PLOT

EXPOSITION

The story is set in the fictional city of Agrabah, where a young street urchin named Aladdin dreams of a better life. He encounters Princess Jasmine, whi is disguised as a commoner and they form a connection. Meanwhile the evil soreeree Jafar seeks a magical lamp hidden in the cave of wonders.

Rising action

Jafar manipulates Aladdin into retrieving the lamp for him, but Aladdin accidentally becomes trapped in the cave. Inside , he discovers a magical Genie who grants him three wishes. Aladdin uses his first wish to become prince Ali Ababwa to impress Jasmine and gain acceptance.

CLIMAX

Aladdin's true identity is revealed during a confrontation with Jaraf. Jaraf steals the lamp and becomes the Genie's master, using his powers to gain control. Aladdin must find a way to defeat Jafar and Save Agrabah.

FALLING ACTION

With the help of his friends, including the Genie, Aladdin devises a plan to outsmart Jafar and reclaim the lamp. Aladdin uses his final wish to set the Genie free.

DENOUEMENT

Aladdin defeats Jafar, who is trapped in his own greed. Aladdin reveals his true identity to Jasmine, and they express their love for each other. do you have any horror manga recommendations? I've been reading them a lot lately

ooh that is a very very good question!! and honestly if you've been following me for a while you've probably seen my catalogue of horror manga lmao. as much as manga is my preferred medium compared to anime and ykno i have a casual fondness for horror, it actually takes me a while to work through new manga DX DX i do have a couple of stuff i can probably suggest, though.

(since you're actively seeking horror, i'm gonna take a guess and assume you're not really in need of any major trigger warnings, since a lot of these recs include gore/violence/sexuality/abuse/general skeeziness, or at least can anticipate that you're gonna run into unsavory stuff, but you can follow up and let me know if there is actually something i should take note of.)

One thing I find with horror manga (and horror in general, but manga especially) is a common big genre drift with things action or comedy or adventure or something. A lot of the well-known names on rec lists have horror elements rather than being primarily horror, or the horror influence ends up downplayed as the story goes on. but still excellent. If I have recs in the realm of "horror-lite/influenced", I'd say:

Kemono Jihen by Sho Aimoto, kid joins a detective agency in Tokyo meant to resolve supernatural incidents between "kemono" and humans.

Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu, a girl who believes in spirits & ghosts and a boy who believes in aliens become friends! And a lot of things happen because the creator assisted for Fujimoto of Chainsaw Man fame, so it has a lot of the same off-the-wall, irreverent humour. While it's not as tight or classy as CSM, it's still a fuckin fun romp with nice horror moments.

Both of those I actually need to catch up with, haha. I'll actually recommend Can You Just Die, My Darling? as well, although I'm not sure if you're the anon who recced it to me first. Much stronger on the horror & violence elements, but it's another one I still have to catch up on.

I'm trying to avoid the obvious recommendations that you can get off any list, like Junji Ito or idk. Tokyo Ghoul, Dorohedoro or something like that. But special shout out to Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. I'm most familiar with the 2006/07 anime series rather than the games (besides a couple of let's plays) and the manga, but I watched it with my sisters when I was young, LONG before I considered myself a horror fan, and I still consider those question arcs to have some of the best horror sequences ever experienced blind. Hugely influential.

In a similar vein to trying to avoid obvious recs, I know that Shuzo Oshime has gotten more popular as of late, but I've been working through Blood on the Tracks, which is about really insane mommy issues, so if you're cool with that!! For probably my biggest recommendations though - the first one is a short-ish read, I think it was only one volume? The other two were excellent recommendations from my friends!

Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki is about how fucked up the modelling & beauty industry is. There's also a movie adaptation that I haven't watched it.

Hikaru Ga Shinda Natsu (The Summer Hikaru Died) by Mokumokuren, a relatively new BL ongoing series about two friends who live in a rural village - except one of the friends had disappeared months ago in the mountains.

And my actual personal favourite recommendation, Kurosagi: Corpse Delivery Service. It's about a team of students at a Buddhist college who start a company to deliver corpses. They also solve murders along the way! This is a really great series and pretty easy to get into, I think - there's some ongoing plot, but a lot of the arcs are more episodic in nature. A lot of fun discussion on Japanese culture and views on death, it's funny, the gore and horror art are just great, it's just a cool unique series. The only thing is that while I believe it's completed, it's not fully translated in English - I think translations only go up to chapter ~89? So while there's story threads that are unanswered, the translations don't end on a cliffhanger at least.

I do have a "To Read" list compiled after going through some other rec lists / Youtube videos about horror manga. Contra: Operation Galuga Review - Finding A Way Forward - Game Informer

Once a tentpole franchise in the popular run-and-gun subgenre of action games, Contra has experienced a stark downturn in recent decades. Konami’s (mostly) side-scrolling shooter franchise has often gone long stretches without a release, and the games that have come out in recent years range from middling to downright bad. With Contra: Operation Galuga, Konami taps renowned retro-style developer WayForward, best known for its work on the Shantae series, to bring the once-renowned series back to its roots. While far from a one-to-one remake, Contra: Operation Galuga effectively captures the spirit of the original game while modernizing just enough to make for an exciting, albeit short, adventure.

The core conceits of the original Contra carry forward into this modern reimagining. Smooth platforming, solid 2D gunplay, and a wealth of power-ups are at your disposal as you take on a tough-as-nails campaign consisting of eight missions. The spread gun power-up remains extremely effective, but I adored blasting through hordes of enemies with items like the flamethrower, heat-seeking missiles, and lasers. Operation Galuga ups the ante by allowing you to stack power-ups, meaning the upgrade becomes more potent if you gather duplicate power-ups. On top of that, if you find your back against the wall or you’re about to pick up a new power-up, you can sacrifice your existing weapon to unleash a powerful Overload ability. These ultimate-style abilities provide aid in the form of additions like drones, shields, and clusters of attacks. I loved balancing the risk and reward of maximizing damage and effectiveness in tough combat scenarios.

WayForward proves supremely capable of delivering stellar gameplay and strong level design within the confines of the established classic Contra games. By using the original levels more as guides than slavishly adhering to their layouts, WayForward competently injects big setpiece moments late ’80s technology could only dream of. Though the initial level and the ascent up a waterfall hold a special place in my heart due to nostalgia, I most enjoyed when WayForward added elements like a hoverbike to the base mission, or inserting a train into the ice level. Though there are only eight missions in Story Mode, these different formats go a long way to diversifying the experience, as do the multiple unlockable characters, each with unique special abilities. However, I am disappointed in the lack of 3D-style shooting gallery levels that were so iconic in the original NES game.

Additional enemy types, bosses, and areas to explore pad out the stages, and unless you hone your skills, it will be an uphill battle to get through Story Mode. While the term “bullet hell” wasn’t yet coined when Contra hit the NES in 1988, that term can retroactively be applied to certain sequences of that title. Those same sections have been reimagined and easily earn that designation in Operation Galuga. On various occasions, it took me multiple attempts to understand what I even needed to do to push through a difficult situation and, even more still, to execute the plan. True to its source material, Operation Galuga is a hard game.

Thankfully, you can adjust the difficulty in a couple of ways to make it more approachable. In both Story and Arcade Mode, you can choose a difficulty setting and decide if you’d rather have your character operate on the one-hit kill style of the original game or if you want HP associated with each life. These modernizations drastically improve the experience, though don’t expect these settings to make the missions a walk in the park. 

These settings also don’t impact the aptly named Challenge Mode, which gives you 30 bite-sized objectives to complete. You can try your hand at speedrun, survival, boss battle, and weapon-specific challenges, but outside of the initial attempts, I never felt compelled to return to these. Arcade Mode offers a similar experience to that of Story Mode, but minus the superfluous cutscenes and narrative character restrictions. You can also play Arcade Mode in four-player co-op instead of the two-player limit in Story. 

All these activities reward you with credits, which are used to buy perks from the in-game shop. These equippable boosts offer upgrades like additional HP, extra lives, new characters in Arcade Mode, and even bonuses like additional soundtracks and a fast-paced Speedrun Mode. Unfortunately, the perks are expensive, and I grew tired of farming credits long before I reached the amount I needed for the perks I was eyeing. Even entering the famous Konami Code just adds an expensive, purchasable perk in the shop. 

Though the stages are much longer than their original forms, sometimes clocking in at around 15 minutes, playing through Story Mode only takes a couple of hours. Still, Contra: Operation Galuga packs a whole lot of action into those hours. When you add the more flexible Arcade Mode and difficult Challenge Mode, Operation Galuga is an admirable modernized reimagining of one of the most influential games of the late ’80s.

A Curse For True Love (2.75 stars)

What the heck was that?

Stephanie Garber has written some books I gave 5 stars to. (I'd probably nitpick more now that I'm using a site that allows for partial stars, but still.) It kinda hurts to get a book that I hesitate to rate as high as "mid" from her.

Spoilers for the previous books in this series:

Compared to the last two books, where there was a continuous arc and goal and things escalated, I had the sense reading this book that Garber realized she had loose ends to tie up--but not a book's worth of them. So we got a half a book worth of plot to cover how Apollo handled being messed with for two books and what releasing the Valors entails. (Kind of. Sort of. We could have just not given Apollo closure the same way we never revisited most of the other supporting characters whose fates are unknown. The Valors thing also screams "this is set up for future books" rather than bringing any plot about them to a close.)

Evangeline's amnesia plot is just a mistake, narratively, on every level. It was a Diablous ex Machina in the last book that I was willing to overlook because of how fast and loose the magic in this story is, but getting it explained midway through this book grated on me. In this book, it primarily served to stall the plot. Between that and her extremely minimal resistance to Apollo keeping her locked up, coupled with the fact that her 'quest' for half the book is to learn information that the readers already know, it's straight up boring to read about her. There isn't even a sense of tragedy in her forgotten bonds. Jacks was already trying to dump her in the last book, and no other characters who she built up a relationship with in previous books interact with her basically until she regains her memories. Rather than add any emotion to their dynamic, it just denied readers the chance to see them as they'd been built up for most of the book.

Presumably because Evangeline is locked out of the plot for so long, the parts of the plot that she cares about are rushed at the end of the book. Exposition is dumped in a forced manner on the newly introduced villain and major developments with a Jacks happen off page twice. This despite Jacks having POV chapters and the author absolutely having enough weight to throw around with the success of this series to ask for a few extra chapters in her book. If her publisher told her she had to cut back anywhere, the useless amnesia plot would have been a better place to cut than the build up to the climax.

Speaking of climaxes, this book also does that obnoxious thing with one of its villains where it turns out you could have just left them to their own devices and they would self-destruct. Thematically, I understand what the author was going for, but it still makes the protagonist feel like they weren't as relevant in their own adventure.

I still like the way the author writes, and Apollo finally became an interesting character in this book. Watching his downward spiral as he struggled with the trauma the last two books put him through and an implied sketchy upbringing was a delight. My only gripe is that the books never establish why he like Evangeline, aside from possibly as a lingering side effect of when he was enchanted to fall in love with her. That makes it feel kind of mean-spirited on the author's part that he was treated as an outright villain with love for Evangeline as his stated motive. Particularly when other equally morally dubious characters are allowed to seek redemption and happy endings.

As a conclusion to Evangeline and Jacks' story, this book does not justify its existence. As the start of another potential story, it's still too bogged down with Evangeline and Jacks to let all the new elements and characters we've added breath. (And I'm freaking counting Apollo as a new character, since we only see his un-cursed personality for the first time in this book.) We could have wrapped up Evangeline's story in the last book and let her have her happy ending with Jacks then, and started yet another series revolving more around Apollo and the Valors and whoever else without the Broken Heart Duo taking up so much oddly apportioned page space.

It just feels like their story was basically done, and it was uselessly dragged out to milk fans for one more book and advertise new characters to sell in the next series, when this one did well enough without the Caraval series having to be misused in the same way to set Evangeline up. Combine that with the author bragging about store exclusive alternate endings and the whole thing feels icky.
