The Mars 2020 Rover is preparing to launch to the Red Planet in July 2020, but it doesn’t have a name yet. NASA is asking K-12 students across the United States to send in essays with their best name ideas by Nov. 1.

K-12 students in U.S. public, private and home schools can enter the Mars 2020 Name the Rover essay contest. One grand prize winner will name the rover and be invited to see the spacecraft launch in July 2020 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The Name the Rover contest is part of NASA’s efforts to engage students in the STEM enterprise behind Mars exploration and inspire interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“This naming contest is a wonderful opportunity for our nation’s youth to get involved with NASA’s Moon to Mars missions,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “It is an exciting way to engage with a rover that will likely serve as the first leg of a Mars Sample return campaign, collecting and caching core samples from the Martian surface for scientists here on Earth to study for the first time.”

The Mars 2020 rover is a 2,300-pound robotic scientist that will search for signs of past microbial life, characterize the planet’s climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

“Our Mars 2020 rover has fully taken shape over the past several months, as the project team installed various components onto the chassis: the computer brain and electronics; wheels and mobility system; robotic arm; remote sensing mast; the seven science instruments; and finally, the sample caching system,” said George Tahu, Mars 2020 program executive. “All that’s missing is a great name!”

To enter the contest, students must submit by Nov. 1 their proposed rover name and a short essay, no more than 150 words, explaining why their proposed name should be chosen. The essays will be divided into three groups, by grade level – K-4, 5-8, and 9-12 – and judged on the appropriateness, significance, and originality of their proposed name, and the originality and quality of their essay, and/or finalist interview presentation.

Fifty-two semifinalists will be selected per group, each representing their respective state or U.S. territory. Three finalists then will be selected from each group to advance to the final round.

As part of the final selection process, the public will have an opportunity to vote online on the nine finalists in January 2020. NASA plans to announce the selected name on Feb. 18, 2020 – exactly one year before the rover will land on the surface of Mars.

Mike-sell's has nearly three-quarters of the local (Dayton, Ohio) potato chip market; but most of the company's sales are now outside the Miami Valley. On top of its strong local base, Mike-sell's is the leading potato chip brand in most of the markets it serves.

The trucks that roll out of Mike-sell's 333 Leo Street headquarters travel not just to local supermarkets, but tractor-trailers deliver to 25 distribution centers located throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia. From these twenty-five distribution centers, Mike-sell's serves over 15,000 retail outlets. The major explanation for the growth and success of the company is summed up in three words that have for decades been associated with our potato chips - and the three words are: "They are delicious."

Daniel W. Mikesell was born in 1883 and was raised near Pleasant Hill in Miami County, Ohio. He moved to Dayton in 1906, working briefly for a wholesale and retail dry goods store located at 8 East Third Street. He next worked as a collector for the Home Telephone Company, at a time when Dayton had two competing phone systems.

Dan Mikesell had an itch to be in business for himself. And in America, in Dayton in 1910, you could go into business with nothing more complicated than a second-hand dried beef slicer. Mikesell responded to a newspaper advertisement for just such a piece of equipment and, in two rooms adjacent to his home at 142 South williams, went into business as D.W. Mikesell & Company selling dried beef and sausage.

Dan Mikesell delivered his snack foods by bicycle, and, when repairs or maintenance were needed, would take the bike to a shop on nearby West Third Street where it would be repaired by two brothers - Orville and Wilbur Wright - who also had an idea or two up their sleeves.

The early 1900's marked an era of new beginnings. In 1909, Orville Wright went to Washington, D.C. to demonstrate the practicality of controlled flight to the Us.S. Signal Corps, and as a result of the tests, the Corps bought he Wright Flyer - and Dayton turned out to celebrate the event with a monstrous parade on June 17.

In this era of new beginnings, Dan Mikesell's business was just beginning. It would soon start to grow. Shortly after starting the business, Mikesell had the opportunity to purchase equipment for making what were still known as "Saratoga chips."

Saratoga chips were an uncommon snack, and most people in dayton had never sampled them. But although he had little knowledge of the product, Mikesell gamely tackled production with a couple of kettles, some baskets and stirrers. Aided by his wife, Martha, Mikesell peeled the potatoes, sliced them, fried them, packaged them and delivered the finished potato chips.

By the standards of the day, Dan Mikesell was an innovative businessman. Though we think of our own era as a period of fast change, changes came rapidly in pre orld War I Ohio, , as the automobile and a host of industrial inventions found mass production and wide distribution. Graduating from his bicycle, Dan Mikesell first purchased a horse and wagon for deliveries, and in 1913 acquired the first Ford delivery panel truck in Dayton. It was a family business, not just "mom and pop," but the four Mikesell children as well, would peel and slice the potatoes by hand. It was a great day, Mary Mikesell Mapp recalled years afterward, when tghe family could purchase a potato peeling machine. Mikesell introduced people to the delicious taste of his potato chips through county and state fairs. Each summer, the family would pack up and set off for the fairs. They lived in a tent and sold from a glass case filled with potato chips, with the children soon developing an unerring knack for knowing how large a spoonful would fill a five-cent bag. The chips found eager customers and a solid family business was established.

At the time, potato chips were regarded as a "picnic food," so Dan Mikesell would rely on the other products he handled to carry him through the year. All was not always easy, however.. * * *

Tragedy struck in march of 1913. * * * It was the great flood of 1913. * * * Dan Mikesell, like most Daytonians, found himself temporarily out of business, but he, like so many others, started all over again. Two years later, Mikesell's luck again ran short. The firm was destroyed by fire. After sufficient capital was raised, Dan Mikesell was again back in business at 142 South Williams Street in Dayton.

With potato chips increasingly accepted as a year-round food, Mikesell began concentrating his efforts on this product. Equipoment was enlargedand additional help outside the family was needed. Delivery routes were established, and the company began furnishing chips to local grocery stores.

In 1925, Mikesell company saw a need for a unique logo. It was decided that a "play on words" using the Mikesell name should be used. Mikesell became "Mike-sell's" and the trademark remains today.

As business grew, Mikesell tore down his house and enlarged the factory, subsequently acquiring adjacent land to expand further at the Williams Street location. The growth reflected both the quality of the product and Mikesell's continued concern for innovation. In 1939, he purchased one of the first automated potato chip fryers, a move that marked something of a turning point for the business. * * *

His company grew, propspered, and began in the 1930's to market its products outside of Dayton.

Mikesell, the first name associated with the firm, is carried forward to this day by the name of the product and by Mary Mikesell Mapp, daughter of the founder and a major stockholder and officer of the company. I joined the Mike-sell's Potato Chip Company and became chief administrative officer of the firm in 1952.

When the business finally outgrew the South Williams Street location, the company in 1953 built a new plant and offices at 333 Leo street in Dayton. Since that relocation, a series of additions and remodelings have doubled the size of the firm's physical plant. In 1980, completely new administrative offices were also completed at the Leo Street location. * * *

[M]y early years as an executive in the food industry gave me a solid business background. Using this background, I applied my experience to the Mike-sell's company. In time, I oversaw the construction of the new plant on Leo Street and the introduction of more modern manufacturing and marketing techniques. It was always my goal to follow in the direction of innovation set by Dan Mikesell. During the 1940's and 1950's, the firm had been an important force in installing the newest pacakaging equipment, with equipment suppliers frequently visiting Mike-sell's plant to experiment with ideas that might improve their equipment.'

Mike-sell's was later to be one of the first companies to use automatic packaging machines that formed the bag, filled it with chips, sealed it, and placed twin bags in an outer covering. In the eraly 1970's Mike-sell's introduced packaging equipment that would handle aluminum foil. Today, the company packages a higher proportion of its products in foil than any other potato chip manufacturer. It costs more to do it that way, but given the firm's continuing concern for quality, it' a cost that's in keeping with the company's quality image.

Foil packaging gives Mike-sell's potato chips a fresh taste by effectively sealing out air and moisture. It's this fresh, just-made flavor that gives Mike-sell's a "hometown" taste wherever it's sold.

Much of the firm's growth and expansion during the past decade traces both to these innovations and to the continuing concern for quality. Mike-sells expanded into Columbus in 1971, to Cincinnati in 1977, to Indianapolis in 1978, to Lexington and Huntington in 1981, and to Louisville in 1983. Most recently, Charleston, West Virginia, was added to the firm's distribution area.

But much of the growth also stems from one thing I did not change - the quality of the product. In any field, many things go into creating a quality operation, but in potato chip manufacturing, two things are key: the quality of the potatoes and the quality of the cooking oil.

Mike-sell's today and for years has been the only major potato chip company to prepare its sliced potatoes exclusively in 100 percent premium priced peanut oil. The peanut oil gives Mike-sell's that delicious uncommon difference in flavor which separates them from most other potato chips. That, as much as any other single factor, has made Mike-sell's a product that is finding an increasing demand in an increasingly large geographic market.

The quality of Mike-sells's products reflects the dedication of the firm's employees, a dedication the company promotes through its management style. It is my philosophy that quality starts at the top of an organization. Top management must establish quality standards for all to follow - and then see that everyone adheres to the standards.

The concern for quality and for people-concerned management is an attitude I took to my recent term as president of the Potato Chip/Snack Food Association, International. In addressing the annual members meeting, I commented that we have to strive for excellence in anything that we do. We have to pride ourselves on the products we produce and the way we run our organization. During my term as president we implemented a public relation program to improve the mage of potato chips with customers, which included nutritional labeling. * * *

But the most important thing we stress is that we're not producing potato chips simply to meet a sales quota. We're producing potato chips to satisfy the customer. However you bag it, however you market it, whatever you name it, the potato chip products still begins with potatoes and cooking oil - common things that at Mike-sell's are done uncommonly well. I would imagine that Daniel W. Mikesell, the company's founder, would be inclined to agree.

Mikesell's distribution area includes Ohio (other than Cleveland), Indiana (other than Gary), most of Kentucky and Central Illinois. Luke began working for the company in 2002. He started in the marketing and sales department . Among his accomplishments were rebranding the bags, and liaising with a major national grocer. In January of 2017, Luke became head of operations. The company operates plants in Dayton (chips and kettle chips) and Indianapolis (extruded cheese puffs). They deliver on some routes and use third parties on other routes. Mike-sell's bought the Kelly's Potato Chip business, but discontinued use of the brand.

I reserved a rental car in California with Enterprise. The price was $9.99/day because of a weekend deal .
