Who was the WTEFLAC – Q&A
Tumblr media
As a leading accreditation service for the TEFL and TESOL sector, the WTEFLAC helped raise overall standards in the sector.
The World TEFL Accrediting Commission was there to help those who wanted to teach English as a foreign language find high-quality and reputable providers who could help them fulfil their professional aspirations. In this article, we’ll answer a few questions about what the company was, how it worked, and its lasting legacy.
What was the WTEFLAC’s mission?
The WTEFL set out to raise overall standards within the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Foreign Language) sectors. Its founders recognized a problem in the sector in that there were plenty of providers but not many regulatory methods to ensure they met minimum standards. Therefore, the company drew up a code of conduct against which they would assess all providers.
What did the code of practice state?
The code of practice represented a set of qualities that the WTEFLAC believed all providers should be expected to meet. Among its requirements was that all teachers should be highly qualified with at least three years of experience teaching English as a foreign language. Courses should also be well structured with clear criteria for assessing the performance of the students. As long as they satisfied these requirements it would have to lead to a professionally recognised process.
How did the WTEFLAC work?
The WTEFLAC had an accreditation board of experts who would review all applications. If a company wanted to be accredited by the WTEFLAC it would submit details of the company, outline its plans, and explain why it believed it met the standards required of a TEFL provider.
The board would assess the application against the criteria set out in the code of practice. Only when they were fully satisfied that the provider had met these requirements would the application be approved.
When additional information was needed, the company would often request further details and arrange a meeting so they could see the provider in action. This was a chance to measure the company’s claims against the actual service students would experience.
How can you tell if a company has been accredited
Once approved TEFL providers would be allowed to display the WTEFLAC logo on its website and all marketing materials. You can also see a list of all providers accredited by the WTEFLAC on its website.
How did the WTEFLAC help?
The WTEFLAC’s primary mission was to help people looking to find a TEFL or TESOL course. However, the process was also immensely useful for the companies it accredited. This logo would verify that the company could meet minimum standards giving them an important point of differentiation over the competition.
Furthermore, the process of accreditation was a good opportunity to review their practices and make their own improvements. By looking at themselves against the code of practice companies could carry out an internal audit and find new ways to provide more value for their students.
Accreditation services such as this perform a valuable role in the online world. They cut through marketing hype and give an objective view of a company’s services. Doing so raises standards in the TEFL sector and brings more choices to consumers.
