The Struggle for Accessibility in Medical Buildings

"Just trying to have my brain MRI done, please. Accessibility is SUCH a huge issue, even in the medical buildings that we are designated to go to," expresses Rose. This heartfelt sentiment highlights the ongoing struggles faced by individuals with disabilities.

Despite designated disabled parking, the lack of a front door to the clinic and an elevator that opens directly into the scanning area complicate access. The process of obtaining a disabled placard is also cumbersome and slow, adding another layer of difficulty.

I'm very fortunate to have my partner and caregiver assist me with navigating curbs and accessing the building. But what about those who arrive alone or drive themselves?

This is the shizz that I live and cope with, and still do what I need to do as best as I can. #Fibromyalgia is a many-headed beast, a name given to a collection of over 200 symptoms, any permutation and combination of which can strike whenever they please. Sometimes it interferes with my life a lot; sometimes it interferes less; some days are better than others; but it is always there in some shape or form. These days, I'm grappling with a bad flare-up, but also need to fight through the pain, the burning, the brain fog, etc, and make deals, raise investments, wrestle with Imposter Syndrome and panic attacks at home and goats in the backseat of my car, and take care of the farm. I do have the privilege of a manual wheelchair and an electric wheelchair for such times, but the places where I need to go to get goats are not wheelchair-friendly -- the don't even have paved roads -- so I'm forced to leave all my mobility aids at home. 🤷 See, folks, #accessibility is important! Without it, life for many of us becomes much harder than it otherwise needs to be, y'know? I also have the privilege of a super-supportive spouse (unfortunately, a supportive spouse IS a privilege here 🤷); he drives me around to wherever I need to go and back, (mostly) without cribbing 😂, which makes things easier for me; because otherwise, I'd be stuck arguing with rickshaw- and cab-drivers; or @careempak Captains, who have honestly been getting loonier with time. So that's life these days.
