An 11 square miles of land in Arizona is in jeopardy of transforming into a mine by the company Rio Tinto, which blew up a 46,000 year old Aboriginal site. 【美容業界×SDGs】美容業界の「持続可能性」を高める3つの鍵②

前回の記事では、特に美容業界と関わりが深い3つのSDGsゴールのうち、ゴール5「ジェンダー平等を実現しよう」について詳しく紹介しました。

今回は、

・ゴール12：つくる責任 つかう責任 ・ゴール14：海の豊かさを守ろう

の2つについて詳しく見ていきましょう。

ゴール12：「つくる責任 つかう責任」

ゴール12「つくる責任 つかう責任」では、持続可能な消費と生産パターンの確保がテーマに掲げられています。

国際連合広報センターが発表した「持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）報告2021（全文）」では、全世界のマテリアル・フットプリントは、2000年から2017年までに70%も増加していると言及しています。

「マテリアルフットプリント」とは、その国において消費された天然資源量を表す指標で、原料の採掘から加工・利用・廃棄に至るまで世界のどこでどれだけ環境に負荷を与えてきたかを土地面積でとらえるものです。

持続可能な消費と生産への道に必要なのは、

①廃棄物と汚染の削減・排除 ②製品と材料を使用し続けるように設計されたエコノミーアプローチ

である、と上述の報告の中でも言われています。

昨今認知度が高まりつつある「エシカル」というキーワード。美しさや清らかさといったブランドイメージを持つ美容業界では特に重要ですが、ゴール12とも関連性が深いキーワードです。

SDGsの目標達成のために美容業界で出来ることとして、プラスチック容器の使用量を減らすことはもちろんのこと、製造段階で再生可能エネルギーを選択して廃棄時のCO2排出量を減らしたり、廃棄ロスを減らしたりという取り組みがあります。いくつか具体例を見てみましょう。

例１．資生堂

資生堂では、4R＝「リデュース」「リユース」「リサイクル」「リプレース」に、人・社会・環境を尊重する考えの「リスペクト」を加えた「資生堂5Rs」という独自のパッケージポリシーを提唱しています。 「リデュース／リユース」が同時にできる詰め替え・付け替え容器や、水や土の中で分解する素材を用いた容器の採用を実施し、環境フットプリントの小さな製品提供を目指しています。

例２．ファンケル

ファンケルでは、2050年までにCO2排出量実質ゼロの目標を掲げ、化学品製造拠点の工場や物流センターで太陽光パネルを設置し、電力切替等により再生可能エネルギーを活用しています。 また、使用済みプラスチック容器を一部直営店舗で回収し、花や緑を育てる植木鉢にリサイクルするなど多角的な取り組みを推進しています。

そのほかにも、動物実験を行わない、フェアトレード原料を調達する、農薬・化学肥料を使わず栽培された植物を使う、など美容業界でも様々な取り組みが広がっています。

容器や成分だけでなく、商品開発の過程も含め商品開発全体でエシカルを体現していくことが、環境保護だけでなくブランドイメージの向上にも繋がっています。

ゴール14：「海の豊かさを守ろう」

環境課題の中でも深刻な局面を迎える一つに、海洋汚染があります。日本でも海面にゴミが浮いていたり、海洋事故等で海に油が漏れ出してしまう映像を見たりしたことがある人もいるのではないでしょうか。

海洋汚染を食い止めるために、まず私たちができることとして、プラスチック製容器・パッケージの見直し、リユース・リサイクルを考慮する製品・容器開発が急務と考えられています。

美容業界に対応が求められる事例としても、パラオやハワイにおける日焼け止め使用規制は記憶に新しいのではないでしょうか。サンゴ礁保護のために、紫外線吸収剤が配合されている日焼け止めの販売を禁止する法律が制定・試行されていますが、特にハワイ州マウイ郡では、全てのケミカルを排除した日焼け止めでないと販売できないという厳しい制約を設けているのです。

日本でも2022年4月に「プラスチックに係る資源循環の促進等に関する法律」が施行されるなど、プラスチック製品の削減に向けた取り組みが加速しています。具体的にどのような事例があるのでしょうか。

例1．P&Gジャパン合同会社

P&Gでは、グループ世界共通の長期ビジョンとして「Ambition2030」を掲げ、多岐にわたるサスティナビリティ活動を進めています。

中でもヘアケアカテゴリーでは、2030年までに製品パッケージを100%リサイクル・再利用可能にし、2025年までに再生素材でない新品のプラスチックを50%削減することを宣言しています。実現するために、2021年秋にはリサイクル可能な「詰め替えECOPOUCH」や、繰り返し愛用できる���うに耐久性のあるアルミボトルが発売されるなど多角的な取り組みをしています。

例2．イオンリテール

大手スーパー「イオン」を運営するイオンリテールでは、化粧品・日用品メーカーと協働し、使用済み容器の回収リサイクル「グラムビューティーク��サイクルプログラム」を2021年より開始しています。回収する容器はマテリアルリサイクルされ、店舗の買い物かごやエコバッグとして生まれ変わるなど、化粧品メーカーだけでなく、小売店でもサスティナビリティを実現する工夫を行っています。

現在、様々な企業が上記例のように容器改良や内容物の見直しなどに力を注いでいます。

今後はそのような取り組みを続けるだけでなく、世間により広く認知させ、消費者によるサスティナブルな選択やエシカル消費に訴えかける告知活動をしたり、独自性の高い取り組みを続けることで企業価値を高めるということも必要になってくるのではないでしょうか。
