I need a fic where Ghost and Soap are on the run but like, framed and on the run.

They're on an assignment, just the two of them, to co-lead a team for the prevention of assassination for some big-name politician (dunno, I like to think this would happen either in usa or in the uk...) and it's all done and they're about to pack their shit and go back to base when Soap gets an encrypted call from Price to tell him that a video of Ghost killing the same big-name politician is on the telly

It's not Ghost, obviously, but it's someone of Ghost's posture, in Ghost's gear and Ghost's mask.

Also obviously, Soap doesn't believe it.

They get surrounded pretty fast by the local SWAT-like team and Soap makes Ghost use him as a hostage so they can escape with a minimal amount of maiming -- Soap is pretty sure Ghost could escape on his own, but it'd be a bloody mess that would follow him after he was proven to be framed.

Of course, Ghost tries to get Soap to leave once they're out of the danger zone. He does not.

Cue Ghost and Soap on the run while Price, Gaz and Lasewell try to find out who is framing him.

Simon's existence was erased so much that there are no pictures of him anywhere so instead, his APB has a sketch and a description. Problem is, the scars on his face were included, and way too characteristic to miss them (whether it's the glasgow smile or other scars, dunno, but you get my point). At first, it's really hard to move around because scars/mask + Simon being like 6'4 and built like a tank scream 'notice me'. Simon grows out a beard - it's red-ish blond colour so he ends up dying his hair red too. He absolutely doesn't care but Soap mourns because he's barely started being able to see Simon's face and hair and now it's all changed up.

Soap doesn't have an APB at first, but after a couple of days he is named as complicit (because he's seen helping Ghost run) and his photo is out. He has to shave the mohawk because it's too eye-catching (he's fucking bald and he hates it). He has to rein in his accent because he is described as glasgowian scottish. He can't call his maw so he sends her a random postcard he picked up a few towns ago and sends a short and cryptic message, hoping she believes he's not a terrorist.

Soap also finds out Ghost knows way too many shady people and knows way too easily where to look for even more shady people if he needs something the former people don't have. They steal shit out of necessity, often clothes and food, but sometimes they pickpocket cards and wallets. Some days they sleep in the car, some days they stop at questionable motels or hostels, and some days they don't sleep at all. They have burner phones but don't contact Price at all.

There would be a mandatory 'taking care of each others' wounds' scene (no bandages, please, you rarely use bandages in healthcare nowadays) after a dangerous run-in, a mandatory 'pretend to be a couple to lose the trail' and after that, an awkward 'there was only one bed' scene where things happen for the first time and they have a sloppy handjob or two.

They're probably trying to escape the country but can't do it via air because of the APBs and have to make their way to some shady port and even shadier ferry or cargo ship that won't run their fake passports in the system if they pay well enough.

Ghost is surprising Soap once again with an off-shore bank account and a knowledge of whichever country they're in's language. They move somewhere less crowded but not small enough that two Brits would be weird. Some people refer to Ghost as Soap's husband.

Hi, so as a fellow gender critical, I've been feeling conflicted about the recent ruling in the UK.

On one hand I understand the need for the legal definition of man and woman to be based in biology and I support it.

However some implications of the ruling have been unsettling to me. For example, the strip search stuff. While I don't think a female person should be forced to strip search a male person or vice versa, I feel genuinely bad for dysphoric males who may have had bad experiences with other men. And also, the police is just infamously... Not nice in every country lol. Towards anyone. I also saw someone point out that if a male police officer accuses a cis woman of being a trans woman, she'd have to be strip searched by a man. I'm not sure how possible that is of happening (like what are the logistics or procedures), but honestly it seems to be a pretty valid point.

I think it all comes down to how individual situations are handled. I think you're right that with this legislation, and other anti-transition legislation around the world, there will inevitably be harm done to androgynous women and to traumatized males who have transitioned.

On the one hand, changing policies so that everyone is legally defined by their birth sex would be a really good thing. That would eliminate the possibility of women being harmed in these cases, because our ID could be used to accurately show our biological sex. I also think that not having the option of legally changing sex would help to discourage people from transitioning.

But on the other hand, those who have transitioned fully are then left with difficulties in their lives due to these legal changes, and I don't think that would always be fair.

I'm completely against transition, and my priority is first and foremost to protect women. But I also respect the cases where for example, a boy was transitioned at a young age (Jazz Jennings is a perfect example) where treating him legally as a woman would actually make more sense for his well being.

I think it's important for people making these legal decisions at the high level to take some level of nuance into account, for example by treating cases of child transition the same way we treat people with certain rare DSDs, who were assigned a different sex at birth than they live as later on.

There's no easy answers. Ultimately I support legislation that will protect women's spaces and protect women's autonomy and choice. Let women make the choice at an individual level if they want to strip search someone who appears to be a dysphoric transitioned male.

i've been receiving a few replies on the topic so i'll make a post about it again. i've jumped back into dq10! yes, the japan-only mmo! yes, you can play it too!

there's a free trial with the base game and the first expansion (version 1 and 2) albeit with some restrictions like a level limit, not being able to use the nearby chat (there are a few quests this makes uncompletable but it's not a big deal), and not being able to use the traveller's bazaar to buy and sell with other players.

i'm not affiliated with anyone who makes any tools or guides and don't know them. it's a little outdated but there's a bunch of information over at https://dqxabbey.com/ that's take you through making a japanese square enix account, activating the free trial, and installing the game. then using a translated version of the launcher and config program and installing dqx clarity which replaces story text and certain terms like monster names with fan translated versions, and runs the rest of the text through a machine translation and injects it into the game. if you really like it, they also have guides for buying the game, buying a subscription, and buying from the dq10 shop. i own the game myself now and can help answer questions about that.

bear in mind: the game kicks you out if you try to connect from outside japan. several years ago they started allowing connections from the us (maybe all of north america? idk) since western fans were finding ways to play anyway. however, i live in the uk so i still get kicked so i have to use a vpn. dqx abbey mentions proton vpn which has a free version so i use that sometimes. proton vpn used to let you at least choose from the free servers. it now auto-assigns one, you can still click 'change server' a few times until you get one in japan or the us but it will time you out if you do it too many times. you may have to sort out another vpn for yourself.

prepping for new year

so i'm starting my second year of university doing biblical studies and theology soon, and doing so i have to be prepared because spiritually i am a boy scout.

notion is close to being done! when i get more information about my assignments i'll add more to it and i'll also be able to change the layout to fit the focus of my modules.

i've got a journal type thing that i've decorated to be my centre of operations. i like to have a book that i can put admin stuff like key dates, assignments, to do lists and module information to help me keep everything organised. i also like to have a place to put my post-it notes, as otherwise my desk becomes a literal mosaic of various luminous colours covered in all my scribbles, so this book helps me keep everything i need to remember and do in one place.

okay i have a confession - i have an unhealthy stationery collecting habit. i have hundreds of pens, a lot of different types of notepads and so many highlighters. an absolutely obscene very cool and normal amount of highlighters. organising them is my idea of a wild night out - except it's a nerdy night in where i sort all of my pens into three categories and pack them into separate pencils cases. in preparing for uni, i have done this organising for my pens, etc, and i've also collected my paper resources.

have you seen that vaguely problematic meme that's like 'i have two wolves inside me'? well that's me but one wolf says 'type all your notes' and the other wolf says 'handwrite your notes.' i can never stick to one type of notes and it is the bane of my existence. to try to minimise resistance when it comes to note-taking, i've got myself a few notepads that i tear paper out and file it away, along with my notion set-up, and google docs. i've found that handwritten notes work best for when i'm brainstorming, making notes on sources for assignments, and times when i want to draw diagrams, mind maps or messy notes that have lots of connections between concepts.

textbooks bought, bank account cries. (if you're in the uk i recommend an online second hand bookstore called world of books that has a lot of textbooks that are uni level and is way more affordable than buying them new or from your university)

Hi anon, I want you to know your not failing academically at all. And your not being overdramatic or dickish.

I know that my input here is entirely unwarranted but I felt the need to assure you because I know that shit is hard. I don't know what year your in but I want you to know that you aren't failing. I'm in second year of my degree and I'm behind on 4 weeks of readings and I have missed a few classes here and there. Which considering in first year I had 100% attendance freaked me out, but taking a step back and thinking for a sec it wasn't the end of the world and it isn't for you either. Uni does feel quite isolating a lot of the time, hell my chronic loneliness is worse than ever and I have a girlfriend for fuck sake. Its the way its set up,but if your friends are good ones, ask if you can talk to them, and if not, as a UK student I am always happy to lend an ear and encourage you to go get up and eat and study if you need. Your not alone I promise.

Anyway, I'm always here if you need anon, your doing great just talking about it and I'm proud of you. You've got this. Go to the shops and get a few bits and bobs that are easy to cook because a real meal might help.

I second this. Ambrose is right. You’re close to the situation now so you’re still processing it. But once you’ve had time to clear your mind, you’ll see that missing a lecture is okay. I get it. I started my undergrad an obsessive stickler and by the end of it I was just like “they’re lucky I’m even showing up at all, lol.”

Also, I know that you said you don’t feel close enough to your uni friends to talk to them about stuff, but have you considered getting, like, an accountability buddy? You don’t have to confide in them about how you’re feeling/ why if you’re not comfortable. But, you could ask if any of your friends would like to do a check-in a few times a day/week/ whatever works best for y’all.

Like, with my ADHD and depression and shit, I find that I’m most motivated when I have a deadline. Not one that I set for myself cuz I can easily just change that deadline. I have to feel like someone else is depending on me to meet the deadline. So, I’ve started asking to meet with my dissertation committee to like do a check in and quick progress report. With those meetings looming over me, I feel the need to have something to show them, which forces me to do SOMETHING. It’s not a perfect system but it’s better than nothing lol.

You can find a friend to meet and study with or like hang out once a week get some coffee or a drink and tell each other what you’ve been up to or what your goals are for the week. Not to shame or police each other. But to commiserate and encourage one another? It may not be a good system for you. Everyone’s different. So like whatever works is always going to be the best option. But sometimes you gotta try out a bunch of approaches before you land on something.

RECENT ECOMMERCE NEWS, RESOURCES AND STUDIES, EARLY JULY 2023

As expected when I posted the recent Etsy and SEO news update in June, I didn't get much time during my road trip to work on the other portion. So here it is, covering ecommerce sites, social media, content marketing and lots of other things small and microbusinesses might need to know.

I've also updated my Tumblr theme to make it easier to read and more accessible overall. Please let me know what you think!

SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site

Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)

You can now pay for a verified Meta account, and unlike Twitter, they actually verify your ID. 

Speaking of Twitter, Meta’s copycat app Threads took off rapidly, hitting over 100 million signups in the first week. 

If you have a Facebook or Instagram Shop, note that many countries will need to use Meta’s checkout as of April 24 2023.  While the US is one of those countries, the following places will not have to change anything at this moment: “Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, U.K. and Ukraine”.

Meta is pulling all news content in Canada after a new law passed that makes platforms pay media sources for their content. Google followed. 

LinkedIn

LinkedIn recently changed its algorithm, and is giving more weight to people you follow, and to “knowledge and advice”.

Make sure you are using LinkedIn content analytics to see how your posts are performing. The company released some tips on how to get more views and interaction on your ads and posts. 

Pinterest

Pinterest is introducing Amazon ads that lead directly to Amazon so browsers can buy there. This is expected to take a few years to fully roll out. 

The Shuffles feature is particularly popular with Generation Z women. 

Reddit

Yes, you can use Reddit to promote your business, but it is tricky. “It’s perfectly fine to be a Redditor with a website; it’s not okay to be a website with a Reddit account.”

TikTok

TikTok is selling its own products through the app, called “Trendy Beat", although this is only happening in the UK so far. The items seemed to be based on trending videos. 

TIkTok is the latest to test searching by image, in its Shop feature. 

Twitter

The Twitter algorithm now promotes Elon Musk’s tweets above all others. Yes, really. 

YouTube

YouTube ended Stories on June 26, but plans on doing more with Shorts in the future. 

ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS (minus social media)

General

Handmade alternative marketplace Artisans Cooperative has settled on its organisational structure now that they are moving forward with incorporating the co-op, and enrolling new members. Check their blog for all announcements on their plans. 

A new California initiative involves both ecommerce and brick and mortar businesses to help track down stolen items. Each site agrees to “assign staff and tools—dedicate webpage, online portal, or point of contact—to address concerns of theft that come in from retails or law enforcement, and to monitor listings “to affirmatively prevent and detect” organized crime.”

50% of online shopping trips start at Amazon, amazingly enough. Google comes in second. After peaking last year, TikTok’s share of product searches has dropped. 

Many merchants are reconsidering their return policies, and even free shipping. 

Amazon

Some Amazon sellers had huge issues with verifying their information to comply with the INFORM Act. The deadline for completing verification was July 7, after which Amazon will place a hold on all payments. 

Amazon will now charge US buyers for returns to UPS stores. 

Many backpacks made for adults were removed from Amazon automatically, and sellers were told they needed to show proof the packs had met children’s safety standards. 

BigCommerce

BigCommerce has followed Shopify in raising fees for the same amount, although existing users didn’t see the increase until June 1. As with Shopify, site owners can keep their current rate by opting for the annual package. 

eBay

If you are worried about eBay showing your home address to prospective buyers (due to the INFORM Act), you can apply for an exception. 

Ebay international shipping is available to US-based stores now, but there are a lot of complaints. Other recent eBay announcements and plans are discussed here in coverage of the summer Seller Update. 

Sales on eBay continue to drop, as do buyers. Here’s coverage of the 4th quarter report written for sellers, and the 1st quarter 2023.

eBay is now offering Canadian collectible sellers a new “Expedited Lite” Canada Post rate that costs as little as $5.85 to send 200 grams from Toronto to Yellowknife. Tracking and $100 insurance are included. [Attention other platforms - Canadians need these cheap rates!]

Poshmark

Poshmark now operates in the United Kingdom. 

Poshmark joined the vast majority of large ecommerce sites in the past year by laying off employees, although the reported numbers were just 2% of the workforce. 

Shopify 

After making big moves to enter the fulfillment market, Shopify sold off the logistics network to Flexport, which it will continue to work with, as well as owning 13% of Flexport’s stock. 

Shopify is resisting a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) request for 6 years of tax records for 121,000 stores. Note that the CRA must get a judge to approve such a request, which they filed for in April 2023. 

Shopify managed to beat the market estimates for the 4th quarter 2022, but predicts growth will continue to slow

There are ways to make your Shopify site more accessible for various disabilities; for some larger merchants, this is a legal requirement.

All Other Marketplaces

Bonanza is trying to improve its shipping label options, with the first step being decreasing the cost of USPS labels. It also now has a synced eBay importer, and is expanding its loan program to more sellers. 

Michael's has finally opened its maker supply online marketplace to third-party sellers. While this initial group of merchants was invited, the company is now accepting applications from experienced ecommerce merchants. Fees are a flat 15% commission, so no monthly subscriptions, listing fees or even payment processing fees (apparently). There is also a Shipstation integration. This could be a good channel for high-volume supply sellers who make/design their own products, especially if they work in a niche Michael’s doesn’t already service. Note that their makers website that would compete directly with Etsy is now taking a waitlist. 

Kohl’s opened a third-party marketplace, which includes their loyalty program benefits for buyers. 

All Other Website Builders

Squarespace bought Google Domains, but Google is still a domain registrar, and this should not affect your Google rankings. 

Payment Processing

Apple is very late to the buy-now-pay-later game, introducing Apple Pay Later for some users. 

Shipping

There is a UPS strike looming; the union contract expires August 1. This could not only affect businesses who ship products via UPS, but also those of us who order supplies etc. 

Also note that the port workers in British Columbia are on strike as of July 1. “Analysts have said a strike could have a significant impact on worldwide shipping and the Canadian economy. According to the Maritime Employers Association's website, its members contribute $2.7 billion to the national GDP and handled roughly 16 per cent of Canada's total traded goods worth $180 billion in 2020.”

Chinese ecommerce businesses could lose their US tariff exemption, which allows companies in China to ship to the US cheaply. The bill is not yet law. 

USPS raised stamp prices and combined several services into the new USPS Ground Advantage plan, as of July 9.

(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies) 

Is your small business making some common content marketing mistakes? 5 frequent errors and their solutions. 

Email welcome pages are a good way to increase sales from your list. “Imagine a shopper subscribes and is sent immediately to a page that, first, shares the discount code and, second, includes a short (30-second) welcome video that explains how to apply the code — without having to check email.”

ONLINE ADVERTISING (NOT SOCIAL MEDIA OR ECOMMERCE SITES)

Advertising through “retail media” (such as Amazon) will probably be greater than television ad revenue by 2028. “Retailers from Amazon, Walmart and Target to grocers such as Carrefour, Ahold Delhaize, Tesco and Sainsbury's are working aggressively to attract big advertisers to their websites” which could constitute more than 15% of all advertising spend by 2028.

Google’s Merchant Center will be getting easier to use next year, with the introduction of Merchant Center Next. Looks like complicated product feeds will be a thing of the past. 

Google Ads users are encouraged to import the conversion info from Google Analytics 4, to potentially improve ad performance. 

STATS, DATA, TRACKING 

Many sites are incorrectly reporting visits as direct when they actually come from sources such as social media; here’s a study showing how that can break down. 

Google’s latest instructions for migrating from Google’s Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4 even includes videos. If you don’t like Google’s explanation, here is another good tutorial [video and transcript] And here is a detailed outline of how to track organic search traffic in GA4, and how to set up site search.  Don’t worry if you haven’t migrated your account yet - although it will not collect new data starting some time after July 1, 2023, Google will transition the account to GA4 for you, and will also let you download your old Universal Analytics data for the next year. If you didn’t update to GA4 yourself, you are in the majority of website owners. 

Once you do start with GA4, make sure to connect with the Search Console and activate reports. There are also some reports you cannot get with GA4, but this article explains what you can come close to replicating from the old version. 

You can now move all of your Google Search Console data into Google’s BigQuery, which is great for really large sites. If you struggle to digest the info provided by Google Search Console, then you might be interested in a few integrations to make things easier. Some are even free!

Consumers are always changing how they shop and buy; here’s some data from the end of last year, explaining that buying through social media is slowly growing, among other points. Also, “42% of consumers have chosen a product based on it being made by a small business in the last three months, up 8% from May 2022.” Hubspot also released more data on the social media angle of the research, giving reasons why some buyers are still hesitant. 

US ecommerce sales were up 3% in the first 3 months of 2023. The total was $272.6 billion.
