Rúben Dias x Model!Reader- Life in Manchester Headcannons
Warnings: Slight reference to sexual activity at the end and possible eating disorder (nothing triggering)
Enjoy guys 😉
Part 2 to Rúben Dias x Reader- Meeting Headcannons
• You never intended to become one of the most popular Manchester City WAGS.
• When Rúben signed with Manchester City you agreed to return with him to the UK- to the place where your Portuguese mother and British father live.
• You knew Bernardo from Rúben playing for Portugal. When he started going out with Inês you became besties and now are attached at the hip.
• When Carlota was born you became the best auntie ever!
• Double dates with Bernardo and Inês
• You’re close with all the WAGS but especially with Olivia, Isabel and Sasha. Inês, Olivia, Isabel, Sasha and you are notorious for your fun nights out which end up with your boyfriends picking you up.
• On Instagram, style accounts appear where your outfits from photoshoots, Rúben’s matches and fan photos are posted.
• Attending every single home game at The Etihad, often with Inês but sometimes other WAGS join you.
• Wearing Rúben’s shirt or something in Man City blue to show your support.
• Rúben and you are often called relationship goals; the strong, commanding footballer and the beautiful, clever model.
• When City won the treble you were crying with happiness for Rúben and the team.
• When all the the family members went on the pitch at the Champions League, Rúben just picked you up and kissed you in front of the whole world before embracing his mum, dad and brother.
• ‘I’ve never been prouder of you Ruby’
• ‘Te amo meu amor’
• ‘também te amo, Rúben’
• Rubén’s UCL medal takes pride of place on the sideboard in your apartment with his many other awards/trophies.
• Behind his awards is a large framed photo of your first Vogue cover hanging on the wall.
• ‘If I can have my football awards then you can have your first big magazine cover on the wall Gatinha’
• You were present when Rúben threw up in Jack’s mums bag. You’ve got good blackmail material now 😂
• While Rúben doesn’t drink, you love a fancy cocktail or champagne to celebrate a new photoshoot campaign or magazine cover.
• Rúben tries to convince you to drink less, he means well but it sometimes annoys you
• You both eat extremely healthily and go to the gym most days but Rúben makes you look like a couch potato sometimes.
• He’s a bit of a food critic, your cheat days often consist of things like pot noodles or iced coffees. Rúben thinks it’s a waste of calories and that you should eat something that isn’t just caffeine and chemicals.
• Rúben is also a critic of the model diet. He thinks that you don’t eat enough and is often encouraging you to eat more and telling you off when you don’t.
• You’re pushing your food around your plate. Food that Rúben cooked. His eyes are focused on you from across the table.
• ‘Not hungry?’ His brown eyes gaze at you ‘have you already eaten?’
• ‘I had some almonds for breakfast’
• He frowns deeply ‘you know that isn’t healthy meu amor’
• He may disapprove of your eating habits but he won’t shout at you about it.
• When Rúben is doing ‘homework’ by watching certain football matches for upcoming games, you sit with him. His arm is around you, with you curled up into his side.
• It often leads to neck kisses which lead to…your bedroom 🥰

"There's no clean right choice in real life. There's always a multitude of different choices and they all have their pros and cons" - HC
So, apparently, the immoral, narcissistic strategies used on this latest PR stunt were right to him. I hope he has more pros than cons' choices, for he seems to be entering a period of darkness in Hollywood.
His team did everything wrong. This, if there was really a professional PR team dealing with this circus, because, from what we've seen, it was a totally unprofessional shenanigan, typical from an amateur.
A slight PR embarrassing situation can turn a PR stunt in great damage, destroying an actor's future chances of work. A single slip can destroy years of effort in building an image.
That's what happened to Henry Cavill. He miscalculated risks. For less than this, other actors were banned, rejected by, avoided in Hollywood. They were put in the oven and there they stayed for years.
He should have done his homework before the test, worried and taken this matter with integrity and dignity, avoiding this circus from escalating. He should have taken accountability for the mistakes. Instead, he ran and hid in a shell.
He should have addressed the issue to regain the trust of his fans right after the first negative response to that sh**ty PR stunt, what he didn't do. He should have been transparent and open, instead of being dubious, faking what everyone knew was a staged plot.
He should have apologized for the outrage he caused. It would show seriousness and commitment to honouring the trust of his fandom. Instead, he addressed a FO post to fans on his IG.
The first pap walk was in the middle of COVID restrictions and, while people were locked at home suffering the loss of dear ones, he was rubbing his white privilege of importing a h**ker from the USA and pap walking her on the streets of the UK on people's faces.
He had no respect for the period people were going through nor people's pain and he underestimated fans' intelligence, not honouring their admiration and respect for him. The entire PR and damage control for it was abusive and disrespectful to fans.
He should have done a statement, keeping people informed, instead of gaslighting them with lies. He should have given fans feedback, instead of hiding and blocking them. He should have made changes, instead of working in favor of losing fans' trust. He learnt nothing from his mistakes.
He did the opposite of every single rule on how to deal with a PR crisis. They went the opposite way. That wasn't a mistake. That was intentional and stupid. Why? There are a few reasons: shame, pride, unprofessionalism, disrespect as an attempt to protect the reputation they wrongly think this woman has or simply idiocy.
And it went downhill. Of course! It couldn't go the other way, taking in consideration so many intentional mistakes and stupidies. What does he want? Burn his chances of being Highlander and Bond? He already lost Supes and TW (which gave him the prestige). Losing roles not guaranteed yet, will be a piece of cake. Because, apparently Hollywood is already putting him grounded.

The WoP EU/UK merge
Merging one WoX server into another within the same fandom and language might sound simple enough, but it's really not. Especially not two sites that are essentially two different versions of the same fictional universe. There's two of almost everything, but after the merge there will only be room for one. So how do you decide which professor of Muggle Studies will remain the professor of Muggle Studies, and which one will be fired? For the one that is fired, can they still claim to have worked as a professor of Muggle Studies up until that point, although the still hired professor will claim the same thing?
There are a thousand questions and only so many answers, which leaves people feeling confused and worried about the future.
Uncertainty can do a lot of harm, but it's harm that can be prevented by thorough planning, transparency and taking care to make the users feel seen and heard in the process.
_ _ _
The answers so far are as follows:
§ The merge will, if everything goes to plan, take place on 15-16th June.
§ EU staff members keep their positions, UK staff members lose their jobs in the transfer. The exception is the MoM and HM positions, where the UK site leaders will take over on EU and the current EU site leaders will step down.
§ UK accounts are transferred with their current stats (age, year, house, XP/level) and PT/BS, but will lose their inventory and homework history. Inventory will be reimbursed with IG currency. Pets are separate from inventory and will transfer automatically. Special items can be "transferred" on request (or more likely be manually replaced by MoM/HM)
§ Topics and wallposts from UK will be transferred to EU.
§ All lessons, library books and notice board history from UK will be lost in the transfer.
_ _ _
And then there are the questions yet to be answered...
... and a lack of answers is not a good look. In a community with a significant percentage of neurodivergents and/or mental health issues, a lack of answers causes uncertainty, stress and worry. This in turn causes frustration, which combined with all the losses makes for users who feel dismissed and unvalued. For those who have previously had negative experiences with WoX, this might be the thing that makes them quit for good. A lot of people will choose to just leave rather than figure out how to make things work on EU, that's almost certain.
This merge will inevitably cause upset. UK staff lose their jobs, EU staff lose their site leaders, UK users will lose their community and it's a stressful situation for everyone involved. A lot of that can't be helped, it just has to be done. All we can do is try to soften the blows and minimise the damage where we can by providing support, answers and information.

⸻ JOHN GALLAGHER JR. HE/HIM / have you ever heard of I WISH I COULD GO BACK TO COLLEGE by avenue q obc, well, it describes JAMES ‘JIMMY’ BRUMEIER to a tee! the thirty seven year old, and DESK CLERK was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say HE is more unproductive or more BOYISH instead? anyway, they remind me of crooked ties, coffee ring stains on a nice desk, unruly hair no matter how many times you comb it and never really wanting to grow up, maybe you’ll bump into them soon!
time in notting hill: ten years
The best word to describe Jimmy would be unmotivated. He never had much of a drive to do anything other than play video games or binge watch shows and movies. Growing up, it was like pulling teeth to try to get him to do his homework and participate in class, or even get a part time job because he really just didn't want to do it. Despite this, he didn't hate school; the structure was reassuring and helped keep him on a schedule despite the late nights doing whatever it was he wanted to do with his free time.
There were a number of reasons for Jimmy to show up to school every day - one of them being he had to, but the other was Yale Cameron. She was both his best friend and his longest relationship - the pair dated for two years, and there was no one he felt more comfortable or at ease around. He had been convinced for a while that she was his soul mate, and while that still rang true after they broke up, it was not in the way he had initially thought. However, the two became a packaged deal, rarely going anywhere without the other, and their closeness and lack of boundaries often made their respective dating life hard.
Everyone who knew him was only half shocked to hear he actually wanted to go to college - his lack of drive in school lead most people to believe that he'd graduate high school and wash his hands with schooling, but the idea of more personal freedom coupled with the structure Jimmy clung to was too enticing. He barely scraped by and managed to get into a state school, and the cycle started over - but this time he tended to skip more classes so he could party or sleep or play video games all day. He failed his first year, which wasn't a shock to anyone, but he didn't get kicked out either, so the cycle continued.
He did manage to graduate (a few semesters later than the peers he started with however) and spent the first six months doing nothing but buying lotto tickets and sitting around doing nothing, living close to campus because student housing was cheaper and he refused to move back home. This weirdly paid off, as Jimmy won the jackpot. Suddenly he had more money than he knew what he could or even should do with - so he decided that he should move to the UK because there was nothing tying him down (especially because Yale was moving with him - he wasn't going to go anywhere without his platonic life partner).
The move was surprisingly easy - though he kept the fact that he was now nearly a millionaire to himself. He decided to get a desk job to keep himself busy, and to have a means of income to at least explain where he got money to do stuff with. The structure of an office was good for him - he's too aimless without someone telling him what to do and when to do it - but despite being in a more 'grown up' environment, he was still stuck in a college boy mindset, and that was very evident from the way he ate, talked, and often dressed outside of the office. It was either charming or a huge turn off - Jimmy found there was rarely a middle ground.
He hasn't burned through too much of the money; rarely wanting to draw that much attention to himself or want to make big purchases, he still has about half of it after all this time, sitting in a savings account. Only the Cameron siblings know about it, as they're more or less his own siblings at this point. He could mature a little more if you asked anyone who knew him, but his personality is pleasant enough, eager to step up and help anyone who needs it with minimal complaining depending on the task, and sometimes his more immature outlook on life can remind people that not everything needs to be so serious all the time.

I never understood why it’s an F if he gets more than half out of 100? Unless it’s more than 100. If you get more than half the answers right how is it an F?
You must not be from America. Here, grading is fucked up.
Average American Grading Scale: A+- 97-100 A - 94-96 A- - 90-93 B- 80-89 C- 70-79 D- 60-69 F- 59 and under
And in some places in America it goes by a 7 point scale, so it’d be A - 100-93 B - 92-85 C - 84-78 D - 77-70 F - 69 and below
Now you understand why American kid’s feel like there’s no point to school. If you have a 100 question text, and get 79 of them correct, that’s a C. That mean’s your Average Intelligence on this particular subject. And it get’s even worse when you have only like… a 10 question quiz. If you get two wrong? that’s a B. 80 fucking %. Now tell me again why American school’s are easier?
No wait but whats the grading system in other countries?
UK Grading Scale
100-70: A
69-60: B
59-50: C
49-40: D
Below 40: F
next time you try to tell americans that we’re stupid
i’m gonna remind you
that our “average” is your “A”
#is that true? Yep I was shocked when I heard this in a different post but a Google search pulls up a ton of sites backing this up. Shit son I woulda passed College Algebra with an A in the UK. And I spent the end of the semester in perpetual fear that I would fail and have to retake the class.
And basically as an American you’re expected to get 80 or higher. Technically 70s are considered ‘average’ but there is such a level of pressure to get a B or higher, that Cs have become equal to Ds. Basically anything under 60 you might as well gotten a 0, and anything between 60-80 is considered practically failing. So basically schools have to be designed to make sure majority of students are getting 80s or higher on specific topics, which means you’re spending all your time going over a few choice facts a billion times and there is very little room to teach anything else. Which explains why American schools are of such low quality. The insane demand on the students ends up wrecking their education. Not only do you not have time to teach them anything, but they end up hating learning. Even outside of school your life is dedicated to memorizing these few dumb facts because your homework ends up taking hours of your time. A teacher from one subject says they expect you to spend 2 hours every night on their homework. And if you’re studying 5 subjects and they all demand that 2 hours? Good fucking luck, because if you don’t have straight all 80s or higher you’re not getting into a good college and college degrees have somehow become the minimum requirement for getting jobs.
I spent most of my junior year of high school in a state of constant panic that I was going to get a C in Honors Physics much less fail the class. If I got a C on my report card, I was grounded until the next one. I lost count of the times I’d wake up at five in the morning to take the early bus to go in for zero hour before school actually started for the day
File this under the exact reason so many Americans detest going to school.

She Works Hard for Your Money
Independent mortgage guru Katie Parsonage is based at Robert Leech. Katie is a mortgage adviser with the Mortgage Advise Bureau, the largest estate agent based mortgage brokers in the UK, and since 1995 has helped hundreds of people find the most suitable mortgage for them while making invaluable savings along the way. Here are her tips to ensure a smooth process and put you ahead of the game when buying…
Get good advice
Find an independent broker that you trust and feel comfortable working with – don’t forget you will be telling them some very personal information. Don’t just visit your bank as they may not have the best deals on the market and be aware that comparison websites may not show exclusive deals that brokers have access to.
Be prepared
Speak to a broker before you start looking at properties – you may find that borrowing is more affordable than you think. Being able to give a broker’s details to estate agents proves to them that you are a serious buyer who has done their homework. The agent will then be in a position to recommend you as a strong buyer to their vendor and this could make a difference if there are several offers on the same property.
What sort of mortgage deal is right?
Spend some time exploring all the different types of mortgages that are available and how they work. There will be a lot of decisions to be made concerning the term, fixed versus tracker rates, whether to use an “offset” or not – you will have your mortgage a long time and your broker should be more than happy to discuss everything with you.
What fees will you have to pay when you take out a mortgage?
Make sure you have a clear understanding of how much you will have to pay and when. Different lenders charge different fees, some of which you can add to the loan. Brokers will take these into account when recommending the best deals, sometimes the lowest rate is not the best deal when fees are taken into account.
Review your existing mortgage
Don’t forget about your mortgage once it’s all arranged, you should aim to review it 3 months before your deal is coming to an end to look at remortgage options or to ensure that you still get the best deal.
If you would like to discuss your mortgage with me, please call me on 07767 428580 and I will be happy to help.

Top 5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Hair Transplant Clinic in the UK
Hair loss can be a daunting experience, affecting confidence and self-esteem for both men and women. You're not alone if you've been struggling with thinning hair or bald spots. Many people are exploring hair transplant options as a solution to restore their mane. As interest in this life-changing procedure grows, so does the number of clinics offering these services across the UK.
Choosing the right hair transplant clinic is crucial to achieving successful results that meet your expectations. With various techniques available—like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)—and numerous factors influencing the decision-making process, you must do your homework before committing. Whether searching for a reputable UK hair transplant clinic in Manchester or Leeds or looking into specific treatments like PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy, understanding what matters most can make all the difference.

Let's dive into the top five factors when choosing a clinic for your hair restoration journey!
Factor 1: Reputation and Reviews
When considering a hair transplant clinic, reputation is paramount. You want to choose a facility known for delivering exceptional results. A strong reputation often comes from years of successful procedures and satisfied clients.
Look for online reviews and testimonials from previous patients. These insights can paint a clearer picture of what to expect regarding service quality and outcomes. Social media platforms are valuable resources, providing real-time feedback from individuals undergoing similar treatments.
Don't shy away from seeking recommendations from friends or family who have had positive experiences with specific clinics. Their firsthand accounts can guide you toward trustworthy options for the ideal UK hair transplant clinic.
Check if the clinic has certifications or accreditations that validate its credibility in the industry. A solid track record reflects an establishment's commitment to excellence in hair loss treatment for men and women alike.
Factor 2: Experience and Expertise of the Surgeons
The surgeons' experience and expertise play a crucial role when considering a hair transplant. You want professionals who have honed their skills over the years in the field.
Look for qualifications that showcase their training and certifications. Surgeons with specialised education in hair restoration techniques are often more adept at achieving natural-looking results.
Experience isn't just about years; it's also about volume. A surgeon who has performed hundreds or thousands of procedures will likely navigate challenges better than someone newer to the practice.
Review before-and-after photos of previous patients to assess quality. This visual evidence can offer insight into what you might expect from your procedure.
Communication is key as well. An experienced surgeon should be able to discuss options, address concerns, and set realistic expectations regarding outcomes and recovery times.
Factor 3: Technology and Techniques Used
When exploring hair transplant options, the technology and techniques used by a clinic are crucial. Advanced methods can significantly affect both results and recovery time.
FUE hair transplant is among the most popular. It involves extracting individual hair follicles from donor areas, minimising scarring and promoting natural growth patterns.
Another innovative option is PRP hair treatment. This technique utilises your blood to stimulate hair regrowth, making it ideal for those looking for non-surgical solutions alongside transplants.
A good clinic will stay updated with the latest advancements in these procedures. They should also clearly explain how their chosen techniques work and why they suit your specific needs.
Investing in a facility that uses state-of-the-art equipment can enhance your chances of achieving desired outcomes while ensuring safety throughout the process.
Factor 4: Cost and Financing Options
When considering a hair transplant, it's crucial to understand the costs involved. Prices can vary significantly between clinics and procedures. A thorough breakdown of what is included in the quoted fee will help avoid any surprises later.
Many UK hair transplant clinics offer different financing options. This flexibility allows patients to choose plans that suit their financial situation. Some clinics may provide interest-free payment plans, making treatment more accessible.
It's also wise to ask about hidden fees or additional charges for consultations or follow-up visits. Understanding the total cost upfront ensures you can make an informed decision without unexpected expenses.
Investing in your appearance is personal and often requires careful consideration of budget and results. Prioritise quality alongside affordability when exploring options for your journey towards regaining a fuller head of hair.
Factor 5: Consultation Process and Aftercare Services
The consultation process is your first glimpse into the clinic's professionalism. A thorough consultation should allow you to ask questions and voice any concerns regarding hair loss treatment for men or women. You want a team that listens, understands your needs, and provides personalised advice.
Aftercare services are equally crucial. Effective aftercare ensures that the results of procedures, such as FUE hair transplant techniques, are optimised. Look for clinics offering comprehensive post-operative care plans.
These should include follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address issues swiftly if they arise. Additionally, support options like PRP hair treatment can enhance recovery and regrowth.
A good clinic will keep communication lines open even after the procedure. Your journey doesn't end with surgery; it's vital to have ongoing access to expertise as you navigate through recovery and achieve the desired results.
Conclusion
Choosing the right hair transplant clinic is a critical step toward achieving your desired results. As you navigate options, remember to focus on reputation and reviews from past patients. This can provide valuable insights into the quality of care.
Assessing the experience and expertise of surgeons is equally essential. Skilled professionals will be equipped with knowledge that can significantly influence the success of your procedure.
Technology matters, too. Clinics that utilise advanced techniques like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) typically offer better outcomes and improved recovery times.
Cost shouldn't be overlooked but should not be the sole deciding factor. Look for clinics offering transparent pricing and financing options catering to various budgets.
Don't underestimate the importance of a thorough consultation process and aftercare services. A supportive clinic will guide you throughout your journey, ensuring optimal results long after surgery.
As you embark on this path towards hair regrowth—whether for men or women—consider these factors carefully to ensure you make an informed decision about where to seek treatment in the UK.

Understanding the Fundamentals of Indian Online Cricket Betting
Legality and Regulations
The legal landscape for online betting in India can be unclear. Online betting frequently operates in murky waters, even if state laws governing gaming differ. Many popular betting sites are licensed overseas, which invites both opportunities and risks. A 2023 report indicated that the online betting market in India is worth over $1 billion, reflecting a growing interest. However, players must engage in responsible gambling practices to avoid any legal trouble.
Types of Bets
Understanding the types of bets is crucial for beginners. Here are some common bet types:
Match Winner: Bet on which team will win the match.
Top Batsman: Wager on which player will score the most runs.
Total Runs: Bet on the total number of runs scored in a match.
Every kind of wager provides a unique way to participate in the game.
Odds and Probabilities
Odds indicate the likelihood of an event occurring. They also determine how much you can win. For example, if you place a bet with odds of 2.0 on a match winner and wager ₹100, your potential winnings would be ₹200 if your team wins. Making wise wagering choices requires an understanding of how odds are interpreted.
Choosing a Reputable Online Cricket Betting Site
Licensing and Security
Choosing a licensed and secure betting platform is crucial. Seek out websites overseen by reputable organizations like the Malta Gaming Authority or the UK Gambling Commission.. These licenses ensure that the platform adheres to strict standards for fair play and security.
Payment Methods
In India, you have various payment options:
UPI: A popular method for instant transactions.
Debit/Credit Cards: Widely accepted across platforms.
E-wallets: Options like Paytm and Neteller are commonly used.
Always check which payment method suits you best to ensure smooth deposits and withdrawals.

How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers
Some experts worry that teens are more anxious and have lower self-esteem because of social media and texting. There are key differences to socializing online. Teens miss out on things like body language and facial expressions. This can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It can also make talking in person feel more intimidating.
It is also common for kids to feel bad about themselves when they see everyone online looking perfect. Teens often try to compensate by sharing pictures that make them look perfect, too. Then, when their social media identity doesn’t match how they actually feel, they can end up feeling worse.
Parents can help by setting a good example of how to use tech. Try to give kids your full attention when you are with them, and establish tech-free zones in in the house and tech-free hours when no one is on their phones.
To help build self-esteem, get kids involved in something they’re interested in. When kids learn to feel good about what they can do instead of how they look and what they own, they’re happier.
Many parents worry about how exposure to technology might affect toddlers developmentally. We know our preschoolers are picking up new social andcognitive skills at a stunning pace, and we don’t want hours spent glued to an iPad to impede that. Butadolescence is an equally important period of rapid development, and too few of us are paying attention to how our teenagers’ use of technology—much more intense and intimate than a 3-year-old playing with dad’s iPhone—is affecting them. In fact, experts worry that the social media and text messages that have become so integral to teenage life are promoting anxiety and lowering self-esteem.
Young people report that there might be good reason to worry. A survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health asked 14-24 year olds in the UK how social media platforms impacted their health and wellbeing. The survey results found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness.
Indirect communication
Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied in the hours after school until way past bedtime. When they’re not doing their homework (and when they are) they’re online and on their phones, texting, sharing, trolling, scrolling, you name it. Of course before everyone had an Instagram account teens kept themselves busy, too, but they were more likely to do their chatting on the phone, or in person when hanging out at the mall. It may have looked like a lot of aimless hanging around, but what they were doing was experimenting, trying out skills, and succeeding and failing in tons of tiny real-time interactions that kids today are missing out on. For one thing, modern teens are learning to do most of their communication while looking at a screen, not another person.
“As a species we are very highly attuned to reading social cues,” says Catherine Steiner-Adair, EdD, a clinical psychologist and author of The Big Disconnect. “There’s no question kids are missing out on very critical social skills. In a way, texting and online communicating—it’s not like it creates a nonverbal learning disability, but it puts everybody in a nonverbal disabled context, where body language, facial expression, and even the smallest kinds of vocal reactions are rendered invisible.”
Lowering the risks
Certainly speaking indirectly creates a barrier to clear communication, but that’s not all. Learning how to make friends is a major part of growing up, and friendship requires a certain amount of risk-taking. This is true for making a new friend, but it’s also true for maintaining friendships. When there are problems that need to be faced—big ones or small ones—it takes courage to be honest about your feelings and then hear what the other person has to say. Learning to effectively cross these bridges is part of what makes friendship fun and exciting, and also scary. “Part of healthy self-esteem is knowing how to say what you think and feel even when you’re in disagreement with other people or it feels emotionally risky,” notes Dr. Steiner-Adair.
But when friendship is conducted online and through texts, kids are doing this in a context stripped of many of the most personal—and sometimes intimidating—aspects of communication. It’s easier to keep your guard up when you’re texting, so less is at stake. You aren’t hearing or seeing the effect that your words are having on the other person. Because the conversation isn’t happening in real time, each party can take more time to consider a response. No wonder kids say calling someone on the phone is “too intense”—it requires more direct communication, and if you aren’t used to that it may well feel scary.
If kids aren’t getting enough practice relating to people and getting their needs met in person and in real time, many of them will grow up to be adults who are anxious about our species’ primary means of communication—talking. And of course social negotiations only get riskier as people get older and begin navigating romantic relationships and employment.
Cyberbullying and the imposter syndrome
The other big danger that comes from kids communicating more indirectly is that it has gotten easier to be cruel. “Kids text all sorts of things that you would never in a million years contemplate saying to anyone’s face,” says Donna Wick, EdD, a clinical anddevelopmental psychologist. She notes that this seems to be especially true of girls, who typically don’t like to disagree with each other in “real life.”
“You hope to teach them that they can disagree without jeopardizing the relationship, but what social media is teaching them to do is disagree in ways that are more extreme and do jeopardize the relationship. It’s exactly what you don’t want to have happen,” she says.
Dr. Steiner-Adair agrees that girls are particularly at risk. “Girls are socialized more to compare themselves to other people, girls in particular, to develop their identities, so it makes them more vulnerable to the downside of all this.” She warns that a lack of solid self-esteem is often to blame. “We forget that relational aggression comes from insecurity and feeling awful about yourself, and wanting to put other people down so you feel better.”
Peer acceptance is a big thing for adolescents, and many of them care about their image as much as a politician running for office, and to them it can feel as serious. Add to that the fact that kids today are getting actual polling data on how much people like them or their appearance via things like “likes.” It’s enough to turn anyone’s head. Who wouldn’t want to make herself look cooler if she can? So kids can spend hours pruning their online identities, trying to project an idealized image. Teenage girls sort through hundreds of photos, agonizing over which ones to post online. Boys compete for attention by trying to out-gross one other, pushing the envelope as much as they can in the already disinhibited atmosphere online. Kids gang up on each other.
Adolescents have always been doing this, but with the advent of social media they are faced with more opportunities—and more traps—than ever before. When kids scroll through their feeds and see how great everyone seems, it only adds to the pressure. We’re used to worrying about the impractical ideals that photoshopped magazine models give to our kids, but what happens with the kid next door is photoshopped, too? Even more confusing, what about when your own profile doesn’t really represent the person that you feel like you are on the inside?
“Adolescence and the early twenties in particular are the years in which you are acutely aware of the contrasts between who you appear to be and who you think you are,” says Dr. Wick. “It’s similar to the ‘imposter syndrome’ in psychology. As you get older and acquire more mastery, you begin to realize that you actually are good at some things, and then you feel that gap hopefully narrow. But imagine having your deepest darkest fear be that you aren’t as good as you look, and then imagine needing to look that good all the time! It’s exhausting.”
As Dr. Steiner-Adair explains, “Self-esteem comes from consolidating who you are.” The more identities you have, and the more time you spend pretending to be someone you aren’t, the harder it’s going to be to feel good about yourself.
Stalking (and being ignored)
Another big change that has come with new technology and especially smart phones is that we are never really alone. Kids update their status, share what they’re watching, listening to, and reading, and have apps that let their friends know their specific location on a map at all times. Even if a person isn’t trying to keep his friends updated, he’s still never out of reach of a text message. The result is that kids feel hyperconnected with each other. The conversation never needs to stop, and it feels like there’s always something new happening.
“Whatever we think of the ‘relationships’ maintained and in some cases initiated on social media, kids never get a break from them,” notes Dr. Wick. “And that, in and of itself, can produce anxiety. Everyone needs a respite from the demands of intimacy and connection; time alone to regroup, replenish and just chill out. When you don’t have that, it’s easy to become emotionally depleted, fertile ground for anxiety to breed.”
It’s also surprisingly easy to feel lonely in the middle of all that hyperconnection. For one thing, kids now know with depressing certainty when they’re being ignored. We all have phones and we all respond to things pretty quickly, so when you’re waiting for a response that doesn’t come, the silence can be deafening. The silent treatment might be a strategic insult or just the unfortunate side effect of an online adolescent relationship that starts out intensely but then fades away.
“In the old days when a boy was going to break up with you, he had to have a conversation with you. Or at least he had to call,” says Dr. Wick. “These days he might just disappear from your screen, and you never get to have the ‘What did I do?’ conversation.” Kids are often left imagining the worst about themselves.
But even when the conversation doesn’t end, being in a constant state of waiting can still provoke anxiety. We can feel ourselves being put on the back burner, we put others back there, and our very human need to communicate is effectively delegated there, too.
What should parents do?
Both experts interviewed for this article agreed that the best thing parents can do to minimize the risks associated with technology is to curtail their own consumption first. It’s up to parents to set a good example of what healthy computer usage looks like. Most of us check our phones or our email too much, out of either real interest or nervous habit. Kids should be used to seeing our faces, not our heads bent over a screen. Establish technology-free zones in the house and technology-free hours when no one uses the phone, including mom and dad. “Don’t walk in the door after work in the middle of a conversation,” Dr. Steiner-Adair advises. “Don’t walk in the door after work, say ‘hi’ quickly, and then ‘just check your email.’ In the morning, get up a half hour earlier than your kids and check your email then. Give them your full attention until they’re out the door. And neither of you should be using phones in the car to or from school because that’s an important time to talk.”
Not only does limiting the amount of time you spend plugged in to computers provide a healthy counterpoint to the tech-obsessed world, it also strengthens the parent-child bond and makes kids feel more secure. Kids need to know that you are available to help them with their problems, talk about their day, or give them a reality check.
“It is the mini-moments of disconnection, when parents are too focused on their own devices and screens, that dilute the parent-child relationship,” Dr. Steiner-Adair warns. And when kids start turning to the Internet for help or to process whatever happened during the day, you might not like what happens. “Tech can give your children more information that you can, and it doesn’t have your values,” notes Dr. Steiner-Adair. “It won’t be sensitive to your child’s personality, and it won’t answer his question in a developmentally appropriate way.”
In addition Dr. Wick advises delaying the age of first use as much as possible. “I use the same advice here that I use when talking about kids and alcohol—try to get as far as you can without anything at all.” If your child is on Facebook, Dr. Wick says that you should be your child’s friend and monitor her page. But she advises against going through text messages unless there is cause for concern. “If you have a reason to be worried then okay, but it better be a good reason. I see parents who are just plain old spying on their kids. Parents should begin by trusting their children. To not even give your kid the benefit of the doubt is incredibly damaging to the relationship. You have to feel like your parents think you’re a good kid.”
Offline, the gold standard advice for helping kids build healthy self-esteem is to get them involved in something that they’re interested in. It could be sports or music or taking apart computers or volunteering—anything that sparks an interest and gives them confidence. When kids learn to feel good about what they can do instead of how they look and what they own, they’re happier and better prepared for success in real life. That most of these activities also involve spending time interacting with peers face-to-face is just the icing on the cake.

After a placement, our commitment to families continues. Hamilton-Wallis provides post-placement support to ensure that both families and nannies are happy in their roles. This support includes regular follow-ups and an open line of communication for any adjustments or questions, ensuring a successful long-term relationship between families and their nanny.
With Hamilton-Wallis, families across the UK can be confident they are working with the best nanny services in the UK. We strive to make every family feel supported in their journey of finding the right caregiver. From the initial consultation to post-placement follow-ups, Hamilton-Wallis is there to ensure your children are in the most capable, caring hands.
