam says and respects him as an alchemist. He is known to be protective of the younger man, even when the clashing ideals come out once more. Balsam is the only person who Yves willingly trusts his birds with, unless under specific circumstances where he doesn’t have a choice.
Presque: Yves’ primary falcon. Because of his breeding, he is more intelligent than typical falcons, making him capable of feeling stronger attachment and affection towards his master. Presque is entirely loyal to Yves and will attack those who harm him.
Skills: Hunting, skinning and cleaning, archery, some knife combat, falconry, survival knowledge, and a knowledge of poisons.
Hobbies: When not working, Yves enjoys reading, tending to his birds, cooking, and games such as cards, dice, and chess. He’s not afraid to put money down on a game either.
Except to see Yves return for a larger role in A Fool’s Golden Cage!

Sir Morrick: A Character Questionnaire
Here we are with yet another character sheet on another member of the main cast of A Fool’s Endeavor and A Fool’s Golden Cage. The last of the main three of the first novel and one of the main five in the second: the knight, Sir Morrick.
Short Description: Name: Sir Morrick (Morrick is his last name, but he uses it as his first as well.)
Pronounced: More-ick.
Age: Mid-twenties to late-twenties.
Extra: Nickname: None.
Occupation: Knight of the Royal Guard
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Morrick is tall with a muscular build and a Caucasian skin tone. His hair is dark brown, edging on black, and is kept at chin length and pulled back. His eye color is blue and he has a noticeable scar on his chin, but his other scars are hidden under his clothing.
Personality: Morrick is devoted, loyal, proud, and at times deeply stoic. He takes a great deal of seriousness in his responsibilities and the oaths and laws he has agreed to. He idolizes the ideals of a knight and thus attempts to live up to them with success, but holds himself ruthlessly accountable even when he isn’t at fault. His standards in himself are ruthless, his standards in others are almost just as high. Morrick, while proud of his title and unafraid to exert the noble blood he was born into, is respectful towards others if they show the same level in return. He is willing to charm others if it is needed and is capable of bargaining well. That being said, Morrick is not afraid of work, and if put in the situation will turn to hard labor for the short term if it means success further on. But there is another side of him that is guarded exclusively for those who become part of his inner circle. Morrick can be compassionate and concerns himself greatly over the well beings of loved ones. He’s also protective, but unabashedly blunt. He will tell them things they don’t want to hear if it is to protect them in the long run. He will also confront battles head on if it means to protect said loved ones or the royal family.
Fandom: A Fool’s Fables (A Fool’s Endeavor, A Fool’s Golden Cage, ect.)
Voice: Deep, gravelly, warm.
Backstory: Morrick was born of noble blood and had a comfortable childhood. At a young age he was sent to Acalathoy to become a squire, and served until he was appointed a knight. He was in the early years of knighthood when the attack on Castle Acalathoy transpired.
Ongoing Story: During the attack on the castle, Morrick was one of few knights that survived and was kept captive at a camp to be questioned. After being freed by Lure and Balsam, he is so struck with survivor’s guilt that he goes along with them, even though he doesn’t believe they will survive. Over the events of the book, Morrick is a key member in Lure and Balsam’s survival, and becomes more hopeful and determined in their journey.  During the second book, Morrick will again accompany Lure and Balsam on their journey. Though this time out of a more personal obligation than due to his title.
Likes: Stability, chess and cards, tasks that calm him- such as cleaning his blade, teaching- such as in combat or other tasks, reading and writing poetry, aged wine, having control of a situation, feeling like he is a benefit to the kingdom, and jestering.
Dislikes: Loss of control, seeing those he cares about getting hurt or knowing he cannot help them, getting injured or ill- anything that effects his performance, Lure or Balsam needlessly risking their lives, being treated beneath his status, and the rejection of common sense.
Strengths: Morrick is skilled in both swordplay and hand-to-hand combat, though would much prefer the former to the latter. Being a knight, he is also adept in archery- though doesn’t prefer it- horseback riding, hunting, and swimming. He is also well-read and is skilled in strategizing.
Weaknesses: Morrick is frequently willing to put himself on the line to protect others, which may put him in danger more often than not. Especially when he feels that, as a knight, he is obligated to step in and help the innocent and defenseless. He is frequently reigned in by these oaths and rules that he has given himself, which could put him under too much pressure in the long run. Morrick simply carries more weight than he should on his shoulders.
Favorite color(s): Red, gold, and blue.
Kind of clothing: When in the castle, Morrick dresses in typical knight garb. In his quarters he will wear nicely tailored tunics, typical to nobility, and elsewise is known to wear light armor just in case something happens. However, during the length of A Fool’s Endeavor, Morrick is stripped down to little more than a simple tunic and pants, with his only armor being on his boots. He goes through the entire journey making this work. In the second book, Morrick travels in more fitting clothing.
What element would they be?: Probably Earth, as he is very grounded.
Hobbies: In his spare time, Morrick enjoys games of chess and cards, reads, and writes poetry, though keeps hushed about this. He also trains squires, including his own, and participates in jousting tournaments for his kingdom.
Special skills/talents: I think I’ve covered most of them.
Patience level: Varies. In situations that are stressful, Morrick’s patience wears thin quickly. Such as in circumstances where someone neglects their duties or he sees them as dismissing an important matter. During the events of the first book, he is especially testy because he is wracked with guilt and handling everything poorly. That being said, he works well with squires, and is firm without being strict. He also tends to take Lure’s eccentricities in stride, unbothered by them unless they lead to danger.
Regrets: Morrick is very regretful that he didn’t do more doing the attack on the castle. Even though he did all he could, he doesn’t consider it enough.
Favorite places: Other than places such as the study and his quarters, he enjoys spending time out in the courtyard.
Role model: He has always revered the kings of Acalathoy. He thought highly of the fallen king and still speaks of him with respect and adoration. He also looks up to the tales and successes of the former king, the Golden Eyed King, who was the father of the queen.
Favorite foods: Roasted boar, venison, or pheasant, or roasted and seasoned vegetables are in his favorites. He also enjoys aged or spiced wines, sweetened mead, or ale that isn’t overly strong tasting. He is very fond of the taste of honey.
Favorite book: Morrick has few book preferences. He enjoys reading and isn’t picky about the contents.
Mode of transportation: Prefers travelling on horseback than on foot, but frequently gets stuck travelling on foot.
Weapon: Morrick has a few different blades that he switches out between. He still holds onto the one he acquired during his first travels, though uses it less than the ones he has of higher quality. He also carries a dagger on his belt.
Smells like: herosmellslike.com claims Morrick smells like ‘thistles and delight’. Not sure what delight smells like, but I assume it’s good.
How do they feel about love: His views on love were originally very simplistic, believing that companionship and marriage were more of business than pleasure. While he still somewhat believes this, having a taste of genuine romantic love is beginning to change his perspective.
Least favorite color: Green.
Home town/Where they live now: the Kingdom of Acalathoy
Makes a living by: Being a knight of the royal guard.
Fears or phobias: Other than an unreasonable fear of failure, not really.
Race, ethnicity and nationality: Morrick is a citizen of Acalathoy with Caucasian skin who was born to a noble household. Music they listen to: He prefers standing harp music but will listen to anything with little complaint.
Bad habits: He has a tendency to be stubborn, especially if he knows his judgement is sound and that someone is trying to change it. Though he may eventually listen to reason, this can cause temporary issues and disagreements.
What turns them on: While stoic and at times somber, Morrick takes to those who have a more positive disposition. He almost craves it, and he desires to be challenged and uplifted.
What turns them off: He is not fond of meekness in romantic partners. It is fine in friends and those working alongside him, but quietness stifles his curiosity.
Religious and to what extent? Any spiritual beliefs?: Morrick believes in God and considers any oath that he makes ‘under’ God to be just as viable as one he makes ‘to’ God. That being said, he does not frequently pray and hasn’t been known to push these beliefs upon others.
Pet peeves: When he witnesses someone of power failing in their position, especially if it is something he feels like he could do better.
Personal problems: He is severely allergic to certain kinds of uncommon fruit.
What ONE item would they take to an uninhabited island: Probably a flint and steel or some other way to start a fire. He has made weapons on the fly in the past, but fire wouldn’t be as easy.
Outlook on life: While having his ups and downs in the past, Morrick is currently content and aims to keep it that way.
Most important person in their life: It should be Princess Vivianne, but it clearly is Jester Lure.
What was your character like as a child: He was rambunctious when he was young and very close to his parents and siblings. Once he became a squire, this excitement was reigned in and he took to his tasks as best as he could, eager to become a knight.
What is something other people assume about your character?: Either that he is the perfect image of a knight, or that he is massively stubborn and completely humorless. Though spending any amount of time with him starts to shed this image.
Do they like the name they were given: Morrick wasn’t fond of his birth name, so he dropped it in favor of just using his last name.
Nervous habits: None.
Siblings: He has a brother and a sister. His brother is a monk while his sister still lives at the family estate.
Wears jewelry: None.
Have they ever wanted to commit suicide: The closest Morrick got was after the attack on Acalathoy. Left with nothing, he joined on Lure and Balsam’s quest believing it would kill him. Not exactly suicide, but desperation causing him to latch to the only option and uncaring whether it would kill him. The further they got, the more determined he was to survive.
Close friends: Morrick and Lure originally started out at odds with one another, both dealing with their own issues and frustrations. However, they slowly begin to bond through mutual interests, and eventually allowed one another to venture into their comfort zones. While he doesn’t always agree with Lure, he begins to respect him and his opinions, which then grows into admiration. It was only a matter of time before their unexpected friendship wasn’t enough.
While Morrick originally saw Balsam as more of an attendant than much else, he grew to respect him for his skills in alchemy and his rationality. Though he still clearly sees Balsam as a youth, he considers him a friend and a much needed ally.
Morrick was originally wary of Yves, believing him to be a spy. After the events of the journey, he no longer suspects this and is now on good terms with him. While Yves has not admitted to it, Morrick seems aware that he came from a wealthier household than he has admitted to.
He also admires Captain Filomena and is impressed by the tight ship she runs and the effectiveness of her crew. They are on good terms.
First kiss? (when and with whom): Please read the Lure questionnaire, as I go into full detail there. *Wink*
Views on gambling, lying, killing, etc…: Morrick is strict in his beliefs that gambling, thievery, and trickery are wrong. However, he does not see Lure’s smooth talking as being in the same vein. H won’t hold a grudge if there is a understandable reason the crimes were committed either. Morrick’s view on killing is much different. He stands by killing in self-defense, even when he has been known to show mercy.
How much do they value money: Morrick doesn’t have much need for money in his already comfortable situation. Though he is looking forward to earning a fief.
Wants to get married: Originally just out of obligation.
Wants to have kids, raise a family: Again, originally just out of obligation. Feelings are now mixed.
Sworn enemy: He still holds a grudge against the Kingdom of Olaylark. Not exactly the citizens, but cabinet members, any remaining royalty, and those who protect them. Those making the decisions are those he looks down upon.
Is their name a pun of anything: A corruption of Maurice and Merrick, which is already a corruption of Maurice. Chances are, Morrick’s name might actually be Maurice Maurice. XD
Most traumatic experience: Being the sole survivor of the battle between Acalathoy and Olaylark. Ironically, his survival with few wounds left more scars than if he might’ve been truly battered. While he has recovered since and found a new calling to provide for his kingdom, that loss weighed on him heavily for some time.
Favorite holiday: The Feast of Fools. Lure gets a kick out of it, so Morrick does too. He is also fond of Blessed Sunday, a religious holiday in the summertime, as that’s when he makes an annual pilgrimage to visit his family.
Well, that’s it for now! Hope you enjoyed!

Jester Lure: A Massive Character Questionnaire
Here’s a long list of questions and answers detailing Jester Lure, the lead character in my book A Fool’s Endeavor and the upcoming A Fool’s Golden Cage. The questions were taken from Charahub, a website for creating and tracking characters that was unfortunately shut down. Thankfully, a kind soul saved the list of questions- so here we go!
Short Description: Name: Lure or Jester Lure by title.
Pronounced: Like lure usually is- “Loo-er”.
Age: Early twenties.
Extra: Nickname: None, just Lure.
Occupation: Court jester to the princess of Acalathoy, full-time jester.
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Usually seen wearing a full jester ensemble of navy and cyan, fit with hat, gloves, and boots. Wears a gold and ivory colored mask that fully covers his face. Underneath his costume, he has sienna skin- affectionately called ‘cinnamon’- and soft brown hair that is usually bedraggled from his costume.
Personality: Lure is vibrant and full of life, with a sarcastic streak and an ounce of wit mixed in. He tries to keep things optimistic even when his words portray him as a bit more cynical than that. He can be reckless at times, but is smart enough to prefer talking himself out of a situation before jeopardizing himself, and is rather good at it. There are parts to him that are sly and cunning, but Lure is not without morals, and he is very loyal to those who become close with him. He relishes his job as jester and holds his title with pride, but begrudgingly accepts that few others respects his role. He loves his young princess and enjoys the life he has with her, enough so that he is able to stifle the desire he has for travel and adventure. (Though if given the proper means, Lure will throw himself into an adventure without much preparation and find a way to stay on his feet.)
Fandom: A Fool’s Fables (A Fool’s Endeavor, A Fool’s Golden Cage, ect.)
Sexuality: The only person Lure’s been attracted to has been another man.
Voice: Naturally warm, going between cheerfully chirp to dead flat to go with the mood.
Back Story: The backstory Lure spreads is that he was found by the queen as a baby, who was so endeared by him that she took him in and raised him as her personal jester. Sadly, the queen passed on shortly after the birth of her daughter. Lure became the princess’ jester to help make up for the lack of a mother figure. Even though the king wasn’t entirely fond of him, he helped raise her alongside the nursemaid who helped raise him.
Ongoing Story: In A Fool’s Endeavor, an attack on the castle led to the king being killed and the princess being kidnapped. Lure went on a foolhardy quest to rescue her, joining up with Apprentice Balsam, Sir Morrick, and Hunter Yves. In A Fool’s Golden Cage, Lure will be afflicted with a strange ailment and need to journey for a cure, again accompanied by his companions.
Likes: Music, Astronomy, Astrology, Divination Cards (Tarot), the overall act of jesting, reading fables, extravagant costumes and colorful fabrics, roasted pheasant and pastries, feeling like he won an argument, traveling, his close knit group of allies, tending to his princess, and being able to witness extraordinary things up close.
Dislikes: His costume getting destroyed and needing mending, ‘peasant food’ such as sop and gruel, ‘evil’ jester stereotypes, loss of control or choice, his princess being upset, and stagnation.
Strengths: Lure is athletic and acrobatic, and knows some self-defense techniques. He’s capable with a dagger, which he always keeps in his boot, and by the second book begins bringing a poleaxe with him. However, Lure’s greatest strength is his ability to find ways around direct fighting. If he can find a way that avoids direct conflict then he will take it. He also uses a more theatrical persona to convince others more easily, usually to mislead or get assistance.
Weaknesses: Lure can be a bit reckless and get in over his head without considering the repercussions. He’s also of slender build and wears no armor, meaning that if confronted head on he has a mark disadvantage.
Favorite color: Blue, all shades.
Kind of clothing: As said before, Lure typically wears a navy and cyan jester costume. He has a few of these, most in the same colors but with different patterns on them. Instead of typical jester shoes, he wears leather boots, and typically carries a card pouch at his waist.
What element would they be?: Fire. Burns warmly, glows brightly, and doesn’t handle water too well.  (At least, at the beginning of the first book.)
Theme song: Lure might write his own, but personally I could see ‘The Show Must Go On’ or ‘Seven Seas of Rhye’ by Queen.
Deadly sin that best represents them: Maybe lust- not in the typical sexual sense, but that lust for life and his job in life being to literally entertain and enthrall.
Hobbies: Divination Card reading, instrument playing, reading, and dabbles in astronomy and alchemy at times. He also enjoys playing games like chess, cards, and backgammon.
Special skills/talents: Lure is a gifted virtuoso, learning how to play the harp and lute at a young age. As such, he can pretty much work with any string instrument and make some form of music, even if it is new to him. He’s also good with making up song lyrics on the spot. There are other various things, such as juggling, tumbling, and various ‘jester’ acts that would be expected. Knows some self-defense.
Patience level: Depends on the circumstances, but Lure’s capable of grin-and-bearing through many situations if the need comes. If in a situation where it doesn’t matter what he says, he will willingly speak his mind.
Regrets: During A Fool’s Endeavor he regrets letting the princess get captured, even when he truly tried to protect her, but gets over it by the second book. Lure’s not the type to linger on past stakes after they are no longer relevant.
Favorite places: Lure has a few special places. The princess’ bedroom and playroom is one of them, as this is where he spent most of his time in raising and playing with the young girl. The courtyard is also a place where he frequently gets away to. Even though introduced to it at a poor time in his life, Lure is fond of Alchemist Coffcord’s home. It is the only ‘quaint’ home he would prefer over the castle setting.
Role model: He looked up to both the queen and the king while growing up.
Favorite foods: Roasted pheasant, venison, tarts, pies, mousse, freshly baked bread, rich cheese, sugared and glazed nuts, and fruits such as figs, plums, and pomegranates.
Favorite book: He loves fairy tales, fables, and legends that he can read and then retell to others later.
Mode of transportation: Across the books he’s used various means of transportation- mostly walking- but he knows how to ride a horse.
Weapon: Keeps a dagger in his boot that he got from Balsam. During the second book, Morrick gives him a poleaxe to defend himself.
Smells like: herosmellslike.com claims Lure smells like ‘spring water and desert’, so lets go with that.
How do they feel about love: Lure has experienced familial, platonic, and romantic love and is for all three. As cynical as he is, he makes bonds with people and then does all he can to keep them.
Least favorite color: Dull grey or sunken brown- if it is worn out and faded.
Home town/Where they live now: the Kingdom of Acalathoy
Makes a living by: Being the court jester and personal playmate of the princess.
Fears or phobias: During A Fool’s Endeavor, Lure copes with a fear of water and drowning, but he slowly overcomes it and faces it by the end of the book. One of his biggest fears is, ironically, to lose his title of a jester and be forced to the life of a nameless, faceless jester.
Race, ethnicity and nationality: Lure is a citizen of Acalathoy and of mixed ethnicity, with his mother being fair skinned and his father having a darker skin tone. Music they listen to: He likes most kinds of music, but especially likes flute music- perhaps because it is the one instrument he has limited access to and is completely unpracticed in.
Bad habits: The closest thing would be Lure’s pickiness with food.
What turns them on: He’s excited by displays of strength and passion, but also has an extreme soft spot for those who are willing to show a gentle hand.
What turns them off: Romantic-wise, he is not interested in anyone like himself, ironically enough. He’s also disinterested in ‘stuffy’ people who lack passion in something.
If they transitioned from their world to ours, how would they react: Lure would put on a bright face and be full of quips, all while withholding the inward horror that none of his survival tactics would work here... Though he would probably like how accessible entertainment is.
Religious and to what extent? Any spiritual beliefs?: There are various religions in Lure’s world. He worships one that may be titled ‘Fateism’, which worships the Creator, Death, and Fate. While Lure is not overly religious, he does seem to believe in some divine being.
Pet peeves: The biggest one would be the constantly passed around belief that jesters are evil and shady. Though he also doesn’t like narrow-minded folk or people unwilling to listen to reason.
Personal problems: Lure must constantly wear a mask to hide a secret that isn’t just his.
What ONE item would they take to an uninhabited island: Probably his dagger. It has so many uses.
Outlook on life: A cynical realist, Lure actually has a positive outlook, believing that it is worth fighting for a better life.
Most important person in their life: Even with a romantic partner and friends, Princess Vivianne would still be the most important person in his life. He does all he can to protect her and keep her happy.
What was your character like as a child: He was attentive and well-behaved, listening closely to his queen and learning everything she taught him.
What (if they can) does your character eat: Usually whatever the princess is dining on or served to the court.
What is something other people assume about your character?: That he’s evil, both in story and out of the story. That evil jester plot point is tough to shake. XD
Do they like the name they were given: Lure loves his name so much that the fake name he occasionally uses, Cajole, is just a variation of his own name.
Nervous habits: He tugs at his collar when he gets flustered or overheated.
Siblings: Short answer: Yes.
Wears jewelry: Only if the mask counts.
Have they ever wanted to commit suicide: Never. Even at his lowest point, with his princess gone and his home destroyed, him at a loss and running out of options, Lure was desperate but unwilling to give up. He will risk his life for the slim chance he can succeed, but he is not suicidal.
Close friends: Balsam would be Lure’s closest friend. Their clashing personalities fill a void that each of them has and over the course of the books they become almost like brothers. Though Lure might worry Balsam at times, but he also guides him to be more bold. Likewise, Lure trusts Balsam’s word and is the first to assure him that he is more skilled than a simple apprentice.  Morrick originally start at odds, but then they start to acquire a mutual respect and understanding. Which then involves into something deeper and less friendly. While Yves is largely standoffish with everyone, Lure and Yves do become friendly and respect one another. They also share a similar interest in dry humor. Elia is the nursemaid who Lure has been close with for years, and is more of a motherly figure than a friend. In the same vein, Lure seem to look to Coffcord like a grandfather figure.
First kiss? (when and with whom): Spoilers: . Lure’s first kiss was with Morrick. If counting non-mouth kisses, his first is one Morrick gives him on the neck while on board a ship to Olaylark. The first true kiss would be between Lure and Morrick in an inn not too long after this.
Views on gambling, lying, killing, etc...: Lure’s views on morals are not black and white. He makes playful jokes about those who give into temptation, but he doesn’t show real disdain for them. While he doesn’t think highly of lying and stealing, he is willing to do either if it is a situation where the greater picture is more important. Especially if it might lead to a life or death situation. While Lure believes self-defense is justified, him actually having to kill someone would horrify him- as seen in the first book.
How much do they value money: Because of Lure’s circumstances- growing up in a court without much need for it- he sees money as just a tool and a means to an end. When in the castle, he’s willing to hand over shillings without care. Outside the castle, he’s willing to perform and tell fortunes to make shillings if it means supporting him and his allies.
Wants to get married: A private ceremony would be fine with him.
Wants to have kids, raise a family: He pretty much raised the princess, but he wouldn’t be against raising a ward or orphan offered to the court. Chances of him having his own children are unlikely.
Sworn enemy: None anymore.
Is their name a pun of anything: Lure’s name is literally a play on entertainment. That being said, the name Lure can be a stand-in for the name Leroy, which means ‘the King’. This was something I found out after naming him, so it wasn’t on purpose. XD
Anyone they really hate: During the first book, he despised the King of Olaylark, who was the one who attacked his kingdom and took the princess.
Most traumatic experience: Even with the horrible attack on the castle, the death of the queen is still what he considers one of the worst periods of his life. Largely because of how quickly she passed.
Favorite holiday: The Feast of Fools, a jester themed holiday that falls close to what we would see as Christmas. Slightly different than the Feast of Fools from our history, the day is seen as a celebration of merriment, playfulness, indulgence, and gift exchange.
Well, that’s it for now! Hope you enjoyed!

Balsam the Apprentice: A Character Questionnaire
Since the one with Lure did so well, I decided to continue on by doing one for the secondary main character of A Fool’s Endeavor and A Fool’s Golden Cage: Balsam, the Alchemist’s apprentice.
Short Description: Name: Balsam
Pronounced: Baal-sum
Age: Very early twenties. A couple of years younger than Lure.
Extra: Nickname: None.
Occupation: Apprentice to Alchemist Coffcord, a highly regarded alchemist.
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Balsam is of slender build and stands taller than Lure, with tanned skin and brunette hair kept short and tussled/faint curls. His eyes are also brown and his face is youthful, though not overly young-looking. Usually seen carrying around his supply bag.
Personality: Balsam is friendly and reserved, but has a slight sarcastic streak that tends to appear in brief moments. He balances a thin line between keeping his calm in dire situations and becoming overwhelmed by the smallest of things, and usually straddles this line with the most awkward form of grace. While frequently worrying and cautious, Balsam is willing to fight past these fears if not given any choice, especially if someone he loves is put into dire circumstances. Balsam is rather intelligent and when emotions are set aside can usually get himself out of most situations with his knowledge on alchemy.  When accompanying his master, Balsam becomes much more subdued and obedient, which eventually leads to him coming to the revelation that he doesn’t feel like his own person. That being said, he is very close to his master, and willingly rejects the notion that he is ready to set out on his own.
Fandom: A Fool’s Fables (A Fool’s Endeavor, A Fool’s Golden Cage, ect.)
Sexuality: Balsam has had no sexual experience up to now.
Voice: Matured but with touches of youthfulness. Friendly and light.
Back Story: Balsam was orphaned at a young age and taken in by Coffcord to become his apprentice. For most of his youth and young adulthood he was raised and taught by his master. During this time he learned about medicines and chemical concoctions that would come to use later.
Ongoing Story: In A Fool’s Endeavor, Balsam accompanies Lure on his quest to save the princess. Though confident at first, he becomes overwhelmed with the journey, but manages to find his footing and proves to be a valuable ally.
In A Fool’s Golden Cage, Balsam accompanies Lure to the City of Mages due to him being part of the reason Lure has become cursed.
Likes: Astronomy, reading, gardening, studying, cooking, exploring, exploring without feeling like he’s about to be jumped by something, comfort food, learning from and tending to Coffcord, travelling and seeing new lands, and animals, especially trained birds and rabbits.
Dislikes: Lure being ‘difficult’, being unable to figure out or remember a formula, chemicals getting spilled in his bag, seeing animals being injured or suffering, large and aggressive wild animals, and disappointing Coffcord.
Strengths: While mildly athletic, Balsam’s real skill comes from his knowledge of alchemy. He knows both medicinal and chemical forms of alchemy, being able to create a burn paste as easily as he’s able to create an acid that eats through metal. He also has some skill in creating explosives. Other than this, Balsam also has basic skills of surviving in the wild and enough medical know-how to give first aid on the fly. While he doesn’t like killing animals, he- in theory- knows how to make snares with limited success.
Weaknesses: Balsam has only average strength and little training in any form of weapon usage. He also can get overwhelmed and panic, though usually is able to regain composure once the situation gets too dire.
Favorite color: Greens, browns, and neutral shades.
Kind of clothing: He usually wears basic clothes in standard colors, not too concerned in how he looks and much more concerned in having comfortable clothes that he can work in.
What element would they be?: Earth. Grounded and made to grow ideas and possibilities from.
Deadly sin that best represents them: I’m not really sure. Balsam doesn’t really fit well with any of the basic sins.
Hobbies: Reading, astronomy, researching chemicals, cooking, games like chess and backgammon, gardening, drawing, and as of the second book, some dabbling in aviculture.
Special skills/talents: Other than his alchemy training, which has been the core of his teachings, and his ability to give first aid, Balsam is also a good cook and usually able to make something out of very little. He’s also good at finding food and water when in the wild, and making due with what he can finds.
Patience level: Usually very patient, but when pushed to the limit the occasional snark might slip out. It takes a lot more to get him to that point.
Regrets: During A Fool’s Endeavor he has regrets halfway through the book about going on the quest, but is able to push through these doubts and fears. Regrets are much stronger in A Fool’s Golden Cage, where Balsam is half responsible for the situation he and Lure find themselves in.
Favorite places: Balsam loves his home, even though his curiosity of the world and travelling may contrast against it. Places like Coffcord’s study and his loft bedroom are near and dear to him, and there’s little he enjoys more than reading before the fire on a winter day. Their garden is also very special to him and he has spent hours tending to both herbs and produce.
Role model: Coffcord, naturally. However, he also admires Sir Morrick, and even looks up to Lure for his confidence and determination, even if he doesn’t always agree with him. Upon meeting Archer Yves, he becomes caught up in his stories and overall mysteriousness, beginning to idolize him.
Favorite foods: Roasted potatoes with herbs, breads with currants and raisins baked in, sweet syrups on said bread, and sugared plums.
Favorite book: He enjoys reading to expand his knowledge, but he also enjoys reading of magnificent feats- as long as these legends have some amount of truth to them.
Mode of transportation: Usually walking. Balsam doesn’t know much about riding horses and requires assistance when doing so.
Weapon: Usually chemical mixing is his weapon. Other than that, he might have a knife in his bag somewhere...
Smells like: herosmellslike.com claims Lure smells like ‘rope and regret’. Strangely effective!
How do they feel about love: Balsam believes strongly in familial bonds and, by the end of the first book, begins to believe equally in the bonds between friends and fellows. Numerous times he has fought through his own doubts because of these bonds, and they are one of his main drives. As for romantic love, Balsam has had little experience in it.
Least favorite color: Doesn’t really have one.
Home town/Where they live now: the Kingdom of Acalathoy
Makes a living by: Being the apprentice of Alchemist Coffcord.
Fears or phobias: Balsam has a distinct fear of losing control of a situation and it turning to a disaster. Minor fears of concocting the wrong chemicals and getting massive burns from it.
Race, ethnicity and nationality: Balsam was born in Acalathoy and, while tanned, is naturally Caucasian. Music they listen to: While Balsam likes most music, his favorite is lute music or other strummed string instruments.
Bad habits: The closest thing to a bad habit is that when Balsam gets anxious he chews an excessive amount of ginger and other roots to ease his nerves.
What turns them on: Balsam is both sides of the spectrum. He enjoys long conversations with exchanging ideas, but he also enjoys quiet moments where people can just be together and be content. What Balsam looks for in a partner is someone who shares interests enough that they can work together and remain fully engaged.
What turns them off: The only real turn-off Balsam would have is someone who discredits his work. Such as someone who doesn’t believe in science or medicine, or relies too much on superstition without being willing to learn.
If they transitioned from their world to ours, how would they react: It seems like, even with his anxiousness, Balsam would probably handle it a little easier. Largely because he can survive in the wild and is cautious enough to keep to himself. He might venture out more once seeing the wonders of technology.
Religious and to what extent? Any spiritual beliefs?: Balsam believes in a god but is not overly religious. He does not believe that science and religion contrast with each other.
Pet peeves: When Lure does something or refuses to do something even though it may be a detriment to his health. This particularly annoys Balsam since he is usually the voice of medical reason. He also dislikes when his cooking is criticized or when people act haughty around him, such as Yves’ occasional moments. As stated earlier, he is annoyed by people who blindly reject alchemy with little reason why.
Personal problems: The biggest one would be that even though he’s fit, he’s not exactly in perfect shape. His health is good, but he’s not not really athletic.
What ONE item would they take to an uninhabited island: His medical bag... And everything in it if he could sneak it by.
Outlook on life: An optimistic realist. Even though concerned and cautious, Balsam enjoys life and looks forward to continuing it.
Most important person in their life: Either Coffcord or Lure. Coffcord is naturally his mentor, who has raised him and taught him everything, but Lure is the one who propelled him into his first journey outside of Acalathoy, and has become his best friend in the process.
What was your character like as a child: Balsam was a quiet and studious child. What (if they can) does your character eat: Usually Coffcord and Balsam eat together, and usually it is simple, but not poor fair. Because of Coffcord’s means, they are kept well fed.
What is something other people assume about your character?: That he’s as mentally young as his age and title may imply.
Do they like the name they were given: Balsam doesn’t have any qualms with his name. It just is what it is.
Nervous habits: Grabs at his bag strap, rubs his hands together, obsessively chews pieces of ginger- he’s got a few of them.
Siblings: No.
Wears jewelry: No.
Have they ever wanted to commit suicide: No. Balsam’s had a mostly happy life.
Close friends: Lure and Balsam are very close, as explained earlier and in the Lure questionnaire. He also forms a friendship with Morrick once he’s able to get past the fact that he is a knight, eventually learning to treat him like a person instead of a nobleman. He forms a bond with Yves, whose personality conflicts with his own. He originally idolizes him, but as he sees more flaws he eventually begins to see him as a person, like with Morrick. First kiss? (when and with whom): None yet. I’ll keep you posted.
Views on gambling, lying, killing, etc…: Balsam doesn’t believe in doing so normally, but has shown that he is capable of committing petty crimes when desperate, even if the guilt then eats at him afterwards.
How much do they value money: Balsam is very frugal when it comes to managing funds that will need to last an entire trip. He is willing to let non-essential supplies stretch and finds ways to replace them without spending too many shillings.
Wants to get married: Yes, but it is not currently important to him.
Wants to have kids, raise a family: Yes, but specifically to take in an orphan as an apprentice like Coffcord did with him.
Sworn enemy: None.
Is their name a pun of anything: ‘Balsam’ is a resinous substance made by trees and plants and used to make medicines and oils. Which goes along with his frequent use of oils, powders, and herbs in his alchemy.
Anyone they really hate: Not really. He doesn’t hate easily.
Most traumatic experience: In A Fool’s Golden Cage, but I would rather not spoil.
Favorite holiday: New Years, though it is celebrated differently than our typical modern day holiday. Usually it involves baked sweets, lighting candles, and prayers at the crest of Midnight. Balsam has many fond memories of it.
Another character down! Hope you enjoyed!

(Originally posted on DA) Well, after a year of progress, tomorrow is the day that I finally, finally, publish my book! My book, my jester, out there on the market to parade around for everyone to see. Here's the premise:
The king is dead, the child princess has been stolen away, and the court jester is left bleeding and drowning in the moat: Castle Acalathoy has been dealt a mortal blow. With the only heir to the throne taken in the night, the fate of the kingdom is sealed. The soldiers have been slaughtered, the knights laid waste, and there is no hero foolish enough to go after the princess. But Jester Lure has survived, and he will not be detoured. Against all odds, the fate of the princess lies in the hands of her personal jester, a peculiar man who hides more than his face under his mask. He has nothing left to lose and no intention of turning back. He, along with a small group of similarly unlikely companions- an apprentice who is merely an extension of his master and a knight driven only by guilt- must risk their lives in a hopeless journey across a dangerous land. Wildlife running havoc, bandits, pale folk with saccharine smiles, and other dangers are waiting along their path. It is them against an unrelenting world, and the group must learn to function together if they plan on surviving. With tension within the group, inexperience, and a lack of even basic weapons, this is easier said than done. It’s foolish to believe that they can save the princess from a fate nearly worse than death, but a foolish endeavor is not yet a hopeless one, and their trials have only just begun. For the fate of the princess, for the fate of their lives, and all relying on a foolish endeavor.
The main characters consist of the Jester, the Apprentice, and the Knight as they attempt a reckless trek across the land to get to Olaylark, the kingdom where the princess has been taken to. The three have little experience doing anything of the sort. Even the Knight has spent most of his life dormant, as the kingdom he serves has never been attacked like this. They have extremely limited weapons and a finite amount of food, money, and supplies. Not to mention, Lure is carrying injuries from the attack as well. They really are a helpless bunch.
Jester Lure, as introduced in the synopsis, is a masked jester and the driving force behind the quest to Olaylark. His motives are simple enough: go for the princess and perhaps die trying, or stay in the doomed kingdom and be stripped of everything he had. Naturally, the chance that he'll succeed is more tempting than the possible reality that he will fail. Lure's best skill is perhaps how well he can slip into his place as a jester; whether it be to concoct a believable ruse, repurposing other skills for new situations, or just staying well-humored enough to make it through the day.
Apprentice Balsam has learned everything he knows from his master and does everything as his mentor has taught him to. Because of this, he steps in over his head and doesn't realize it until he's gasping for air. He knows the motions, he knows what he's supposed to do, and he knows how to weave his knowledge of alchemy and basic life skills into success. However, the real challenge is learning to do so without his mentor's constant guidance, and that's easier said than done when Balsam has yet to even establish himself as an individual.
Sir Morrick went from a well-respected knight to a war prisoner, and now has no idea where he stands. He knows he should feel guilty for his survival, that by all intents and purposes he failed his main goal, and so he accompanies the others on this hopeless quest. If not to earn back the last of his dignity, then simply because he has nowhere else to go. This is his final option, but that does not mean that Morrick intends to give up. He is just as determined to find the princess, and if that means turning against previous vows to do so then so be it.
There are also others they meet throughout their journey: a mysterious hunter with unclear motives, a proud ship captain and her salty crew, a caravan of enchanting, pale siblings, and rats. So, so many rats. The land of Durchnässt is known for many things, such as its flooded forests and plains and its many, successful kingdoms. Whether wealthy mining city or bay-side port, or pack of rats, most things thrive in this land... Or they were, until Olaylark took a bit more than its share.
The scaling is also perhaps a bit different than one would expect from a fantasy novel. These three are effectively trying to save the kingdom... But they have no army. They don't even have adequate weapons. They must be resourceful with what they can, for now even the seemingly smaller things are a real threat. Anything can kill them, whether it be the wildlife, the bandits, or the slightest taste of poison. This means that they also must learn how to work efficiently together... But this has its own set of risks. They're trying to rescue a child, so they can't afford... Distractions.
I do hope you consider reading my book! The book will be published on Kindle for $7.49 and in paperback for $9.49. It will be published tomorrow on Amazon- (unless Amazon wills it, since it can take three days to appear in the store) -and if you do read, please consider leaving an honest review so that the novel can circulate to more people.
Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy! Thanks for your time!

👀 Hey Vivianne! How do you like Lure’s new buddies? Are there any of them you’re particularly fond of or close to?
"Yes! Oh, very much so!
Sir Morrick is a gentleman and very kind, and he talks to me! He's not like those other knights who stand there and don't talk or do anything. Lure told me that's why they stand 'post', because they stand like wood posts... He might have been jesting with me.
Balsam is very kind too! Sometimes if I ask very politely, he plays with Lure and I. I don't think he's used to playing games though, but that's okay. If I teach him then maybe someday he'll teach me how to make magic potions.
Sir Yves raises hawks and he's a lot like them, quiet and very good at hunting. I don't see him very much. He lives with Coffcord and doesn't come to the castle a lot. Elia told me that he doesn't have any family, so maybe Coffcord adopted him too!"
- Princess Vivianne of Acalathoy
